Hmm, I thought the celebrity chats here were always moderated with limited feed going to the celeb.

Yes, they have always been done that way. I think Sylvia will be along soon to offer some more insight on this issue.

that we should have the right to ambush the guests, but they should have the ability—and chance—to answer the "tough" questions that some here may ask.

I think it would be up to the question submitter to phrase it in a sufficiently proper way. Same things that get any other question addressed: clear, concise, polite and relevant.

If you spew some rambling, abusive comments I feel pretty sure the moderator won't bother to sift through it to interpret the "meat" of the question.

I missed about 40 minutes of the guest chat last night, so I don't know if any tough questions were posed to her. If not, they should have been, as there are a lot of Subie and Saab people asking them amongst ourselves. For the 20 or so minutes that I was there, I didn't see any. It was pretty much nothing more than a Saab 9-2x press release.

    Hi Bob -

For auditorium chats where the "Ask Question" button was used (i.e. you had to submit a question) we have ALWAYS handled the chats this way. Otherwise, you would end up with chats where the topic veers off the marketed subject and the first few people in the chat have control all night. It just ISN'T how chats are run.

We haven't done an auditorium chat for a couple of years. In this chat we allowed members to chat with each other in the rooms. In past auditorium chats all you could do was submit a question, sit and watch the selected questions and the response given scroll on the screen.

The Crew has been very fortunate to have Patti participate in the open member chats. It is wonderful and great. However, when guests are invited to our site for an auditorium chat, we will always screen the incoming questions and take a representative cross-section to cover all the themes asked. Chats need to move and not get stuck on one issue.

Finally - we marketed this chat on our site and across the internet to various Saab enthusiast sites. Therefore, as a business we have an obligation to meet the expectations of keeping the chat on theme for those members. The title of the chat was the Saab 9-2X, not the Saab 9-2X v. WRX v. STI, etc. If Subaru ever wishes to have another event chat, we will afford them (and you as a Subaru enthusiast) the same courtesy.

9-2X v. WRX questions were asked and answered (I'm looking at the transcript now) AND the number of these questions asked to her were in proportion to the % submitted and time given on the subject. You can read the transcript when it is posted on the site next week.

I'm sorry if you are disgruntled. This was a special event chat and she was our GUEST. It was not a special Senate Hearing.

Again, sorry if you didn't have a good time. We did have many positive comments from Saab enthusiasts who were especially thankful for the warm reception they received from all of you in the chat and very much enjoyed themselves...we hope to see them in our community more often as new members.

Sylvia, I had a good time, but that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about.

Oh come now Bob! You gotta know that the questions in celebrity chats are always filtered and of course these type chats really are intended to be a “PR session serving... the guest/company at hand”. Otherwise as Karen pointed out, the celebs would stop agreeing to do them. Heck, even supposedly “tough” news shows like 60 Minutes have recently been accused of doing “fluff” celebrity interviews and avoiding asking any embarrassing questions so you can hardly expect Edmunds to do otherwise.

    challenging and/or embarrassing

Any good host would filter the latter, Bob. ;-)

I wasn't there so I dunno about the merely challenging ones.

But for the record I did ask the Subaru Crew members to try to avoid the temptation of "heckling" the guest since we know the answers to the tougher questions already! :-)

Here's how it would have gone had it been unfiltered.

RSF = Rabid Subaru Fan, the heckler
G = Guest from Saab, the victim

    The chat...

RSF: why bother? The WRX is $5 grand cheaper.

G: we offer free service and a longer warranty for the upscale near-luxury buyer.

RAF: why bother? I'll take an STi or a Legacy GT.

G: <silently thinking to herself> that'll be our next 9-3 </end silence> Go ahead, Subarus are nice cars.

RAF: does the Aero get the EJ20 or a new EZ block

G: I don't know anyone named EJ, and isn't EZ that new rap singer? For shizzle my hizzle.

RAF: No, I mean the engine block, are the pistons forged and the sodium filled?

G: sorry I'm on Atkins and limiting my sodium intake

RAF: Does it get the semi-closed deck block?

G: No, my sun deck is open and I just used regular lumber.

RAF: What psi of boost do you get?

G: Sorry, I sold my stock in PSi when the dot bombs crashed.

RAF: What's the new compression ratio?

G: The ratio is 40 cars per dealer, per year. 80,000 sales overall. So it's not very compressed, no.

RAF: do you really think people will pay $5 grand for those little extra perks?

G: No, we built-in a $4000 rebate because we have GM disease.

    <and so on>

We had two teenage boy GUESTS last night, so once we grilled burgers, brats, steaks, and fixings and got THAT cleaned up, we headed out to the Subaru dealer for the customer night to see the new Legacy and Outback. My invitation said 6-9 PM but when we got there about 8:15, it was dark and locked up!!! So not only did I miss the chats, but I didn't get the chance to see/talk/etc. <sigh>

I had an appointment to get the oil changed today, and just dropped the car last night while I was there ... you can BET they will hear from me when I go pick up the car later today!

Indeed that is a valid subject...look what GM tried to do with Saturn after they became successful. There were some very angry people at saturn and rightly so....the whole premise of the Saturn was it was a company that was run by the employee's ...then as soon as the model started to work...well the older folks here remember the story...
  • drovemalldrovemall Member Posts: 29
Thanks for asking, but no I'm not from NYC but lived there 1 year back in 81. I live in the Bay Area-California. There are many many Subaru's here. and your definition of " harsh hyperbole" is what? I have not insulted anbody as other "charter" members here have to me since they didn't like my OPINION about GM and Subaru. Being harsh towards a corporations actions is one thing...taking shots at me personally is....I would NEVER turn a civil yet high energy exchange of opinions and idea's into a personal attack or insult of ones family members or an individual ...you were the one that wanted an "Ignore" system because of my exchanges with Mike? I didn't find that to be a kind remark since I have never invalidated any of your opinions and never will.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I apologize for any of my previous comments, I really just wanted you to calm down. Or if you were calm, alter the tone of your posts. :)

I wasn't trying to say that anyone that has been here longer than you is "better" in any way, I was saying that your harsh style was in stark contrast to the way in which we usually discuss things here.

I am sure Mike was out of line as well, but even though we've started off on the wrong foot here a bit, I won't have any problems going forward in a civil manner.

So again, my apologies. Water under the bridge, let's move on.

If this is such a 'hot topic' maybe it deserves its own board?
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
or rather, Mike isn't out of line, he's just finding different ones.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
First came the Daves. Then the Mikes. Now it's Steve, it seems. Birds of a feather...

Don't get me started on Saturn, LOL!

Great sales model, though. Look how well it's working for Scion. Reverse sticker shock, demand exceeds supply.

I for one have seen mike's racing line and he has no trouble passing V8 pony cars on the Carousel at Summit Point. ;-)

drovemall: check out the 9-2x thread, seriously, lots of interesting debate going on there. I did list about 11-12 differences Saab offers, it might be fun to analyze what those might be worth.

Hi Jim, we are moving out of the Fisherhouse today so I no longer have Access to the net, Anyway I tried calling you today at the numbers you gave me to thank you personally for your kind offer.

Unfortunately when I tried the number you gave for your cell phone the operator came on and said it was no longer in service. I tried your home number but again the operator said you had call block so I was beat both ways.

Please know I tried but was unable to reach you, so again thanks from all 3 of us.

Anne Marie is slowly improving, she does have eyesight problems from a fungal infection in her blood, it probably came from the central lV line in her jugular vein, it was in a lot longer than they like, but they hope to be able to clear up the problem with strong antibiotics,

If not then she will need spectacles or contact lense's.

      Cheers Pat.

Sorry for the trouble. I hope you see this message. I can understand the home number deal, we have a privacy manager that rejects unidentified calls, but the cell number is working and is correct, I even double checked my email to you. I am worried that you need something. Please try the cell phone again or email me if you do need anything.

Can anyone help me out in getting ahold of Pat?

I suspect I'm not the only one who will 'take advantage' of that posted number and call you guys today! It was nice to hear the Irish lilt in Pat and Rita's voices instead of the tap of my keyboard ...

Likewise Brenda it was nice to talk to a real live freind instead of communicating through a car forum. Rita and I really appreciated you taking the time to call.

Great to hear that everything is looking so good! I saw your most recent post quite late last night, so I don't know if your number is still valid. You have my area code transposed, it's 713. I'm sorry I've been so hard to get ahold of. Please don't worry about calling me, your gratitude has shown through just in your multiple attempts at calling me! :) I can't believe you've been able to get so many posts in here. How long are you in this apartment?

Hi crew. I'm back. I had planned to write several road reports but it turns out that Sprint service is pretty rare in Utah and so I could not post off my Treo 600 phone. So here goes the status of Subaru out west and our misadventures. The big misadventure occurred in Ouray CO only 4 days into the vacation. My wife Susan slipped when we were hiking down from a waterfall and twisted her knee. I got her to an emergency room in Ouray CO and x-rays showed that to some extent that she had broken her kneecap again. She had broken it into three pieces when she had a fall in Feb. 2003. That had required surgery, two titanium screws and 8 weeks of immobility. The x rays at the Ouray hospital showed one of the screws bent and that is how the doctor determined that it was rebroken. So they gave her crutches, immobilized it again and told us to go on with the vacation. After a few days Susan called her orthopedic surgeon. He told us to come home and we headed home 4 days early but as of today she still has not been able see him because her HMO requries a referral and her regular doc does not see her till today. What red tape!

As to my car and the vacation: well it is too small to pack for two weeks. My old Forester was great. I need a larger car. The up side was the way it drove out there. We went up mountain passes on I 70 in Colorado and Utah at 75 mph. in 5 th with the cruise on. The turbo boost gauge was pointing straight up most of the time but that is what it is there for. Even with the turbo the mileage was good. Going up and down mountain passes, engine braking at high rpm in second gear and driving switchbacked jeep roads and I still got 26-27 mpg. On the way back from Moab Utah to KC Missouri I averaged 29 mpg. Gas prices varied from $2.29 for premium in Utah to $1.78 here in Indiana.

I actually took the WRX on some pretty nasty gravel roads. One was Land's End road to the top of Grand Mesa in Colorado. It rises from about 7000 feet to 10000 feet with some really steep stwitchbacks. The car did great but I never had to stop. It is wide enough for other cars to get by. Starting uphill on steep slopes was nearly impossible in my Forester due to the lower amount of torque and the lack of low range gears. On Mt. Evans which had paved steep switchbacks I had to gear down to first on several switchbacks to keep from killing the engine. Subarus need a low range. Subarus are big in the Rocky Mtn. region and a real offroadable one would be great. The turbo is a great help and the 8"+ ground clearance is progress too but give them a model with a low range. Subarus are everywhere in Colorado. While I was in the Grand Junction region I counted the first 20 Subarus I saw to see what was most popular. The result was: 11 Outbacks, 5 Legacys that were pre Outback vintage, 1 Baja, 1 old DL, 1 Forester and 1 Impreza. Denver is ruled by WRX's. STI's are common. I was in traffic on I 70 downtown with a 2004 WRX sedan next to me and an STI in front of me. Within the space of about 5 minutes I saw 3 WRX wagons coming the other way.

    (*@$%(*^ HMOs.

My nanny had a problem and it took weeks for them to agree to let us see a doctor, when we finally did he asked what took us so long to come in...

Don't get me started on the "Advice Nurse", who only tried to prevent us from getting an appointment. I swear it's like they get paid according to the percentage of people they block access to a doctor.

We switched plans. Her co-pay is higher but she actually has access to health care, what a concept! Funny thing is CR rated her HMO one of the best. Imagine the bad ones.

Hope she heals nicely. The Forester probably has a softer ride, if she's in any kind of pain.

Glad to hear that things continue to improve. Take care.
Doesn't the military have extended benfits or anything like that to help cover homecare/nursing costs? It might be worth asking if you don't know.
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Sounds like you need a legacy GT wagon!! Or are you waiting for the Legacy STi rumoured for '06??
Don't give up hope with the knee. A bent or even broken screw does not necessarily mean an acute refracture especially if it was the only finding. Plenty of patients with good results are walking around with broken hardware, and it is often near impossible to interpret the x-rays without previous films for comparison.
Hope the news is good in the end.
  • twrxtwrx Member Posts: 647
we just got back from her regular doc. New x rays show separation of two of the three breaks from the 2003 injury. she gets to see orthopedic surgeon on Wed. Regular doc thinks surgery again.

Yes I'd really like to have an Outback XT but the WRX is less than one year old and I love it too much to trade it in. It is my latest mid life sports car. I have not told Susan yet because I know what she will think of 4 cars but that is the way I am leaning. With having the second dog we really need a wagon so I am thinking of looking for an unsold base 2004 OB or 2004 Forester X. I expect that one with a 5 speed could be around for several months and I could get one for a good price. I still have to deal with my dislike of the service department at my local dealership and then there is also were to put 4 cars. (I'm thinking of moving my '92 Toyota pickup to my mother's house about 5 miles away). Maybe next spring we will be a 4 car family. But first this summer I am going to be taking care of a handicapped wife again.

    TWRX:

You certainly had one heck of an adventure! I hope that your wife's knee turns out okay. That's exactly why I switched over to a PPO. The extra expense is worth it for me.

Join me and get a Legacy GT wagon!

It is the Sonic Yellow special edition with the carbon fiber interior trim, Momo shift knob, armrest extension and a dash mounted Garmin eTrex Legend for navigation. Best of all is my power sunroof. I love the GT and XT's but when it comes to good mileage with a turbo my car rules. It has 16000 on it now and 20000 is where my WRX wagon actually went over 30 mpg so that is another reason I am thinking of an NA engine Forester or OB. Plus without a trade in I figure I could get a Forester X for under 20 k if there is still a 2004 around late this year (there could be--local dealer has a 2003 WRX left and right now a 5 speed 2004 XS that i bet that they will have trouble dumping off).
I can afford to borrow the whole amount on a new a car under 20 k.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Sorry to hear that Bruce.

We have 3 cars, but 4? Wow. Guess I'd use a pickup if I had one, once in a while. Or a big van.

Seriously Juice, my feelings for my local dealer are unchanged but I am leaning towards another Subaru as a new wagon. I like the Element, Mazda6 wagon and Mazda3 5door, Jetti TDI wagon are also things I like. But $ wise I think on the low end the Forester X has great value. Love the 3's price but no awd and very small. TDI would be great mileage and price but reliability is a question. Gheap Elements have no abs and gas mileage low. Hope I can get an X for under 20k this winter. Having had a 98 L I know I can carry two large dogs and go on long vacations. I just saw a 2001 S premium 5 speed on the Honda dealer's used lot today. Wonder how the clutch is (weak on my 98) on a 2001?

Still catching up on this lively discussion (as well as the rest of the threads) but I did want to chime in here.

I lived in Georgia 1981-88 and specifically in Atlanta (Decatur) 1985-88. It's not the city it used to be - much more heterogeneous and very snarled by traffic - and is by no means a good pedestrian city.

For a one-nighter I'd recommend checking out the Virginia Highlands neighborhood over the much more publicized (and overrated IMO) Buckhead. Many more than decent eateries, bars and clubs there (e.g. Atkins Park) most of which are farily small and intimate. It's the exception to the rule and much can be seen on foot in a few block radius.

Despite my general disdain for the neighborhood the Buckhead Diner is nationally recognized as one of Atlanta's best, so it's worth a look as well. Drive over in the AM before you head out of town. Pittypat's Porch is worth considering too.

Fast food? Skip the chains and hit the Varsity downtown near the Georgia Tech campus. Get a frosted orange with your chili dogs or burgers and onion rings. Carry along a bottle of Pepcid because the "Greasy V" is an experience you won't forget.

Now back to car stuff, etc....

chat and I think it was handled well - from my perspective. It must be a monster to handle all of the questions and it seemed to flow professionally and with courtesy for the most part. I was signed on via my home PC as Patti. I think it was pretty cool of Debra to give it a shot. I had a hard time not commenting on some things that were said, but I didn't want to "flame" anything and it would have been my opinion vs. Debra's - not necessarily good for the overall point of the chat.

So - kudo's to Edmunds and props to Debra for participating. I found her to be pretty open considering her role and she seemed willing to even comment on future product, a rarity. She just didn't know a lot about the WRX - and I guess she wouldn't have a major need. I lost my connection about 45 minutes into it and couldn't even make our chat! Bummer - I hope it was fun though.
