I thought leaving that out was a mistake. It still needs more power, though.

    Mark, you're welcome.

Drew, thanks. I hope Subaru isn't disappointed when OnStar customers don't renew after the first year.
I notice GM doesn't publish subscription renewal rates (1st year is "free", so renewals are the gauge of success).

The following is formatted Edmunds style (avoid 115 char limit):

bit, thanks. Edmunds doesn't list 2002 GT

    www.edmunds.com/new/2002/subaru/legacy/gtawd4drwagon25l4cyl5m/

^- concatenate above with below -v

    standard.html?id=lin0014

    nor 2002 GT Limited

    www.edmunds.com/new/2002/subaru/legacy/

^- concatenate above with below -v

    gtlimitedawd4drsedan25l4cyl5m/

^- concatenate above with below -v

    standard.html?id=lin0014#comparetrims

with the all weather package. Joe Spitz lists AWP on GT as not available (na), not standard (S) in the chart

    www.cars101.com/subaru_new.html#snapshot

but not on the Legacy page

    www.cars101.com/legacy.html

I think cars.com has it correct:

    www.cars.com/carsapp/national/?srv=parser&act=display&mknm=

^- concatenate above with below -v

    Subaru&tf=/features/

    2002overview/subaru/subaru.tmpl#legacy

A standard all-weather package on the GT Limited sedan includes heated front seats, heated mirrors and a wiper deicer. Sedans gain an internal trunk release with a self-illuminating handle.

I agree with "Blitzen" Brian and Ed:

    Scotty, we need more power!

    ..Mike

PS - Sorry for the formatting but, um, Edmunds software could use some improvements.

I'm very disappointed with the inability to enter URLs in HTML or some other code. I tried using <BR> to no avail.

Drew, what's the trick again? I'll save the info.

Mike - I don't understand your comment above. I never have problems with the formatting and can include a URL. What am I missing?

    bit
  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
bit, Sorry I wasn't clear. URLs are limited to 115 characters (actually less due to a bug in this forum's software). To test, copy the HTML from the next two posts (test 1 and test 2) into a single post, delete the space immediately before and after < and > , then try to post.

    You get this error (IE 5.5 SP2, Win2K SP2):

You cannot post any words longer than 115 characters.

It may be related to the spaces around the < and > .

    change: HREF="www.edmunds.com

Drew: I thought the Subaru chats were available to view afterwards. I went to see what else was talked about last night (sorry for bailing early), but I don't see last nights chat there.

miksmi: I too have had that problem of posting long URLs. Sometimes I have been able to shorten the offending URL, but you can't always do that. I think most URLs one may post are shorter than 115 chars, so 90% of the time it's not a problem. Still I wonder why it's 115 chars and not 100 or 200 or ?.

Gotcha. I have run across that one before.

For normal folks, that's true. No one ever accused me of being normal. :D

It's a bummer because I was trying to link to a section of Edmunds. So much for being a URL hound.

To change subjects, I came across a post that refered to an audio/video component made of "unobtanium". I think the Subaru roof visors/vent shades are made of unobtanium.

The chat has to be transcribed before it is entered into the read-only topic here in Subaru Crew. It takes awhile.

And Mike, as you can see from my "testing..." post, I've gotten by that frustrating character limit by simply clicking on spellcheck first and then posting. If you need to correct what the spellcheck mangles, click on edit...but don't take too long! That edit window is only 30 minutes long.

...if you DO edit, don't hit "post"...click on spellcheck again and THEN post.

Jeez...the hoops you have to jump around here are unbelievable! :-)

Any chance of getting the forum hosting company to fix this limit? I realize this limit exists because long URLs adversely affect formatting. If the URL is embedded in an HTML tag, it won't affect formatting. In fact, I use HTML to avoid adversely affecting the format. I'm not asking to remove the URL width limit, just fix it so URLs embedded in HTML aren't limited.

Thanks for the info, $2 a sq foot is cheaper than carpet and much cheaper than I though. People around me were estimating 4-5K. Knowing now what I didn't know then I would have gladly paid $2K to avoid that. It took us about 75 man hours just to do the sanding alone (ugg). The part that drove me crazy was in between each coat of Polyurethane you had to "lightly sand" every square inch. Do you know how long it takes to "lightly sand" 900 sq ft with a 1/4 sheet hand sander? Three times? Then it had to be wiped, swept and vaccumed. Ahhh!!!

The only consolation is that its an old house (50's) so those chunks the sander took out of the floor give it "Character" (make sure the sander is in the OFF position before plugging it in). It still looks great and has enough polyurethane on it to stop bullets. I'm still not quite sure what they meant by a "thin coat". How thick is your finished product.
  • originalbitmanoriginalbitman Member Posts: 920
When we did the floors in our last house (and the last time I will do it myself) I once forgot to turn the sander off when I blew one of many fuses. Out in the garage as I replaced the fuse I could here this strange intermittent grinding noise coming from within the living room. It took a few seconds to realized it was the sander making a trip across the room at full speed with the sanding drum bouncing on and off the floor as it traveled leaving these nifty divits in the floor every 4 feet or so.

I got a deal 7 years ago in our current home for $2/ft on 2k sq ft. Still look great today but will soon need a scuffing and recoat in the high traffic areas.

Let's see and to keep this on topic I think its about time to do a little clay work on my GT and a recoat of carnuba.

Hi gang - missed both the weekly chats due to the floor refinish job and moving back into the house. Lots of little errands this weekend have the Forester at 26K miles which means that the big 30K service will come up by mid-to-late October. So a couple of questions related to that:

    1. Best price in eastern PA/west central NJ for the service? Coleman in Ewing (Trenton), NJ quoted me $517 for the service for an AWD car with AT.

    2. Use of synthetics: I've tried to stay out of that debate and have even posted here that I was going to stick with the dinosaur stuff. With all the glowing recommendations and claims of increased fuel economy, smoother operation and longer drivetrain life, however, I'm beginning to rethink my position and possibly recant and go the synthetic route. With this many miles on the car, is it too late? Will I have to drain and flush everything multiple times to get everything over to synthetic? Will dealers accommodate this? (Yes, Patti, I know SoA's official position on synthetics. ;-) ) Most importantly, will the switch affect the seals in the drivetrain components? I already have one very leaky car that has being 38 years old as its excuse; I don't want another.

    Thanks,
    Ed

I think the jury is still out on it. We have been told that it should be "okay" if you keep within the recognized mileage recommendations, but that can get expensive.

In my personal experience, I just saw my first case/situation where I am concerned. A gent. using synthetics had an engine problem (he had an Added Security agreement for 100K). He had about 90K on the odometer. He appears to have maintained the car at 7500 intervals. When the engine was torn down, the bearings were really worn. I'm trying to find out what weight he was using. We did cover the claim, but the only other time I've seen this was on vehicles that were not maintained properly.

I'm sure some of our synthetic users on this board will have more information on their experiences that may contradict this information, but I was concerned.

I'll post more info. if I get it.

I just switched my XT6 to Mobil 1. Started it at about 77K miles and have 80K now. Too early to tell if it makes a difference.

    Well the Kumho Tires rocked!

The XT6 came in 3rd place behind a couple driving a WRX Wagon 5-MT with Kumho slicks on it.

Beat 2 WRXs and a # of other cars in the class :) And this is running G-stock.

    Nice driving, paisano!

Back from the beach, and it was great! We took the nanny with us so it could be a real vacation, and had an absolute blast! We stayed waterfront in Assawoman Bay (really, no kidding), so the sunsets were gorgeous.

We got 7 days of sun, hard to believe. Hit the beach every day, the boardwalk, took the kid to Jolly Rogers, you name it. Wife and I rented a Kawasaki 3 seat Wave Runner on a windy, wavy day and boy was that a blast. Saw a couple of new movies (Drew would love that stretch S class in Rush Hour 2) also, and don't forget the Maryland Blue Crab feast!

Sandy took it all in stride. Despite our abuse, she's running like a champ, bikes in tow on the hitch and gear on top in the soft roof top carrier, plus four of us. She just passed her 3rd birthday (I owe her a nice present) and will hit 40k miles any day now.

Wow, so time to wind down a bit. What did I miss? A few more Ford horror stories, and a Guiness World Record?

I can beat 2:11:18 sideways, easy. A few years back I flew to Albuquerque and drove to Taos in a snow storm. The rental was a Mercury Tracer, and I was sliding left and right for 4 hours straight! AH-HA! Call Guiness!

Oh, wait, you have to stay within the lane? Guess I'm disqualified.

I will say that my Ford Escort GT wasn't nearly as bad (still no Subaru) in the snow, perhaps it's the tires or suspension tuning?

Funny and true story. My wife's brother and sister-in-law are car shopping because her T-Bird has had it and the 1995 Taurus they bought used keeps breaking (A/C first, now the tranny, in just two months). They are expecting their first child, so I recommended a wagon, specifically a used Subaru Legacy in their price range.

She said, "I don't like Subarus". I felt like saying "then keep fixing your Fords" but I didn't have the heart to upset a pregnant woman.

I never argue with a pregnant woman. If you're wrong, you're wrong. If you're right, you're a jerk.

I have to catch up in all the other topics - 100+ posts in some.

I was so lucky - despite a completely sunny week, the day after we came back it rained to rinse all that sand/salt off Sandy.

But no, I didn't really get her on much more than parking lot sand. Bummer.

The software is not smart enough (right now) to tell between an embedded HTML tag since it simply looks at the entire string and decides if it's long enough. There are a couple of ways of getting around it ;-).

what happened to the "return to Subaru Crew" link at the end of the page? That was nice because it refreshed the subscription, or at least the # of new posts. Now I hafta use the back button.... :(

Is a material that only factory race teams have access to. It is either hyper-light, hyper-strong, hyper-expensive, or all of the above.

I think gas companies must use it in their premium fuels. That would explain the price.

The main bearings were showing a lot of wear. I just found out that he was using Havoline Synthetic - 5/30 - changing it every 4K. Verrrryyyy strange to see wear like this one!

Pretty weird alright, the EJ series have a very reliable lower end because the crankshaft is superbly supported between the case halves. (Former hotrodders: yep, no mainbearing caps.)

Anyway that's really odd. I bet FHI will want to see that engine... What kind of filter was used and was it changed every time as well? How about air filter?

Maybe the 5w was too thin? If it's really hot out.

    -juice
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
uh, 5w30 is definitely an approved weight. I happen to use 10w30 myself, but there's not a drastic difference between the hot temperature performance of the two.

    -Colin
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Approved, yes, but meant for cooler temps, right?

    -juice
  • originalbitmanoriginalbitman Member Posts: 920
5w30 is what SOA puts in at the factory and what the manual says is "preferred". Temp range from off the scale below -20 to over 100. 10w30 is 0 to off the scale over 100. That's according to the manual.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587

that my next car will be one that can compete in club rally events. From what I've been reading, they say you should get a car that is already setup, rather than build up a car, so I'll just have to save my penny's for a real rally car :) Saw a nice '88 RX rally car, and some eclipses. Not for a few years though.
