    Greg,
Thanks for the compliment. Yes, it does take a lot of trainging to ride an 80 mile ride, not to mention race one at those speeds. Fortunately there's something called drafting that we cyclists get to take advantage of. ;-)

I've just started riding a K2 bike. Yes, that's right the little family run company that originally made skiis on Vashon Island here in the Seattle area has expanded to bicycles (among many other things). Anyway, it's a K2 Mod 5.0 (www.k2bike.com), which is their top of the line racing bike.

I don't know about the rest of the country but it sure is spring here! It was 70+ here yesterday and this morning until the afternoon rain blew through. If it's nice why don't you dust off that bike, put some air in the tires and feel the wind in your face! It really does bring out the kid in you! It's also been known to make your heart beat faster and lower the risk of heart disease. ;-)

    Cheers!

Mark- Training? What training? We don't need no stinkin training! Least ways that's what I thought until about the 45 mile mark (terrain was rolling hills).

Ian- Way to go! That's a nice bike but methinks too rich for my plebian blood. Maybe one day I'll get back into the same shape I was in when I biked the Swiss Alps and reward myself with a real nice bike. In the meantime I'm happy with what I've got :-)

    -Frank P.

    P.S. I love drafting!

Good to hear that Ed, Ken, and I have a little company on The Fence, Ian. Hang on tight, it's slippery!

I rode about 2 weeks ago. I have a Giant Rincon. The weather since has been snowy and cold. It breaks tomorrow with weather in the 50s and approaching 60F (yeah!) by Friday. I plan to ride at least once this week. I noticed the K2 bikes in the recent reviews in Bicycling and Mountain Biking. I just need to figure out how to schedule a bike routine into my life. Maybe between 2am and 3am. :)

on the way to dropping Michael at camp in PA, we will be stpping in the DC area to do some sightseeing...Spy Museum, ne w Air/Space at Dulles, Holocaust Museum, maybe Monticello...most likely we will rent a car, put it on the autotrain to Lorton, and then drive the rest of the way. Can anybody say "Meet the Small Family?"...dates TBD, but most likely mid - third week in June, as Michael needs to be in camp by June 30th. Will update this exciting news as we get closer...juice, Bob, and gang, see you soon.
Gotta run and pick up my next class from lunch

Whew, back from a ski adventure in West Virginia. I had a free lift ticket at Snowshoe Mountain, and the weather patterns were pointing to an epic ski day on Monday. I left home on Sunday afternoon, where it was sunny and 60F. Three hours and 200 miles later I was crossing mountain ranges in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia and it was in the 20s and snowing! Let me say, you just can't appreciate a Subaru more than when going up and down winding mountain roads in a snowstorm.

I holed up in a hotel at the bottom of the ski area Sunday night, and woke up to find 6" of fresh powder on my car Monday morning. This was light fluffy powder, a combination of lake effects snows and very low overnight temperatures (in single digits F). There was even more snow at the top of the mountain, about 10-12". So, I made first tracks all morning, and then had some great packed powder skiing the rest of the day. Totally unbelievable for "spring" skiing in March in the Southeast.

I skied 8 hours on Monday, then hopped back in the car for the 4.5 hour drive home. Here I am Tuesday morning, in a virtual hangover from the whole trip, but it was worth it!

    OUTSTANDING!

goneskiian: fantastic job on the race results. i'm guessing by the distances you're a 2 or a 3? i must admit i miss those days. i made it to a 3 and was on my way to becoming a 2 but life got in the way. full time dad (9yr old with another due at the end of sept), full time job, and full time student doesn't leave a whole lot of time for training anymore.

i managed to find a compromise with duathlons as it takes less total time for training. i only did one race last season before an injury forced an end to my season but i won the first time out so i definitely will do it again!

how do you like the k2? i really like their color schemes (that's what is important, right?). i saw them on a pretty good sale a while back and considered getting one but then my team picked up specialized as a sponsor (hard to say no to an s-works frameset).

oh yeah, to make sure i stay on topic, i find my forester to be the perfect race vehicle as it blends space, performance, and fun on the way to the races! :)

Lemme know the dates later, Serge. Maybe I'll try to sneak over to that new Air/Space display with you.

Yes, I am still on the fence and it's three sided. One side has the FXT MT w/PP. Another is the Legacy GT Ltd 5EAT. The third and shortest side is the OBXT 5EAT. It's a strange combination.

During my trip to China, I had lots of plane time to kill so I began reading "Where the Suckers Moon". Very interesting stuff with tidbits of Subaru history. For example, I didin't realize that Subaru was the first Japanese import to offer a FWD vehicle. Lots of colorful characters in Subaru history. I wonder if Patti knew any of them.

Also, it was interesting to see how history seems to repeat itself. Subaru has continually tried to reinvent it's image over the last 20 years with the XT, SVX and Legacy. It would be really interesting to see the book updated for the last 5 years where yet again, Subaru changes it's image towards a more performance oriented company.

I didn't find the content on the ad agencies all that interesting, however. Still, a good read for any Subaru buff.

I think the quirky stuff is more interesting to read about, though. The new book might not be as interesting to the reader.

Hey signed up for my first duathlon next month, should be fun. And of course I'll be using the Forester as my race support vehicle!

I just picked up last fall a Trek 4300. I haven't put on too many miles yet, but I like it. It's funny, I have all the gear for riding, now I just have to start riding everyday again (hopefully once it's warmer and dryer).
And to keep this Subaru related, the last thing I have to pick up is a bike hitch and rack to fit my OB. I'm looking at the Draw tite hitch with the Triple X rack. This way we can take the bikes with us on trips.

I went to college with a guy that constantly extolled the virtues of his FWD Subaru - that was 1976 or so. But I didn't know that Subaru was first. I always thought that Honda was. Guess that I need to check out my Import Spotters Guide tonight.....

I know this is off topic, but I know some of you folks have talked about home upgrade projects. Has anyone here heard of, or had done, installing a tankless hot water heater in the home? I'm looking into it, and getting differing opinions.

    Thanks,

We talking FWD imports to the states? Because I believe the Mini was the first FWD back in 1969.

i gurantee you're going to have a blast! what sort of distance is it going to be? i had the opportunity to do the superhero distance (10k/60k/10k) but chickened out and did the mere mortal distance (5k/30k/5k).

my only words of wisdom would be to stay within in YOUR limits on the first run! i was given the same advice by very experienced multisport athletes but forgot when it counted. although it paid off for me that day, it paid off for my doc and physical therapist the following five months.

I've looked at them for years and have seen them used in cabin situations. Now I'm on a well w/o sufficient water pressure to run one so haven't looked recently. They are common in Europe but not sure if the payback is good enough to switch before your storage version dies.

They are small enough to fit in your Outback :-)

I promise to take it to the Cafe if we talk more.

Greg - I hear you on the time thing. I've currently got lots of it so I'm taking full advantage. ;-)

Craig - Wow! That sounds like great skiing. OK, I'm impressed. That kind of snow is great anywhere, but in W.V. it must be fantastic!

Rob - Sorry to hear you injured yourself. I guess winning is some consolation.

I really like the K2. It's my first "compact" road frame, but it fits great and is quite light. Seems pretty stiff as well. Yes, color is very important, after all it's not how fast you are, it's how good you look. ;-)

Actually I'm a 1, but I made that upgrade a couple years ago so I could race the Elite Nats in Redding CA. I got my @$$ handed to me so I consider myself a good regional 2. See above time comment. ;-)

Frank - Good luck in your first Duathlon.

Mark - Sounds like you made the right choice! I don't think you can go wrong with any Trek product. Great stuff.

Steve - I hope the numb hands were from the cold. I know handlebars and seats can cause some unpleasant numbness. I don't know what I'd do if I experienced that and couldn't ride. Guess I'd probably be running a lot more. Or maybe riding a recumbant?

To keep this somewhat on topic...cycling and skiing are why I'm shopping for a Subaru wagon. I just can't carry enough of my toys and friends in my little Civic coupe. ;-)

    Cheers!

It's a 3-mile/16-mile/2-mile Douathlon. Thanks for the pacing advice, my natural instinct is to go out fast and then try and hold on til the finish.

  • chemboy2chemboy2 Member Posts: 7
"Yes, color is very important, after all it's not how fast you are, it's how good you look." couldn't have said it better myself.

props for just going to nats!

do you ever venture further down in ca for any other races? i know sea otter is coming up and who can pass up an opportunity to ride single file in the gutter for hours on end?! in attempt to keep things car related, they do several stages on laguna seca. i've not had the privilege of driving a car on the track but i can say there's no better place for racing a bike, it was simply awe inspiring. racing up to the top of the hill before the corkscrew is painful but it is so worth it coming down, 6mph - 40+mph in seconds. kind of like forester xt, no? ;)

frank: that's just long enough to hurt. oh yeah, although you're probably doing them already you definitely want to do a few "brick" workouts (run/ride immediately after riding/running) before race day. there really aren't words to describe how legs feel running after going all out on a bike for any amount of time.
  • goneskiiangoneskiian Member Posts: 381
Yes, a true roadie, that got his start racing mountain bikes. ;-)

Actually the Elite Nats I did were in Redding in 2001. I've been tempted to come race more in California. However, there are enough races around here (Seattle) to keep me occupied from March 1 to August 31.

Got an e-mail today with some sayings attributed to Will Rogers. This one stood out and I quote.

There are three types of men.

The ones that learn by reading
The few who learn by observation
The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence

      Cheers Pat.

Purely from the cold. It is still winter here! The Trek Navigator series are 'comfort bikes' - easy upright position for those of us that want to ride for relaxation and with the kids.

when the Insight and the STi are painted in the same stroke.
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
They're using the mpg figures and premium fuel requirements of the WRX STi but applying them to the entire Impreza line. That's hardly fair and paints a very inaccurate (not to mention unflattering) picture of the Impreza.

    -Frank P.
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
That Impreza sounds like it is the STI (6man), so no wonder the mileage is low.
That report on mileage sounds like it's coming from my friends 03 OBW 4eat he picked up last June. He keeps complaining to me that he is getting 13-15 mpg on it. I told him to contact Subaru to see what they say. The response from My.Subaru was that the mpg rating is only an average, and it may be affected by your driving style and conditions. He's driving in NYC, and really doesn't go on long trips. Even so, I think he should be getting better mileage than what he gets now.

    Mark
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
the STi is listed as a small sedan, not as a sports car.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
STi isn't a sports car, yet the FWD Celica with 130hp is? Now that's just ridiculous.

Mark: tell your friend he's getting 0 mpg at idle, and that may be a lot of the time in NY.

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
That comparison is a gross oversimpification. Clearly CNN used selective data to make for a more dramatic presentation. What person only considers gas milage when comparing vehicles?

    Ridiculous.

    reports like this. Ugghhh.

Mark - your friend should send another message in asking for someone to start a case on it to look into it further - but the first step - he should get it into the dealer and have it checked out. Our Reps. can't do anything until a dealer has looked at it.

Once that is done, I'm sure they'll be able to check it out for him. The answer he got was one that we would send someone that is asking a more "general" question vs. advising us of a problem. Let me know if he sends something in again?

    Thanks!

My older daughter will come home from her 3rd year of college in May with 110 hours and need just 4 classes to graduate. If they had all fallen in line as needed for prereq's she'd have graduated in 3 yrs with a degree in communication disorders and speech pathology, not a piece of cake degree and impressive in 4 much less 3.

My younger daughter is a junior in high school with a 4.3x gpa and honors classes. I don't know where she's going to college yet but she plans to follow a path similar to her sister.

Both girls are fluent in sign language and conversational French as well. Of course dad isn't biased at all about them... yeah, right!

Daughters are the best invention there ever was.

Looks like worse news for VW/Audi. They've got way more listings in the "Worst" category than does Subaru.

Did they change the article? Looks like it says Impreza WRX STi to me and not Impreza as a generality. Any one who does even an iota of research will quickly enough discover why that Subaru doesn't get good gas mileage.

Patti - Congrats to both you and your daugter!

the daughter with the speech path ...

my daughter changed her major from music to speech path ... unfortunately she did it after the first two years and will probably take five years in all to graduate ... (if we're lucky) ... she's been told anything after that fifth year she's on her own!

she's smart .. just not as focused!
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
the article has WRX STi on it, not sure if it was like that before, perhaps they fixed the label?

  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
They changed the article. The original version merely said Subaru Impreza. The "Man(6)" was the only indication that it was the STi (that and the mpg and premium req). So I guess CNN deserves a minor kudo for correcting their mistake.

  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
sort of funny. they point out the mileage of a 10cyl HEMI to a 2.3L 4 cylinder. NO KIDDING the 4cyl will get better mileage!
