Glass breakage has zero deductible in KY. It's a comprehensive claim, and doesn't hit your insurance.

Where does the spot fall on the windshield?

My friend and I have had an argument for about 15 years whether to cut a muffin straight down into two halves (my way) or to cut horizontally below the top (his way).
I think 2 equal halves because if you are going to toast the muffin, you want it to toast equally.
Also, if you add butter it will be equally distributed.

@benjaminh I hear insurance does pay to replace windshields in Florida.
Just my worthless opinion but I would call or talk to Safelite. I have been really pleased with them. If it can be filled in they will do it for a little over $100. That will leave a mark, it isn't perfect. If you don't like the result you can apply that cost to the price of a replacement windshield. In my case Safelite would fill out the proper documents and submit them to my insurance company. Windshield replacement should be done by a pro - lots of electronics in windshields these days.
One friend had his windshield replaced by an indie garage and he found there was distortion....evidently there are cheap windshields being imported by some companies.
Safelite said you can get windshields filled about 3 times, after that it should be replaced, it is important for the structure of the car.
....and that is all I know.....(about windshield holes)

I would go to a professional shop especially since it is a comprehensive claim with $0 deductible. Then if it can’t be repaired or is repaired and is in your line of view, they can replace the windshield.

@kyfdx nailed it. I'm not a big fan of Safelite. If you don't already have a preferred glass shop, I've had really good luck with Rite-Way Auto Glass. They've replaced several windshields for me.

I had a bullseye like that filled once on my Accord. Took one look at the result and knew it would bother me every time I drove the car so told the glass place to replace it. Same deal, they applied the repair charge to the replacement cost so no risk to me. And in NJ you pay for your own windshields (I have never had one done that insurance paid for. 3 I think, including one on my daughters car).

FWIW, I’ve only seen an English muffin cut one way, horizontally between the top and the bottom. Like I said before the trick is trying to figure out the top from the bottom but once I solve that, it’s easy peasy.

the flat side with the speckles is the bottom, the curvy part is the top.

and that is the only way to cut it. Vertically like a dinner roll makes no sense.

When you see how they fill and cure the area of the chip at a professional shop, you’ll know why the DIY kit is not going to work.

Also, if after attempting to fix it yourself, if it then cracks and needs replacement, who knows where the insurance company will assign the blame?

You can change your comprehensive deductible in NJ independent of collision deductible. So I carry $100 on comp specifically in case of windshield damage.

I don't recall what my comp limit was when I was in NJ but I assume $500 or $1000. at least the windshields were pretty cheap. No clue what I have now that I live in NY, and I hope to never find out the hard way!

Any damage on the rest of the car? That type of glass damage, given the depth of the pock mark probably means replacement.

It may be able to be repaired(filled with resin).
The glass place should be able to tell you.
They do make DIY repair kits.

A muffin with a crown should get cut down the center, top to bottom. Otherwise you end up with a top and a stump.

Had good luck with the Rain-X repair kit from Walmart on the Prius (bought it with a chip, and didn't have comprehensive or collision).

My experience with small windshield "issues" is that they can usually be dealt with by using a proprietary system involving a vacuum device and resin of some sort which is introduced in such a way as it fills the cracks.

Worked well for me, and seems to work for many/most people. I think the rule is that if the crack (or whatever) can be covered by a banknote it'll work. Insurance companies love it, since it eliminates the need for windshield replacement -- around here they'll cover the cost even if you don't have full (zero deductible) glass coverage.

they can be filled but you can still see it. not a huge deal if off in a low corner on the passenger side, but anywhere in the driver's line of sight can be very annoying. At least in my experience!

I had a smaller chip in the truck windshield fixed for $125 at a local glass place. Walmart sells a repair kit for under $20 but I’ve had inconsistent luck with self repair. I don’t like to turn minor things into insurance because you’ll pay more in higher rates.

Our C250 is a 2014 but it was made in 2013. Does that mean it is 11 years old or 12 years old?
Which sounds better?

Selling it? I don’t know, I don’t drive it enough to justify the increasing insurance costs. Less than 19k miles after 10 years.

It all depends on which insurance company you are covered by. I live in Florida and had to replace a windshield on my 2017 BMW and my 2018 Mercedes S450 and I had no deductible ($0.00) with Allstate and Liberty Mutual.

My current carrier is State Farm and my policy specifically states that I have a $500 deductible on windshield glass and a $500 deductible on all other losses.

I have had that done with varying degrees of success. As stick said, sometimes they are still an annoyance if in the line of sight. Looking at @benjaminh 's photo, I would be dubious even with the vacuum system since it shows cracks radiating out from the center for some distance already. Odds are they will only get worse. I would also advise forgetting about the DIY stuff. That will not work on a thing like that. Take it to an auto glass shop and see what they say.

Insurance: @benjaminh is in KY. All comprehensive insurance coverage in KY is $0 deductible for glass breakage, by statute.

I know it's a picture, but that looks like a major chip to me. I'll guess the windshield is going to be replaced, if the view behind it from the driver's seat is anything but the hood of the car.

My previous carrier contracted out glass claims to Safelite Solutions. It was pretty comical to hear their rep read the standard script about "we'll waive your deductible if you'll let us attempt to repair it first."

If you’ve been with the same insurance company for a given period of time, you might have “first time accident forgiveness”. A lot of insurance companies used to tout that and I know I had it at one time but I doubt that is a thing anymore.

I had the glass on my Q7 repaired twice in the past, as it is very prone to dings, but fairly resistant to cracks! The third time I took it in, I think I had about ten or eleven pocks to fix, and they said that it was probably time to just replace it. Well, that was around $1,300 at that time, and I didn't figure it was bad enough to warrant replacement yet, so I've just let it go since then. Today, it has three cracks that are running, though all in places that don't even come close to the driver's line of sight. So, it has a little time yet (probably next summer - 2026, unless the cracks accelerate).

But, considering that the car has nearly 155,000 miles and is, shockingly, about 12 years old (on the road), I'd say that original glass held up pretty well! I know better than to think any replacement glass will come anywhere close to that.

I use the at-home kits sometimes (if it is a large pock and is the only one, as usually the majority cost at a shop is for the first one.... additional fills are pennies on the dollar). The one draw back I see is that the spots are much more visible than the shop repairs. They seem to work, but they don't look all that much different than pre-repair. If I had glass damage due to something like a tree falling, I would do a comprehensive claim. For normal rock chip windshield damage, I look at that as normal wear and tear, and I pay for it out of pocket. It would be like requesting the insurance company to replace my tires because they wore down.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and information!

We might regret it, but we used the kit from O'Reilley's and it seemed to work well. Spot is pretty much invisible now. But there's a chance we'll regret it. We were in a rush, because the next generation had a long-planned camping trip that they started today and they're borrowing our Outback for it, which also now has a hitch installed for a bike rack. Anyway, they are off on their trip today and we'll see how it goes.

And probably this was already clear, but the damage didn't go all the way through. It was just the top layer of the windshield that had that little spot. The inside layer of the windshield seemed fine.

@benjaminh Eh. Yours was pretty much a no-risk approach, as the kit was cheap to buy and easy to use. If it doesn't work, then the other option (replacement) is still on the table.

Also, I don't know how familiar you are with Subaru hitches/towing, but the cars come with a pre-wired receiving plug for 4-pin wiring harnesses. If you need lights for some reason (either for trailer or for bulky racks/trays), it is a quick plug-and-play process to be ready to go. Kits from places like eTrailer are flawless and inexpensive. Once installed, they just tuck away under the cargo floor.

Wow! That still left the question of "why" hanging, but certainly somewhat unique! It seems like most old Victorians like that are cut in half... just not literally. They are partitioned up on the inside and turned into 2-4 apartments, then left to rot as the owners collect rent on them until they fall down around the chimney....

Sounds good. I don't think cream cheese would go with blueberries but it would set off the banana nut muffins. I would cut my muffin the same way....vertically and have two equal halves.

My friend and I have had an argument for about 15 years whether to cut a muffin straight down into two halves (my way) or to cut horizontally below the top (his way).
I think 2 equal halves because if you are going to toast the muffin, you want it to toast equally.
Also, if you add butter it will be equally distributed.

FWIW, I’ve only seen an English muffin cut one way, horizontally between the top and the bottom. Like I said before the trick is trying to figure out the top from the bottom but once I solve that, it’s easy peasy.

Like @stickguy said, cut it top to bottom so that you have a top and bottom on each half. Only dopes would do it otherwise. FWIW, I take my blueberry muffins straight but I put cream cheese on my banana nut muffins.

Sounds good. I don't think cream cheese would go with blueberries but it would set off the banana nut muffins. I would cut my muffin the same way....vertically and have two equal halves.

We took the C43 to Charlotte for the weekend to visit our son (and attend the ACC tournament). This is the data from the trip home. Most of the time I was able to cruise at 75-80 mph, but a couple of minor traffic jams cut the average speed down considerably.
