First off it’s too freaking hot this early in the season in Louisville. 75F on my Sat morning long run isn’t usually a thing until well into June.
As for car dealers, I have two questions… how would anyone test drive a vehicle? And would all pre owned transactions fall into the realm of Carmax/Carvana/others that exclusively sell used cars, with CPO from manufacturers a thing of the past?

The way I could see it working is the dealer gets the new car from the manufacturer, preps and delivers it. In exchange for that service would be a flat fee from the manufacturer (built into the price of the car). The dealer could operate their used car sales and/or service department as needed. Tons of jobs lost on the dealer end, but the manufacturers would need a whole crew from customer service to finance specialists and titling personnel.
Lots of holes in my idea, but IMO the general principal is close

You would schedule a test drive and the vehicle(or one similar) would be brought from a hub local so you could drive it.
I personally wasn't interested in that.
I wonder what the percentage of people buying still base their decision off of the test drive.

So, today I added WAZE to my phone, and it works so much better. It is easier to use, picks up my instructions easily, the directions are more sensible, nicer more friendly voice, also will warn of accidents, police cars, slow downs...I think it gives alternatives.
I read a letter to an auto column in the newspaper saying that to get an update for his 6 year old car was very expensive, and these days after a certain time they won't even update the GPS....I think WAZE is always up to date. The TV and radio stations are using it now too.
They should just build in a WAZE screen right on the instrument panel...forget about a factory GPS.

Your cars don’t have Apple Car Pay/Android Auto? WAZE should play on the screen through that.

Been a long time since I test drove. I guess the Escape counts. Before that.. hmmm… I’d have to check the records. Maybe the Ioniq?

I don’t remember you even having an Ioniq.

They aren’t doing themselves any favors. If they don’t stop it will be a short term gain but long term loss. I am standing on the hill saying once they are able to the manufacturers will be pumping out inventory as fast as they can.
All it is going to take is one manufacturer to stick it to the dealers and start direct sales and all will follow suit.
What I would love to see is manufacturers looking at the inflated prices that the cars are selling for and telling the dealerships that they made an error on the price since the dealerships are getting so much more for them and now they will start charging the dealership more.

Well, I have a spreadsheet of vehicles and can remember which I test drove when I look at the list.
So Jan 2020 test drive of the Ioniq.
After that, Nov 2020 test drove the Fiat (well, she did).
And I forgot that she did test drive an S90 before we bought one.
Those bought/leased with no test drive:
WRX
MACH-e
Wrangler 4xe
Camaro
TRX
Coronet
ML63
Gloria
Sprinter (if it ever arrives)
The list would be longer if I included those where I drove a different example than what I/we bought.

One weird thing: It pronounces Dayton as Day - a -ton.
I have Carplay in the GTI, but you have to be plugged in with a USB. My son bought me the Cup Phone holder from Weathertech, which works great. GTI has a touch screen, or I can use Siri for commands. Very easy.

You should hear some of the pronunciations you will get in some parts of the upper midwest where you get a lot of places with French names. Names like Charlevoix gets butchered.

I was using Waze and guess how it pronounced “Fuquay road”
I’m not a very good guesser so just tell me. To keep your membership in good standing be sure to say that is Waze talking and not you.

Their advertising, their marketing materials, even the slogans they used, all pointed to the fact that they ALWAYS put their customers first. That they were great to deal with. That their whole reason for existing was to earn my business and offer the best car buying experience I ever had. That they wanted me to be a customer for life…..etc, etc, etc!
Obviously, none of that was true. They practiced “bait and switch” (advertising one price, and charging another…much higher price). They added frivolous and useless options that HAD TO BE added to the purchase price. One Bronco I looked at, brand new, in their showroom, had the top of the dash warping already. It was actually wavy with the speaker grills littlerally unable to fit in the cut of the top of the dash. They wanted $3K over MSRP for that piece of “work”. I laughed at their gall.
Flirted with a Chevy Bolt purchase. Again, Chevy dealer and ADM on it. It was a 2022. It needed a new battery, but was not going to replace it until they sold it. Think about that…a defective car that may catch on fire, that Chevrolet said needed to have a battery replacement, charging well over MSRP.
They are being short sighted. The dealerships that are the worst offenders, are doing their darnedest to be sleazy and NOT forging long term relationships.
There’s change happening in the way we buy cars. Manufacturers will figure out how to use only good dealerships to offer test drives. You’ll order your car from them. The rest? Well, the manufacturers now know who the sleazy ones are.
Carvana (as soon as they get their financials straight), CarMAx, etc will be used car outlets. The rest? I think the neighborhood used car dealers will flourish in this environment.
When the road T’d into Fuquay, I asked my wife what in the Fuquay I needed to turn. 😂🤣
