This has been a long winter already. I have had enough of it.

Wife had a 7:00 doctor appoint so at 6:15 I was out shoveling last nights snow off the driveway. Thankfully only about an inch and it was normal snow instead of slush but still a lot of acreage. But at least I don’t have packed down areas where the tires went over it. Also have a service tech coming this morning for our fireplace so needed it clear for them.

Don’t think the private road is getting done today though since usually plow guys don’t come out for less than a certain amount (3” maybe?) so that will just get packed down from traffic until it warms up. I did some in front of our house to make it easier on my wife. I am actually surprised she just went herself instead of asking me to go with her.

Main roads looked fully clear so I expect they are just wet. But the Acura will need a good bath underneath next week.

Been in the high 40’s past few mornings - green iguanas falling out of trees. We have an an iguana removal service that been picking them up and disposing of the critters very early every cold morning. Easier than shooting them out of trees with pellet guns which is what they do during thr day.

We are infested with them - thus the reason for contracting the services to rid them from our 5000 people population here in my development

I would probably prefer having iguana's falling from trees than have the 4 feet of snow they had in Buffalo.

Remember, you wanted to move south. It was her insistence to move further into snow country. So you should demand that she shovel the snow.

Painting update - the majority of the house is now complete, as of Monday. The only rooms left are the laundry room, the three bedrooms and the master bath.

Laundry room may be next, followed by the master bath. I think the bedrooms will be last as we are also talking about replacing the carpets in those rooms, which is not likely to happen until our doxies (ages 15 and 16) cross the rainbow bridge.

We have no kids in our community.

BTW, the Iguana service has disposed of 278 of these critters since June. Remember, the iguana is NOT indigenous to Florida - they destroy greenage throughout South Florida.

I just received a nice card from my Florida Mercedes Dealership, and it even included a gift of $25 off my nest service visit.
Hmm, last year the oil change cost me $500 as they couldn't just do an oil change, they had to do an A Service even though I only use the car for half a year. Meanwhile, my indie Euro-mechanic just did the oil change as instructed for $180.
    Thanks for the gift! :#

What the iguanas don't turn bright colors before they fall from the trees? Man that's the closest you get to Autumn, and you don't get the pretty colors.

Yeh, well you can't eat leaves or snow, but you can make gourmet food from iguanas:
    Iguana tacos
This recipe is inspired by the invasive green iguana population in South Florida. It calls for deboned iguana meat, lime juice, garlic powder, and other seasonings. You can serve the tacos with toppings like avocado, sour cream, and salsa.
    Fried iguana
This recipe uses black spin-tailed iguana meat, lime, cilantro, salt, and pepper. You can grill or broil the iguana until cooked through, then cover it with lime juice and cilantro.
Iguana hominy stewThis recipe is part of a blog post from Kern's department, which warns amateur chefs to prepare properly to avoid the risk of E coli and salmonella.

Please read the last few words carefully!!!!!!! :D

I just use the dealer while under warranty. Easier, since often there is something to take care of under that (or a recall), plus I want them to be the only ones to touch it just in case!

besides, for the first few years it is just an oil change and rotation for the most part, and in general the dealer is price competitive enough on those to not make me change.

service guy came out today to fix our fireplace. I don't feel as incompetent because it took him a good 10 minutes to figure out how to get the front screen off of it to get at the controls (and he installs the units!) Once he go into the controls it still took some fiddling and he was not happy with how it lit when he relit the pilot. after some more futzing, he discovered that one of the "stones" they put in there was somehow blocking the pilot. he moved that and said it was working like it should. Then it was quite the ordeal to get it back together.

considering this was a warranty call set-up by the builder, it was money well spent!

Dealers are making less money selling cars and more servicing them.....so they are trying to make more from every service customer. My dealer used to be more honest, but now I have a greeter who takes me to the service rep and they all try to find things they can tell me I need. The indie guy gave me a list of things that should be done at this mileage level....I said next time. That was it.

Walmart Canada has a terrible website when it comes to dealing with your credit card account. A few weeks ago with Canada Post being on strike I had to find out what I owed so I could make a payment. It took some hunting but I finally found how to access it. My PC didn’t have login credentials saved and I had no memory of ever having done so, but when I tried setting up a new login it said I was already registered, which I found odd. Long story short, I ended up going around in circles for so long I had to call them to help me log in 3 times. Every time, I had to endure a sales pitch from the agent at the end of the call to buy some identity protection coverage. I was always polite but cut off agent #2 after about 60 seconds and #3 after about 15. They are squeezing out every penny they can.

The two grandsons were here over Thanksgiving. The day before they went home, they wanted to do a craft. The 4-year-olds wasn't dry before they had to leave so I mailed it on Monday.

I live in central Pennsylvania and they live in eastern Maryland.

I checked its travel history on USPS.com just for giggles. First it went to Warrendale, PA (northwest of Pittsburgh) which seemed odd. It was going the wrong way, but I figured they knew what they are doing.

Now it's in Kansas City, KS. :|

Don’t be so quick to blame the USPS for stupidity. More than likely when they scanned the package to determine its weight for your mailing charge they detected what it was. So, to be sure it didn’t soften up, they sent it on a route that would insure it would freeze enough so as to arrive at its destination intact. Possible?

I saw somewhere that it was 52 below (F) in Fairbanks sometime in the last few days. Is that for real? The coldest I ever had to deal with was 46 below or so in Edmonton, but that was fifty years ago, and I was much better able to endure such madness in my 20s than I am now. Either way, hang in there.

Did anyone watch Senna on Netflix? It is obviously a Brazilian film that has been dubbed. I thought that it is pretty well done with some actual race scenes and news footage mixed in.

They used to call in us hardy volunteers at 4 am to start the diesel buses when it got down around minus 20. No matter how warmly I dressed I could only start and snow broom 3 or 4 buses before I had to go inside to warm up. The person who designed snow brooms with aluminum poles must have lived in Florida because they would suck the heat out of your hands right through your gloves and give you frostbite.

A bit long, but interesting. Look at the size of that crankshaft! And how thinking has changed, from big to small. https://youtu.be/hhsz1Char_c?si=F7ONlzDJTu7wiv-6

I think that the coldest weather we saw on the Alcan back in 2000 was 30 below. In 1994 a heavy ice/snow storm hit KY and we saw 23 below at my house. That was the incident that convinced my wife and I that we would not go another winter without a 4X4 that had true off-road capability.

Skiing Okemo, VT Valentine's Day 1987(?) with a buddy. Mountain basically empty as it was -9 at the base, with wind gusts at the top -30ish (IIRC, of course. But not too far off). We'd ski for an hour or so, doing frostbite checks, duck into the lodge to warm up a bit. I think we had fun...

Meanwhile, back at the ski house, no one else went out, started their cars. Dead battery a go go. My car (Mitsu Mirage Turbo) was okey dokey.

Years later, the boy and I wanted to ski Wildcat, 0 at the base, -9 at the summit. Wife nixed that, shame I think the boy would have loved Wildcat. So, we went to Attitash, think the temps were 20+ degrees warmer.

The things we do for love (of skiing).
