Q - It's good to have you back, sir!

2007 Volkswagen Passat sedan, black, 2.0 turbo, 6MT. Traded at the local VW dealer...I know where those turn up... One owner, looks like a car half as old.

Interior is clean, paint looks fantastic, some curb rash on the alloys and one flaw: rust on front driver's wheel well. Which is what happens in the rust belt when any sheet metal gets exposed, at all, ever. I believe it's the "2.0 T" trim level. Does have leatherette and sunroof, that's as far as I got.

Just under 100k miles. No price on it yet, and at 13 years old, it's all in the condition, but I thought I'd ask.

[Meanwhile, the sage green 2008 A6 4.2 quattro that looked amazing for its age has disappeared from the trade-in lot and not turned up anywhere. Probably snapped up by an employee. Good luck; THAT car would not be for the faint of heart.]

I'll say Thank You now -- don't like to clog up the forum with 'empty' posts. cheers -mathias

They will probably slap a $4995 tag on it, but I’d personally be hard pressed to go past $3500. You’ll want to get the cam follower, cam, and oil inspected first, though.

For fun, anyone want to guess what CarMax appraised the Accord? I had some free time and was curious. Sadly, no punch pending.

Whatever happened with Honda's holding their value? This past April, Carvana gave me $12,751 for Mrs. j's 2012 Legacy Limited with the 3.6 engine that just turned 36K miles in the same condition you say your Accord is in. I'm guessing that your Accord has a 4 cylinder and it does have more than twice the mileage, so that might wipe out the normal Honda advantage.

Maybe Mr. @q can tell us what your Accord would be worth if it had the same specs and mileage as Mrs. j's old Subie.

I’m guessing it has to do with sedan versus wagon. Sedan values have to be going down as demand is probably quite a bit less than supply, especially in the 3-5 year age.

I'm sure the mileage dings the value. The value was probably more negatively impacted by weak sedan sales demand. Walking the CarMax lot and other dealerships their inventory is heavy in SUVs/CUVs and trucks. When I visited the Audi dealership it appeared no one was looking at sedans, only the Q3, Q5 and Q7.

I hear what you and @thebean are saying but could this shift in demand for CUV's/SUV's and trucks have changed all that much since April?

@jmonroe1, it probably hasn’t changed since April. I would guess the Accord value would have been around the same in April as it is now. The delta between SUV’s and sedans has been going on for a couple of years, I would imagine. Your foresight in buying the Subie has been rewarded. :)

OK, I'll take your word for it but I'd still like to see a side by side comparison of Mrs. j's 2012 Legacy to an Accord, given the same specs. Plus @sda's Accord is a 2013 whereas her Legacy was a 2012. I thought a one year newer Accord would balance out something when comparing it to a 2012 Subie.

You are underestimating the impact the miles have on the value.

36,000 on the Subaru versus over 80,000 on the Accord. That makes a big difference.

That would be an interesting comparison. In Mrs j’s favor was it was a top of the line Subaru instead of the mid level trim Accord EX, low, low miles, and the strong following Subaru has currently.

Some of the difference has to due with supply. There are a lot of 2013 Accords out there and far fewer Legacy's.

I think the biggest difference in this Accord vs Legacy thread is the mileage! I'd be willing to bet that if you compared vehicles with similar mileage the Accord and Legacy would be similarly valued. The 3.6 in the Legacy would probably cancel out the Accord being a year newer...

I'm amazed that you were offered $8500--is that right?--for a 6 y.o. Accord EX with 88850 miles. And from a dealer! No dealing with tire-kickers and weirdos to take it for "test drives" & get weird on you. I know it's a Honda, but still.

I'm thinking that's probably great low depreciation for you. And the thing about SUVs/CUVs/trucks & wagons vs. sedans--I've thought that for decades. Try going to a "big box" store & buying a new lawnmower or big screen TV & fitting it into a sedan.

About 6 years ago or so, I bought a 55 inch TV and it fit into Mrs. j's 2012 Legacy once the rear seats were folded down. Even had a little room to spare. Now, lawnmower, no but that is why I have son's with vans.

Lawn mower, yes! I fit a push mower in the back seat of my Jetta GLI. I think I had to take it out of the box, but I can’t remember, as it was years ago.

Last time I bought a lawnmower, I slipped it into the back of my Fiesta... still boxed. ;)

Honestly, anymore the only time I use my truck is if I want to use it. Nearly everything that "needs a truck" is easily doable with either the cargo tray on the back of my Forester/Q7, or using the little 8x8 ATV trailer behind the same. I even moved about 2,000# of paper files once with that trailer, towing it behind my Fiesta. So, truck? Not all that necessary. There is the occasional monster load (e.g., 3-4,000# or 8,000#+ towing) for which it comes in handy, but these are so infrequent.

Carvana and Vroom want late model used cars, 3 years old or less, with low miles, and I know this, because that's obviously their target market in what they like to sell. IF they don't sell it on their site, it means they have to give someone else a "cut" of the profit.

Got a good offer on a '17 VW Alltrack for this reason.

    It's blue.

CarMax came back at $11,500. They ran Autocheck and called it accident free but their inspection noted the repaint on the right fender and hood.

Carvana is $11,900 and Vroom is $11,750 both include the accident.

The last gen Forester XT is pretty sought after because they stopped making the XT in the new body style.

I’d list it on some enthusiast forums and I bet you do way better than $12k.

Selling a $12K car private party would be a pain, I would think. Lots of looky-loos and people that want you to tote the note. I’ll take trade in every time and avoid that hassle.

My experience with trying to sell a car over 10K privately is that it takes way too long. With Carvana halving the margins between Private and Trade-In... it's a no-brainer.
