Right, the dealer discounts the 7500 because the title remains in their name, as a lease.

So, hypothetically (correct me if wrong):
Discount off msrp should be 7500 + 6000?

The bank owns the car. They buy it from the dealer.

The dealer gets $6000 from Honda.. They have no part of the $7500 tax credit.

Your discount is whatever you can negotiate, knowing the dealer is getting the $6000.

That’s actually not true, the dealer will discount 7500 because the credit applies to the title owner of the car. I have had 3 dealers try to say they cant discount the tax credit, but when pressed, on the basis of title holding, they revert their stance.

The dealer does not own the car on a lease, and they never get a tax credit. Once you lease the car, they no longer have an interest in it.

On a lease, Honda Finance buys the car from the dealer, and receives the tax credit.

No matter how your dealers have framed the situation, that is the way it works.

Just bought a Clarity Touring. Couldn't get the $7500 applied to the lease. MSRP $37,152 minus $6K incentive $31,152 + tax and license = ~$34K with Fed tax credit = $27K. With $1500 CA credit $25,500. I'm surprised that Honda allows the $6K credit for a buy. This car for $25K is a steal.

Hi, I'm in NY and looking into the Clarity for leasing. Just curious how does the rebates work for this car? Is NY a bad state to lease it since Honda doesn't have any discounts like CA?

Correct... only CA and OR have lease incentives for the Clarity.

I wouldn't bother attempting to lease the Clarity, in any other state.

But, if you lease, you don't get the Federal incentive, and it doesn't look like Honda is rebating any of it, either.

That is correct. You do not qualify for the federal tax credit, as you aren't the owner - the bank is.

They are hosing you. If you lease you don't get $7500. See my price you can do much much much better

I'm not in the market, so I'm not going to be of much help. You can read back through this thread to see if any prices are posted, but not sure how much that will help.
