YIKES! I just noticed that on the software you sent me! I'll have to ask Mairen about that. ;)

Not knowing a whole lot about weather, is it possible it could be snowing at the top of the clouds, but changes to rain as it comes to earth?

I was looking at some photos of the old Ford Edsels-blecchh!-How did they ever think they could sell those dogs? Anyway, it looks like the TRIBECA's designers had more than a dash of Edsel "style"!
Does anybody REALLY find the TRIBECA front end attractive?

It's possible, but the way hurricanes suck up warm energy from the ocean, I am not so sure! They're like a big heat engine.

The interesting thing is how slowly the storm is moving. It's still well within the "kltx" radar range, and it's just sitting there spinning. The radar imagery is fantastic:

    image

Looking at the image, if the eye-wall was a clock, Wrightsville Beach is at 9 o'clock, Wilmington is about at 11 o'clock.

    Yes.

Actually Wilmington would be more 9:00 and Wrightsville Beach more 11:00, I would think.

Wrightsville Beach is just a tad northeast of Wilmington.

Woops, looks like they're both at 11 o'clock on the scale of that image.

Looks like mine and lark6's parents (just outside of Myrtle Beach, SC) are getting a good bit of wind/rain. I should give them a buzz. They're well inland so flooding is less of an issue, but trees and wind are more of an issue.

One of my colleagues here is originally from New Orleans has a sister that is a nurse. He didn't hear from her for a few days because they had 18 ICU patients up on the hospital roof. Fifteen of the patients were safely evacuated.

from the Weather Channel is that winds are now 85 mph, and they're expecting it to become a Cat 2 storm. This is from the governor of NC, who was just addressing the press a few minutes ago. He said it would get worse before it gets better. The problem is it's still mostly just off shore, and as a result it is not weakening. As you know these storms weaken as they go over land, and for the most part, that is just not happening. That plus the fact it is moving sooooooo slowly.

    G'day

Actually we have pretty good data feeds from the Australian Bureau of meteorology http://mirror.bom.gov.au but I liked the look of your front end.

    G'day

Okay, todays' odd question. I absent mindedly mentioned Notre dame University to my wife, pronouncing it as for the French "NOT-RA DARM". Judy assures me that the US University is pronounced "NOTER DAEM" (phonetic pronunciation of that bit is rough).

Any takers to give me an education? Wasn't South Bend the home of Studebaker?

    Cheers

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
NOTER DAEM, at least to this slovenly soul it is. :)

As to the Studebaker question: Yes.

  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
Since I LIVE in South Bend and only a short distance from the university, I can assure you that people here say ... Noter Dame (with dame rhyming with came)

The -ter in Noter all but disappear ...

I think the only people who say "no-tra dahm" are the parisians ...

sorry .. the wife gets this one .. lol

I've figured that if I hadn't gone into IT, I would have probably gone into something weather related. As a kid, I remember keying in a weather prediction program from some magazine in BASIC that used temperature, cloud type, and barometric pressure.

I currently use intellicast.com and weather.gov when I need to watch the radar screens. DW knows how much I follow the weather and ususally just asks me what the weather is going to be like, rather than looking in the paper or watching the weather on tv.

....the blurb at the top. The Forums will be read-only from noon-6pm/et today.

Servers are getting oil changed, wash, and wax. ;)

30K service for the hamster. :)

Thanks for the heads-up—and no, I hadn't noticed the blub at the top.

In any event, it means that for 6 or so hours, I can do some "real" work. ;)

Yeah we can all get our work done. :D

Don't forget to wax in the inner side of those rims. Two coats.

I've found that people use the French pronunciation to help justify a high price, because it just sounds more Frou-Frou.

For instance, I say TAR-get, with a hard G. But I've heard people pronounce it tar-JAY!

Maybe there were no sales at the time. ;)

With tuition rates these days, we might see more people using the French pronunciation!

    And for some it's not J.C. Penney, it's Jaques Pen-ay. :P

My wife hones right in on the clearance rack, so we pronounce them the standard way. ;)

Tar-jay is how all the French-Canadian snowbirds here in FL pronounce it...it's a joke to the rest of us

Some folks here call Kmart "K Marché", playing off of the name of what used to be nice Seattle-based department store chain "The Bon Marché", which is now Macy's. Sigh. No Bon Marché anymore, and no Frederick & Nelson, another nice Seattle-based department chain. At least Nordstrom is still around and growing. Hopefully they don't sell out.

I would have, but I have been busy trying to get Meguiar's leather conditioner out of the holes of my charcoal colored perforated leather seats with a toothpick and tiny bristle brush. True story. Rob M.

A natural wood toothpick, I'm sure, and not one of those plastic ones. ;)

Hard to believe another one's on the way...

Batten down the hatches, folks. Stay safe. I know Jim's in Texas, who else?

Hey Pat, make room for us when we retire, I think I'm moving north, not south!

Dang... well at least with these you know they're coming; unlike tornados. Growing up in PR, I'd take hurricanes than tornados or earthquakes any day.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
I disagree ... growing up on the Texas Gulf Coast and watching these storms ... it's hard to know when to stay and when to go .. and you can't wait til the last minute ... and there really is no REAL prediction to where they will actually land - and a few miles up or down the coast really CAN make a big difference in what you should do - or should have done ...

I'm asking for all kinds of prayers, good wishes, or whatever you guys have as Rita bears down on my family and friends near Houston. My parents live between Houston and Galveston. My mother was in the hospital again this week (5th hospitalization this year). She was released yesterday morning and the last word I had was they were headed to my brother's house about 50-60 miles inland. I don't think they are going far enough and I don't think my brother's ancient mobile home in the middle of the Big Thicket is the place for them to be. Last I saw on the news they were probably in the middle of the exodus out of Houston.

25 years ago, we 'fled' from a storm that ended up going in near Brownsville - Hurrican Allen. At the time it was the 'largest' storm geographically ever in the Gulf of Mexico. It took us 8 hours to travel 150 miles north because of the traffic jams out of Houston.

My oldest daughter is about 40 miles inland and lives in a mobile home, but I have assurances from her that they will spend at least a few days in the in laws brick home on the same property.

I have talked to some friends, and mostly they are 'staying put'. While there won't be flooding on the scale of New Orleans, I am very scared for them all ...

I grew up in "Tornado alley" in Okla and seen my share. In Dallas now. They have caused such panic, the grocery stores are all sold out of bottled water. We are Aprox 4 hours north of the Coast...

Rita is causing unbelievable traffic problems. No gas anywhere and I only have a quarter tank in the STi. I will get to work and back today, then park it in the garage and leave it there. People fleeing the Galveston area have been on the Interstates for over 12 hours and have gone 35 miles.

My ex-wife and two boys left yesterday around noon and somehow, thankfully, made it to Austin, TX in only 5 hours. I still don't know how they avoided what others are facing now.

I have plenty of food and water, and I'm on a Houston mountain at about 100' mean sea level. I am more concerned about wind damage than I am about water damage. We have been told to expect 120 mph winds at my location, roughly 70 miles inland.

Wish me luck. I have charged the camcorder batteries and I'll post as I can.

I've been through several hurricanes here in coastal VA, and it's not fun. We got super lucky with Isabel in 2003, no major damage to yard/house while homes less than 1/4 mile away were wrecked by falling trees, wind, water, etc... My in-laws house across the river is still being repaired two years later! And we were lucky to only be without power for about 5 days, it was 5-8 weeks for some people. So I wish you all the same good luck we had last time around!! Just remember it can easily turn into a life or death situation so be prepared and be sensible. Property can be re-built and replaced, but people can't!

Hang in there, stay safe, and know you are in our prayers.

Anne Marie just called and told us that they are being advised also to take precautions. She is just an hour and a half from san Antonio. She is back at Fort Hood. So needless to say we are worried not knowing what is going on there..

    Cheers Pat.

I hate to say this, but it might have been better if this storm hit the Katrina area, in that it's already devestated. Now, by hitting Texas, the whole length of Gulf coast will likely be in ruins. I know that may sound terrible to say, but it might be the lesser of the two evils. In any event, best of luck folks!

My prayers go out to all that in Rita's path. And what is even more frightening is that we still have two months before hurricane season is over. :(

Anybody else enjoying the "stone age" theme TV and radio ads that Subaru is currently running? I like the Flintstone spoofing TV one and there's one particularly clever radio spot where it sounds like you're listening to a tour guide in a natural history museum talk about the reason for the demise of the dinosaurs (bodies that were too big, slow and inefficient) only to find out that he's standing in front of an SUV exhibit :-)

Yes, and the one with the SUV upside down and the feet dangling in the air had me laughing so hard I spit food out of my mouth. :D

my mother was released from the hospital on Wednesday, and we had thought they were already at my brother's house on Wednesday night. My mother called today and said it took them 20 hours to get from their house to my brother's (about 90 miles). Wellll it wasn't 'just' the traffic jam. They got about 20 miles from home and the transmission went out on the truck. It was towed to a lot that the police told them will likely be flooded. My brother had to drive down to get them (he made 'good time' going south), and then take them to his house ... I still don't like where they are ...

oldest daughter and her family ended up going to her husband's grandmother's near Austin, so they are well 'out of reach' ...

middle daughter is at Fort Polk and with the direction change they are likely to get a LOT of wind and rain on the northeast side of the storm .... but should be far enough inland to be 'ok' ...

Ok guys, blame Pat for this one! Seriously, I do wish everyone in the path of this monster the best of luck and good sense to put lives first and property second.

Now speaking of Pat and Rita.... they are good people - better than under normal circumstances any of you would ever probably have an opportunity to know. Ok, crappy sentence because I am dog tired, but hopefully you get the sentiment. Without details, Beth is back in the hospital and is now doing just fine. But a day ago when things were rather tense, Pat and Rita were on the phone offering strength.

Steve, we were just doing what any feeling friend would do, we were both totally humbled that you would consider confiding in us us. We were always taught growing up if you cannot do folks a good turn don't do them bad ones.

And we truly believe that when we meet our maker the question that will be foremost was how did you treat your fellow man, not how much money you had, or how big your house or all the rest of that irrelevant stuff.

We are truly glad that once again Beth is on the way up. Take care.

    Cheers Pat& Rita. :)
