Plantar fasciitis is a foot ailment that can be painful and takes a while to heal but I don’t think it is ever fatal. Dunno about the brain rot. I’ve had more scans, tests and other diagnostic procedures than I can count. It happens once the medical profession gets its hooks into a pigeon patient.

I think he’s just generally down about his health. I can relate. I’ve been trying to avoid a knee replacement for years. Suddenly over the last couple of days the other knee is really painful. I don’t remember injuring it, and I know it still has cartilage in there because I’ve seen the x-rays. I dunno what’s happening with it. I can barely go up and down stairs right now. Hoping it clears up soon.

@graphicguy, I know it’s too late now but I assume you were using Epson branded ink. At least with cartridges, generic substitutes with Epson printers do not work well at all. And, Epson cartridges are very expensive.

Years ago, we had an Epson ink jet printer.
Worked fine for several years, then stopped working for no discernable reason.
Did an internet search and it turns out they would stop working after a certain point and you could reset it using some arcane button pressing sequence, which did work to make it functional again.

Speaking of printers, our main printer at work has an issue that when you send a print job to it you get a warning that the printer is out of toner but goes ahead and prints the job. It does this all the time even if the toner cartridge is new. The IT department can't find out what is wrong and therefore can't fix it. So we just live with it.

Man, I thought I was cheap! Though actually you are retired so I get it. If I had endless free time I would try stuff like that too

I still have an epson with cartridges. A replacement set is almost as
Much as a new printer. When it finally dies I plan to get a laser. I don’t really need color I dont think.

I was told, or rather my family was told, to get my affairs in order as best they could when I was hospitalized 7 years ago. But I wasn’t going out to dinner talking about it, I was circling the drain.

Seems rather extreme in regards to a foot problem. Maybe brain rot is Alzheimer’s? That would make more sense.

I just got back from Costco after buying a new HP Laser Jet printer. I ain't playing with inks, anymore.

Took me all of 5 minutes to connect the new printer to the network and get my first prints out.

    ;)

Funny story! I did something similar with my last inkjet, then moved to laser and haven't regretted it for one moment.

A couple of weeks ago, while we were in CT for a wedding I noticed a screw in my let rear tire.
Tire held air, so when I got home I cut off the protruding part of it with my Dremel.
After watching some tire repair video's, I don't think any tire place will plug it, plus I'm not sure how far it is into the tire.
Decided to just grind it down some more with the Dremel and hope for the best.

From what I can see, that tire should be able to be repaired. I’ve had several tires years ago, plugged when a nail/screw was in that area.

As for continuing to drive it that way, I wouldn’t do that unless you’re trying to gather empirical data for a tire company. Otherwise you’re a brave man or just plain goofy.

A national tire store will not repair that tire puncture but a local mom and pop store will.

National tire stores will not repair a puncture in the first tread block on the inside or outisde of the tire.

Back in the day when Office Max existed, I went there to buy a new replacement multi-color cartridge for my HP printer that was about 2 years old. Actually had it in my hand but I was looking at the new HP’s to see if they had any features that I’d be interested in.

As I was looking I came upon a newer HP model that was reconditioned that cost $15 more than the cartridge I had in my hand. I asked the store manager that helped me find the cartridge I needed about it and he said every now and then they get reconditioned units and they have the full HP warranty. I decided to put the replacement cartridge back and buy the reconditioned unit. The store manager said, “what are you going to do, buy a new printer every time you need a cartridge”? My reply was, “yeah, if the difference is only 15 bucks that’s exactly what I’ll do”. Too bad for me, I’ve never seen another reconed printer at a low price like that since. At least I made out that one time. IIRC, that printer lasted at least 5 years.

I don’t doubt what you say and the tires I had plugged were done at the local gas station. Of course this was back in the day when gas stations actually did such things and more. That otta tell you how long ago I had those tires plugged. I don’t think tire patches even existed in those days but I could be wrong about that.

if you don't mind just having a plug, there are plenty of DIY kits.

last time I had a patch done was back in 2021 when my daughter lived in Wilmington and picked up a screw in a tire on her Jetta. and of course, kept forgetting to tell me about that light. Finally remembered IIRC right before she was going to move back so we took a ride down to help her with things. I brought my pump and took a look at the tire, and found it way low and located the damage. Pumped it up, and drove a few miles away to a little local shop (reminded me of Chico and the Man). I think the guy running the place was the only one that I spoke a common language with. But I explained the problem, he pointed to the sidewalk, so I coerced the kid to drive up there (she wanted to leave) and within 5 minutes the car was jacked up (with us in it), wheel off to a bench where it was plugged and tested in the water tank, and 5 more back on the car. I think they charged me $10 for it. Never gave another problem.

the chain place had no appointments until the next week, we would probably have needed to leave it for hours, and who knows if they would have even fixed it.

That brings up a question, I want to put snow tires on the truck. No way I’m buying four but I wonder if the big box will give me a hassle. I’ve had them give me an argument about just installing new AS tires on just one axle. Yeah, I know that mixing snows with AS could have a slight effect on handling but I won’t be driving so extensively that I care.

Had a long phone conversation with my golf buddy's wife last night. I was concerned for her well being as much as I was concerned with his. Told her as much. All of a sudden she poured it all out. The planar faciatis was taken care of a month ago. He was hobbling for a couple of days, but his Dr got him squared away. So, that's no longer an issue.

As far as the alleged "brain rot", she said he's been telling that to everyone he sees. She said she hadn't noticed any change in his forgetfulness (or lack thereof). Dr's tests turn up nothing. That kind of coincides with his hypochondriac nature. Drs can't figure out about his fascination about his demise, as he's relatively healthy.

She thinks he's depressed but doesn't know why or what to do about it. I guess every day it's a similar story....he's dying, she's a bad person, she needs to take care of him better, there are all sorts of diseases he wonders if he's suffering from, etc. She's even urged him to go see a preacher or a priest. Or, at least to go see a therapist. She even called one of the phone therapy Drs to get him to talk to them. He wouldn't do it.

Sweet lady. I told her if I could help, even if she just needs to get away, I'd sit with her husband for a bit to give her respite. She says there's nothing wrong with him that they can find, so not sure what to do.

They've been married probably 35-40 years and she's thinking of separating from him because she can't handle it. But, if she did, she doesn't know what would become of him. They have no kids. Not sure about other family.

    Tough situation.

Makes me glad I have you miscreants to dialog with.

Printer......KInd of wondering about my own state of mind for ripping apart an ink jet printer making a mess, trying to fix it. I guess this is just another piece of technology that's not meant to be fixed but disposed of.

The HP printer is definitely more solidly made than the Epson. And yes, the inks on the Epson are not cheap. The black ink came in those big bottles, so they lasted a while. The colors? Not so much.

HP printer has a document feeder, double sided copying and scanning. It pits fast compared to the Epson. I feel like a real professional, now. LOL!

My experience with Epson long ago was that their printers had separate jets in a unit and the cartridges were just cartridges. IIRC the HP and other printers have the jets that squirt the ink in the cartridge, so that's replaced with each NEW cartridge. With a refilled cartridge I assume you're getting a used jet system--I recall something about the refillers mark the cartridge and only refill up to 5 times?

After a period of use the Epson ink jet mechanism needs to be replaced. Cleaning didn't work for me. I decided it was JANG--just ain't no good as Swallens stores used to have as a category for merchandise the user didn't like.

I ditched the BOU (bad old unit) an bought a Canon which scans, copies, calls the Pentagon and all sorts of things I haven't used. It was around $60-70 at Microcenter at the time. I had a simple black laser printer which used Samsung cartridges for the toner. It had a limit on how many would print from each cartridge and then burned a wire in the control so it couldn't be reused without refurbishing that. JANG went the BOU.

I had a couple of cheap HP inkjets early on which were cheap for a reason. They failed in short order. I then bought a heavily marked-down Canon all-in-one which does everything but cook dinner - color or B&W printing, copying, scanning, faxing, whatever. It takes expensive ink cartridges though and goes through them at an alarming rate. Once it gets going it prints really quickly, but if you wake it up while it is sleeping to print a page it can take several minutes for it to go through all its gyrations before it does anything. Annoying.

Years ago I had a little laser printer in my office that was great and did everything I wanted. One day I came in and found it gone. IT had decided there were too many people with them and so bought large and expensive HP networked laser printers that were the size of a bar fridge for various areas throughout the office that we had to share. A total PITA. Damn IT types!!

In the past I had good luck with two all-in-one Canon units. They took generic cartridges and worked well, that is until their printer “life” shortened to 1 1/2 years and then I gave up on them.

    I dunno? I do what I can.

He's always been a curmudgeon. We used to flip a coin to see who was going to ride with him in the golf cart when he played with us. No one wanted to because of his chronic complaining.

I'm not painting a flattering picture of him. But, I think he's been this way for a long while. Therapy would help him, but he refuses help. I don't think there's anything physically wrong with him. He can still shoot in the mid 80s on a golf course. So, he's not too debilitated.

    What to do?

His wife is just a dear soul. How he ended up with her is a mystery to us all. I'm never one to tell someone they should leave their spouse. But, if ever there was a reason, this is it. I can't imagine hearing his constant bitching every waking hour.

She has a sister in St Louis. I suggested she visit her for a week or so, just to get away for a while. I told her I'd check in on her husband to make sure he's OK. Or, she can hire a nurse to come see if he's OK. I don't know why he can't take care of himself, but she seems to think he can't. I believe he's convinced her he can't.

We have a Brother laser printer/all-in-one. Has a flat bed for scanning/copying, and an automatic feed, as well. Cartridges slide in and out. They seem to last forever. Of course, it's B/W only. I bet we've had it for 6 years or more. Can't remember the cost, but it was definitely in the $100-$150 range.

My model has been discontinued, but this one seems similar:

Appears they are around $200, now.

Double size toner cartridge is about $60, now. It lasts forever. (or, seems like it).

Appears they are around $200, now.

Double size toner cartridge is about $60, now. It lasts forever. (or, seems like it).

Just checked. Up here they are $300 in worthless Canadian dollars. Now you know why I use that term.

From getting knuckle deep in the Epson printer, those jets are pretty flimsy. Actually, now that I know how it's made and generally how it works from literally being knuckle deep in working on it, it's not made very well, either. It's not a $50 printer. I think I paid a little over $200 for it a few years ago.

Thing is, I'm not an engineer and even I could tell it wasn't engineered very well, and certainly not made well enough to last very long. I'm kind of surprised I got 3+ years out of it after knowing what's inside.

I gave the HP a look-see inside. Much more metal. The plastic is better and more robust. It fits together better. Even the screws are metal vs the Epson's plastic screws. Overall, just a better made and engineered printer.

HP toner is expensive, too. But, it doesn't dry out like the ink in the Epson did. Looking on line, the toner that the HP came with is supposed to last a while. We'll see. The one I bought is a color unit. So, it has black, yellow, cyan and magenta toners in it.

When it needs to be replaced, you can get remanufactured toner packs (all the colors) for about $120. That's for the extra large toner that's supposed to last a very long time. The standard toner packs runs about $100.

The printer itself was $350. But, it's a scanner, printer, copier, fax (whomever uses faxes any more), duplex, etc.

Epson Super Tank inks are about $200 for the 4 color pack.

———————————————— Back in the day when Office Max existed,

I better stop off at my local Office Max and let then know they don't exist anymore. B)

I went there to buy a new replacement multi-color cartridge for my HP printer that was about 2 years old. IIRC, that printer lasted at least 5 years. jmonroe

Gee that would cost me an extra $45 a year with no real benefit.

if you don't mind just having a plug, there are plenty of DIY kits.

I have two kits, one is in the trunk of the BMW (no spare tire) and one in a saddlebag of my bike (no place for a spare). Never needed to use either (knock on wood) but we have them if needed.

For all you bourbon fans. Two bottles at list found by my BIL at QFC last night. One for me.

I just ordered 11 bottles of different wheated bourbons. I blame @28firefighter 😳

Why not just steal 11 bottles? The DA can't make a case with just 11 bottles.

When I get like that my wife just tells me to knock it off. I don’t tell her I’m dying anymore, in fact, I don’t even tell that the government is watching me. Maybe some tough love is required.

You’re a good friend, @graphicguy. Seems like an unfortunate way to spend one’s time. Funny thing about this is that my experience is constant thoughts and negative attitudes about being ill tend to make it a self-fulfilling prophecy. He keeps it up, he may indeed get his wish.

Some people just want to complain and some who are suffering do so in silence. If you remember last spring I was struck by a car which really screwed up my back but I try not to mention it. Even my wife has to drag it out of me.

That bring said may I ask my poster friends some advice? Since the accident i have gone through physical therapy and a few procedures on my back. I have had some success with them but I still have issues with the back. I really think that I am having minimal success with the recent procedures and I really believe that any further procedures will do much more for me. Do you think that I should go through with another procedure or should I just end it and deal with what pain I have? I mean it is a big problem but not big enough to keep me from doing most things, justci have to manage the pain.

    What say you?

If there is the possibility of getting your back back to (almost) normal,I say go for it. The short term inconvenience of post op recovery is outweighed by the better mobility for years to come.

@snakeweasel, a while back OfficeMax and Office Depot merged and they are now officially called Office Depot at least that’s what the store manager told me when I asked him right after the merger. That’s why I said WHEN OfficeMax existed.

As for your back, i have no expertise to say one way or the other but I hope you can return to mostly normal without surgery.

    Good luck.

My wife and daughter want so bad to see the Eras tour. I looked at the Toronto show and it’s about 8K for 4 nosebleed seats. That’s about what we are paying for our cruise next year…..

Vocals and arrangements spot on and the whole production is like nothing I’ve ever seen.

My single ticket (with an unrestricted view, but about as far away from the stage as one can be), purchased as a resale a couple of days before, was around $1,600 with fees. Agree with you on the production quality, it was pretty amazing. WAY too people-y for my tastes, though, some of whom were obnoxious. Chaining arms together so your party of ten can get through a single file barricade in one go should be a shooting offense, as should using a halo light on top of your phone in a darkened venue.

I flew back this morning. Walked around the Quarter for about an hour trying to find a place to eat dinner last night, well after that night's concertgoers would have entered the arena, and the restaurants and bars were still packed. Went back to Fives on Jackson Square, thinking they had a tomahawk pork chop dish, but it wasn't on the menu, I can't have their oysters, and there wasn't really anything else on the menu (maybe a salad?). I went back to an old favorite, Backspace Bar, which had been packed earlier in the afternoon, but miraculously, had cleared out and felt like it was a normal Saturday night.
