    Grandkids(3, 5 1/2) were over this afternoon.
They were amp'ed up to say the least.
Immediately went down to the basement to drive their battery powered Mustangs.
Crashed into each other and other things(put a dent in the water heater) multiple times.
We couldn't get them to do anything for any length of time.
One of them was doing great at Hungry Hungey Hippo's but as soon as they started losing tipped the game over every time my wife set it up again.
They moved into the main area of the house and were screaming and jumping all over the furniture and each other(multiple crying episodes).
Put Paw Patrol on the TV and things immediately calmed down.
Wife convinced them go to the playground.
It was darn cold out there(5 degrees wind chill) but we were out there for an hour with them screaming just about the whole time.
Finally, one of them tapped out because they were cold.
Older one went running up the street oblivious of my requests to wait, you never know when someone is going to back out of their driveway or something similar.
All of a sudden the older one stops, turns around and says "Why is that red truck in your driveway?"
A minute later, the younger one catches up and says "Red truck, red truck".
An hour later their dad comes over for inner and after a while says "What is that truck in your driveway?"
Now just about everyone knows I have a new truck.
Overall, hopefully Paw Patrol will not be one of the USA/Canada import/export casualties. :p

a 360-surround view camera is actually something I want on my next car. Having seen it demo'd it is really cool and could be very useful, especially on the truck. Even just a front camera would be a big improvement.

I would also like a heads-up display. Have never had that either.

The 360 cam was probably the coolest tech thing on that EX35 I had for a short time.

So I am fairly certain I have been given a green light to make a purchase.

Took the truck out today for the first time in a while. Wife was complaining about the ride, as she is apt to do. And she said “what are you thinking about replacing it with?”

Went through some of my thought process and, at one point, she said, “why concern yourself about towing capacity? If it has 4000 lb limit, for example, then just use the van for those instances when you need more.” (I’m paraphrasing the confusing wife-speak that contained this sentiment.) hmmm… not a bad idea. As long as I don’t HAVE to always tow with the van, because that is just so massive with a trailer attached.

In the convo, one thing she said was, “how about a Bronco?” I explained that’s still like $40k used. She said, “Oh. So you’d have to get rid of like everything else.” At least she understands the man-math involved here. A for effort.

Is that her subtle way of saying get rid of everything else? lol

Looked up the towing capacity of my truck, 9300 to 9600 depending on CGVWR.
Payload is 1978 lbs which is pretty good for a 1/2 ton.
With Max Tow, which includes a 3.73 rear gear(mine has a 3.31), towing limit is about 1,000 lbs higher.

Mine only has a tow rating of 5500 to 6000 depending on what source you look at. It came with the tow package so 3:73 gears but since I don’t tow anything it’s irrelevant except that it makes for some fun acceleration.

I just took the snow tires off since inspection was due and I didn’t want to make two trips. That will probably guarantee two feet of snow in mid March.

    @oldfarmer50,
I watched a video today where it was noted that the Coyote in the Mustang and the F-150 have different firing orders.
Firing order in the Mustang is more for horsepower and in the F-150 is more torque oriented.
The Mustang does beat the F-150 in absolute numbers.

Advice sought - not sure how many here keep a car long enough to need tire replacement. I will be switching the winter tires out for the wagon in a few weeks, and I need to replace at least two of the normal/all-season tires, as last year I had damage on an inner sidewall resulting in a slow leak that can't be repaired. The tires are original to the car, 2018 date code, no visible rot or similar as I keep the tires conditioned and the car is garaged. The tires have maybe 30K miles on them, 5mm tread depth, which is apparently still acceptable. Would you replace them all or just the two it needs, and wait for the others?

    @fintail,
Are all the tires the same size? Is your wagon AWD?

@fintail - with a 2018 date code, I'd replace all four. Replacement is generally recommended after six, and they're toast after ten years, regardless of tread depth.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,224

    @fintail,
Are all the tires the same size? Is your wagon AWD?

Yes, AWD and all the same size. It was recommended to me that I replace at least the rear two (as one of the rears has the damage), but at that level of wear and a little age, I was wondering if I would should do all 4.

Aside from fintail tires, I haven't bought tires since I had the E55 AMG, which had staggered wheels - 20K mile tire life.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,114
@fintail - Tire Rack has the best tire reviews. Input your size and look for the highest rated tires that fit your application. (I also look at the cheapest ones, too, since there's always a chance of finding a diamond in the rough.)

Oh yeah, I already am pretty sure I know what tires I will get (OEM type, they are rated well and had no issues). I was more concerned with the age and wear and if one should replace them all, as the other two will be a bit older and more worn. On MB AWD, only two tires need to be replaced - I think some others might require all four.

My local dealer is relatively competitive in price once installation is figured in, and as they already have the stock wheels (as I run winter tires on their own wheels, they will switch and store for a nominal fee), I can have the tires installed on the wheels and waiting when I have the car in for annual service in a few weeks.

I really thought I would zero in on a Macan, but then I was reading that the PDK in the Macan may not be a PDK. There is a great deal on conflicting info on this. I read in a couple of places they believe it to be a DSG, which would rule that vehicle out for me. The reason this even came up is because there is a Macan for sale, traded into a Porsche dealer, where it has a bad trans temp sensor and they would rather sell it as is than fix it, so it got me researching.

I think my wife might be getting interested in an upgrade. I keep dropping new features to intrigue her (not that she would know how to use them). She did like our daughter's new car that we saw this weekend. So I need to find something she will actually like and find comfortable and be willing to drive, that is also something I want to drive. Another compact CUV makes no sense (well, maybe a Mecan!)

in the spring, she will be so stir crazy and anxious to get out of the house that spending a Saturday out with a few dealer stops might be an easy sell!

Kind of curious what she might find interesting. A WRX and GTI, I want to see. Maybe a nice EV (one of the Kia or Hyundai ones?) A BMW? Not really all that much out there these days really since I don't see us getting a real sports car (too low and cramped).

The usual research list dysfunction applies of course. WRX, GTI, Integra, Ranger Raptor, EV6. Pretty much the same things!

I would consider a BMW 3 series or C class MB. Or a Volvo S60 (those still a thing?) Kinda a "sporty" car!

She does trot out the old "we don't need to spend money on that" comeback. Though we certainly can spend money on that (need to spend it on something!)

Ditto. My GLI had a DSG, and it was great in that application (sport sedan). My mom's Q5 has a DSG. I've driven it extensively, and the DSG is a dealbreaker for me. It hesitates and is in the wrong gear too much of the time. All Audi had to do in this segment was make a fancy Honda CR-V, and they get to charge nearly double for it. Nicer interior/infotainment, pano roof, a tick faster, it's very nice! #borat And then the DSG is complete garbage. I'd risk doing a tune on a CR-V to get the extra oomph.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 52,907
at the risk of getting flamed, given the familial relationship, I always assumed that the Porsche PDK was basically just the Audi DSG. And Corvette, I would bet that the difference is all in the software. Maybe can get the Q5 tuned to make it work better.

Fin, add me to the list of recommending just getting all 4 tires. That is past the point in years and tread ware that I would be comfortable with it. Maybe if you were struggling to feed the family but probably would not be driving a MB wagon if so!

With AWD, there is no way I’d run half the tread depth on one axle vs the other.

it is the same unit in different models. And they tune them as they see fit in different applications. So it is doing it that way for a reason, either because they want it to function like that, or sometimes because the trans isn't able to handle the weight maybe so they have to build in a delay?

It depends on the down payment. When I had car payments I never had one more than $320 and when I had a mortgage the highest was $580.

FWIW, since we’re talking tires, about a month ago I bought 4 Michelin tires at Tire Rack that cost a tick over $1,200 with tax but before mounting and balancing.
