Colin- This disease gets worse every time I turn on SpeedVision. It seems like a lot of what they show is motorcycle roadracing. I think the disease is terminal (pun intended!). ;)

Kate: LOL! Glad to know you still have that great sense of humor!

    $27k for a Jetta?

Kevin from i-Club put Nitrous in his OBS. It's the 2nd quickest 1/4 mile for a Subie that I've seen.

What to do with $100k. Wow. Allow me to spend it over the next few years, on:

2003 WRX STi to rally cross, $30k
    2003 Forester GT for all-purpose duty, $25k
    2005 Grand Forester Plus, seats 7, $30k
The best Ducati motorcyle I can get with the rest

If I had to buy this year, I'd need a van, so the list would change to:

    2002 Mazda MPV 3.0l V6, $25k
    2002 WRX sedan, $25k
    Boxster S, $50k

    ...but I'd keep Sandy.

VWs are way, way overpriced, especially given their shameful B2B warranty ... Jetta should be firmly in Corolla-Civic territory. VW's no longer "folks carriage".

No VW in my perfect garage then...

    $100K...Tough one:

    -WRX Sedan
    -VDC Wagon
    -Porsche Boxter
    or
    -WRX Sedan
    -Audi Allroad
    -Miata SE

Juice: Bob said specifically to use current available U.S. vehicles. How about a list of '01-'02 models that are out?

Ooh .. this is fun .. let's see

    1st I need to build a garage - $25k
72' Chevy Vega (to throw stones at) $2
    60' Corvette - $30k (good weather only)
    01 - Boxter - $45k
    Sheesh .. I'm busted !

  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
for 25k thats going to be some garage, you got it all wrong about the chevy vega you buy a vega so you can sit in the window and watch it rusting.
    Cheers Pat.
PS. whats worse than having a vega in the laneway? (having two.)
  • thecatthecat Member Posts: 535
    Pat,
25k doesn't go as far as you might think. Besides, my garage will have a lift built in so Juice can continue mod's to Sandy :)

I had a 72' Vega GT (yeah right GT my butt) what a P.O.S. Never owned another GM product after that experience.

I'd like to start a new topic of conversation, if I may.

What was the worst car you ever owned .. and why?

    - hutch
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Actually, I've got a list (hey, it's only 12 1/2 years of driving ok!) of all the vehicles I've owned in my profile.

The worst one: '77 Chevy Nova 4 door. Very first car. I think it cost me $500 (not cheap and I know I paid WAY too much). There was a hole in the floorboard under the drivers feet (from rust!). Most of the corners on the body had rust holes. It had the 250ci straight 6 cylinder. I honestly think that was GM's worst engine - no power at all. You couldn't even do a neutral drop to get the tires to chirp! (for those unwise to the practice: floor the accelerator while in neutral and drop the tranny into drive) The thing leaked oil from virtually everywhere (valve cover, main seal, sides, bottom). You haven't heard lifter tick until you drove this metallic burnt orange beauty! I think there's a picture of this gem at my parents house - I'll see if it's still there and get it scanned. I sold it for $250 6 months later, which I consider a GREAT return for the piece of crud it was!

1980 Datsun 210 coupe, but it wasn't all that bad to be honest.

OK, if I had to follow Bob's rules, my list of currently available vehicles for $100k would change to:

    WRX for $25k
    Odyssey for $28k
    Base Boxster for the balance

1968 Chevy Camaro, straight 6, 3-speed manual transmission. Rusty old bucket. Leaked and burned oil, drove like cr*p; didn't stop or turn without excessive provocation and then only half-heartedly. I don't know what possessed me to buy that dog. I felt guilty taking money from the person I sold it to.

If I had $100K to spend on cars here's the breakdown and I do mean breakdown...

1). A Yugo convertible (Rusted through roof doesn't count!) $150

    2). 50 other Yugos for parts $250

3). A wearhouse to store these cars and slow down the rust $20K

4.) Lot's and Lot's of Beer and Chips to bribe friends to come over and help me fix the one car I'll (Try to) keep running. $3K

5). A used tow truck so that the wife can come pick me up when I get stranded anyway... $35K

Worst Car I drove, a 76 Mercury Capri II V6 I had from 83-85, actually a good car decent pep and handling but the darned thing kept breaking spedometer cables I must have replaced 4 or five of them.

So many rules in the Dream Garage. :)
    - 01 RS Sedan w/STi V.6 conversion by RalliSpec
    ~$36,000. [I think there are a couple 01's left]

    - Used 99 LandCruiser for off-roading
    ~$50,000.
Remainder for my wife's OB (Lift kit, Roo bars, etc.)

Am I the only here that's never driven a roadster?
My worst = 1995 Dodge Neon. Need I say more?

1987 Ford Tempo. Andante at best, Largo at worst, often Tacet.

I thought about it a lot and decided that 2 year old "L" that needs a repaint (dealer left it under a pine tree too long..sap) is worth around 11,500 to me. I mean, the truck runs, I don't love it, but I don't hafta buy a car right now(thanks miksmi and Juice for the offline pep talk). Plus, this L is a MY00 that has been on the lot for ages..over a year. So I offered 11,500 and they said no way, nothing under $14K. Well hey, that is only $1500 under invoice on a 2 year old car with aftermarket paint. I got the OB for $500 under invoice and it was a current MY!! So I walked. Maybe they'll wise up and call back, but that car is headed for the wholesaler and nowhere else. Too bad. I'd have given it a good home in exchange for a great deal.

1981 Chewy Citation - In the shop 18 times in the first 13 months, mainly for manual transmission, carburetion and suspension problems. I claimed the transmission was noisy, the dealer said it was "normal". When it failed at 4,000 miles they discovered that it was virtually oil free from the factory! Suspension failure led to rolling it off a cliff after 13 months, totalling the car. The seat belts worked very well - every car has some strength!

    Hey! If I don't catch up too often, I can 2-for 1!

    100k:
Suburban or YukonXL - fully dressed - guessing 45k
    '02 OB 5spd wagon - say... 25-27?
And the rest for the garage itself... big enough to also house the bus, and which would require power & water extensions from our present service... maybe a lift, or at least air jacks...
    Leftovers, if any... beer fridge!

Worst car: 71 Vega... need I say more?
Runner up: 84 S-10 pickup... gutless wonder!

    Cheers!

Dennis: if you're ever in the DC area give me a ring and we can take Blanca out for a spin.

Well, my mom finally got rid of the worst car she ever owned (a Fiat Uno that rusted after only 12 months of ownership), and now has a new Palio her proud sons chipped in to buy for her. Check it out:

    image

It felt pretty good. She worked a long time, then raised three trouble-making sons, worked again, retired, and got a pension cut every year.

This specs would make you LOL: 1 liter, 54hp, 5 door hatchback.

PS I swear that's the "low" resolution.

    1. Forester L '02 lifted 2" with all skidpads and roo bars I can get, for a more or less serious off-roading $25K
    2. Foresert S+ '02 with leather and all the toys/attachements known to man -- to replace unloved Accord my hubby drives $27K
    3. WRX sedan $25 K (but that whispering voice in me keep on saying "Mustang GT! Mustang GT! -- Ross, help!)
    4. Balance for a decent snowmobile, jetski, and a trailer to tow them

I also like Land Cruiser and some of the Bimmers very much... now, Bob, can I have another $100K raise?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181

Can I change my answer? I forgot my '81 Mustang Ghia. Technically, my dad bought it for me, but I was the primary driver. Does that count?

If so, it definitely takes the cake. The water pump blew once, and it spewed out water like a volcano. It earned the nickname "VOLC" after that fiasco.

It was rust/orange colored, the A/C failed, and it got 17mpg and was still slow (3.3l straight six). It failed emissions so I sold it.

The owner was a friend of my dad's, and he basically struggled with it for a year and then sold it to the junk yard for $50. This was in 1987, so it was only 6 years old, with under 90k miles.

Juice, why this change of heart? Yesterday your minivan choice was Mazda MPV, today Odyssey?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yes, I always name my cars. It gives them a character.

    We have:

Sandy - 98 Forester (driven at OBX)
Blanca - 93 Miata, white of course
    Emmy - 95 626, green of course

Before that we had Spunky, Volc, and Deloris. My mom named her cars after Peanuts characters.

Try it out, but wait until the car names itself. Others here have clever names like Rufus, The Toaster, etc.

a bit of self hypnosis might work. Just keep repeating to yourself "It's a Ford, it's a Ford, ...". My brother has never met a Ford he didn't like (wanted me to wait and get an Escape) and hates Subarus. His # 1 son bought his first car recently - a '95 Impreza wagon. My brother now allows as how Subarus aren't all that bad (after all his son could not err). LOL

For all of you who love racing, some sad news; I have just read on Speedvision that Michele Alboreto, the Audi R8 driver and former Ferrari F1 driver was killed in a testing accident yesterday in Germany. Having watched him over the years, I can say that the racing world has lost another great driver and a true gentleman, one who always had a smile on his face...here is the link to the Speedvision article:

I remember in a chat room someone mistakenly calling him "Al Boreto". It was kind of funny at the time to those of us who knew better.
