The 50s had a resurgence in the 70s, I guess it is about time for the 00s to have a comeback. 80s and 90s nostalgia is as hot as ever right now too.

There's also a small movement called "04 rich", where younger people enjoy things, cars especially, that were high luxury in the early 00s but have now depreciated to the price of a nice lunch (Range Rovers, many period MBs and BMWs, surviving Audis, etc).

The only person I know who has shunned the smartphone is my mom, who is of an age where it might be understandable. However, her brother, who is just a few years younger, has had one for ages - he's always been kind of a "gamer", and I think mostly plays games on it. To my mom's credit, she's not a luddite, as she is firmly attached to her iPad.

In WA, the bag thing changed to a "bag tax", where the thin old bags have been replaced by thicker plastic bags you have to pay for (8 cents apiece, I believe), or use your own. I don't mind this - the new thick bags are very durable and can be washed and/or re-used dozens of times. I also use them for garage items, car rags, chemical storage, etc. I am ok with it.

From what I heard the battery WAS punctured during the crash. But as they wiggled the car to get it dislodged from the guardrail, they created a short which in turn created a spark that was enough to start the fire.

Almost sounds like leave sleeping dogs alone.

You know one thing that is pretty amazing here? How long many of us have been posting. I’ve been here since 2006 and many of you are 20+ years. I wonder how many forums can claim this.

I think I recall a conversation from the old days where at one point everyone’s date reset and some seniority was lost.

My prior identity was Div2; when I was banned by SWMNBN in 2008 I came back a few months later as my present ID. I do miss the old Inside Line forum; it was minimally moderated and the regulars did not suffer fools gladly. One such idjit was actually banned, primarily due to the bandwidth consumed by the regulars who relished confronting said idjit regarding his moronic posts.

We had an experience of what life would be like without cellphones, the internet and any other modern conveniences last night. At about 11:00 a drunk sheared off the power pole in front of the house next door knocking out power

We had no electricity until 10:00 this morning. The only good thing was that the house never dropped below 60 degrees thanks to my obsession with insulation. The driver fled the scene but was caught a short time later. The police even gave me all his insurance information in case I wanted to sue for emotional distress caused by not posting here.

Makes me glad our wiring is underground. Of course about 15 years ago the utility was having problems with the underground cables popping. We would get flickers and sometimes no power for a couple of hours.

Meanwhile they connected to spare lines to replace the severed lines. Later they'd dig up the break after locating it by "radar." Eventually they had a contractor come through and inject silicone material into all the lines that are underground to prevent the problem that started due to aging. Haven't had any trouble lately. Knock on wood.

The llines are approaching 50 years of age.

We are members at BJs, not Sams, and I can't see scan and go being fully effective because I have never gone through the self check and not needed an employee to come over a couple of times to sort out some problem with the scanning. Well if it would eliminate all those people that sit at the self checkout searching for the bar code and then have difficulty scanning it then it would speed up the process of self checkout.

you expect those people to be able to find the app on the phone, open it, and correctly locate the barcode and scan it in the middle of the aisle? While also clogging up the path?

I don't remember all the names of this place but I know I was here by about 1998, based on what care I got at the time!

send those millennials to my place. I just finished organizing the last of the boxes from the move (my storage room is now very neat, even put a rug down) and I have at least one box with a bunch of digital cameras (heck, I think I still have a few film ones, including a nice35mm SLR Nikon that takes film).

pretty sure I can find a few pre-smart cell phones too. and at least 1 VCR.

some more "be the guy" action today. Helped our son finish installing the vinyl plank flooring in his basement. Actually came out pretty darned good. He just has left putting up some molding and a transition piece but he can handle that. Between that, the LED lights (those high output ones that look like a spaceship) he bought, and the drylock paint the ugly unfinished side of the basement is looking pretty sharp. Good enough to use for people (Foosball table moving over to that side).

also pulled out some old drain lines that we finally realized were no longer connected to anything. Cut that up into sections and hauled home to put in the dumpster (handy having a house being built across the street!)

this week I need to build a box to cover the open sump pit on that side of the basement. I already dumpster dived some 2x4s for the base, now need to cruise though the dumpsters looking for a big enough piece of plywood to make a top for it (why buy new when you can scavenge for free?) Those construction people through all kinds of good stuff out.

Not a great morning so far. The water heater was leaking this morning. Not just dripping out but gushing out. I had to turn off the water to the house since there isn't a shut-off dedicated to the water heater. Why isn't there?

I had noticed the floor was damp there a week or so ago. I had put more topsoil along the outside wall in that spot to drain water away from the house this Fall and figured that maybe it needed more. It must have been seeping for quite a while.

I'll call my plumber friend when it's time to wake up. No sense in irritating him any more than necessary since it's a Sunday.

Ugh, I feel your pain as I recently had to replace our water heater as it was leaking from the bottom seam onto the garage floor. It was only 6 years old and just out of warranty.

Probably only get one in every 6 months.

You can order them online and Samsung does have a smart phone with a foldable screen that's just like a flip phone.

I am mildly paranoid about water heaters, not that I ever had one fail on me yet. But my very elderly next-door neighbor had hers let go a few years ago and all of the surrounding neighbors responded when word got out. This sounds self-serving but I don't mean it that way - when I arrived there were about a half-dozen neighbor ladies buzzing around in near panic, since her basement level already had several inches of standing water in it and the thing was still gushing. About all I knew was that most installations have a cold water shutoff to the heater, and hers did, so I was able to stop it from further flooding by shutting that off.

Amazingly to me, one of the neighbor ladies called the insurance company for her and she was able to file a claim immediately, while another called a local plumber who showed up within an hour or so with a new water heater and installed it. But there was a lot of damage to the finished parts of the basement, and remediation crews were in there working for a while over the next couple of weeks.

One of the problems is that lithium batteries contain, surprise, lithium and when lithium gets wet it creates hydrogen gas which we all know goes up in flames. So if you pour water on a burning lithium battery you're creating fuel for the fire. Plus lithium burns very hot so even if you put the fire out the residual heat could reignite the hydrogen gas, so it is best to keep the water going after the fire is out to sufficiently cool the batteries.

I called the plumber. He is getting one from his supplier and coming over in a little while.

He kept saying he would do it first thing tomorrow morning until I told him all the water was off...to the whole house. The first thing he is going to do is put a shut-off valve on the cold water pipe to the tank.

The last time I had to replace one I had my other friend, who is a master plumber but doesn't have his own company, do it. I even asked about a shut-off, but he didn't do it. His relatives confirmed my suspicions that he does stuff on his own house much better than on other houses.

I really don't find smart phones at all distracting at social functions. But then again at such events I put my ringers on mute (God invented voicemail for a reason) and I can easily wait several hours to see what some other idiot is posting online or see the text from my sister complaining I didn't answer the phone when she called a few minutes earlier because I am a firm believer that just because the phone rings doesn't mean I have to answer it.

No I expect that one of those people is always following me and when they see me go into a store they call all the other ones to get there fast so they can all get ahead of me at the checkout. How else is there so many of those people ahead of me at the self checkout?

I talked to my retired plumber a year ago about replacing my hot water heater.
He said that the puts a valve on the outlet side of the tank as well as on the inlet.
He mentioned that way the hot water tank can be completely isolated and
replaced without having to keep people from accidentally opening a hot faucet
and cold faucet at the same time and having water
come back to the tank's outlet and leak out.

Feels like 50 years, but I know that can’t be right - but still “feels” like 50 years.

I had a plumber in for a clog, and had him look at my water heater, as it's over 10 yrs old, and appeared to be occasionally sending water out of the pressure relief valve (rusty stains on the basement floor).

Turns out the water was condensation off the outlet pipe for our direct vent gas furnace. It was dripping right over the edge of the water heater. He said the water heater was old, and might go soon, but he couldn't find anything wrong with it.

Now, I have to call the HVAC guy about the condensation..
