Today was the day to return my 2004 OBS, which was coming off lease. I had the dealer purchase it, rather than do the standard return, as the stupid lease company wanted me to return it to an auction site that's not even in the same AREA CODE from where I live. Worked fine...dealer made a fair offer for the buyout and it's now in their hands. So now I'll drive my wife's 2005 Impreza and she'll drive the old Neon we've held on to. Her Impreza is fun to drive, but I'll miss things like the outside temp gauge and the overhead lights. And the fog lamps.

First time I was ever sad about selling a car. What the heck is it with Subaru's that does that?

Just got rid of a Subie I'd had for 14 years, so I feel your pain. It was replaced with another Subaru, though, so that helps. Sounds like you've still got one in the family, too, so you'll be fine. ;)

I was in pain too, when I sold my old trusty Loyale'92.

My Forester is already 6 years old. Boy, do I love that car. Anyone to guess how many miles on it?
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
    Kate,

    I figure around 142,000 miles.

I don't miss many of my cars, but I miss both Subarus. The only other car I really miss is my Suburban- and then only when we go on long trips. I do miss my LGT! I find myself looking at other Subarus on the road a lot. . . looking for my old car. :(

My first "Hi" to everyone. Joined here a few days ago.

I have the '04 OBS, too. I can see why it would be missed. It's my first AWD (never had 4X4 or FWD either) and that alone makes it a tremendous difference.
I like the OBS for its size, just right for carrying stuff around (and the occassional other people)-- except for the way the door armrest is too narrow and low and lack of a center one.
When I test drove the car I was impressed (or Imprez'd) by the little "boxer" engine, also the steering and braking. I traded in a GMC Sonoma with only RWD (but did have 4 wheel ABS) and the change from that kind of driving was a welcome thing.

Only car I really missed leaving was the old family wagon, a Chevrolet Kingswood, which I bought from Dad for just $300 in 1975. It had moved us across the country from Florida to Washington.

I think I'd miss this Subaru, too, if nothing fantastic takes its place someday.

    P.S.
Liked seeing those CARS photos. Wondering now if I could do that to a picture of mine.

then why was the room "open"? .. lol .. yeah, I WAS a day early!

I have "some" emoticons that are 'dark' and "some" emoticons that are 'light' .. what's up with that?

    Tonight's the night Bren.

    ;)

    Honest!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Kate: last time you were where, 120k or so? I'll say 130k miles and still going strong.

I can't believe the Forester is getting that old. Seems to me like they just came out!

Brenda: I know you're the fastest fingers in the world, but a whole day early? Are you warming up that keyboard? :P

Welcome to the Crew, Subi4obs. We chat Thursday nights and this thread is open for just about anything Subaru.

All of my emotorcons have now turned light. Hope they're not fading away to nothing, only leaving little wheels behind. The "lemon" seems fine, though.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
I noticed the other day that they were all dark when I had IE open, but they were all light when I had Firefox open ... and now they're ... 'mixed' .. first 3 are light .. next 2 are dark .. next one light, next 5 dark, next one light, and the lemon bright ... what's going on?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Apparently someone got into the chat on the wrong night and messed a bunch of stuff up. :shades:

Er, it's the new model year?

I missed getting there (chat) by an hour, after closing time, so I'll try again another week. I did go in for a quick look earlier in the day to see if the link worked for me, which it did, and make some echoes in the vast emptiness.
Hope to see people there next time.

    P.S.
I was changing oil in the morning and rechecking my ATF level, too. Been having trouble reading the level in that AT. Well, I added 1/2 Qt. Rechecked level, then I drained at least that much back out. I hate the thing. Can't be sure what's in there!
I'm thinking I need the Subaru dealership to flush it during its 30K mile maintanence and start all over again. You might not have seen I said elsewhere (at Problems messages) that I took 2 Qts out about a month ago after not being able to get a good reading on the dipstick until doing so, afterward adding back a fresh quart.
This is a Impreza Outback Sport, BTW.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
with the 'new' chat format .. does that mean the room is open anytime so that if you pop in there and someone else 'happens' to be in there too ... you can chat?
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
It's not supposed to work that way Bren. Have to look into that!
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
150500. Yep. And I even did't go to the mountains that often lately. Time for the "30K" service ;)

Missed the chat because the wifey got a pretty nasty flat tire. I was out there last night changing it.

The tire is history, no hope for repair. They are the original Potenzas with about 41k miles on them, not bad really.

Fortunately it was already very worn and we need a new set anyway. I put the full size spare that I'd purchase on there but she would have to drive around with no spare at all, so she's using my Forester right now.

I gotta say, mail order is definitely the way to go. Even the cheapie tires at Costco cost about $25 more per tire vs. what I can get on the web.

For my Forester (which I also decided to replace) the difference was even greater, about $35 per tire. Since we ordered 8 of them it ends up being $240 cheaper on-line, yikes! Oh, and that's shipped, and add another 5% savings for the state tax we don't have to pay.

I knew it would be cheaper, but just how much I found a bit shocking.

Got Falken Ziex 512s for both. I love the set on my Miata, great grip even in the rain, so I stuck with those. Fortunately they make the sizes I need for all 3 vehicles.

I'll share impressions once they're mounted.

Holy Cow, Kate. I say make to a quarter million miles, we'll have to make you a T-shirt or something if you do!

Brenda - shhh, we could have kept that our little secret! :D

whattttt? .. whatttt? ... what chat room was open when it shouldn't be ???? ... shhhhhhh
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I think the wider screen is due to Brenda's fast typing...that way the posts don't disappear from the window as quickly! :P

Sorry to hear about the trouble.

I was doing a tread wear check this morning along with air check and found the rear tires getting very near to the minimum wear marks. They were moved from the front a short time ago but seems like they aren't wearing as evenly as they should have done. Only at about 26500 miles on them, the original Potenza 205/55 kind that came with the Impreza OBS.

Anyway... that flat tire of your wife's reminded me of the strangest flat tire I ever had and it was with this car early this year. Front tire kicked up a large hex head (Allen) bolt from the middle of a road. I just didn't notice anything being there until hitting it. Apparently the rear driverside tire caught the bolt as it was being flung upward and speared into the tire.
There was quite a thunk! thunk! thunk! as I slowed to a stop, eventually figuring out it was so big that it was touching the wheel hub inside. So as I rolled it into position for the tire change it almost hopped over the bolt each turn of the tire. Before this happened the only things I had get stuck in a tire were like small screws and nails.

Here's a photo after I pulled it nearly all the way out and then held in my hand.

I have a friend who owns a tire shop/garage and you should see the collection of stuff that winds up skewering tires. That bolt IS an impressive one :surprise:

Heh... maybe Brenda IS responsible for the wider chat screen! All that fast typing slamming up against the right side finally had its effect!
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788

Maybe we need a "Brend-a-meter" to measure typing "Gs" as they round the next line?

I've sprained my eyes trying keep up with her typing. :D

Now that is one BIG bolt, yowsah!

Hey, this was cool, a friend of my brother's is doing driver's Ed, and the car is a 2.2l Impreza with...

    (drum roll)

    314k miles!

    Long live the EJ22!

well guys .. that's it ... my typing so fast created a time warp at my house and that's why i was a day early for chat ...(anyone buying this?)
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
    "Long live the EJ22!"

    I'll second that one!
  • subi4obssubi4obs Member Posts: 32
"typing so fast created a time warp"

Amazing. A kind of type warp, eh? Whole different thing from line wrap, I suppose.

All I ever manage to do when typing is to warp it (misspell, gramatical errors, typos).

Sorry, I just couldn't resist jumping into this.

"Hi" and welcome! (to the crew and to Washington!) And I do miss my Subaru even though I replaced it with a great car- guess it's just not great enough! :D I'm already trying to figure out how to get my next Subie (probably not for a few years though- :( )

Bren- I've tried to get to the chat the day before a few times also- must be looking forward to it! :D

  • subi4obssubi4obs Member Posts: 32
    thanks for another welcome, Tom.

I lived in Washington (state) 15 years but I've been in Alabama a long time now. Um... wow... 21 years, thinking about that. I only visit the families of my two sisters and brother there. I don't see many Subaru's here, maybe only twice a month I notice one. Not like the Seattle area at all. These Dixie people don't know what they're missing. ;)
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Oops, sorry. I thought you moved from Florida to Washington. :D

We got tons of Subies here- almost can't go a block without seeing one!

    tom
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Yep - there's four on my block, just on my side of the street! Of course, two of those are mine. ;)

Not uncommon to have three or four Subies in a row on the freeway - I'd say Outbacks are the most common, followed by Foresters and WRXs. Other parts of the country, I've noticed you'd be lucky to see one a week.

We do have quite a few Subarus in New England, too. Rob M
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
Nicely sprung. Pretty comfortable, but certainly sporting and European in flavor. Firm but not crashy. We drove a slushbox, which does rob the car of its fun factor. The tranny is geared more for low end acceleration than highway merging, as one might expect. It does handle well too. Interior is smartly laid out, but it is also showing its age. I think for folks who aren't in a huge hurry (like me) the better idea is to wait a year and see what the new model is like.

I liked it, but didn't love it, partially because I was driving an auto I guess. As long as the company is paying for fuel I'll continue to drive the FXT and try to ignore my conscience. ;)
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Loosh, it's been my experience that whenever you buy a "lesser" model than what you're used to, you can expect some buyer's remorse. Sometimes it can be minimal, while other times it can be a lot.

    Bob
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
If the company pays for gas, then is it the FXT handling that's making you look at the Fit?

    Ken
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I will be driving one soon myself... just found out my girlfriend of 18 months is pregnant! we weren't trying but I am pretty excited nonetheless. not sure if marriage is in our immediate future, but I do hope it to be something we do eventually.

anyway, I have decided on my own to look at selling my Evo and if I can get a good offer for it I will get rid of it and get something cheaper. heat wave aside, I've been riding a lot more this year anyway so I won't miss it much. I'm considering a Fit or Yaris.

    ~Colin
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
Ken- yea, the handling is an issue. It's actually quite good, but it isn't good enough for me, as that is my primary criterium. I'd trade the power for agility in a heartbeat. But there is no getting around the mileage too. 600 gallons a year difference vs. Fit.

Colin- Woo Hoo! good for you guys. A Fit with good shoes could be a cool car. We put the Britax in there and took Elie with us. It was a nice versatile package.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
And so another of the next-generation "Subie Crew" is now on the way. Congrats Colin!
