I've not been around much lately (duh). But watching the devastation to our neighbors by Katrina I thought I'd check in to see how everybody is doing. Hope all are healthy and out of harms way.

All's well here (except a broken wrist - me and my bicycle racing ;) ).

Still loving my GT Wagon. Saw the new Impreza front when at the dealership the other day. Interesting. Can't say I like or dislike. Looks good on that STi though (nice ride jimmyp1)!

    Cheers!

Hey Ian... good to see you're still kickin' over there.
Now we need to find ol' Dr. Tom (tsy)!

    Cheers!

I was there a few years ago, hard to believe the images I'm seeing. Unreal.

Water is still rising to I hope everyone can get out of there safely.

Thanks! Yes, per the decree, I move back into the house on Nov. 1st, so, until them, there will be much ding-minimization going on.

One of my uncles came from Japan for my brother's wedding two weeks ago. During his stay, I spent some time with him showing him the sights of the SF Bay Area.

He immediately noticed that I was driving a Subaru. He told me he currently drives a Pleo and I floored me with the tidbit that he has been driving only Subarus ever since the introduction of the 360! We spent quite a bit of time just talking cars and Subarus that day. My dad and his family grew up not too far away from Gunma prefecture so clearly there was local pride of ownership.

My dad's oldest brother also owned a light blue 360. I actually rode in it when I visited Japan as a child. I clearly remember the cool reverse-opening doors, the clatter of the aircooled engine and the little pop-up vent that drew air into the cabin. Apparently, this uncle was recently able to sell his now non-functional 360 for more than he paid for it to a collector!

Just thought it was cool to know that Subies have been in the family all along!

Great story Ken. You should submit it to DRIVE magazine. I be they would run it in the "Letters" section. Send pixs too.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Definitely, but get an old pic of the 360 if you can.

Um, don't mention that he's in Japan. ;)

I'll have to rummage through my old photos, but I think I might have one somewhere.

Interestingly, when I was visiting Japan one summer as a child, a popular TV series had the main character driving a 360. When I told the local kids that my uncle drove one, a bunch of them came running over to check it out. Should have charged admission!

I just saw on the news today that there's a BP gas station in Atlanta charging over $6.00/gal for premium! Thanks no doubt in part to Katrina.

    Good luck Frank & BigElm...

Yep, due to morning news reports that Atlanta only had a 10-day supply of gas and that the two pipelines supplying the metro area were out of operation due to Katrina, what I can only describe as a near panic buying mentality set in with long lines almost instantly forming at area gas stations. Naturally some station owners saw an easy opportunity to turn a quick profit and immediately jacked up their prices. When things return to normal, hopefully consumers will remember who the price gougers were and show their displeasure by going elsewhere.

Oh well, high gas prices suck but I'm thankful that at least I'm not one of the countless poor souls going thru a living hell on the gulf coast. Please keep them in your prayers. I'm afraid that this disaster is going to have repercussions for the entire country before it's over :(

on Monday it was $2.549 here and I stopped by the gas station on the corner on the way home planning to fill up because I knew prices would go up shortly ... only it was packed .. people waiting to get to a pump (as it usually is at that time on almost any day) .. so figured I'd go back later .. only I didn't .. went to bed early ..

left for work on Tuesday .. price was $2.799 ... this morning .. I stopped on the way to work and filled up because I was almost empty and figured price would go higher ... not lower ... smart move on my part since it was $3.199 in almost all places this afternoon .. some up to $3.509 ... what a mess ...

and what a mess in nawlins ... it's not going to be over for awhile ...

No mercy... though I had alittle less than 1/2 tank, I was taking my son to daycare this morning and saw the price of $2.69/gallon. I passed it and something told me to fill up and not wait till night, which is normally when I go. I went with my gut and filled up; went to a client site and came out at 4:30pm - prices had already jumped to $3.09/gallon in outerskirts of Atlanta. My jaw dropped... unreal! There were already news reporters looking for those gas stations trying to rip people off like the $6.00/gallon reported. My wife wasn't too lucky... she had alittle over 1/2 tank but she didn't want to chance tomorrow. Just came back from filling it at $3.29/gallon. Looks like the word spread cause most gas stations in Mableton (just 10 miles west of Atlanta) was out of gas (which is currently one of the cheapest prices in metro area).

I never thought I'd live to see this day... :sheesh:

BP probably isn't too happy with their franchise stations gouging people and getting their photo plastered all over Drudge. Meanwhile the Governor has stepped in to sanction gougers, like Georgia did last year after Hurricane Ivan. Here's one story:

Perdue signs order allowing sanctions against gas gougers (Ledger-Enquirer)

Michael broke both bones in his left forearm yesterday afternoon and will be undergoing orthopedic surgery this afternoon. He will be under full anesthesia, which is a scary thought for all of us and will have plates on both bones for approximately a year. Please put in a good word with the big guy upstairs...as always, it truly helps, especially from everyone here. I will write tomorrow with furhter news.
    THANKS

    That's just shameful.

$6 would put me on a bicycle to the subway station, even though it's a long ride.

Times like this I'm proud of my 20+ EPA city promise, which I made to myself in college and have followed since then. Never bought a car that didn't exceed 20 mpg even in the city.

Sorry to hear that, Serge. Happened to me when i was a kid, same thing, both bones.

They set it once and the bones slipped, so I had to go in a 2nd time to re-set them and they put on a 2nd cast. That's why I think the plates can be a good thing, they ensure proper setting/healing. My ordeal took 6 weeks, hopefully his will be quicker, maybe 3-4.

Hang in there, Michael, the worst part is past you.

    Serge,

Needless to say our thoughts and prayers are there for Michael. I hope everything works out.

Just to be a bit paranoid, make sure the Doctors know what they are doing. This happened to my nephew a few years ago, and they screwed up the surgery. Since then he can't raise his arm above his head. Only good thing out of all that -it payed for his college.

Again, wishing all the best for a quick and easy recovery.

Don't scare him, I'm sure the docs know what they are doing.

Besides, my arm was fixed up just fine, and when I raise my arm above my head people complain about BO, so that's over-rated. :D

The Honda folks have hi-jacked our chat tonight, for the Civic debut. We got the heads-up last week but I just wanted to remind people not to show up.

    LOL

You know what I mean. :P

Last week's chat was hysterical, for those who missed it. We got into discussions about holograms and giving Becky (the NAV voice) more emphasis.

    Serge,

You've got my positive thoughts going your way. I've had my share of support from our group of friends here!

I'm sure Michael will do just fine. I'm assuming he's young and that such surgical procedures are fairly routine.

Ouch! Hope the surgery goes well. Prayers and positive thoughts coming his way.

Oh yeah..tell Michael he should lead with his right from now on. :)

The latest from Atlanta... Federal and State officials are hunting down gas stations who are price gouging and are penalizing them. For every person they price gouge it's a $5,000 fine and if it's done to senior citizens it's $15,000 per person. Prices have dramatically reduced since last night where gas stations thought they'd get away with this!

    Serge,

Sorry to hear... but our thoughts and prayers goes out to you buddy. Keep ya head up! :-)

Got lucky... I filled up for $2.65 yesterday evening and our prices have held fairly steady today, surprisingly. Even the most expensive stations are hovering right around $3.00 for regular. We've got some of the nation's highest gas taxes up here in the Great NW, so our prices are usually fairly steep (but cheaper than CA!). Ours must come through other ports or something.

Our positive thoughts and prayers that everything will be okay.

Re gas prices, regular gas was 1.33 a litre here tonight, that works out to 5.99CDN an imperial gallon. As far as I am concerned that is just plain out and out gouging.

    Cheers Pat.

Michael's surgery yesterday went extremely well according to the surgeon. He said both bones were perfectly aligned and are held together with plates, which will be in approx. 1 year; the healing itself should take approximately 8 weeks. He is sometimes in pain as to be expected, but he has Percocet for major pain. I slept at the hospital last night so I'm somewhat sleepy, but today, Michael was discharged, so we are home. He was a real trooper throughout this ordeal (though there is still a long road ahead). I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the crew for all their thoughts; it truly helped us get through this knowing you were all there.

Regular 87 octane went to 2.89 here, up from 2.74 the first of the week. Diesel is at 3.39 this afternoon, up a dime from this morning.

The fuel supplier to my department is getting 3 price updates daily.

    Cheers! (or maybe not!)

Serge, how did he break his arm?

When I was about 10, I fell out of a tree and broke my left forearm (both bones). It was close to being a compound fracture, but it didn't break quite the skin. Fortunately I didn't need surgery, as the doctors were able to maneuver the bones pretty well; not perfect, but close enough. but I had a cast on for 6 weeks. It was not fun.

It happened so fast I'm replying to my own post!

No sooner do I turn my back and POOF! regular has hit 2.999.
No rhyme or reason to some of it - the temporary production/delivery decrease I can understand causing a spike, but I'll bet a dollar to a donut we won't see prices come down as quickly as they went up once things stabilize.

    Cheers!

The latest in Atlanta..... (funny thing about that pic, cause it was the first gas station on the news and got busted for price gouging)... For the month of September, state officials announced that the sales tax for fuel will be lifted, which is a savings of 15 cents/gallon. Federal government has already budgeted for the tax break. They are expecting gas stations to obliged otherwise consequences will follow.

This is almost entertaining to a certain extent.

NJ gas is cheap because there is no sales tax on fuel... that's probably the only thing I miss, in addition to no sales tax on clothes.

for years we've been telling him not to wear socks on out tile floor; last Wed. he stubbed his toe and he lifted his foot to look at at. He said he lost his balance and fell against the wall and floor, using his arm to break his fall.

What is interesting is that the surgeon said that surgery is done on adults and for orthopedists, the age when kids are considered adults in terms of bones is approx. 12 years old; plus his breaks were bad enough that a cast woul not have been the best solution.

The only good thing about this whole thing is he decided to give up skateboarding, which Susan and I were never crazy about.
He's doing ok...the time periods between his pain medication are getting longer.

My daughter loves to rollerblade. As of late, she has been giving me a hard time about my insistance that she wear full body armor (wrist guards, etc.). Keeping kids safe is one of the tough parts about parenting.

(paid $3.39 for regular on Friday). Filled both cars and the mower cans.... $120....

Serge, best wishes for your son Michael.

My Michael who turned 10 in August has been hell on wheels with his bicycle this summer. He has fallen or crashed countless times, and always seems to have a bandaid on a knee or elbow. At least he always wears a helmet.

Gas prices? A local independent in town has regular for $3.59 and premium for $3.99. Ouch! Rob M.

Glad to hear Michael is doing well!

Side story: When he was nine, one of my brothers fell off his bike and broke his arm. Or at least that was story my brothers told at the time. What actually happened was they were playing pirates around an old abandoned farm house that had burned down leaving an open hole where the cellar was. My brother was "walking the plank" and fell in and broke his arm. They came up with the falling off the bike story because they had been told not to play there and feared a broken bone would be the least of their injuries if the truth was known. They finally confessed at Thanksgiving dinner a couple of years ago. They figured that after 40 years it was safe to tell our Mother. :shades:

    Karen,

I love it! A few years ago at my parents house my sister and I did the 'tell all' thing. I think we aged my folks a few more years by outing the truth on a number of things we did either together or individually as kids.

    Serge,
Glad to hear Michael's doing well. Tell him he beat me to it. I'm in my first cast ever and in my mid 30's! :P

Yes, I missed out on some things in my youth. Strange actually cause I did all kinds of stuff that I could have broken bones in skateboarding, bmx racing, ski racing... Guess I was just lucky! ;)

Well, I guess I did break my colar bone as a kid. While my parents were in France! Tought them to travel without me. :P No cast for that though so it doesn't count.

Haven't filled up lately but Seattle prices are hovering right around $3 last I checked. Hmmm, maybe I should look into that Cobb AP as I hear they've got an economy mode available now. Have to run it by the CFO (wife) first.

    Cheers!
