OK, we need a new official Subaru Crew mascot. :(

Hadji passed away last night, peacefully, while sleeping. He lived 15 long years, 105 in dog years. Poor guy was ready to go - pancreatis, heart murmur, high blood pressure.

I'm doing OK, probably because I had been preparing for this for the last 2 months, but I'm a bit worried about my 9 year old daughter.

On a lighter note, cats have 9 lives, so he's got 8 left, right? ;)
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Oh wow, juice. I'm so sorry to hear that. Yeah, it will be tough on the kids. In time they'll get over it.

We're worried about Annie. She's been going down hill pretty rapidly this past year, especially the last few months. She has trouble breathing, and she's on pain and arthritis meds as well. She's 12, and for a Golden, that's getting up there.

It's really, really tough when you lose a pet.

    Juice,

Sorry to hear about Hadji. While it is sad that he went, at least it was in his sleep and that you had the extra few weeks since you went to the vet.

It was toughest on my daughter.

Juice, sorry to hear about Hadji. As much as we all joked about him, he was part of the crew and a faithful part of your family. Let your daughter (and your family) grieve...it's part of the process, and sometime down the road, get another dog from a shelter.
Meanwhile, Dina has volunteered to be the mascot...

    Hey folks,

As of yesterday I became another casualty of the economy and mergers as I was let go from my job after 22+years. A heck of an early birthday present! At least I'll be able to read more stuff here on Edmunds :) .

Here's hoping everyone else is doing well.

Mark, that sucks bigtime....keep your spirits up. You also have more time to wash and wax your Subie...don't forget the inside of the wheels (right, juice?)

Ouch! Sorry to hear that Mark. As Serge said, keep your spirits up—and wax that car! Hopefully a job that you like will turn up shortly.

I'll echo those sentiments, aside from the car waxing! :P

Bob, has your WRX situation reached any resolution?

Juice, I am glad to hear it all happened peacefully. In a way, that makes it all much easier to bear, especially for the children.

As for the extra eight lives, I have found through my cat ownerships that those critters have ways of using up those tokens without the rest of us even realizing one was spent.... :(

That's right, every 7500 miles when you rotate them.

At the risk of losing my OCD Club Membership card, I've slacked off as other priorities have taken over.

Maybe Mark can open a car detailing biz...I'd be the first client!

Bob, has your WRX situation reached any resolution?

Looking to get a new '09 WRX Premium 5-door, maybe within the next week or so. I've driven a couple of them and they are really very nice—and very quick!

I've heard from Allstate. The car is a total loss, and they're giving me close to $20K for it, which is about right. Met with my accountant today, and he's given me the green light. Also got my SOA VIP coupon in the mail today. So things are moving ahead.

Much to juice's surprise I'm sure, I may forgo the NAVI, as it really doesn't seem to be that good of a system—which he's told told me 1000 times already! I played around with one the other day, and came away rather disappointed. It was slow to accept changes, and froze trying to find my home address. I've also been in touch with Edmunds editor Erin Riches. and she found it to be lacking as well when she took their long-term NAVI-equipped STI on a 400 mile trip. So maybe a Garmin is in the cards as well?

Now guys no matter what I try I cannot get into the chats, I get into some room but I am all alone, does not work for the Mazda chat either. This has been a problem since I changed my computer. I now have Kaspersky anti virus instead of Norton, could that be the problem?

    Cheers Pat.

Chats are on Tues/Thurs, today is Wed!

Mark, you can always use the shop to detail your car!

Bob: Cool choice, I'd get a Garmin, they have a new one out which has IIRC a 5" screen, I know you wanted one with a bigger screen so that may do it for yah. I'll look up some details on it for you too.

Bob- I got a Nuvi 660 for my B-day last month and I'm very satisfied. I did some research a while back and it got very high marks so I just waited until the price came down to a reasonable level :)

    No, I'm actually not surprised.

Though I am glad you pushed me to try it out - that what real friends ought to do. Ask questions that help you come to a well-informed purchase decision.

For $1800, the screen is not that bright, the interface is only so-so, and it doesn't even come with a backup cam, like the Tribeca's. That would help you back up to mount a trailer hitch, for instance.

I'm not sure if the region was set on the one I test drove, but it seemed clunky and could not find the two Exxon stations on Rockbille Pike near White Flint Mall, which have been there for ages.

Garmins are far from perfect (still no Bridgeville McDonalds, after how many decades?), but the interface is 10 times easier to use, and the screen is actually brighter. Sound is not as good, and the screen sizes are still smaller, but you pay only a fraction of the price, and you let your wife or kids borrow it.

Be careful about that, though! Wifey stole my first Garmin. :D

Today, I would probably buy a Nuvi 700 series. Not sure which one, but I like the idea of traffic capability, plus the improved satellite receivers, and the ability to add Custom POIs (points-of-interest).

    With a 2009 WRX, you'll need the speed-trap POI database. ;)

Frank, my grandparents have one of these as well. They had me set it up for them prior to our trip to Washington through Canada last fall. It was mounted on the dash of their motorhome, and worked quite well for them. They even figured out how to use it, which means it must be a very intuitive interface. ;)

That sounds fantastic, Bob; I'm excited for you! A friend of mine recently purchased a 2.5i manual Impreza, so I have had the opportunity to ride in it a few times; my first time in a Subaru of any kind since selling the '08 Outback in February. The new iteration of Impreza has a wonderful, familiar interior. It is better laid out, I think, than the 05-09 Legacy/Outback. Riding in it has started me thinking about owning another Subaru, even though I will still to wait another 2-3 years. It is going to be a long wait. The more I think about it, I would love to get a WRX, STI, or XT (GT, if they go back to the Legacy wagons in the next generation), but I think my wife would shoot me down on that one; or, she might just shoot me and take the car. :D

Anyway, I am glad to hear that it is working out for you.

Well, you having driven a new WRX, I am very jealous. How did it compare to the old model in sedate driving? I had a concern that the bigger turbo might make it prone to bogging off the line if one is sloppy with the clutch. The reviews about the new level of handling is what has my attention.
I should be getting my test drive next week, but I can't wait!!!! Tell me, tell me now!Unfortunately I am now thinking that the WRB coming in might look a little "racer-boy" for my style, and was thinking that the car looks amazing in Dark Grey Metallic and very understated. Any idea which colour you might get?
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
The new generation Imprezas are much more refined than the older models. Also for '09 they've added rear fender liners to further quell road noise.

Compared to my 2.5 '06 WRX, the bottom end power seems to be about the same, although I was told it may be a tad less. It does come on stronger at around 3K though, and stays strong right up to redline. The old model seemed to go flat after 5K or so, not this new '09 model. C&D just posted a 4.7 second 0-60—so yeah, it's quick! http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot_lists/high_performance/evo_wrx_zone/2009- - _subaru_impreza_wrx_short_take_road_test?cid=338 The steering seemed a bit more responsive as well_and the slot car handling is back for '09.

It's like they took every aspect of the old-generation car, and made each tiny item just a tad better and/or a bit more refined. For example, there are a bunch more speeds available on the intermittent front wiper. The moonroof has an auto-open and auto-close feature. The rear wiper now has a fixed and intermittent speed. I could go on, put you get the point.

As to color? Either white, dark gray or black are my first choices.

Thank goodness, that is one of the few complaints I have about the 04 I have - that you have to sit there on the button for what feels like forever to open and close it.

    Alittle late here but...

Bob, sorry about your mishap but I'm glad to read you are ok and things are coming around for you.

Serge, my condolences to you and your family. Keep your spirits and head up. I'm sure your Mom would've told you the same thing.

Mark, sorry to hear about your job lay off after 22+ yrs. This economy is doing a number on us. Especially those doing contract work (like me). Finished my contract and now looking for work.

Let's stay positive folks.. We'll get passed this :)
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
Thanks for the thoughts folks. It's been a bit crazy and all but we are hanging in there.

Bob- if you are looking at the Garmin's there is a new series just coming out, the 755T and up that now has lane assist, 2 types of traffic and routes (something I miss on my 370). They keep on improving the systems so by the time you are ready, and with the way the economy is going, you should do pretty well price wise. If you go to http://gpsinformation.net/ there are some links to some good retailers.

Brenda- hope everything is going along well with your folks.

Elm- good to hear from you and sorry to hear about your contract running out. My wife is in the same situation. Her contract ran out awhile a go and was taking it easy until now. Now she's been applying to everything she finds, as well as asking the consulting company for any openings.

As my Mom used to say, I'll take it one day at a time" and not go crazy.

I think I'll be waxing the rims on the winter tires this week so they can be ready for the swap out at Mike's place. ;)

    Hang in there everyone!

For what seems to be my once a year hello. ;)

Mark - Sorry to hear about the layoff. Hope you find something to your liking.

Bob - I'd seen on NASIOC that you got an '09 WRX but hadn't heard the "why". Yikes! Glad you're OK!

Serge - Sorry to hear about your Mom passing. Yes, Mom's cooking is always the best. ;)

Juice - Sorry to hear Hadji passed. Sounds like he was quite the companion. Whether purring or barking. ;)

We still have the '05 LGT Wagon and are still loving it. I think I had a rear wheel bearing replaced since I was last here. Oh and got some summer wheels and tires. The British Black Prodrive GC-05's look great on it. Couldn't resist getting them when Prodrive was leaving the US Market in the late winter/spring. I think they're back now but a sale is a sale. :D

My wife and I have been test driving some nice cars lately as she's been looking to upgrade her '93 Acura Legend Coupe. We've driven an Infinity, an Audi and a BMW all automatics. The Infinity G35x Sport felt a bit large, had a great Nav system and was quite nice all around. The '09 Audi A4 V6 w/o Sport package was nice but need to drive it again when not in the middle of a torrential downpour with grape size hail. The '08 335i with sport package was quite nice but the loop the salesman took us on was only surface streets so we couldn't get much of a feel for it. It was rush hour though so the highway wouldn't have been any better.

I tried to get her to drive a new Subaru Legacy but she really doesn't much like the sedans and we've already got a wagon so...

The Bimmer is leading the pack at the moment. Although she's not sure she needs the turbo version and wants to drive the 328i as well. I'll keep pulling for the 335 though. :D;)

    Cheers!

we have snow ON THE GROUND .. this is too freaking early!

    (global warming I'm sure ....)

coming home last night (about 8:00), was driving through this mix of heavy rain, sleet, and snow ... and by about 9:00 it was just snow .. big puffy flakes and beautiful from inside .. but won't be so pretty this morning!

living in an area where it snows every year, I have learned that every year some people (lots of them apparently) have no long term memory of driving in snow and have to relearn each and every year .... always amazes me ..
  • goneskiiangoneskiian Member Posts: 381
    Shucks! :D;)

Yep, same here Brenda, but at least we are passed the "new snowfall" stage now. Our first snow was a month ago! Early snow, indeed. It was nearly -20F this morning! :shades:

Personally, I think that people who drive on snow/ice for nearly seven months out of the year should have no problem "remembering" how to drive on it. But, alas, they do. I think the biggest problem is that they never learned to begin with!

Congrats on your new ride. Just make sure you take out time to wash it ;)
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Congrats, but that was just a tease. Need more meat on the driving impressions!!! I was looking to you to be a good source of how the old 2.5T and this model compared.
I had my test drive of the WRB today and posted about it on the WRX forum. It lacked a bit of the edge the 04 has, replacing it with a more refined feel in every area - ride, handling, shifting. Turbo lag is surely there, but much less of that rubber band effect that the 2.0 has. A real plus is that it was very sedate being driven in grandma mode on the residential streets.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
more refined feel in every area - ride, handling, shifting.

and this is a bad thing? If you want an all out hard riding track car, look at the EVO.

You misunderstood me Mike, I consider them all good things, and I was actually very impressed by its level of refinement. I had wondered if it would be more STi like in its driving manners given the performance changes, but it was certainly not. My only STi experience was from driving my neighbour's 05 and I found that hard to drive sedately and smoothly in dense city traffic, and I wouldn't want it for a daily driver.
BTW, do you know if the rally armour front skid plate for my 02 WRX will fit the new model??
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788

Oh you'll get them, just let me pile on some miles. :) I'm taking it easy (keeping it under 4K rpm) until it's broken in. As of this posting I've only got about 110 miles on it, of which I may have put on 60 or so. The dealer put on 50 or so miles, as they had to get it from another dealer in Northern Virginia.

I will say this: The engine seems to be a bit more flexible than the old one. The '06 model didn't like being in 5th gear below 50 mph unless the road was flat. The new one seems a bit happier in 5th down even as low as around 40 mph. That makes for easier driving, and hopefully maybe even better gas mileage.
