@corvette 3 jalapeno cheeseburgers and a sack of fries..

They have amazing old-fashioned crinkle cut fries. They used to have a drive-thru only location about a mile from me, but it closed up. Now, it's about 2.5 miles to the Newport location.

I don't partake much, any more, but I'm pretty sure my lifetime number is well over 1000 burgers..

The White Castle you referenced holds a particular memory. The (then) wife had polished off a bottle of red wine at a friend's house. We were on our way home and she decided she wanted some White Castle. Don't know why, as there were hors d'oeuvres she had been gobbling on all night at the party.

Anyway, I'm nothing if not a person who wants to make my significant other happy. Went through the drive thru. She tore into them after I handed her the sack. We had barely hit I-75N when, you guessed it, the heaving started.

Spent a good portion of the early a.m. hours cleaning up that mess, heaving myself from the smell.

    Good times!!!!
I was catching up on posts over the past several weeks and noticed mention of WHITE CASTLE. That brings back fond memories of the White Castle at the corner of Queens Boulevard and 43rd Street in Sunnyside, Long Island, that was our favorite fast food stop over - especially when coming home from a very late date in the wee hours of the morning - we would stop in to pick up a "sack" of their hamburgers which were about 12 cents each at the time of my earliest memories. There is absolutely no better tasting hamburger with onions and fats on the face of the earth. I prefer their cheeseburgers. I think that's what caused my heart arteries to clog and cause me misery over the past 8-10 months after the open heart surgery I went through.

There was a group of us guys and gals (about 30 of us) and we would do everything together including volunteering at the retirement home for Vets and to participate in giving back to our community. But one thing we truly all looked forward to was after out Saturday night parties at one house or another, we would all, en masse, siege the White Castle and pick up about 100 or so cheeseburgers and beer and or Cokes, and take them back to the party. The amountt of meat in the sandwich was negligible as was the amount of cheese, but that taste, especially at 2:00 AM in the morning, was exquisite.

Down here in south Florida, we do not have any White Castle Hamburger restaurants, but most super markets, BJ's, Walmart, etc., sell frozen White Castle's in small, medium and large boxes. The taste of the cheeseburgers leaves much to be desired when comparing them to what I remember as fresh, but at least I have managed to microwave them properly on medium heat for a bit longer time rather than high for a shorter time. These cheeseburgers run about a dollar a piece - quite a difference from 65 years ago.

But, White Castle sure brings back some great memories!!!

I used to travel to Montreal regularly for work for weeks at a time. I parked my rental near a Metro station, since it was easier than waiting for the hotel to fetch the car, plus which the hotel (valet) parking cost a fortune and was generally a pain; the Metro ride from the Hochelaga station to McGill was quick and painless. Anyway, I was there a lot in the winter, and one trip it snowed every other day for about a week, and it was a significant amount each time. In my experience, there isn't another city anywhere that does a better job of clearing snow, including the sidewalks. It was colder in Edmonton, but snowed less -- they did pretty well too.

    It's all relative.

Not a White Castle story but a drunk girlfriend story. After a law school party I was taking said girlfriend home. At a red light she announced, “I’m going to pour out the rest of my drink.” She proceeded to open the door, pour out her drink and fall completely out of the car. I had to run around, pour her back into the car and slam her door- all before the light changed.

this was a bad storm. Not a huge accumulation, but it started as snow, and had some mix and rain earlier, then back to snow. And next few days will be extremely cold. So going to be a lot of ice issues. I'm just trying to get rid of the slush tonight and hopefully not much skim ice tomorrow to throw rock salt onto. Glad I got that because Friday I was clearing the thursday night wet stuff and there was some ice where the road meets the driveway (drainage issue there that needs to get fixed in the spring) and I went down. Thought I broke something in my hand or wrist, and almost went to the ortho urgent care. Thankfully it feels better now so must have just jammed it hard. Cracked my knee but that was just a bruise.

Came out OK for a geezer. But I am over this winter nonsense. I chatted with the plow guy that does our road and driveways and even he said he is tired of it, and would rather not have to be doing it.

got ambitious and finished my taxes today. Hopefully someone is left in the office to send me my refund. I give it about 50/50 odds that shows up anywhere near the normal timeframe. But another sign I am getting old, I had questions pop up for the first time questioning if I am getting SS yet since I am now old enough. Almost wish I was doing that instead of working.

I get pop-ups too every now and then when I push the envelope, like - “this deduction is not typical for your income. Do you want to proceed with this deduction”? I wish the tax program was interactive so I could ask, “what are my chances of getting away with it?”

Now that would be an upgrade program worth paying extra for rather than just leaving you hanging with a question. :'(

with the rules now capping local/state taxes I am getting the standard deduction anyway. Not coming close to any of the esoteric stand alone add-on ones.

@stickguy - I have taken the standard deduction, as well, the past few years, since it increased a lot. I hit the trifecta this year and owe money to the feds and two states, so I'll not be filing until April 15. Thankfully, all three checks will be under $100, so my withholding is pretty accurate.

@abacomike and others - White Castle #12 was in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville, near a bus stop, and its last day open was December 21, 1988. A local filmographer showed up to document the goodbyes. Small world, that space is now a Valvoline Instant Oil Change and is within a stone's throw of my best friend's house:

Since there was probably plenty of oil and grease there I guess all they had to do was install a couple lifts.

We didn't get the anticipated switch to rain or sleet, so the forecast of 8-10" of snow turned into 14" or 16". I had to plow my 1/4 mile long driveway twice yesterday and the 50 mph winds today will make the drift snow fill it back in. Ugh......

First of all, glad you're feeling like nothing is broken. Just another reason to hate winter.

We got the exact same weather up here in Nova Scotia. The Thursday one was bad enough and I was helpless to do much on my own given my two bad knees and heart issues. I am at enough risk of falling on a nice day and walking on ice is tempting fate too much. After realizing I was marooned in the house on Friday thank goodness my neighbor took pity on me and decided to help out when my snow-clearing guy failed to show up. Then I woke up overnight to the same thing all over again - I think the wind acted as a 5AM alarm clock. All the work done on Sunday to clear my driveway and front path was for naught as it was again covered in ice nastiness. This time my snow guy decided to show though he and his son took a very long time to get it clear. Right now the temps are in the high 30's F so the last of the precip is liquid and thanks to the ground being frozen is forming a pool at the garage end of my walkway where it slopes down, something I will have to get fixed this year.

I went out last night to move the latest 1/4-1/2 inch of slushy snow so it would not freeze. Then this morning back out to clear snow drifts, while trying not to slip on the base layer of (thankfully somewhat bumpy) ice. The road that leads to our actual driveway (a private shared road for 4 houses that the town does not take care of so does not have the salt treatment) is pretty much all ice too but nothing i can do about that.

once I had the snow off I threw down the rest of the 5 gallon bucket of rock salt (probably 25+ pounds) over the whole driveway. Hopefully that gives some traction until it finally warms up or gets sunny enough to clear it off. Based on the weather forecast, that might be next Sunday.

but hey, who doesn't want to be outside shoveling a icy driveway when it is in the mid-teens with winds kicking up to 30+ with snow blowing sideways at you? Not new snow, just blowing off the lawn. Living the dream, baby!

I promise not to complain in the summer if my grass survives this mess and I have to go out 2x a week to mow it! At least for the first couple of times.

Filed on Friday (turbotax) and had notification that my federal return was accepted 90 minutes later.
The next day, notification that my state return had been accepted.

No refund, this year, but generally, the federal refund has always come in less than two weeks.

thinking about it. Might need to get divorced first though to get the wife to do it again. Unless her arthritic knees get worse and she really can't deal with the stairs!

the nice thing about the private road is no through traffic. Only traffic that will ever go past my house are the people in the 2 houses past me. And the daily allotment of Fed Ex, Amazon and UPS trucks of course. The road is really a long shared driveway, that just happened to be built to road standards. Only hassle is needing to get it plowed but split 4 ways, in a normal year (as in, not this year) it is not very much money for each of us. Bonus is I get my fairly large driveway plowed also for only $25 more. A true bargain.

I stopped by a Nissan dealer this evening on my way home to check out the Sentra. Immediately I’m greeted by a green pea who asks if I have an appointment or if I have spoken with anyone at the dealership. When I say no, he asks what he can help me with.

I introduce myself and he asks me for a copy of my license so he can scan it into their system. That’s a hard no. I dictate to him my name, address, and cell phone number.

I tell him I’m interested in leasing a Sentra SV with climate package. He leads me towards a fully loaded SR model. The interior was very nicely appointed, but had bigger wheels with smaller sidewalls than I’d prefer. It also had a $29K sticker price which is a lot more than I’m willing to spend on something not manufactured by Toyota.

The front had a surprising amount of leg room. I moved the seat pretty far forward to get comfortable. I sat in the back after adjusting the seat for my 5’ 10” frame and there was a nice amount of legroom. Headroom in the back is tight. I couldn’t sit up straight without touching the headliner. Maybe I’m not used to a regular car, but I swear this thing was as low as my Prelude.

He asks me if I’d like to check out an SV on the lot. Asks if I have a particular color in mind. I tell him it doesn’t matter at this point, just grab something that is accessible.

He grabs the keys to an SV. Tells me he wants to introduce me to the finance manager after the test drive so he can explain the options to me. I said to him; “ Let me guess? Firm handshake? Big smile? Nice suit?”

Asks to take a copy of my license which I say sure, just shred it afterwards. He fires up the car, pulls it out and then sees there is a CRV blocking its path. He tells me to get comfortable and he’ll have the CrV moved and be right back. I waited a solid 5-6 minutes, got out of the car and told him I can’t wait any longer. I asked for his card, he said he doesn’t have one , but asks me to put his cell number in my phone.

@nyccarguy - ugh, that sounds painful. At this point, just test drive one at CarMax or some other no-pressure place, and if it meets your needs, find a broker on LH to eliminate the dealer shenanigans.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,814
I miss a couple of my regular dealers back in Jersey, that were low pressure, no shenanigans, just a quick copy the license, hand me the keys, and go test drive. Even a few that required going along were not a big deal, but that go by yourself ones were the best!

I feel your trepidation at giving your license. Who knows what shenanigans they are going to do with it. I assume in addition to validating your identity they are running credit checks and such to prepare the full F&I onslaught. But there’s also the potential for obnoxious marketing. The Honda dealer sent me birthday greetings 3 months later as an excuse to promote various deals. I told them I didn’t appreciate them using private information off my license in their sales effort.

Someone down the street put a fridge on the curb for pickup.
They moved in in 2021. The fridge is a Samsung.

Speaking of refrigerators, we bought a very off-brand small-ish fridge for our garage when we moved into our house in May of 2018.

We've always had problems with temperature control, both in the fridge and freezer compartments.

When the weather gets very cold (0 F), the sodas (pop?) in the fridge freeze and explode, making an awful mess.

Happened again over the long weekend, and the wife is talking replacement....

That doesn’t sound like you have a fridge that is acceptable for placement in a garage. That’s seems to be a new thing that exists now.

We bought one last year and I learned all about garage ready. Normal fridges Are only rated for about 55 degrees on the low side. The garage ready LG we got is supposed to be good to 38.

I don't think that is the fault of the refrigerator. They're supposed to keep things cold, not regulate both up and down!

Isn't your garage attached to the house, though? Seems odd to me that it would get that cold inside unless the overhead door is open for long periods. I think I would hate to have an attached garage that was unheated (or, at least, unheatable). Even if just a small forced air unit that kept the minimum temperature at 40F.

Yup. As above, garage fridges are specific. More insulation and, I believe, separate sensors and coolant feeds for freezer vs fridge. I have the same issues with the cheap fridge/freezer I bought for our garage. When it is too cold, the fridge freezers and the freezer defrosts. Reason being the one temp sensor is in the fridge, so it sees the fridge is too cold and doesn’t run enough to keep the freezer frozen. Meanwhile, sitting idle lets the fridge freeze. Solution is to either replace with correct type OR trick the fridge. There are a few ways to do this. You can either buy a heating element that warms the sensor in the fridge or you can rig the lightbulb and put it on timer. Believe it or not, that little bulb warms up the sensor quite a bit. If it is on all the time, the fridge will run too much. Freezer stays frozen but won’t stop the fridge from freezing. I haven’t bothered getting too crazy and just have a habit now of pulling the door switch out so the light won’t go off. I leave it that way for a day or so and put it back for a day or so. On and off like that is pretty effective.

@xwesx - that is awesome! The combo of the Quattro, the diesel, & the chains make it look like child’s play.

Yes, it was. At least, I certainly had a fun time that evening!

Thanks, everyone, for the constructive feedback. If we decide to go forward, then we'll look for one that is garage compatible.

(and yes, we too have noticed the freezer defrosts at times, which is why we stopped using it a year or two ago)

I bought a cheap fridge/freezer for my garage a number of years ago. I bought this kit to make it garage ready. Something like this that was simple to install

    Oh, that's very interesting!

I actually have a problem with my side by side refrigerator in the garage of the Ohio house freezing stuff in the cool side during the summer months because it is too warm outside of the unit! The freezer is fine, but it pushes so much cold air into the other side that anything on the top shelf tends to freeze. I ended up freezing a watermelon that way (totally by accident). However, the rest of the space is perfectly fine. I guess it absorbs enough heat from the often-100-plus-degrees air around it that it just has the transfer fan running full tilt, keeping the intake area at the top of the compartment way too cold. I generally place four gallons of water on that top shelf to let it freeze and help reduce the temperature fluctuations.

Yes, that’s the heating element I was referring to. Had no idea Home Depot has it.

Same problem opposite direction in the summer.

Around here heated garages are not the norm. But I would not mind one. Mine is pretty well insulated so even when very cold out (single digits low tens) it hangs around 40 on the inside wall where the fridge is.

I’ve been lucky with our garage fridge. Only once when we had the cold spell did anything freeze inside. Freezer was fine.

I have it on the interior wall as far from the door as possible

I have a regular size fridge with top freezer in the garage.
It works reasonably well and is at least partially on an inside wall.
