My math may be a little off, but the sentiment is accurate. the idea being that if a car cost $50,000 and depreciates 53%, (26,500) that’s 13,250 the first and second year, or $1104 a month, where the third year depreciates only $3000 or $250 a month. 75% less
So a 2 year lease cost you $1104 a month.
And 3 year cost you (29,500/36) $819 28% less
Is this escalation typical? Just assumed there might be some variation, but not this drastic from a 2 to 3 year lease. They are practically begging you to pick the three year lease over the 2 year.
Edit- I guess we don’t really have many 12 month leases to see the residuals, but in a average car it looks like first year depreciation is 30%, second year 15%, then single digit percents after that in the third year.
If you're calculating depreciation from MSRP, then that's not real world. With incentives, the CAP cost is much, much less, making the actual depreciation for the lessee very different.
Also, giant incentives, like those on EVs, often skews calculations in favor of shorter terms.
In the real world, without incentives, there wouldn't be any decent lease payments on 18 or 24 month leases. (because the depreciation is too great)
