Back in 2018 my wife and I paid about $27k for her new Canadian-made CR-V EX with AWD. We got a good deal, but the list price was only $29,325 (although it had on top of that an extra c. $1500 of "protection package" stuff installed by the dealer that we said we didn't want, but which they ended up throwing in).

Anyway, I was shocked to see that the all-new 2023 CR-V has a price that tops out at $40,240 for the Sport Hybrid Touring. I thought, wow, you used to be able to get a Cadillac for that kind of money. Well, it turns out you still can get a Cadillac for that kind of money....(The window sticker is small, but you can enlarge it if you open it in a new window. Anyway, even with options it's c. $41k)

Caddy: base model. 47% residual on a 36/15 lease
Honda: top trim. 64% residual on a 36/15 lease

Not saying you have to lease it, but if the residuals turn out to be accurate, the Caddy will suffer much greater depreciation.

Another anecdotal sign of the market softening...a couple months back I had requested an early term quote on my Polestar. With a wholesale amount of $47,500, the early term option wasn't attractive.

I just requested an updated one, just to see what it would cost to move on, and that wholesale value went down $6,500, to $41k.

Seems like my decision to lease and lock in the residual was based on solid reasoning.

That’s nice if you can actually get it for that price. Even with the improvements in inventory dealers are still slapping “market adjustments” as well as the traditional mop & glo stuff on their cars.

I know one option I wouldn’t want on that Caddie would be the teen driver listed under safety and security.

Finally got to adjust the clutch on the Alto and take it for a spin. Boy, let’s see…

The good: I have never driven one before, but I suspect this one has been fiddled with. Seems to me to be a racing clutch. The grab is immediate and violent. I believe maybe it has been tuned. Granted, it is very light, but spinning the tires at will in first or second seems excessive for 64 hp. And that is not by dropping the clutch. I found I could start rolling along and then put my foot down and it would smoke ‘em. The interior is clean and the seats are great and very sporty.

The bad: oh, so much bad. We have the previously mentioned bad paint. The fuel gauge apparently doesn’t work. It rattles, it rides like an ox cart, the heat is nonfunctioning, and the shifter is almost impossibly vague. This would make a great track toy and an awful daily driver.

Hardest lease to break. Only way out is a Volvo dealer and you are buying another one.

In late 2018 we found our 2015 X1; 5 years later we are still very happy with it. Hopefully we will get another 4-5 years out of it.

hopefully buy it and trade in/sell the current one still. Maverick values still seem to be holding up, and the hybrids especially are hard to come by. that deal will be hard to pass up. even if I buy it and pay taxes I could still flip for profit.

of course I don't know if my odds are better than 50/50 that this one arrives either. Hey, it's only been 14 months since I first ordered one!

Would it work to go down to just your RDX until the new hybrid Maverick arrives? My guess is that you'll get more for your current Maverick now than in 4-6 months. And hey, maybe the profit could even be the start of a "fun car" fund?

A Ford Maverick 2.0 Lariat tested in the real world with a 0-60 of 6.13 seconds (at the 16 minute mark in this video). Ten years ago a 2013 BMW 320i could go from 0-60 in about 6.5.

Details on the new EV tax credit. By 2024 buyers of qualifying EVs should be able to get the $7500 off at the point of sale, which is kind of a big deal. Excluded from the new credit are EVs made outside of North America, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is made in Korea. The Audi e-tron, which is made in Europe, also won't qualify. My guess is that Hyundai and Audi will try to move some production of these vehicles to North America in the next couple of years.

Oh boy. The out buildings here have ballooned to over $100k.

Shed is being installed right now. Of course, they ran into problems creating the base (because they didn’t listen to me in the first place) and the cost has increased. Unknown yet but probably another $1500.

The garage builder was here last night. Base price was originally $42k. That more than doubled with the site prep, cement work, and interior finishing. I choked but, in the end, it didn’t make sense to NOT do the whole thing now. Oh, still no electrical in that, though. I’ll have to address that on my own. Construction likely won’t start on that till late spring/early summer, though.

On the bright side, my accountant says all this extra sq footage is deductible for the business.

Yep, my wife's the same, strand her once and either I start using it or it's gone within days. Zero tolerance for breakdowns especially when she's on the road. Do get it but sometimes, it's pretty minor and once repaired, never happens again.
So, you guys are basically right here, just think I'm finally ready to pull the trigger. Don't 100% trust an EV and what happens with the disposal issue down the road. The infrastructure still isn't quite where it needs to be yet either. Saw another Corolla Cross today in red and did like it. Size wise, think it'll work but having trouble finding the "unicorn" that one dealer said I'm looking for. Windchill Pearl with the black & white interior, JBL audio system & a sun/moon roof doesn't seem that hard of a vehicle to locate but so far...crickets from any dealer I've tried.
Nothing else really excites me though a Kona N could fill the bill but has to have the Harmon Kardon sound system to even be considered. So we'll just wait & see. Got the Golf washed the other day and a co-worker remarked about me getting a new vehicle. I laughed when I told him it just had it's 8th birthday in our garage and he was impressed. If he had really given it a closer look, he's have seen the flaws in the paint but from far away, looks damn good. Driving well to, scheduled a tire rotation for early Monday morning, all maintenance up to date... what more could I want? Just about to hit 73K which really ain't that much in this day & age. Now, if interest rates would come down just a bit, I'd pull the trigger as I do want to finance a good part this time around. Hopefully putting the Golf and $8K down should give me a very manageable monthly nut to deal with, would like around $200 to $250 but could possibly go to $300/month if necessary.

There are regulars here who know a lot more about business and finance than yours truly, but I don't think interest rates are going to come down anytime soon. Paul Krugman thinks that we will eventually return to very low interest rates, but he didn't predict when, and it didn't sound like he was thinking that would happen in 2023.

Agreed - pretty sure the fed will hike interest rates a couple more times in early 2023, then see where the economy stands at that point before making any decisions.

What is the Golf worth? Knowing that value, plus the $8K cash, should give you a good idea of what your budget is, with the payments you'd like to have. How long would you be willing to finance?

Drove a Polestar at work yesterday and did like it. Think an EV would work for us as we have the gasser for the long distance stuff. Had to feather the accelerator and after a few miles, was much easier to modulate. Luckily, there wasn't much traffic so it was a basically smooth ride of about 15 miles. The other co-worker refused to drive it for some reason...I said sure. So yes, I could very easily do an EV but, probably won't this time.
Had my yearly review yesterday also. Got good marks and boss liked that I'm one of his "go to drivers" which he counts on. He knows he can call me at the last minute and I'll come in. Also said all the lead drivers like me on their team because they know that once I get the address where the vehicles are going, they know I'll be there on time, with no drama. I prefer the address due to my postal training, give me the branch number and I come up blank as there's so many of them. He also liked that I tend to get along with everyone. We have a lot of "personalities" and some won't work with others for unknown reasons. He was happy that he can fit me in anywhere with no conflicts. All in all, a very good review and now, get my $.25 raise/hour!
In a few weeks, it'll be my ten year anniversary working in the rental car business. Been a quick ten years I must say. Best part is I like the current company a whole lot. treated with dignity & respect and getting a 401K and profit sharing being a part time employee are nice perks I've never had before. Probably was divine intervention back in November 2019 when I was so burnt out at Hertz that I was planning to quit by the end of December. My new gig being so close to home made all the difference so I thank G-d for this great opportunity.

Then I get the private offer (rebate for not building my 2022) of $2,750 off that. So net purchase price right about $29,000 + TTL. Considering that finding one at MSRP is still nearly impossible, and hybrids still have $2-$5,000 ADMs at most places, I doubt I will come out behind on this one! it is also a lot of car for the money with all the goodies on it.

Welp, my Prius appears to be afflicted with the "combination meter" failure common on the Gen2 models. Supposedly, Toyota used a capacitor in the instrument cluster which was barely large enough, and as they age and stop working as well as new, it causes the gauges to fail to wake up when the vehicle is powered up. It's worse when the 12V battery is at a high state of charge, which explains why that's always been an issue for me if I put the car in accessory mode while it's connected to the Battery Tender. Easy fix for my dad, the soldering expert, but pulling the board out looks like it will be a pain. There was an extended warranty for something like nine years and unlimited miles, but mine is well beyond the time parameters.

@Sandman6472 - my GF really likes the Corolla Cross and was close to pulling the trigger on one, but they apparently do not offer mid-level ones equipped with Softex, which she wants (and does not want the other features or extra cost of a fully loaded one). It's less powerful and gets worse MPG than the Camry she has now, but she likes the seating position better. It appears the Corolla Cross offers a more powerful hybrid powertrain in 2023, which would be the one I'd look at.

@stickguy - I'm running premium in the Maverick. I may try to start going to a local Circle K on Thursdays, since they offer $0.20 off premium on that day.

I don't think I put premium in even once. and have never noticed anything worrisome like knocking. if I punted 15 HP I probably have not ever needed it. plus my MPG is quite good on RUG.

the spreads here are still obscene. Most stations are over $1.00 at this point.

one positive to the hybrid. it only calls for regular!

That’s going to be one heck of a tax loss although having big losses in the first two years won’t cause you to get audited. (I hope)

Why not just order a car exactly as you like since they probably won’t have much in stock. That way you can get some extra use out of your current car while you wait.

Also said all the lead drivers like me on their team because they know that once I get the address where the vehicles are going, they know I'll be there on time, with no drama. I prefer the address due to my postal training, give me the branch number and I come up blank as there's so many of them. He also liked that I tend to get along with everyone. We have a lot of "personalities" and some won't work with others for unknown reasons. He was happy that he can fit me in anywhere with no conflicts. All in all, a very good review and now, get my $.25 raise/hour!
In a few weeks, it'll be my ten year anniversary working in the rental car business. Been a quick ten years I must say. Best part is I like the current company a whole lot. treated with dignity & respect and getting a 401K and profit sharing being a part time employee are nice perks I've never had before. Probably was divine intervention back in November 2019 when I was so burnt out at Hertz that I was planning to quit by the end of December. My new gig being so close to home made all the difference so I thank G-d for this great opportunity.

I like the Polestar for the blistering acceleration. I can see why some drivers don’t want to operate it. That whole thing about not turning it off but just walking away is unnerving to some people.

I also had my review this week and was told I’m getting a raise but because NY is raising the minimum wage more than my raise I won’t see any additional increase. I feel cheated somehow.

I like the comment about “personalities”. Very diplomatic. I like to think of it like being in middle school again. Sad to see 70 year olds who haven’t grown up.
