    I've never thought about it but I think cars here in the 60's or 70's did often have a radio you could turn on without ignition.

    Strangely, on a separate point you had to pay a Radio Licence if your car had a radio - I think from the 30's to about 1970 - indeed you had to pay one for a radio in the home too although nowadays that has been subsumed by the TV Licence

    It's what keeps the BBC afloat...

    What I found curious about the Renault 16 as late as 1975 wasn’t the radio would play with the ignition off but the wipers didn’t self park and also continue to operate with the ignition off.

    Old MBs are like that, both the fintail and my old 1989 300SE have radios that operate without needing a key in the ignition. Years ago I learned that if you forget to turn off the fintail's radio and let it sit for a week or so, it will drain the battery.

    Our family had 2 at the same time.
    I drove one in college for a while. I put wet towels around the rear door windows so they would freeze and cut down on the cold air blowing in. It had that great gas heater, too.

    Yes this is a variant of the Austin Allegro but its not actually a British one and was called something else

    I drove an early Allegro once - I was a designated driver (not drinking ) on a pub crawl and the bloke who owned the car gave me the keys - four of us were in the car and frankly it was a pig to drive - it even had the "quartic" steering wheel which was sort of squared off a bit like a sixties TV screen

    It wasn't exactly fast either being the basic 1098cc engine version

    I got us all back from the pub though I vowed never to have a go in one of them again.

    I'd only just passed my driving test at 17 and was less willing thereafter be the designated driver...

    The car in front is German but not an Opel, - it was from a lesser known brand although they did sell quite a lot right across Europe. ...

    @texases the Allegro was assembled in Italy as the Autobianchi Regent - this one is from 1974.

    Yes, the Lloyd Arabella - which was sold in the UK in about 1960 but that ended when the Borgward Group of companies went bust in about 1963 I think

    Quite a lot of the British sales were also from our troops in Germany buying them (tax free) and then bringing them in as they finished their military service.

    Same thing happened with Ford Taunus and Opels too but it wasn't just German cars - I knew someone who had bought a Simca Aronde while serving in the RAF in Germany.

    It looks prewar but is not. i see one here in the Concord NH area every so often.
    It's finished in two shades of tan it is really gorgeous.

    Here's one I don't think I posted previously, Granville St in Vancouver BC, in 1960. There isn't much remarkable in terms of vehicles here (although I think I see one somewhat unusual import in the distance) but it is a nice retrospective of a downtown street in that era before the great decline.

    VW Transporter pickup is the 'furrin job.

    I think much of Granville is still OK, it's that East Hastings/DT lower east side area you have to watch out for. To the west is still plenty of high priced condos for sketchy offshore money, a keystone of modern Vancouver.

    That's a '58 I believe. The '59s are quite different.
