Glad that nothing bad happened. ditto for you Ken,
Apparently Ottawa is on a fault line and we get the odd quake as well.

      Cheers Pat.

do the cars go to when you turn them in?

LD- Don't you know? The cars that Patti drives are auctioned off for charity by Sotheby's. Why? Because she's so famous of course! :-)

Ken: Patti's just holding the corporate line, the XT has "just 210hp", right! LOL

Anyone get gifts for their Subaru?

I think I'll put those brand new floor mats I bought a while ago in Sandy, she'll appreciate them.

Was it your car or your skill? Or a little of both?

good job, Lucien. in the endgame whatever the combination of good fortune and good skill may be doesn't really matter much; what matters is that you had enough of both. :)

I had my own bit of excitement this weekend. last thursday afternoon I flew to Phoenix because my sister moved to wichita to get away from that whole scene and go to Wichita State in the fall. friday we picked up a tow dolly trailer from UHaul and loaded up both vehicles. 1996 Suburban 1500 4WD towing a 1994 Cavalier wagon. there was no room in either of them for anything besides the two of us. saturday morning at 9AM we set out with our route going south to Tucson and then Las Cruces on I-10 and then Northeast from Las Cruces all the way to Wichita through Tucumcari, Texhoma, Liberal on US-54.

US-54 is two lane undivided the whole way, but I didn't care because a Suburban towing a Cavalier isn't going to be a speed demon passing people left and right. :-) I'd never gone this way, I always go through Flagstaff and Albuquerque but with Meris not having any snow experience I decided that was probably a Bad Idea.

turns out, US-54 has *no* shoulder to speak of in New Mexico. Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas all see fit to give you at least 4' of shoulder and sometimes near a full lane, but nope, not New Mexico. we're buzzing along at 65-70 MPH over hills and around curves. traffic is pretty light.

it's very dark, around 8 PM, and I'm still rumbling along at 65 or so on cruise control and the terrain is kindy hilly, kinda curvy, kinda bumpy. I can see the tail lights of a pack of vehicles ahead of me maybe a half-mile or so... I see some signs that indicate an S curve is coming up, so a brake a little and just as I'm getting ready to enter it, the headlights illuminate something big and white. I don't care what it is but brake as much as I dare. boy that's a weird feeling when a heavy, unbraked trailer is trying to pass you.

I swerve left around it, crossing the centerline, and see another large white object rolling across the road. I decide my best shot is back to my own lane, since I'm now in the middle of the S curve and somehow while riding the brakes I manage to keep the whole conflagration from hitting anything or going in the ditch. All I hear is a sharp intake of breath from Meris-- good thing, because screaming while you're trying to concentrate is Not Good.

200 yards down the road there's a fullsize truck on the side of the road with a dryer in the bed. he lost his washer; the first thing I dodged was the main chassis of it and the second was the basin. luck, skill, Grace, whatever. ...I wouldn't care to try it again.

day 2 was uneventful and the weather was great the whole trip. it was over 50F when we arrived in wichita around 5:30 PM Sunday.

That's no fun. We were towing our old 4Runner behind a uhaul on a POS trailer back in '96 and had to do some similar slalom on the highway. I thought we were goners, it was swaying back and forth, wouldn't recover even though we were going straight again. The trailer kept violently fishtailing....It was Kirsten driving and I was following in our Explorer watching it, talking her through it on the CB. I can't believe it didn't flip the whole rig.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Tail wagging the dog. That's why I'd never tow a trailer that weighed more than whatever was pulling it. That might have been what saved Q.

Also, Bob mentioned he got a 5' wide trailer because of better stability. I have seen a few 4' ones kinda wobble down the road.

Enough of this crap before somebody gets hurt, seriously though I am glad that Loosh's and Colin's
      guardian angels were on duty.

On another note in case I do not get to the computer between now and Christmas, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the crew a joyful and peaceful Christmas.

      Cheers Pat.

Geez, I bet the Crew can qualify for volume discounts on underwear these days!

actually I was rather jaded about my whole incident. I was swearing like a sailor afterwards, but otherwise normal... heartrate didn't go up, no unintended BM... :) I was definitely sweating when I had my M3 30 degrees to the highway a few months back at 70 mph, that seemed far scarier for some reason.

the speed I guess? even though that big lug was barely in control, it seemed ho-hum and in slow motion.

You guys should get some security. We've been putting in a few staged stuff on the NJ/NY cars and so far everyone loves them. :) It really enhances the stock OEM system, and overcomes some of the pitfalls of it.

Since Patti opened the envy bag, here is a counterpoint from C&D on the BMW X3.

"I might have thought more of the X3 had I not driven it back to back with a Subaru Forester 2.5XT. Yes, the Bimmer is ritzier, offers more niceties, such as power liftgate and hill-descent control and handles and brakes in a league above, but it's more than two seconds slower to 60, a lot harsher in the ride department and about 15 grand more on the bottom line. And as far as I can tell, it doesn't offer any real advantage in rear-seat space, cargo room, or all weather traction. By itself, the X3 is an able performer, but next to the Forester, it simply seems like an inflated 3-series wagon, in both size and price."

    Go Subaru.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
For $15k you can buy some real nice handling :) Heck for about $3K you could get a nice set of 4-pot brakes + coilovers that would outhandle the X3 any day of the week! :)

undivided attention over the next two days, I want to wish you all a wonderful holiday. I'll be back here before the New Year!

Be safe and I hope Santa is good to you all! I have to refrain a bit since the family gets a little jealous of my Edmunds family on occasion.

    Catch you all soon!

Reminds me of the time a La-Z-Boy recliner leaped out of the back of a pickup truck and hurtled toward me as I was doing 70 on a stretch of I-95 in NC. Granted I was driving a little '79 Accord and not towing anything, but reactions were similar.

I don't get here as regularly as I did so if I'm not back in sooner, a Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and Happy New Year to you all.

Just wanted to stop by and wish everybody a Merry Christmas. Hope everyone is doing well.

My "fence" is whether to keep Silvius or get a new Forester... and if a new Forester then which trim: X,XS or XT? After reading Frank's and Patti's posts, I'm almost ready to go to the dealership to get XT... wait, where is that money tree to shake?

Santa, do you hear me? Platinum Silver Metallic please!

Here, in the Bay Area, earthquake was felt only in high-rises, and even there it was minimal. But thanks for all your good wishes!

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Good to see you back, Hutch.

    Yeah, where's Mike (capital "M")?

Don, you out there? How's Marianne?

Guess who I have with me at work today? Tatiana!

She says, and I quote, "I wish you a Happy Christmas, and wish I could celebrate with you. I can't because I have to be with my mommy and daddy!"

Happiest of holidays to my crew family.

Don't burn anything that you're not supposed to, and here's hoping we all stay safe, in our homes and our homeland.

    Blessings, and
    Cheers!

    Hey everyone,
I have one extra ticket for the DC Auto Show for the first taker. I plan to head over there on Friday, 12/26 around 10:30 AM. Since I'm flying out for the holidays later that evening, you have a small window to acquire said ticket. Email me at scott.douglas@hhs.gov today to reserve it.

I'd include all the other holiday's as well but the only other one I'm confident I know is Hanukah and I don't even know if I can spell it correctly! ;-)

I've got quite a few posts to catch up on but I wanted to wish everyone a great Holiday Season from North Lake Tahoe. It's a very white Christmas for us as it's DUMPING snow right now!

I've never seen so many Subarus! I've seen more F-XT's here in the last couple days than in all the months they've been out at home in Seattle. I'll bet one of them was tahoecharlie. Even saw an STi today, sure hope they had snow tires on it!

Sandy got a nice little wish list. Beyond the new floor mats she also got a fresh set of windshield wipers and some Techron.

Anyone else nutty enough to get presents for their Subie? :o)

However, I got a superb book on classic automobiles, with some of the best car photography I've ever seen. :)

Not only did I get an STI under my Christmas tree but it is a rally ready one with the roof scoop, WRC wing, full body work, carbon fiber hood with the extra vent and all of the other Prodrive goodies.

OK so my wife got me a 1/10 scale RC model but it is really impressive. She got it at Walmart and it is WR blue and really is set up like the WRC car. At 1/10 scale it is huge, one and a half feet long! It even has coil spring suspension. Runs on a rechargeable NiCad pack. Lots of fun, but my 150 lb dog was not too impressed by being chased by it.

I want to get some mini traffic cones and set them in the driveway as an autocross course. I will try to get a pic up in the gallery.

    Merry Christmas all!

My wife got me a Sony PS2, which is cool. I never get good gifts like this, and was quite surprised. Been playing Grand Theft Auto, but I want to look for a rally game today. My wife's younger brother will be visiting for the next 4-5 days, and he'll probably kick my butt for sure....

Has anyone ever heard of a comparison of Suabru vs Audi A6? A co-worker was asking me about the Forester and Legacy/OB comparing to the A6.

I was telling him about the XT and he seems interested. I offered to put him in touch with a dealer if he was interested.

    Thanks,
