If you already bought the contis for an all-season they'll do ok, better than RE92s. My favorite all-season tire has been the Sumitomo HTR+, ran it in everything from blizzards to race-tracks and they worked real well, only downside was a short tread life, but on the other hand they were in the $65-75 range so you can afford to replace em a lot.

335ix is great but it's still a slush-box. Otherwise the 33IX is a great car, but it's pricey...

IMHO, BMW brakes are second to none, OEM for OEM. And with the Euro now past the psychological barrier of 1.40, going to Europe for one isn't going to save you anything. It probably costs USD43k just for the plane ticket ;)

Bob brought up a good point, though. The IS350 was my favorite for the day, but cramped as it is, we'd both rather get a Legacy GT spec.B for less cash.

I don't think the IS is much roomier than the 07 WRX, even. In fact the 08 WRX is probably more spacious.

The GS was better but the drive disappointed me. I expected it to be sportier.

No competitive models this year, just Lexus cars. The event itself was pretty good. If it's coming to a city near you, go for it.

I'm thinking of picking up a used IS300 6MT as a beater when my 240sx goes away. :)

Juice and I also had a chance to sit in the new upcoming IS-F (F=FAST), which is their offering in AMG market. It had great front seats, with super side bolstering. It's powered by a 5.0L 400 hp V8, hooked up to an 8-speed paddle-shifter automatic.

I also agree with the AWD hybrid LS600h as being my favorite, as it was really fast and pampered you to no end. In spite of being a luxury barge, it handled remarkably well when pushed—and we pushed it! But being priced at over $116K, as equipped, it's a true "dream car." IIFC, they had about 6 models there you could drive. In fact there were more of this model than there were of the other hybrid models for test drives. Amazing.

My only regret, after leaving, was that I didn't take that model around the course a few more times, as it is really rare to get an opportunity to drive such an impressive vehicle.

    You have a 240sx?

    I guess I didn't get that memo... :D
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
yeah 240sx beater, 230k miles, 5MT, rattles like crazy, has AC that works and gets like 25mpg+ :)

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You should set it up as a Drift Car. :D

Paint it some cheesy color, like lime green. Or this yellow -> :lemon:
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Nah, I see no point in drift...

But I will gladly sell it to a drifter for about $2500 when I'm done with it :)

Any link to a press release?

I want to post that in the 2008 WRX thread, where the naysayers kept insisting sales were gonna tank. :D

Here's a link if you are still looking for one:

Subaru sales set September record (Journal & Courier in IN)

Subaru media has a chart you can look at too.

I posted both US and Canada sales over in the Cafe. Both countries set September sales records for the new Impreza.

Have you considered the '08 CTS AWD? The new CTS has gotten some great reviews.
  • nickelnickel Member Posts: 147
Yes, and after finding out that BMW dealers are really scarce on their cars (the coupes are sold for the rest of the month, so if I want one I'll have to order), I'll also see the Mercedes C300. But in both cases, I'm going with some doubts, because I don't like their looks, plus I think their engines (my main buying point) are not that strong.
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
I've been impressed with the new Caddys. I just had an '08 STS rental with the new 3.6L DI v6. It's a nicely balanced chassis and there's more than adequate power from the engine. It's quiet, comfortable inside, and the interior has improved tremendously. I would choose it easily over a 5 series (was not too impressed by the 535i) just for the engine alone.

The downside is it's nearing SUV weight at 4300 lbs. If they could shave a couple hundred pounds off of it it would be a truly great car.

I suspect the CTS (at 300lbs less weight) is even a better handling machine with the same drivetrain and finally puts GM on the map with something luxurious and decently fast.

Too bad subaru didn't stick around with GM a little longer! They might have started to benefit from some things. :D

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I don't think GM would have done much to help Subaru. They actually limit what other divisions get, to keep them slotted beneath certain divisions (Cadillac, maybe even Buick).

With rumors of a lightweight sports car in collaboration with Toyota, I'd say no regrets! :shades:
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
You never know Juice- we could have seen a Subie with a 6.0L v8!!!

Ok, you're right. They're probably better off with Toyota. :)

    tom
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I dunno about a lightweight sports car. I have heard of a sub-compact RWD car from Toyota using a Subaru drivetrain though.

I subscribed to a thread (re OCI for turbo Subies) on that other Impreza-focused board started by Bob, and thought I should come over here to catch up. So to start:

Bob: Sorry to hear about Deb but glad to hear the prognosis going forward. Thoughts and prayers your way. Things are getting better here as well.

juice: I had a shingle between my shoulder blades when I was 26 (that's some time ago). No scarring. I was warned they could recur at any time after that but so far they haven't - and I've been through far more stressful things than whatever it was that gave rise to the shingle.

I've been in a full-time, permanent role in a business unit of a large multinational company since March. I'm a very small fish in a very big pond, but the fit is very good and there is potential for the future. Striking the work/life balance has been challenging, however.

My '05 Forester XT hit 40K miles a few weeks ago. My commute stinks but I carpool so only have to drive 2 days/week, 3 at most. No problems (knock wood) with the FXT, though I did have to replace front brake pads/resurface rotors at 37K miles - not under warranty. Nice the dealer service dept. couldn't have told me they needed replacing when I was in for service just before 36K! Had I known I'd have gone aftermarket right away.

Not sure if I mentioned that I finally sold my Studebaker in June. I miss the old car hobby and I hope to get back into it sooner than later, if things continue to progress as they have. The next car will have to be a bit more suited to modern conditions - and be more resaleable - than the Stude. Right now the lead candidate is the BMW 2002.

Ed you should have told me you needed brakes... That's our focus now! Hope you got some good ones.

Thanks Ed, and good to hear from you. Deb goes in for surgery on Wednesday. She's having a lumpectomy, and not a mastectomy, which we're thankful for.

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
    Will keep you posted.

    Bob

Bob, I don't mean to sound flip in my comments, but I'm afraid it "could" sound that way - particularly to your wife ... and I would have emailed this to you directly but don't see one posted in here to use for you ...

I've had to have a biopsy before, and it's very difficult to remain positive even throughout that procedure. Knowing that only a miniscule number of those who go through a biopsy are diagnosed with a cancerous growth is little balm for a chaotically screaming psyche screaming "but what about those miniscule few???" "What if that is me/us?"

Having been diagnosed with anything associated with cancer would set off such a cacophony of thoughts/feelings that I would sleepwalk through each day wondering how the rest of the world managed to go along as if nothing at all has happened ....

When these things happen to you and your family they are no longer "rare" occurrences, but you wonder how/why it has become so intimate with your personal life ...

Please know that my words assuring you that I will be thinking of you are more than just words ... I know of no one who would choose to walk this path you have been given, and anyone who must walk it needs courage to face it ...

I will continue to hope and celebrate the best of the news you send us, but will continue to keep you in my thoughts that the best remains far from the worst ...

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Thanks Brenda. No, I didn't take your comment that way. Yeah, it's been "interesting," for sure... Not sure what kind of follow-up treatment will be needed. We will find that out after the operation.

A Subie with a V8 wouldn't be a Subie. It might even be a great car, but why market it as a Subaru?

Rumors of a twin turbo H6 should appease anyone that needs more than what'll be soon offered in the STI. :shades:

Just to let folks know, my wife and I have a new baby girl born early on 10/5. I think I mentioned at the chat last Thursday night that the baby was coming "any time." Well, it sure was, as the labor started up only a couple hours after I signed off!

Anyway, it was a wonderful experience. We chose a midwife-assisted home birth, and had literally no assistance except for the last 10-15 minutes of the process. It was incredible. I just read today that less than 1% of births in the US happen at home. People are really missing out. :D

We head out on our trip tomorrow, leaving Fairbanks in the F350 to drive to Oregon. We should be passing through Seattle next Wednesday.

    Take care, all!

Indeed, it is, and it is also far less of a system shock than the first go round! Every so often I will pause to look at her and I still find the whole thing hard to believe.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Wow, congrats Wes!

I was gonna suggest "David Michael", naturally, but it's a girl, eh?

How 'bout a name with a K in it somewhere? ;)

    Awesome news!
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
    Congratulations!

Hope mother and baby are doing well!

I will say that having seen everything that can go wrong, I can understand why most births don't occur at home. I'm glad it was a wonderful experience for you though.

    Have a safe trip!

Yes, we named her, but my wife is adamant that I refrain from disclosing our children's names online. As such, I may not share it. :(

    No 'k' though.

I have to run in order to get all the last-minute errands finished. I was just taking a short "will you hold the baby for a few minutes?" break. Play time is over. Not that one-handed typing is much fun, anyway! ;)

She had a lumpectomy on her left breast, and everything went as planned. She is home and resting, and doing well, in fact she's doing great. Next Tuesday we'll learn what the toxicology turns up, and then she will meet with her doctor to figure out what the follow up treatment will be.
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565

Wish I'd thought of that before I submitted my son's pics to Drive a couple of years ago. That said our names are so common that Googling them will result in so many hits that you'd have to know more about us to find out anything else.

    Congrats,

    Bob,
Glad to hear Deb is doing well. Sounds like our prayers were answered.

    Wes,
It takes a few days to be walking on the ground again after the birth of your child! Although both my daughters are in college, I still remember the birth experience. Congrats!
