The wedding ceremony as we had originally planned is certainly off, but we're thinking of doing our best to bring the party to her as much as possible. All our friends and family are still planning on coming out as planned.
Ken
Sorry to hear about the accident. My prayers to you and your extended family. Coming on the verge of a joyous occasion, it must be especially painful. And certainly a reminder to us all of our mortality.
Jim
Oh man, does that ever bite. I am so sorry to hear that. There is never a good time to have an accident, but right before the wedding.... Fingers crossed and prayers that everyone recovers fully and quickly.
Pat - sorry to hear about your heartache.
Craig - what? another new car? spoiled rotten kid....

I got one of the hats last week. Pricey, but it's very nice.

Outback and Legacy are in the top ten highest value retained for 2005 model midsized wagons. Then again, it's a relatively small category, but still nice to know.

Ken, that's terrible. My thoughts/prayers out to you and yours for speedy recoveries and that all remember the joy that comes with new marriages.
Pat: amazing the nerve of people. It gets worse and worse. I've actually seen people slam their doors into the cars parked next to them, the drivers of those cars still inside, and walk away as if they did nothing. I'd like to believe in karma at times like those. Granted it all pales in comparison to what Ken's family is going through.
Serge and Loosh: if you're out there, I got your e-mails/snail mails/PMs. Things are starting to get busy for me again in a good way so time has been tight. Thanks for understanding.
Ed
as for the wreck, it doesn't have to be all that fast, actually. We witnessed a carbon copy of such an accident here in the neighborhood.
We have a lot of Chinese students in the hood here, studying at JHU. for many of them, it is their first time driving in 20-30 years. I cringe often at the near misses I see, either because of extreme timidity (look left, look right, inch out, look left, look right, inch out, look left look right, inch out, now in the middle of the lane, etc.) or lack of situational awareness. Well anyways we were at a light right up the road. A small intersection, no opportunity for anyone to get up much steam, limit is 30mph I think. The light turned green and the Voyager in front of pulls into the intersection and WHAM!! Broadsided by a student couple in a new corolla. Van swerves in the opposite direction and rolls over. It's pandamonium- kids in the minivan screaming, way overweight mama hanging upside down in her belt like a tank transfer at SeaWorld gone wrong, terrified Chinese girl sobbing, stoic Chinese boyfriend/fiancee holding her, the other minivan passenger yelling at them both....and then the heavens opened up in a torrential thunder squall. Just pandamonium. I felt so bad for that girl. She just spaced and cruised right through the light...probably been driving for a few months, tops.
Dennis, an RS? Did I miss something?
so anyway, I think I might trade the FXT in on a 2006 Impreza 2.5i wagon.
Re the FXT: I understand where you're coming from. Given my working life and home life there's not a lot of quality "me time" anymore, so I consider FXT seat time "me time." I'll brownbag and cut out nonsubscription car mags to make up for the extra $15-20/month on premium fuel. (I used to subcribe to RallyXS; when that pub died and was folded into the very F1-biased Autosport I let that subscription lapse.) It is just that much fun to drive.
For about a week recently I had Mini Cooper S thoughts. I don't like the Mini's shiny dash but without a sunroof that'd not be as great a problem. However the Mini is not nearly as versatile as the FXT, so that snuffed those thoughts.
Ed
Loosh, I think you might be right about the speed since the people in the Jeep were able to walk away.
Hey, so what's this talk about trading in the FXT? Is it the fuel cost or something else?
Ken
Forgot to add, "for my step-daughter".
The extended warranty is by Honda, so I don't know how useful that is.
-Dennis
I like how the 06 refresh looks. I saw one back in June in Japan while I was there on business. I think it works very well with the wagon's lines. Plus, the new 173HP engine is a welcome improvement.
BTW, how's the little one? Have you crossed the point where you don't remember what life was like without a child yet? My daughter can now correctly spot and identify a silver Legacy GT wagon from a distance -- "I found it. Daddy's car!".
Ken
Craig
Cheers Pat.
What, is this the culchie Pat coming out? LOL :P
Chers Pat.
Ken,
The opposite happened when my daughter was a HS freshman. She went out to dinner with a group of friends. When I arrived to pick her up, the whole group was laughing. Turns out they were pointing out nice looking cars. She points out the Legacy as a good looking car when I'm zipping thru the parking lot not realizing until I pull up that it's our car. (Her excuse was that she always sees the car from 10 feet away in the garage.) Her friends got a good laugh out of her inability to recognize the family car.
Jim
ROFL. I know that accidents aren't funny, and I'm glad that it sounds like no one was seriously injured in the wreck you saw, Lucien...
but that's there's funnAy.

Value of a Subaru Gold warranty with 61k miles on the odo? I'd say roughly half the original price paid. Because the B2B expired at 36k, as did the roadside assistance. So the previous owner has used those up. It cost $800-1300 originally (my guess) so let's call it $400-650 added value.
Ken: very sorry to hear that. At least she has a good support group in town and she's feeling better. My thoughts are with her uncle.
Loosh: 06 Impreza would work, but keep in mind the Legacy has a 1 gallon bigger gas tank so an 06 Legacy 2.5i might have more range. The 05s actually had better gas mileage, 23/30, with 16.9 gallons in the tank that yields quite good range - 507 miles. Try to find a left over 05 Leg wagon, maybe.

Those that know about The Palms, it's a trendy place attracting the younger hip crowd, not to mention celebrities and sports figures. When parking in the self parking lot, I finally spotted my first 'beca out in the public - parked on the 2nd level with temporary tags.

Steve
So what was the initial encounter that went bad?
Craig
2 reasons why I think Impreza- size (for my daily city work) and cost. The second is an issue primarily because of the depreciation hit I am going to take should I decide to do this for sure. We still have the '99 OB for family hauling. It's certainly no new car anymore, with the mysterious Legover clunk in the rear, noisy driveline, loose heat shield and all. But, it is still a great car. More so than my old 2.5GT, this particular car loves to be driven hard, the engine loves to be revved, and the WRX rims go a long way to making it even more tossable. Whatever the opposite of a Monday Morning car is, this one's it. I hope it lasts us a good long while (going on 80k)
So anyways, I know it's financially dumb to do this. I'm not at all sure I'll go through with it.
Ken- yea the cobb issue is part of it. I thought I could make a Forester handle the way I like. I was wrong, at least with the resources and time at my disposal. Lark6 can tell you how many people have tinkered with STi takeoffs and such, but I don't have time for hours-long swaps anymore. I think I want car handling back.
(cliff notes- I bought an early set of Cobb swaybars for the FXT. Turned out Cobb hadn't done thier homework, neither bar fit very well. Rear bar loads broke the car's lateral links, so I had to buy STi Aluminum billet links. Front bar snapped in two last week. Cobb wants to make amends with updated replacement parts, but I'm sick of dropping the subframe and skinning knuckles while my wife entertains the baby)

I'll stick my neck out here but if it were up to me I'd stick with the popular WRX STi rear sway bar and mounts swap, keeping your STi lateral links as well. Honestly I think that's all you'd need for the driving situations you encounter. If anything else maybe better endlinks, but that's all. Okay, maybe even Forester STi springs but that's it, I mean it.
Maybe I'm on the verge of becoming an old coot, but I don't see the point of lowering a Forester to WRX/WRX STi heights. Sure we'd like to lose some of the body lean but I don't think we'd want to lose the suspension travel or our dental work. On top of that a slammed Forester (especially an XT) loses some of the stealth factor that has led many to choose it over a WRX wagon or even a WRX STi sedan.
I acknowledge my opinion may be in the minority.
Ed
No, it's not a WRX or F-XT, but given the low entry fee and economical running, it has most of what I would want. Interesting that you may be thinking along the same lines...
Bob
I pulled onto the road with what looked to be plenty of room, but misjudged his speed. It is posted for 40mph, but he was up my tailpipe in less than a 1000 ft. Three miles down the road at an intersection he pulled out into oncoming traffic on the other side of the double yellow, then back in behind me. I initially thought it was a confused attempt at a left turn (intersection is oddly striped), but later realized he was probably determined to race me to the Taconic on-ramp. Then the incident on the pkwy itself. He tried to pass me on the right, then got in front and nailed the brakes. You just never know what kind of nut you will run into on your commute!
Steve
If only we had a decent suspension (Forester CrossSport, etc.) Loosh wouldn't have these problems!

If you think about it, Subaru doesn't sell a truly stripped, base model. AWD and ABS are standard, so I'd put even the lowliest models slightly above the LX model Honda or the LE model Toyota competitors, never mind the DX/CE strippers.
Steve: next time try to get the plates and call it in. Can't hurt...

I just let them pass and pull back 3 cars length with my Hella Xenon DEs on.
They quickly realise that being in front isn't always the best

Wasn't that Reagan?
I meant in the context of Subies. I think it was the Legacy 2.5i specifically.

FXT STi pinks (jdm springs)
STi rear sway
WRX/STi steering rack
except now, I would also need to pay someone for the installs
Bob- yea, I think it would be a great car for most of what I need it for. and in a couple of years, I could even go autocrossing again.
Ken
Have you looked into other possibilities like a used WRX wagon (maybe good deals due to the facelift) or a 2005 2.5i Legacy Wagon?
Ken
While it was a bittersweet ceremony (her uncle is still in the ICU), we still managed to celebrate the occasion and create some good memories out of bad.
My brother and I agreed that we wanted this to be the last time we had to wear tuxedos in a hospital!

I've been 'away' for a while, although I have checked in quite a bit. Long story short, after selling my 1994 Legacy Turbo to Paisan a while back, I couldn't stay out of the Subaru family too long, so I bought a black on silver wheels 2006 STi this morning. First impressions, after 75 miles today, is, oh my goodness. Pics soon. Hope to be around more. Some of you may recall that I was in the process of an unforeseen divorce. That has happened and I am getting on with things. The STi is but one therapy...
Jim
cant wait for the pics
