The county will have water pressure loss for 4 hours, and my kids' school even closes 2.5 hours early!

Hey Tom... we're coping just fine... sort of :) You guys have it worse with less snow, just because you're not supposed to get that much!

We got about 20 inches here at the house in the first load last week, another 6 or so Sunday/Monday, and forecasting another 6-8 for Christmas Eve/Day. Winds & drifts have been almost worse than the actual snowfall. As of right now, I have 1 driveway, room for all 3 cars to park off the road, the graders came by last night & re-buried my mailbox  , a broken snowblower  , and a sore back from spending too much time shoveling! The other driveway has been officially abandoned til the blower gets fixed.

But hey, it's Christmas! Maybe my Christmas present will be a repaired machine!

    Cheers!

Glad things are ok Paul- I guess you guys are used to getting more snow than we are!

As long as you're asking for things, maybe ask for a new back? :D

    Merry Christmas!

Rather ironic that the water line break happened on River Road.

We have 6" to 8" on the ground here in Boise and my wife has been commuting in the Outback. I had to run errands this morning and the minivan got out of the neighborhood ok, but it wouldn't make it back up my driveway.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Juice, did you get any pictures?

We had 2 days of below 0F temps, finally back in the 20F's today...but more snow.

Need to figure out what to do about the snow on the 2nd level roof of the new house, it is overhanging the gutter. I use to be able to rake that off on my old house which was a ranch.

No, it basically happened just west of the DC Beltway, and I take that exit (or the next) going east, in to town.

The TV and radio coverage went on for a while.

Fortunately my wife and I were working, plus the kids were in school, so we never even noticed the loss of water pressure during the day.

Doesn't everyone include pictures in their Christmas cards? :P

What we have here are some of the manual tranny lovers in my house, Kate, Charlie, & Colleen, though I have to confess that Charlie is having a bit of trouble with heel-toe since his heel to toe distance is rather small and every time I start to say, "heel..." he moves over next to me in the passenger seat.

nice looking family ... but I have one question ..

is Charlie adopted? ... it's a bit harder to see the family resemblance ...

Here's another photo of a manual tranny loving family. Both humans drive manuals and both dogs enjoy riding in a manual equipped car. Labs prefer manuals :-)

    Nice pictures folks :D .

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy/Merry Holiday Season!

Hope everyone got what they wanted!

(As for the diet weigh-in: Tuesday I was down 12 lbs; after last night I'm afraid to go near a scale ;) )

    Happy everything to everyone!

Hope everyone's having fun these holidays. I'm enjoying time with my family after the whole year full of stress, business travel and corporate layoffs. I still have a job but to tell the truth things do not look all that good here in Silicon Valley.

OTOH, I got 2 Foresters in the family, so life is not all too bad ;)

Glad to see so many familiar faces in our Crew here!

    Happy holidays, everyone.

we went to the husband's family for Christmas dinner ... his mother cooked a huge dinner .. not bad considering she "died" last January and recovered since then ... (her aorta burst before they got her on heart-lung machine, but she's had an amazing recovery) ...

nice day ... his sister and her family drove in from Texas (through some of the ice storms...)

we're home ...went in the subie - of course - although the ice was in our street and in his mother's driveway ... in between was fine .. lol

    G'day

Hope you all survived Christmas and storms. Just listening to the latest forecast for the US and Canada and it sounds cold.

Of course, you are all welcome to come over and leap in our pool. Currently sitting on about 30C (about 86F) air temperature and kids are complaining that the pool is not warm enough! I asked Judy if she would go back to England to avoid the heat - she thought one moment and concluded the ice and snow were not worth it when you have kids to shepherd to school. She does not drive and used to slip and skid down the pavements - yuk!

Thinking of you all at Christmas

    Cheers

    Hi everybody.
    Happy holidays to all.

I've been very busy steering through this awkward economy to keep my business alive. No great accomplishments but I'm still here.

Haven't caught up on the earlier posts yet but I wanted to take this time to wish everybody a happy and a healthy new year.

So Graham, what is your pool's temperature? Ours needs to be at least 27C (80F) before I think it's comfortable for lounging around in :)

    G'day

The pool is sitting between 25C and 30C. I think the kids would have been in today but we have been to a family Christmas celebration at my mother's place. She is 81 and still on seven acres of fairly high maintenance property, by herself. Fortunately, one very handy nephew is on university vacation so will do a variety of tasks for her.

The trip down and back was fairly wearing. Although only 70 miles on pretty good freeways, there seem to be more than the average number of nutters on the road.
One charmer careved me up badly leaving less than six inches clearance after avoidance and then repeated the same move several times. Short life expectancy, I would guess.

    Cheers

    Loved the reindeer antlers. :shades:

My brother just sent me pics of him and his kids playing in the pool - Brazil is just starting their summer season now. Of course it's never cold in the tropics, it just goes from "hot" to "hotter". :D

Happy Holidays from chilly, damp DC.

OK, Lucien was the first to report in, here:

    http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef0a957/13693

I believe I deserve the blame for the horrible idea of weighin in on January 1, but I'm at 211 today, which is 6 pounds less than I started. 6/217 = 2.8% weight loss.

I bottomed out at 206 IIRC, but the cold combined with holiday feasting brought me half way back. :(

At least my cholesterol was down, also.

How about everyone else? Here were the starting weights, from my last post (add yours if I missed you):

Weigh-in: AJ started at 217, Bob at 200, volkov at 186, xwesx at 192, lucien at 178, Mark at 198, Serge at 161. Frank at 204 lbs. paisan at 300#. pf_flyer at 247#. Brenda 165.9#. hypov 142 lbs playing in reverse! bigelm at 188 lbs. Charlie at 256 lbs.

    Get on those scales, folks.

Let's say you have to report back by the end of the day on Monday, past the holidays, so we can announce a winner on January 6. Is that enough time?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,502
I'm at 201, this morning... Maybe that 12oz. ribeye last night, with multiple margaritas was a bad idea? :surprise:

    Started at 218, so 17/218 = 7.8% loss..

It's been a disaster for me. I'm at 211.75 lb. as of this morning—and this after a 70-minute spinning class (stationary bike). Too much chomping on holiday sweets. :(

We had friends over for New Year's dinner last night, and it was actually my biggest meal and consumption of the season so I was worried about a set-back, but nothing significant.
Drum roll.........175 lbs on the scale first thing this AM.
That makes for 11lbs or 5.9%. Surely not near the winners, but I do really want to thank everyone, because just having this little challenge was a real motivation for me to get serious. I'm quite certain I would not have achieved anything without the community.

I'm at 158.4...at least I was till I just ate some leftover Chinese food, though I did leave the rice.
    Happy New Year, folks
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
I was at 170 at the height of my fair weather fitness, for a loss of 4.5%. But the end of the season, the end of daylight saving, the early onset of the winter, holiday calories, and the spike in Q4 workload had the expected impact- 5 pounds are back. So call it 2% as of now. If we re-convene in June/July, you'll find that I'll likely be back at 170. This is my 3rd year of serious cycling, and I'm learning to to live with this pattern.

I've been afraid to weigh in and see the numbers with all the holiday meals, but finally did it this morning. 187.5 for a loss of 10.5 lbs or 5.3%. At least this helped me to actually start loosing the wieght :) .

BTW - a Happy Belated New Year to one and all.

Very interesting article in the Melbourne Age this morning confirms that Subaru were the only car maker in the USA to see a sales increase in calendar year 2008, largely due to the Impreza and Forester. At least there is some good news!

Hi Everyone! Hope you all had a happy new year and congrats to those who lost weight! (or are the same weight after the holidays!)

I realize that after having a car with keyless entry for 2 years it's a lot more convenient than I initially gave it credit. It's nice to go up to my car and not fish in my pocket for a key, the car unlocks when I grab the handle and I get in and push a button and start it up. I guess that's why most luxury cars have it, but a lot of more inexpensive cars are getting it too. It's not a big deal but certainly a nice option to have.

Hopefully Subaru will benefit from a relationship with Toyota and offer it here in the next Legacy/Outback and other cars. (They have it Japan now, I believe)

I'm stuck at down 7 pounds... although considering Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's were stuck in there, that's a good start.

Not a Subie owner, but I think I qualify now that I'm the host of the Crew... :)

I was at the doc this week for some routine poking and prodding, and was astounded to find myself at 207. I want to get back to 165-170 where I was April 2005. My annual physical is in April each year, and I want to make real progress by this year's physical.

I have a new professional scale on the way - the dieting starts in earnest next week.

I dunno, I think perhaps I need to get a scale as well. Never had one, never wanted one. But, somehow, I think it may be useful to have one now.

AJ - sorry, still have not found that scale. I am going to just say that I had no change. If there was a change, it was insignificant (a pound or two, perhaps). At this point, getting on a scale is not necessarily going to reflect what I was on 1/1.

I think we should keep this going though. It is motivational enough for me that it has at least started me thinking about my weight.
