    Hey All,

Since I jumped ship, sold the WRX, and bought a RAV back in 06 I haven't been around here.

Just spent a little time reviewing some of the postings thinking I might catch up but quickly realized that would take more than a few minutes.

I'm still running around with a black cloud over my head, apparently. On Aug. 2nd lightning hit a power pole next to my house and a 13KV line dropped onto my AC unit .. backfeed the electrical panel and set the house on fire. In the process, all of my computers were fried as well as anything electronic. Here I am over 3 months later still waiting to get back home. I am getting close ... hopefully around Thanksgiving.

Good grief Hutch! That's terrible! Hope you get squared away soon.

BTW, I've got a new '09 WRX, thanks to an 5-car accident back in late September (I was rear-ended by a Volvo), which totaled my '06 WRX.

    Keep in touch! :)

    Wow, welcome back!

    :)

13kv sucks. I work at the power company now and deal with that stuff all the time.

Holy Moly! What a freak occurence!

Hey, if you feel up to it, you should try to come down to DC for the auto show in January. I usually go there with Bob.

Won't be crowded this year! :D

Plus, it's now after Detroit, so they tend to get all the latest stuff. Let us know if you're interested (same applies for anyone else).
  • thecatthecat Member Posts: 535
    Thanks for the "welcome".

Bob .. I guess those Volvo's are only safe if the driver isn't tailgating. Well, as long as nobody got hurt.

AJ - the DC show is do-able. Email me with the details. For awhile I was working in Silver Springs .. but that's a long story better told in person.

Paisan- Oh yeah, 13kv will do a lot of damage. Ended up taking the house down to studs so we could get to all of the wire. So, if I survive the experience, I'll end up with a new home

    Hutch.

Cool, let me know if you guys work something out for the DC Auto Show. I may be tempted to head down for the weekend and hookup with you guys. I haven't seen Juice, Bob or Hutch in Forever!

    Edmunds meet???

By the way I'd love to get Bob and/or Hutch up to SOA on Jan 16th for the kickoff of http://48hrs.info The 2009 48hrs of Tristate. We raised $13,000 last year with SOA's help matching our funds. This year they are going to match up to $7k and our goal is $8k on our side so that would give us at total of $15,000 raised by Subie Drivers!

    :)

48 Hours unlikely as my new WRX has summer tires, and snow tires (and extra wheels) aren't in the budget right now.

Should break 1K in the next day or so—so redline, here I come! :)

    Bob
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
How about popping up to SOA for the morning with your WRX? I don't think you'll hit any snow from your house to Cherry Hill?

    :)

The kickoff should be a blast. If not then spread the word about the raffle and ACS donations :)

I'll be on a Disney Cruise.

On a different note, my house will be empty anyway so it's tempting to offer it for rent for the inauguration. I heard some houses in the DC area renting for several thousands! :surprise:

Some houses are fetching up to $10-12 grand, no kidding.

If they trash the carpet I could get new carpet!

I doubt we'll do it, just tempted.

My brother lives in a rodeo town, close to the grounds. The town swells from about 16,000 people to about 60,000 during the week of the event. He takes a short vacation that week and rents out his house for four nights. At a few hundred a night, he pays his mortgage for a couple months that way. ;)

So far, he has found that the renters are extremely respectful of the property.

I can't seem to follow the link to see whatever it is ...

Everyone who is travelling - please stay safe ...

Everyone who is cooking - please keep the perspective of "enjoying" the family in spite of the work ...

Everyone have a great Thanksgiving ..

Brenda, we had to put Annie, our 12-year-old Golden Retriever, down this morning.

She had several issues, the worst being that her windpipe was closing, making it difficult for her to breath. With company coming for the holiday—and bringing two other dogs, we felt the stress would be too much for her to handle. If it wasn't this morning, it probably would have been within the next couple of weeks.

Not a great way to start the holiday...

oh oh oh ... I'm so very sorry, Bob. Our pets become part of our families. I can totally empathize with you on this one. Very sad, I agree ...

Sorry to hear about Annie, but I am sure thet you and Debbie are thankful that you had her for 12 wonderful years.

I too had an eventful morning yesterday...my divorce became final at 9:02 AM with the words from the judge "you are now divorced...good luck". And with that, 22 years of my life are now closed. A bittersweet moment, to say the least, but Susan and I can now move on, knowing that we still created a wonderful talented son.

To all, have a great and safe Thanksgiving and try not to watch ALL the football games. I have to watch at least 10 minutes of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

Serge, I certainly can empathize with that 'bittersweet' feeling of a divorce after a long marriage ... was married 26 years, and even though it was my 'choice' to divorce, my first hope would have been that we could have made it work ...

what I will tell you is that it gets better all the time, and there is 'life' after divorce .. .

may you find as much happiness as I have found in my 'second' life ..

Bob- I'm truly sorry to hear about Annie. That truly is a rotten way to start the holiday :(

    -Frank

P.S. Link didn't work for me either.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Thanks Frank. and everyone. I took the link down, as it really wasn't appropriate for the Straightline blog (not car-related).

The best memories I have of Annie was when we would take her out to the country, and let her run free when she was younger. I can't ever remember seeing an animal with so much spirit and joy. She would just run and run until she collapsed. It was a beautiful thing to watch.

Serge, bittersweet for sure. As you said, now both of you can move forward, which is always a good thing. I hope your holiday is a good one. :)

It's terrible when you have to put down a pet that has been in your household for years. Our last dog was a combination of a golden lab and german shepard. Had to put her down when the arthritis got so bad it took her many tries to get to her feet. Now we're down to 2 cats.

Very sad news. I know how it feels as our last dog had arthritis and spinal stenosis.
Currently our older dog is only 7 and she's already starting to show the signs. In her prime she'd cover 30 miles on a ride and be ready to go the next day. Now I have to lift her into the back of the car after a spirited run with the puppy.

Bob she was a beautiful animal, unfortunately the last act of kindness you have to do for your beloved friend is heartwrenching. So sorry for your loss.

    Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Great photo, sorry to hear about Annie.

My daughter will be bummed because she looks forward to seeing her when we come over.

To this day I still occasionally walk downstairs late at night to walk a dog I no longer have. :(
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Hey folks, it's that time of the year—that being garage. er... stocking stuffing time!

...And in the spirit of a depressed economy, the budget has been slashed from $100K to $50K; and as usual, the rule is it has to be on sale by 12/25/08.

So, for fifty big ones, what sort of wheels you want Santa to put under your tree this year?

Me? I've already got my present with my new WRX. :)

Riley has deteriorated markedly over the last 4 months....I always thought of her as a 15-16 year doggie, but we are preparing ourselves for the notion that it's maybe going to be 13-ish. She'll be 13 in March.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    $50k!? But Santa... ;)

    OK, OK, let's see.

I've had my eye on a PRHT Miata. In fact I already have the price handy. I can't decide between a basic Sport model or a GT, so let me present 2 scenarios:

$26,844 for a 2009 Forester XT Ltd auto
$22,524 for a 2008 PRHT Miata Sport manual
$632 gas card to offset about 2 years of premium fuel surcharges for both

    or...

$26,290 for a 2008 PRHT Miata GT manual loaded up
    $22,838 for a 2009 Forester 5MT X Premium AWP + PZEV
$872 gas card for the premium fuel for the Miata

It would be tough to choose between those two. We already have an auto Forester, but it's not an XT, then again I'd really like to have a manual.

I think I'll take the Miata GT and the Forester 5MT, Santa. :shades:
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Bob - even though you have the new car, you still have to choose! Plus that's not $50k anyway. At least pick a 2nd car to complete the $50k.

    Hi everyone

I've been really busy lately but have been trying to keep up.

Bob, sorry about Annie, I'm sure she'll be missed. I think I miss my dog more than some people!

Both my wife and my Mother had medical issues over the last 2 months so it's been kinda crazy. It's amazing how fast your life can be turned upside down! Anyway, thank God everything turned out well for both of them, my mother is recovering still from surgery to remove a benign brain tumor but is doing well- she did not lose her vision or mobility. It truly has been a thanksgiving for me!

Hope everyone stays healthy this winter!

Hey, as long as you're decreasing the amount, can we base the cost of the car including all of these rebates and dealer discounts? It only seems fair. ;)

Well then, I'm a bit torn here.

On one hand I want to be ecologically correct, and that would likely mean a Honda Fit Sport with a manual tranny.

On the other hand, I've always liked real off-roaders. So maybe a base level 4x4 Xterra with a 6-speed, or a similarly equipped Frontier? I would think you could get a good deal on either of those two these days.

Then again a new '09 Grand Vitara 3.2 4x4 sort of bridges the gap between those extremes.

    Decisions... Decisions...

    Tommy! Been a while.

This year, I'm going to be different. Instead of the usual Roush/Cobra Mustang, I'd go for a hemi-orange Dodge Challenger. Talk about retro-cool. Rob M.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Stop waffling around, you gotta pick. Santa's elves need some lead time.

    I'll help a bit.

$24,148 for an XTerra at Fitzmall, but it's auto, the only one they have in stock. So much for demand being low.

$21,938 to $24,517 for a Frontier, 7 in stock, but get this - all automatics!

No 2009 Grand Vitaras in stock yet, only 2008s with the 2.7l V6 (not nearly as entertaining).

Just one manual Fit Sport in stock at Brown's Honda, $16,730 plus $635 freight plus $349 processing, or $17,714. They go as high as $19-20k if you get a GPS and automatic.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Okay... Jeep Wrangler X or Sahara 2-door 6-speed. Fitz has them for $25K or less.

    Bob
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Hey Rob! How's beantown? Must be starting to get cold! I've seen a couple of those challengers around, definitely bright! But they look really heavy!

I think I'd like one of the new Camaros, but who knows if GM will still be in business!

I'd like an STi and a Miata- sport. Should barely squeeze in under $50k, heavily discounted. :)

We've passed the mid-point weigh-ins. Time to fess up!

180.5 on Friday morning. That's 5.5lbs but clearly already well behind. Oh well, guess I'll have to pull out the old high school wrestling weight cut regimen in the pre Xmas week if I want to compete or maybe just give up beer....
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Well, with a new WRX 265 in the garage I'd go purely sensible on this on. Highlander Hybrid Limited. It's over $50K in Canada but with the new exchange rate it still cuts under the limit. Haul the whole crew around with 4wd, great mileage, and it gets a lovely big back-up screen for Dra.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'm down 7 lbs as of Friday.

I was kind of hoping I'd done better, given my cholesterol was down.

Basketball practice for my daughter's team starts tomorrow so I hope that helps increase the activity level (I help coach them).
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,464
I'm still down 16 lbs., after a small hiccup last week. :surprise:

But, I might have started before you guys... From what date are we starting? My diet began on September 12th..

I will make a point to weigh myself tomorrow. Honestly, though, I have not really done anything to reduce my weight, so I expect I will still be at around 190.
