Having a handicapped license plate plus the placard, amazing how so many folks just park in one of the spaces while waiting for someone to come out of the store. Did honk at one person who wasn't happy about having to move, and told me so as I walked past her using my cane. Forgot what I answered but she didn't look happy at all. But does piss me off when healthy folks insist on using them. Trust me, I'd rather not have to deal with this chronic pain I'm stuck with, but it's just part of my life and just try to deal with it.
Petrol down south here is getting closer to going under $3.00 for a gallon of regular very soon. BJ's & Costco have the cheapest prices and jut re-upped BJ's for another year as I got a pop-up on my phone for a $25/year special, so I grabbed it. It's mainly for their petrol prices as we have a location right near work & the house. Not going out of the way to use their pumps like I did with Cumberland Farms. I'm not one to waste any just to get a lower price if it can be helped. There are a few products we do get at BJ's & split with one of the kids, so was worth re-upping for another year.

Were to leave for SF tomorrow. Then Maui on Saturday for a week. Wife tested positive for Covid (PCR Test) after a few days of a heavy cold. Aloha, Hawaii.

Now I know why pickup trucks are so popular in Florida. It is because having a big heavy pickup truck made of strong steel with a frame could save the driver from more serious injuries.

Yesterday we were on a busy highway, 50 mph but everyone drives 55 to 60 of course. The highway has 6 lanes, 3 each direction. I was headed north, I was stopped at a very long red light, there were at least 20 cars in each of the 3 lanes waiting. The sidewalks are fairly wide here, made for golf carts. Guess what was driving down the sidewalk at about 60 mph....an older model white pickup truck. Then a black one went by going about 60 as well, with 2 wheels on the edge of the road and 2 on the grass.....a little better than the sidewalk but still.............. :#

I was out and about last night, passed by a Sam's Club, their gas station had RUG for $2.49. That's quite a bit lower than anything else I have seen around here. A definite sign that gas prices are falling.

Come over to Ohio, PUG is under $3 in Youngstown.

If it drops much lower in Ohio it could be worth making the trip.

Of course PA has one of the highest if not the highest gas tax in the country. You’d think we’d have some of the best roads because of that tax but that’s not the case. If I had to bet I’d say our roads are some of the worst in the country. So, what’s going on here? And I don’t want to hear it’s the freeze/thaw climate. That excuse is getting old.

The freeze/thaw cycles certainly have much to do with it. Also, the fact PA has, if I remember correctly, the 4th highest mileage of state-owned roads in the country.

With all the years of collecting high gasoline taxes though, a person would think those problems would have been solved; or at least brought under some kind of control.

I think its incompetence, ignorance, and just not caring.

Still, if you don't pay them all, and your neighbor doesn't pay them all, and 5 million other Pennsylvanians don't pay them all, that's a lot of money that could be used to fix the roads.

I like the pearl paint the best to be honest, it just looks so rich in color especially when clean. Unfortunately, my VW isn't pearlized but have been happy with it. It's blue on the exterior & ivory on the interior. Thought I'd have trouble keeping the inside clean but after almost 8 years of ownership, next week, looks pretty good. Prefer the lighter interior as I don't sweat in one. The A3 we also have is white over black and the back of my shirt is usually wet after spending some time inside it. We almost bought a black over black A3 but the closer dealer that had our current vehicle called while we were making a deal on a black over black unit at a farther away dealer. They finally agreed to my wife's offer, so we went back later that day and made the deal. Even though it was around December 1st, they gave her a deal a little under invoice so she was happy. Since it was so early in the model year, they had only black & white vehicles to choose from and what we ended up getting was her first choice.
On my next vehicle, not sure I'd do a blue exterior but will want a lighter shade for the interior. If it was to be the Bolt, it'll be either the light blue or the dark red. Haven't checked out the Kona colors yet & not sure if they have any EV's in our area. If the Corolla Cross, the Windchill pearl over the black & white interior is the only one I like well enough to pull the trigger. Did drive a regular Corolla the other day at work for about an hour and was pleasantly surprised at how well the 2.0 engine accelerated as there's no turbo which I'm used to. And going with the Corolla would mean synthetic oil changes wouldn't be necessary anymore. A slight savings there, part of where the "cheap to keep" factors in.

    2.0L uses 0w-16 synthetic.

A lot of the money used for PA roads comes from state gasoline taxes. So paying state income taxes doesn’t do very much, if anything, for the roads.

I’ll admit the federal government kicks in some but I’ll let all of the US citizens who feel guilty about not paying all of what they owe carry me through for a few more years.

given how many miles he drives that car, might only have to plug it in once a month too.

There are already states that have higher annual registration charges for EVs and PHEVs, to make up for the loss of gas taxes.

From what I can tell on the BMW website, Ohio charges $100 if you have a hybrid and $200 per year for a full EV. Considering what each is saving in operation costs of not buying gasoline and paying road tax to support the infrastructure, that seems a bargain.

Still, if you don't pay them all, and your neighbor doesn't pay them all, and 5 million other Pennsylvanians don't pay them all, that's a lot of money that could be used to fix the roads.

You don't get to complain if you shortchange the gov't what they're due.

    Choices have consequences.

That sounds good but they’d only waste that too.

Gee, you should trade in the Genesis for an EV and avoid paying any gas taxes at all. That seems consistent with your schemes.
Not sure about your state but here in IL the soak you with license plate fees for EV plates which you have to have.

I don’t know what you mean when you say “schemes “. I didn’t say anything about trying to avoid paying gas tax. However, if I could find a way to do that I would. Those pumps don’t operate on the honor system like governments do with their tax forms. :'(

money to maintain roads (which is not cheap) has to come from someplace. At least until recently, gas taxes roughly made it pay as you go. Could just scrap those and implement a full sales tax, or up the income tax, and make everyone pay even if you don't drive.

Since I started driving across PA on I-84 and I-80 in the late 200x's, the highways have improved quite a bit.
There are still areas being worked on but overall it's a much better experience.

Because of a budget surplus in SC, many residents received a check for as much as $800. While I know this is very helpful to many and I didn't complain receiving ours, I do wish some of that surplus would have been applied to schools and roads. We need more schools built and those existing, better maintained, and roads repaved. The roads are crumbling and are full of rim bending potholes

That’s just the beginning. NY uses 75% of the revenue collected from gas and use taxes for non-highway purposes. They aren’t going to give up that honey pot without a fight. Once mileage taxes become the norm I see a thriving business popping up turning back odometers. You’ll see a lot of cars that suddenly go from 15k miles a year to 1500. That will make it interesting when buying a used car.

It's probably more expensive to keep a horse than it is a car....and you have to clean up after it or pay a fine for polluting.

They keep the road taxes low on EVs until there are lots of them, and then they'll make up the income by charging a high license or yearly registration fee. The money has to come from somewhere.

Same with solar panels. The government will charge or find another way to collect taxes eventually. The money saving schemes will end up costing more in the long run.

When you only drive about 2000 miles a year it doesn't really help to build many roads. The money they collect from you probably helps to pay to fix the potholes on your street.

You're a little behind the times on this one. I knew a guy, many decades ago, who ran a small business turning back odometers. He went around to dealerships and used car lots and turned back odometers, that's what he did, that's all he did. For many years he made a living doing just that.

Then, in 1972, they passed a federal law making it illegal to tamper with an odometer. Bingo, end of his business.

For sure those crooks have always been with us but they’ve usually worked for crooked car dealers or curbstoners. I’m just guessing that once they start taxing milage, every grandma and church pastor will be doing it too.

Yes, I’d like to get something that can access other modules that record mileage to check against the odometer. Doesn’t Carly only work with smartphones?
