Glad to hear you are ok. But that's not the healthiest way for you to get yourself a new WRX.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Bummer Bob. Go get checked anyway. Stuff may not show up immediately.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
I agree on getting checked out ... but you sound VERY lucky indeed! And the car seems to have protected you well ...
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Oh, they took me to the hospital (Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD), so I did get checked out.

I'm a little sore this morning, but nothing major. The WRX protected me really well.

Now the fun starts—dealing with insurance, getting a car rental, plus somehow I lost my glasses. I'm using an old pair right now, so I have to get a new pair.

    Bob-

glad to hear that you are OK. Sounds like the car did what it was supposed to do- protect you!

Hopefully the insurance process, and everything that goes with that, will go smoothly.

So sorry to hear about your accident, but VERY glad that you were not seriously injured. :surprise:

    Thanks Karen—and everyone else too!

Glad to hear you were not seriously hurt. Cars can be replaced, no matter how much we love them.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Glad to hear you are ok. Without seeing the wreck, I'd bet my next paycheck that the car is totalled. It doesn't take much, only 80% of the value to total it out. Anytime you are "ontop of the jersey barrier" I'd think it's a total loss.

:( I know how much you liked that car. STi this time around????

If it's a total Mike, I don't know—especially with the financial and credit market being what it is. My first choice would probably be a new Nav-equipped WRX, but I could just as easily end up with something like a Honda Fit.

They're hoping to have an insurance adjuster look at it this week. Yesterday it was towed to Herb Gordon Subaru's collision center. Deb and I went to get stuff out of it yesterday, and took pictures. The car's a mess. Even the rear suspension is screwed up as the left rear tire is tucked under a bit. From the windshield forward it's a write-off. The rear is not too badly damages, but the front is a mess, even the front wheels were pushed back, so the chassis is definitely affected..

I am surprised—and impressed—at how strong the passenger cage is. All 4 doors and the hatch open and close with no problem. None of the glass broke. If this were a lesser car, I don't think I would have walked away from this accident.

I'm not sure how to get pictures off Deb's camera (I had a problem once before with that) and my son had to help me out. It's got a smart card I think, and my Mac. doesn't have an adaptor. Once I get them on my computer, I'll post them.

Ow ow ow. Especially the left front. Looks like the cabin did its job.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
It sure did. All the white scuffing is from the jersey barrier.

Ouch! I would have bet it was totaled even before I saw the pics... now there's no doubt :(

Glad to see that the WRX's safety features performed as designed and kept you relatively unscathed.

I like those wheels, will they let you salvage them?

    -Frank
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
If they do, you want 'em? A couple of them are pretty scuffed up from the accident.

    Bob
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
What size are they? Scuffs can usually be buffed out or fixed (for a lot less than the cost of a new wheel). I'm sure you'd find someone who would pay you for them.

    -Frank

P.S. In case it wasn't apparent from my previous post... I'm glad you're okay ;)

We can have a bunch of "Bob's still alive" chat this week :)

Tuesday means Mazda chat night! Mazda ownership is not a requirement! :) Just bring yourself and your love of cars and the desire to discuss anything and everything automotive and you're good to go!

The chat opens at 8:45 pm ET and runs until 10 pm ET. I hope you're able to join us tonight to meet and greet with your fellow CarSpace members!

Wow Bob, glad you're ok! The car doesn't look so good but I'd certainly trade a car for someone's life anyday!

Not the best way to go new car shopping though.

You must be pretty sore today. Take some motrin (with food!) and it should help with the muscle aches and pains.

Ahhh... Ibuprofen... ski patrol candy :D

Hi Tom - Glad to see you're still upright & able to take nourishment!

    Cheers!

over here in bicycle land we call it "vitamin i."

Bob, glad you are ok. I'd reckon that car is totalled, friend. Especially if there's any major damage inside the engine bay. Good luck with the hassles....I'm still dealing with some from our rear-end adventure, thanks to PA state rules- apparently since it was a car accident that sent us to ER, it goes to our auto policy. So now, even though we are fine, i am buried in a mountain of PIP paperwork, from my own carrier.
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Yes, great stuff for muscular pain!

Hope things are going well with you Paul- it's been super busy with kids and work and church and stuff for me

Maybe next year I'll do one of these bicycle tours that rides from Seattle to eastern washington and can drop by and visit the fire station!

Mariners were pretty miserable- saw one of their last games (glad it wasn't loss #100) and it's amazing how empty the stadium was.

    Take care Paul!

Busy, kids, all of the above.

    Cheers!

    Mike,
I sent you an email with doc attachment...I think last week
  • lilbluewgn02lilbluewgn02 Member Posts: 1,089
    Bob,
you are indeed lucky, yet the WRX did its job superbly...I'm amazed there is so little rear damage.
The car is replaceable; you are not. I'm glad you are OK
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Bob, I'd be up for your brake calipers!

    Ahh the vultures swoop in!

Looks like it held up real well considering what it went through. :)

    DOH! Frank called 'em first.

Dibs on the brakes...DOH! mike called those.

Just kidding. I read the blog entry and spoke to Bob to express my concern, but he seems to have escaped unscathed for the amount of damage we see.

Wow, though, that's a total loss for sure. That means the insurance company will take posession of the whole thing.

We should have a poll on what new car Bob should get.

(juice - the bruises have not even healed yet!)

I know, I know. Until we weight in for the Diet Challenge this would be a fun game.

I vote for an 09 WRX, since Bob liked the enhancements so much.

How about a shiny new Nissan GT-R? :P
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Funny you should mention that. There's a guy at my gym who has 3 GT-Rs. One is for himself, and the other 2 he's going to sell at a profit.

    Not to me though...

    Bob,

After seeing the pics of what is left of your car, I'm glad to hear that you are ok. As mentioned, a car is replaceable- you aren't.

    Hang in there with everything!

Haven't been on in a week or two and was doing some catching up when up I saw the post and pics of your accident, Bob. So glad your Subie kept you safe!

How well you came out of it would be pretty good incentive to replace your WRX with another Subaru... at least that'd be the way I'd feel. :)

And - since this is a vote, right? - with this economy I'd hang on 'til the end of the year for a good deal on an '09 WRX Premium and hope to get a glimpse of the next-gen Legacy GT in the meantime, just in case it's spectacular. :shades:

Thanks Jeff. Still no word on the damage estimate, as it is being worked on. Also, the police report is still being worked on. So at this point I know no more than when I originally posted the news. Hopefully I will know something soon.

I suppose, but the caps on all the nouns hurts my brain. I guess he got in touch with his inner Teuton when he was injured.

I'm declaring the chat an "angst free zone" tonight so we can all relax and escape from reality, if just for an hour :P

After a long time in the nursing home in NJ and being on hospice care the last 2 weeks, my mom passed away at 4AM this morning. She was a holocaust survivor, having spent almost 4 years in Lodz Ghetto, then sent to Stutthof concentration camp.

Her and my dad met at a DP camp and married shortly thereafter. Her stories are typical of many survivors, and she made the best of her life with my dad in NY then Florida. She went back up north a few years ago, but was not happy. Last year, she had to be moved due to a fractured pelvis, which she broke again 2 months ago. I believe that it was at that time she basically gave up. Everytime I came up for a visit, she looked worse, and her dementia was at a point where she did not remember our visits. At least we had a chance to see her when we brought Michael up to school.

She was an incredible cook, and I will miss her chicken soup, her stuffed cabbage, her kugel (noodle pudding), and especially her apple cake.

    Serge

I am very sorry to hear this news. She sounds like she was a wonderful person, and that you were very lucky to have her as a parent, and for so long. She's probably in a better place now. Again, my condolences go out to you, Michael, Susan and anyone else who was close to her.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you, Michael and the rest of your family.

    Sorry to hear that, Serge.

I hope you got that chicken soup recipe?

Mom is always the best cook.

It's Thursday and that means time again for the longest running chat here in CarSpace, the Subaru Crew! The chat opens at 8:45 pm ET and runs until 10 pm ET. I hope you're able to join us tonight for another enjoyable evening with members of the Crew!
    See you there!

Condolences, Serge. I just got back from a quick visit with my 87 year old mom. Still mentally sharp which is a blessing, but the body is getting frail.

She'll be the first to admit that she's a lousy cook (turned me into an ok one by necessity however!). That said, I still managed to put on 4 pounds in 5 days at her place, even without hitting a single BBQ shack.
