I cannot do a before photo, as there are no buildings in the city tall enough to allow for a photo of more than just my belly. :P

OK, good news, I confirmed with a certain lady friend who works at SoA and should wear a cape but doesn't (i.e. Wonder Woman), and the prize pile just got bigger.

SoA is in for at least 2 items:

This high quality Rolling Duffel bag from Ogio will provide years
of use and meets all current carry on requirements. Features include a
5800 Cubic Inch main storage compartment, a retractable Pullman
telescoping handle, urethane wheels, 2 large exterior pockets and
multiple grab handles. The bag includes a Black Leather Luggage Tag
debossed with a Subaru Added Security logo.

Enjoy the crystal clear sound of your favorite tunes with this
desktop iPOD Cube Docking Station. This elegant cube adapts to all iPOD
sizes and plugs into your computer or home stereo. The cube charges your
iPOD while in use and has enhanced full range drivers for optimal sound
clarity. White with a Black Subaru Added Security logo.

Item #3 is a 'rolling cooler bag' - it's pretty neat.
Can fit sandwiches, or a couple of six packs - and it has a connector
for an i-pod or MP3 Player to make use of a speaker built into the bag.

Sounds like the winner will be dancing the pounds off even after the Challenge is over. :D

So a nice piece of luggage and an iPod dock plus a cooler with even more speakers were added to the prize pile, to give us a little incentive.

Well, heck, I should actually take this seriously! I think the pounds keep coming on, even though I swear I am eating less....

I am starting to be able to walk normally again after my knee surgery two weeks ago, but I am supposed to wait for clearance from the doctor (on the 23rd) before I am allowed to do things like run, bike, jump, etc.

I'm struggling, to be honest. It's hard to really get started. I am watching what I eat but the kids take up most of my free time. I can't go for long walks with the dog because he no longer has the stamina.

The hardest part is that I'm the only one trying to change my diet, and it's *very* hard when everyone around you is eating as they did before.

    Excuses, excuses, I know.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
    my list of 'excuses' ...

husband just went to nights ... ours schedules are all 'goofy' ...

too busy to plan things correctly and end up snatching stuff that's not necessarily the best

my right foot is giving me fits .. I think I stretched the tendon along the bottom inside ... and so walking is out of the question .. I'm doing good to make it throught he day ..

and yeah, I really do think I'm eating less and eating less 'sweets' .. but either I'm just not moving enough or I'm really deluding myself ...

I'm still game to give it a try, though !

Ha! I just got back from a week-long business trip only to discover that I managed to pick-up 3 more pounds  Exercise wise I'm doing okay, I just need to cut out the junk food ;)

But I was out for a vendor sponsored 4 course meal last night and it's my birthday dinner tonight.....
It sounds like whoever gains the least in the next 3 months will be the winner; maybe we need to agree on principle that shouldn't be entitled to the prizes. LOL.

    week-long business trip

I just got back from a week visiting my sister in VA - apparently all the yard work I did for her (plus eating a bunch of fresh tomatoes) counteracted the BBQs, pizza and fried oysters. I managed to drop two pounds last week.

The Wii Fit that we won in that gaming tournament has a scale, and even estimates your BMI. It help you set goals and stuff, even.

Problem is, the kids are always using the Wii! I'll have to use it after 8pm, when they are asleep.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,726
8pm! Argh. I only *wish* I could get my children to bed that early! Our 4 y.o. son is asleep by 9 if we are lucky, usually more like 10. Our 11 m.o. daughter tends to hang on until 10:30-11 before she finally gives in. I have never seen children who so much hate to go to sleep. :(

I tried to shovel some gravel and move it with a wheelbarrow last night, but my wife intercepted me and insisted I not do it. I think I need to tell her about this competition.... :D

Same here, there is almost always a boy still complaining "I can't sleep" at 10:30, and our toddler is a bear to put down before 9. "More stories!! One more!! Tickle back! More tickle back! Sit down outside! " This is the payback for my method of getting the kids to settle when they were younger. I would slowly transition out of the room to the point of sitting outside with the deal that I would leave if crying started. It worked like a charm to teach them all to settle, but now she plays the game herself. Once we've sat for a couple of minutes, we try to sneak off but she has none of it and calls at regular intervals to check on you. "Are you still outside? Daddy where did you go?" The boys were never that smart. Still, she's a dream compared to how she was as a baby when she'd never settle. I'd routinely carry her around in a Snugglie for an hour with her absolutely comatose, and then try to put her down in the crib and it was like an old horror movie when the monster suddenly opens an eye....It's like they have some crib proximity sensor in their head.

"I have never seen children who so much hate to go to sleep" .....

    you never met mine !!!

The good news is that they DO grow up and eventually it's not your responsibility to get them to bed anymore ....
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
Yea, they grow up. Then they get an attitude when you're still responsible for getting them to bed :P

It's Thursday and that means time again for the longest running chat here in CarSpace, the Subaru Crew! The chat opens at 8:45 pm ET and runs until 10 pm ET. I hope you're able to join us tonight for another enjoyable evening with members of the Crew!
    See you there!

We must have lucked out - we have 3 great sleepers. Big kid used to sleep in til 9 or 10 am, eat, run errands with me, eat again, then nap for 4 hours. This was when he was still in diapers - a subject for another story another day :)

All 3 of them sleep long and well now. Wish i still did :(

    Cheers!

Hahahahah! That nails it, exactly! Our son did fairly well sleeping (though never "slept through the night") when he was still in his crib, but every since he was no longer "caged," he is often a terror in the darkness. Our daughter definitely has (and always has) the proximity sensor. We call it the "Mama Proximity Sensor," as she will sleep anywhere as long as her mama is within a foot of her, but if she moves away, the alarm activates. It cracks me up, but sure annoys her.... :D

I never recall me or any of my siblings refusing to go to bed as preschoolers. I had the urge to get out of bed quite often, but rarely did so in fear of my very life. But, then, I usually felt my parents thought of children as a burden, which is not the impression I want to leave my own children.

I should clarify - that is our goal, though we don't always achieve it.

To be honest it's more like 8:30 they get to bed. Our son falls asleep in minutes but our daughter is usually up reading another hour or so.

I'm still usually free by then, though. I think I need to start exercising at night. I should move our TiVO downstairs, in front of our step machine. :)

    Hello everyone,

It's been a very long time since I visited this board. I've been very bad with keeping up with the bulletin boards I subscribe to as well as with e-mail and letters. It will take me a long time to catch up, and odds are I won't review all the posts I missed.

I paid off my '05 Forester XT last month. It just hit 56K miles last week. Except for replacing both front wheel bearings earlier this year (or was it late last year? can't remember) the car has been trouble free, knock wood. Fuel economy stays consistent at approximately 21 mpg combined driving (60/40 highway/city, though about half of that highway proportion is stop-and-go on the bloody PA Turnpike). High has been a bit over 23 mpg, low around 18.

My work-life balance hasn't been that great. Commute is 40+ miles each way and an average of 1'10". Since last spring and until last week, I had a carpool partner. Unfortunately we just had layoffs and I lost my carpool partner. I survived the layoffs but absent some arrangement where I can telecommute more the FXT will start racking up more miles again. The bulk of my non-work time is spent raising my son. He's had his challenges but has made great strides in many areas. He will turn 5 in November; it seems like only yesterday that he graced the pages of Drive magazine.

I do miss participating in this group as well as the swag and access to other events. For the first time in many years I didn't receive tickets to the Philadelphia Flower Show from SoA. I guess I need to buy a new Subaru more often. On the other hand the Subaru MasterCard Bucks will pretty much pay for my upcoming 60K service.

I also miss participating in the old car hobby. I sold my old Studebaker last spring and subsequently discontinued membership in the local and national Studebaker clubs. Last month I came very close to rejoining the hobby. I was the second highest bidder on an eBay auction (not a Studebaker) and expressed my interest to the seller should the winner not come through on the deal. The winner didn't come through; however when I asked the seller if I could have an independent mechanic inspect the car for me, he replied that he had sold the car to another party. I've since seen on a bulletin board for that marque that the ultimate buyer has since had problems with the car. I guess I should be grateful that my deal didn't go through. :lemon: :confuse:

I hope this finds everyone well, and I hope I can find time to visit these forums more often in the future.

    Take care,
    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Good to hear from you, Ed.

I can't believe your son is 5 already!

What's been going on? Well, we just started the Subaru Crew Diet Challenge. You want in? The person that losest the highest percentage of their start weight wins. Edmunds chipped in a T-Shirt and so far SoA is in for some luggage, a cooler, and an iPod dock with speakers.

You did say you missed the swag... ;)

Yeah, I left as soon as I saw the 2nd plane hit, knowing DC would be a target. Sadly I was right. :(

On that day I expressed concerns about our NYPD buddy but he was OK, he posted later.

And yes, we went ahead to the Pine Barrens, if anything we were even more determined to go.

My parents live about 25 miles inland from Galveston. Dad picked up Mom from the nursing home yesterday when they called him to let him know they were evaculating. They are at their house which does have real 'storm' shutters which are closed down and latched. The house went through Alicia in 83 just fine and that was a Category 3 storm. They left during Rita and ended up on the road for 20 hours to go less than 100 miles to my brother's house -- and ended up being in a more dangerous place than if they'd stayed at home ... and Rita was a Category 5.

Daughter's family is about 50 miles inland and they will go to stay at her mother in law's instead of in their mobile home.

Aunt lives near Beaumont and they have gone about 200 miles inland. Right now their home looks to be in the most 'direct' line of fire from the storm ...

Please keep them all in your thoughts ...

No - my brother tried to get them to go .. he tried to get them to come to his house about 70 miles inland ...

they should be 'ok' barring a hit by a tornado (which could also happen inland) ... the main thing I'm worried about for them is if the storm surge pushes up in Galveston Bay and into Clear Lake it will push a creek toward their house ... They are at an elevation of about 28 feet above sea level ...

Hello all! I wish we had this contest a couple years ago when I dropped 45 lbs! But 15 lbs crept back on (beer and snacks) and I want to knock them off before ski season starts so I can fit into my skinny ski clothes (sold most of the fat ones). I dropped 6 lbs in the last week, so my current weight is 198lbs. Want to hit 190lbs. I'm afraid that won't be a big percentage, but the competition will be good. So consider me a phantom contestant.

One thing that works remarkably well for me is to cut my meal portions in half, and then eat slower with smaller bites. According to my wife, that means I eat normally rather than wolfing food down and getting seconds like I normally do. Anyhow, I don't seem to miss the extra food. It just comes down to a mental training issue, and savoring smaller bites.

    Rock on!

How did your family make out with Ike? Have you been in touch with them, or is phone service out?

    Bob
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
Talked with Dad yesterday morning. They appear to have made it through OK. Some residual danger of some flooding due to 'stopped up drainage' but I think their house will be OK.

Oldest daughter called her sister yesterday morning and they were OK. Big trees down all around, and I'm not sure the worst had passed them yet. We have yet to get in touch with them again, but they lose all power and phone when they have any kind of weather - much less a hurricane.

Aunt had talked to a neighbor who stayed and it sounds like they have some damage to the roof in the area of their master bath, but won't be able to get back in to see until at least tomorrow.

Heard from 2 friends in the area and they both came through OK ... so sounds like people are fine, and mostly with only minor property damage.

    Thanks for asking, Bob ...

Tell them to hang in there, hopefully their houses are unaffected. They key is they are safe.

    Hey Brenda,

Glad to hear that (so far) everyone appears to be fine. I'll keep my fingers crossed until you get the "official" word on everyone.

I've gone into my own "hurricane" watch as of early this morning with the news that Bank of America is buying Merrill Lynch. No one seems to be saying much except that there will be "some layoffs", just no numbers yet as it is still too early to tell. Keeping the fingers crossed.

my parents were without power until Wed night.. I was really worried about them as the storm shutters have been down and latched for so many years (to keep out the heat) that they no longer open - so even with windows opened not much air can circulate .. luckily there was a cool front by Monday that dried out the air and kept it a bit cooler ..

heard from daughter this morning and their power was restored today ... they had lots of poles down and trees to be cleared to get to them .. still have friends who will likely be without power until the first week of Oct !

Mark - sorry about the news ... wishing you all the best ... we're still nervous over the husband's job .. a recent announcement said his company is laying off 6,000 workers nationwide .. their plant is claiming they've already had all they will have .. but the same person also told my husband about 3 weeks ago that he wouldn't have to go back to nights ...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Must be hard, but at least that are OK and that's what matters most.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
We still have crews down there who will be down there for another 3-4 weeks.

I think they are restoring about 500-1000 customers a day.

This afternoon I got rear-ended in my WRX on the American Legion Bridge, which crosses the Potomac River just above Washington, D.C.

The traffic had slowed to a stop very quickly, and I had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting the car in front of me. I then got hit by someone doing maybe 50 or 60 mph from the rear. I was pushed into the car in front of me that had slowed to a stop. I may have hit that car at maybe 30 mph or faster. I was in the fast lane, and my car then went up on to the jersey barrier that blocks oncoming traffic. Next my car then careened into the middle lane hitting another car, or two, or three. I ended up maybe 50 yards down the road as I had lost my brakes at that point.

All told there were 5 cars involved, and I think I hit, or was hit, by all of them.

I walked away with a big bruise on my right shin, and a skin tear and bruise on my left forearm, where the airbag went off. I think my car may be totaled, but I'll have to let the insurance people figure that out.
