Fiat 850 Spider. Police pulled four of us teens over, let us know he’d be putting the two of us sitting on the rear hood in body bags if we kept up our antics.

Sport spider technically I think. When I was in middle school my sister had one. Tiny little thing. Hers was yellow.

Yup, that's a 1970 Fiat 850 Sport Spider in Positano Yellow. Positano is a picturesque fishing village with pastel cored homes and buildings. My 1971 124 Spider was the same color.

Right, it's a 1957 Austin Cambridge A55. Supposedly it was sold in the USA as the Austin Cambria but I have never seen one.

that little Triumph is pretty brave turning in front of the Chevy wagon. and is that a '61 Valiant behind it (black with white roof)?

what's the wagon heading away, front right? Is that a Suburban?

Two questions-why is a train going down the middle of the street, and why did the Ford dealer paint “Falcon” on the building? Was it more than just a model?
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,265
It was not uncommon back then for train tracks to use streets as a ROW in certain spots. Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood was notorious for that:

I think the Valiant may actually be a wagon model, and the one heading away from the camera may be a Plymouth Suburban wagon.

I think upon introduction, Falcon was so hyped that it maybe warranted its own sign.

I see a ~50 Pontiac parked at far right, and of course the rear section of a 58 Cadillac at left.

That TR-3 sure looks spiffy with it's wires, whitewalls and dark green paint. Brit cars always seem to look best in BRG.

I'm old enough to remember when that 1st generation of Big 3 "compact cars" in 1960 was a really BIG DEAL. They were going to beat back the challenge of those upstart Euros and they pretty much did but they became bigger and bigger and got swamped by the wave of Japanese iron that was actually compact.

E28. I can't tell the year or model designation from that shot, but '77-'88 was the time frame.

Of course, that model was the basis for the famous '88 M5.

I dated a girl in HS whose dad drove one of these - with a stick shift. He used it to tow his three quarter midget sprint car to race tracks in LA. I loved riding in that car - the engine was so powerful and smooth.

Yup, that is a 1984 BMW 533i BMW Model# E28, the second gen of the original five series cars and the basis for the awesome first M5 (which used the same DOHC six as the M1).

People driving aimlessly in circles in 1960s Europe, probably France. I see a Fiat 500, a Mini, a couple of Beetles, a Citroen 2CV, DS Safari wagon and DS sedan.

Yup, Paris I'd say early in the 60s. There's a white TR-4 with the hardtop to the left of the bus. Most of France's greatest Auto Hits of the era are there including the Simca Aronde (two-tone blue ahead of TR-4).The white car behind the VeeDub in the inner circle could be a Simca 1000. A couple of cars ahead of the VW is what could be a red Dauphine but it looks too small. I had to look hard for the 2CV (parked on left).

Non-French units besides Beetles and the TR include a DKW 90 ahead of the bus. i think the bus is a Mercedes but I forget what it was called. I think the topless white convertible is a Lancia (Fulvia?) Is that a pickup carrying the ladder on the right?

The picture made a question pop into my head that I hadn't really thought of before.

Here in North America and especially in the USA there was some resistance in the '50s and '60s to German and Japanese cars. Understandable since WWII and Pearl Harbor was still fresh in people's minds. But at least the fighting didn't take place on our soil here in North America.

But in France, it was different. Germans occupied France and were a pretty brutal regime. Same in other European countries. And of course they blitzed England. How much resistance to German cars would there have been in those places back in the late 50s/early '60s, I wonder? I don't remember ever reading anything on that subject.

In my anecdotal observations, European nations with auto industries tend to be quite nationalistic in their purchases, especially in times before Asian competition. Those without auto industries seem to be indifferent.

It was based off the Volare/LeBaron/Córdoba platform. If I remember it came with the 318 with fuel injection which was problematic and was frequently replaced with a carb conversion by Chrysler. I liked the crisp clean styling of the front end, less so the chunky rear.

The Imperial was based on Chrysler’s j platform which was only otherwise used for the Córdoba and Miranda and only lived for 3 years. No relationship with the K-car.
