On Friday the 10th December I was able to handwash my car outside at the house, unbelieveable In Ottawa. If this is global warming bring it on. :shades:

    Cheers Pat.

I'm not much south of you Pat (quite a bit west though) and I have about half grass and half snow/ice showing in my yard. Guess it's all my fault for buying a ski pass, but hopefully we'll get some dumps later in the week. Shoot, I'm still driving the minivan more than the Outback.

Send some of that warm air this way, please. I've been freezing for weeks!

Really juice?? Come up here and stay awhile. It's not Alaska cold but it's chilly enough.

Here's some advice - see that thing on the wall in the living room? Flip the switch to heat and stop being so cheap!!

I'm a hot blooded Brazilian, we have thin skin!

I'm shivering just thinking about it! :D

PS I'm not cheap, I am "environmentally sensitive and responsible with a low carbon footprint". ;)

    You mean thin blood.

BTW - you've lived here in 'Merica for a long time. You must be used to it by now.

PS I'm not cheap, I am "environmentally sensitive and responsible with a low carbon footprint".

LOL. Last week I was speaking with a friend who takes the above too far. She actually has labels on all her light switches advising how many watts that switch will consume if turned on. I told her thank you for saving all those hydrocarbons because my new Explorer really needs all of them!!

Leather skin, thin blood, you're right. ;)

I got my wife a bit more energy conscious by having her pay the electrical bill for a couple of months. :shades:

Alaska cold? You know not of what you speak. The mercury hasn't dipped below zero for weeks! That said, it is forecast to do so tonight.

1,000 kwh = $210. Electricity and I have an antagonistic relationship.

    Hi Everybody,
We will be Subaru owners soon! Deep Indigo Pearl is on its way to us and expected around 12/27. Already excited about buying regular gas rather than super! Only one dealer was willing to look for the color and equipment we wanted. The other two said we would have to order, which would have taken 4-8 weeks. I am looking forward to the puddle lights -- my in-laws have them on their 2011 and they are very cool. We hope to be able to think about the wheels once we recover from car purchase and the holidays.

daughter (who lives with us with the grandsons) received an engagement ring from her b/f for Christmas ... they were just here to "show it off" ...

we like him .... he's a 'geek' like us .. lol
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Congrats to her! Not a bad start to the Holidays!
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
ok .. you guys already know I'm not a 'typical' mom (whatever that is) and when they were here ... 1st I admired the ring and we talked a few minutes about that ....

then I grabbed the Kindle Fire to show her b/f because he's had a kindle forever and had told me he wanted to see the fire when it came in ... we probably spent longer playing with the fire than I did admiring the ring.. (bad mom .. bad mom)

congrats! how very exciting for your family. :)

my wife's younger sister got engaged at thanksgiving. she'd been dating for over 5 years so it wasn't a total surprise, but I was tipped about it a few months ago because my (soon to be) brother-in-law asked me where I got my wife's diamond and such. I was proud that I managed to keep it totally secret!

Our sp ed agency was spending the last of the stimulus funds .... we met yesterday afternoon and all of the sp ed teachers/speech therapists got iPads to use for school ...

many teachers have been requesting them to use with some of our students .. rather than having them assigned to a specific student, the teachers have them so they can be used with many students ... YAY

Santa came early! Hubby must be intoxicated by new car smell because I have heard not once but 3 times today how right I was about this car (you know it would save so much time and bother for all involved if you guys would just say "Yes Dear" a little more often :) ) and how beautiful it is. The deep indigo pearl color is awesome. Now that it is in our garage, he says the wheels are fine!!!

    Questions for the crew:
We were offered the Gold Plus extended warranty for $1295 for our choice of either 5/100K or 6/100K by the finance guy. There was no mention of a deductible (I read the Gold Plus forum). Is this a good price? Was also told we could work it into the monthly payment for $24/mo (there will be 60 of those at 1.9). There was no pressure but finance guy seemed insistent that Subaru wanted us to have it, what a bargain it was for all it covered, they could offer this price only at delivery, etc. We told him we would be back next week to have the puddle lights and the rear bumper guard installed (unfortunately backordered) and was told the offer would be good til then.

If we do get the 18 in wheels at some point, would we need to upsize the spare donut?

I can't really say much about the car because we did not have much time to drive or play. We were at the dealer much longer than expected (3 hours!) while they put the wheel arch molding on and washed and waxed away all the sticky stuff from the wrap. Then it was on to holiday errands while kids were still in their usual daytime arrangments. Seems there will be a lot to learn with the radio and nav.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,764
Congrats! While I don't like the appearance of the Outback in general, that is a nice color.

For the warranty, that sounds like a good price for either of those points (5/100 or 6/100), but I would request a zero deductible. Even so, they wouldn't be bad prices with a $50 deductible. I think you said your husband has a fairly long commute, so the 5/100 might work out best to maximize your value (time vs. distance). I would definitely request zero on the deductible for that one.

That said, you can get the warranty at other places for a similar price later on if your dealer bails. You won't be able to roll it into the financing, though!

There is advantage to the Gold during regular warranty, and that is road hazard assistance (there might be other advantages) that is not part of the standard warranty. Of course, I just picked up my extended warranty, with my car at 35,899 miles, so missed out on any added benefits during that period. Oh well; I didn't pay a penny for it - I used Subaru Bucks (and still have $800 in the file), but I still would have liked the extra coverage - it would have saved me some real cash, too.

You don't need to mess with the spare tire, since you'll want to size-match the 18" tires to the stock size. Basically, the rim size will grow an inch, but the sidewalls on the tires will shrink. If you want some info on tire sizes if you consider that route, just ask here or check sizes on Tire Rack - they have good info, too.

While there are a lot of folks who would suggest that an extended warranty is not really needed,my advice would be to go for the 6/100. Think of it as the same as car insurance, you may never need it, but it is sure as hell nice to have when you do. There is also the advantage of a loaner should the need arise for an extended warranty repair.

Remember also when you go to a plus one or plus two tire and rim change there is reduction in the sidewall size of the tire, this can contribute to a harsher ride. The manufacturer has arrived at the optimum ride quality with the stock size, and if you do go a larger rim and tire there will be no need to change the six of the spare.

    Cheers Pat.

We went to husband's parents' house on Xmas eve - visited with parents and his sister's family who had come from Texas. Had to laugh at my "toy" bag I took with me ... both Kindle AND Kindle Fire, netbook, and the new Ipad to play around with some. (No wireless in this house - only an ANCIENT desktop PC and a slow, slow, slow internet connection.)

During the course of the day I read from the Kindle, played a couple of (non-online) games on the Fire, in between helping in the kitchen, etc.

Later in the day, sister-in-law and I realized we were both fiends for Words with Friends ... but no wireless connection ... hmmmm ....

She called her younger son in and asked for his phone. We logged on through his "MIFI" connection with Verizon and sat at the table playing Words with Friends ... when it seemed to 'lag', I said .. well just think where all this might be ROUTING through to get back to the other device even though we're sitting with them inches apart!

You have to laugh at the lengths that geeks will go to to have their form of entertainment!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Congrats, first off!

We have a Gold 7/100 no deductible, too. You get roadside assistance and piece (peace?) of mind for the duration.

Wifey's car has a noisy sway bar bushing, and what would normally be a wear and tear item the dealer replaced for free since we were Gold customers. YMMV but no regrets. I also have Subaru Bucks, and it cost me nothing out of pocket.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    We're in the same boat...

I got a Playbook from work early this year to test in a pilot program. We did not buy more, but I still have it.

Then I got an iPad, also for testing.

Then the wife got one of the smaller Kindle readers as a gift from a client at work. It's ultra-light but just a reader, really.

From 0 to 3 tablets in 2011, wow! Cost: $0!
  • pugjoypugjoy Member Posts: 14
How many Subaru bucks was that? Was reading in another forum that Don at Mastria Subaru is the one to talk to -- will give him a call tomorrow and see what he has to say.

I think it was about 10 of the $100 certificates. Not sure of the exact amount because we had some service done and also paid for that.

YMMV, and I was told turbos cost more.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,764
I worked with Mastria. The 7/100 Gold (zero deductible) was $1495 for my 2010 Forester. I don't know if the price varies by model year, etc. You can likely get the same warranty for less elsewhere, but he was great to work with.

The 1st REAL snow of the year is underway ... so far about 8 inches at our house and it's not done til sometime tomorrow ... husband went back to work after a long break and he drove MY car ... it does do better in snow than his ...

we had an 'adventure' last Friday ... he had bought some car washes on Groupon that included windows and carpet vacuuming and had to use them by year's end ... we took my car in for cleaning on Friday ...

we get through the wash and pull into the bay for the vacuuming and window cleaning .. as we prepare to get back in the car, the kid says, "Did you know you have a flat tire on the left rear?" I go around to look and it is COMPLETELY FLAT. Well .. it WASN'T flat before we went into the car wash ... they get the compressor to air it up, and there's a HOLE in the tire ... (not that they are 'new' by any means, but STILL!) ... so husband prepares to jack up the car and put the spare on .. they say .. let us air it up and you can drive the few yards to the lube bay where it will be easier to get the spare on .. so we do that ..

well .. husband drives it to the bay because i'm just ... um ... let's say I was less than happy and trying really hard to keep my mouth shut and let him handle it ... as they are jacking the car and getting tire off, I realize that husband has left the driver's side door ajar and I figure it should be closed ... I point it out, and he goes and shuts it ... by now they have the tire off, and it's obvious that there had been a nail in the tire which is now gone .. guess it got caught somewhere in the car wash and pulled out ...

a minute or two later, they go to get the spare out and the back is locked ... I go to the driver's side to hit the release and .. um ... the car is locked and the keys are in the ignition ... (ARRRRRGGGGHHHH) ... I NEVER get out of the car and leave the keys in it, but he is used to doing it all the time since he has a keypad on his door ... I don't carry a spare key and he NEVER carries one for my car. I search my purse to be sure and find HIS car key but not mine ...

he calls his son who is home from college (but at mom's house) and catches him nearby ... asks him to go to our house and tells him where to find the key and bring it to us ... (all the time, I'm thinking it would be a lot faster for him to come to get one of us and go to the house to get the key, but ... ok ....) ... a few minutes later we get another call because the kid does NOT listen when you tell him where something is so of course he's looking in the wrong places .... we finally get the key, get the spare on, and on to the tire place ....

he bought the tires several years ago at Discount Tire, and he replaced one of the tires a couple months ago when he took the car in ... I had one repaired a month ago .. we knew it needed new tires, but we'd .. see ... there was a big crowd because it was 'after work' hours by this time. We made an appointment to drop the car off the next morning to get 3 new tires, went to the grocery store, and went home ...

new morning we drop off the car and go to do some errands .. when we go back to pick up the car .. it seems that one of the lug nuts 'broke' off when they were changing the tire because it had been 'put on backward' .. I asked which tire .. "left front" ... well ... hmm ... Discount Tire repaired that tire a MONTH AGO so I guess one of their workers is the one to blame ... he looks it up in the records and says, "hard to argue with this one" and prints out a purchase order for me to take to a local repair shop to get it fixed ...

the repair shop was closed on Saturday, so one day this week I'll take it in to get that done ...

Thus concludes the story of my "free car wash" ....

Don't know how to respond to all of that other than to say we got ~6" and it sure is fun. :shades:

Hoping for more but mostly we just have wind rearranging it.

first of all, I don't know how you could install any wheel backwards, but especially on a subaru. it is not possible even on a steel rim because of the offset alone. I do mean inside-out. merely installing a directional tire the wrong way is pretty easy, but that doesn't break a lugnut.

I would bet a large sum of money they put the impact gun on there while tightening it, or with the gun set to tighten instead of loosen. they overtightened it and broke the stud.

which brings me to my 3rd point. they almost certainly broke the stud, not lugnut. if you drive it much with a busted stud, you will overstress the others and break more in short order... so I hope this is getting repaired very soon!
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
yeah .. stud - not lug nut ... I'll probably be at the garage tomorrow to get it taken care of ... and it wasn't the tire that was 'backward' .. they claimed the stud was put on backward ... at any rate, they admitted THEY were the ones to blame!

We saw snow flakes yesterday, but not even enough to create a dusting. I'm getting the feeling we'll get a lot this year, though. :shades:
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Beth and I have been promising ourselves a new flat panel for some time now, and agreed last year not to exchange gifts in favor of a new TV. Well, it never happened, in part because a larger TV would require some room 'rearrangements & upgrades' to accommodate it. See what's coming?? $$$

We were to host the family this year, so suddenly there was a big push to get it all done. Two rooms worth - Living & Family rooms. Carpet, painting, new crown & base moldings, some furniture, TV & Blu-ray player, etc. After 2 weeks of crazy late nights (including one all-nighter), it got done, and we had a house-full from 12/21 thru New Years.

I got a great new saw (Dewalt sliding mitre) out of it, along with 55 inches of glorious high def. Thoroughly exhausted, I returned to work today (to rest).....
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,764
Oooh, a new saw! See, that's why I don't have a flat screen television yet... it just cannot make its way high enough on the priority list! :shades:

I know what you mean about resting by going to work! I spent my break building some furniture for the children's room (still not finished) and pulling the transmission out of my plow truck over the course of several days (-20 temps and about 3.5 hours of daylight work against automotive productivity). Happily, I at least did accomplish the latter project.

All told, I think I would have rather done your project!

    Funny story...

Reminds me of my $15,000 table.

We buy a nice table for the deck, but...

It's too big for the old deck. So we tear down the deck, and put up a new, bigger one, with Trex decking. It's beautiful, but...

It makes the siding look old, so we have the house painted.

    A few more touch-ups and $15,000, it's a very expensive table! :D

well after the fiasco of the 1st semester, we just sat most of the last week ... worked through 12/23 and off til 1/9 (and I LIKE the days more after Christmas than before)

Husband was off so it was nice to just spend time together (which our schedules just don't allow too much of). Daughter is gradually moving things out of the house. I am 'itching' to have the rooms back so I can deep clean, paint, etc. and use them for other purposes.

Starting today my work projects begin before *I* go back to work next week. So far today, I have cleaned out, rearranged, etc. all of the kitchen cabinets and pantry. Shoveled a path on the deck and deck steps so the dog isn't dragging in the snow every time she goes in and out of the house. More closet cleaning and cabinet cleaning yet to go ... as I'm moving through, I'm also finding more things that belong to the daughter stored in various areas and moving those to 'her' pile ... (yes .. I'm READY)

I called Don at Mastria and he happily gave me all the facts and figures on the Gold Plus. 6/100 is $1234/1320/1490 for the $100/50/0 deductible. 7/100 is $1370/1470/1590. These are six cylinder prices, 4 cyl. runs about $90 less. He was very straighforward, explained that it is tranferable to next owner and partially refundable if we cancel at some point, and asked if I had any other questions. Also suggested the 10 month payment option is a great way to go, which he said has no interest charges or extra fees (there's probably room in there somewhere) which gets billed by Subaru of America.

Yesterday, Hubby spends a good chunk of time at the dealership having the puddle lights installed. He swings by the finance guy to ask him about what exactly we would be getting for the $1295 price he quoted (which he first said was only available on date of delivery when we picked up the car). He barely registers interest and when my husband pressed him as to whether there were any conditions on that, he said yeah, that's with a $100 deductible, but we talked about that (so now we know you are a liar in addition to a weasel). So DH asks him about the 10 payment plan, and his answer was "we don't do that here." Too much work, creates problems, etc. WHAT????

Fresh off some bizarre holiday return experiences -- with receipts I might add -- here comes my mini-rant -- when are some retailers/service providers going to wake up to the fact that people have choices and good information is only a few clicks or a phone call away? I came, I read, I called, I got info, I made a decision. Would have been happy to pay the extra $61 our dealership wanted, if finance guy had not been a weasel and a liar and decided the 10 payment plan was too much trouble for him. So we will spend our money with the guy who was pleasant and straighforward that we know only from a phone call. Stepping off my soap box now.

In other news, Hubby seems happier by the day with his new car (didn't think that could possibly happen because he was giddy by day 2) and now believes the wheels are great as is. Since we are now contemplating the warranty AND we just found out that our car seats have "expired" according to their date of manufacture, this is a very welcome development!
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Your experience is unfortunately so very common at dealerships today. I've purchased my last 3 manufacturers extended warranties (Subaru, Honda, Toyota) over the internet/phone due to the inability to get any reasonable response from my selling dealership. Sad, really.

As an example, I recently bought a Toyota Sienna, and at the time took the dealerships offer of a 7/100 plan. I came in armed with the prices, and their offer was pretty reasonable. Still, I jumped too quickly, as my wife pointed out that with our 'new' driving habits, the 8/125 for a little bit more made far more sense. The selling dealer dissed us (a request to change within 24 hrs of the transaction), and told me to take my money and go away! Not worth his time to refile the papers! So I cancelled his plan and went elsewhere. Crazy, eh?

Glad to hear he is happy with the new car & OE wheels.

Get a Chase Subaru credit card, then earn Subaru Bucks and get that Subaru Gold warranty for free, like I did.

Limit is $500/year, but you have until the end of the 3/36 warranty so start spending. LOL :D

Not just car dealerships Steve. Unfortunately service sucks in just about any area you care to mention.
It doesn't matter whether it is a car dealership, a clothing store, a hardware store ETC. the service personel think they are doing you a huge favour by serving you. They forget that their jobs are dependent on the consumer.

    Cheers Pat.

and remember .. in so many places, the people who DEAL with the customers are being paid minimum wage or barely better ... not a lot of incentive in that case ...
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
I am well aware of that Brenda. It is still not a reason to give surly service. In the present depressed economic situation having a job beats having no job.
While a minimum wage job is hardly the ideal ask any person who has been unemployed for a long time which option they would choose.
Any job is better for a persons self esteem than no job.

    Cheers Pat.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
I agree with you fullheartedly ... I'm happy people are taking the jobs .... and I would like good customer service wherever I go ... but I just think that workers who have a better wages/benefits package are generally more 'invested' in the company where they work and have more incentive to provide that service ....
