Oddly, the new Win11 PC seems to be working better than the 5 y-o one that came with W10 and took the upgrade a year or so ago. Not a speed issue; the new one just seems smoother and less finicky. Accomplished two things today; paid a bill on it using online banking without a hitch, and got my printer to work wirelessly with it, which was a bit finicky and sluggish to set up but worked eventually.

@kyfdx @benjaminh @roadburner - the Love's in Sparta is getting a DC fast charge station soon, which fills in a pretty significant gap about halfway between Cinci and the 'ville.

Well, this is fun. Posting from the hospital because it is midnight and it is highly unlikely I’ll be sleeping tonight.
Earlier today, I was up on a ladder trying to adjust a garage door opener. It was the big garage where they are 12 feet up.
I don’t know what the heck happened but the ladder tipped over. Did my damndest to land somewhere safe but didn’t win. Although I suppose it could have been worse. Landed on the ladder back first. Long story short, I have multiple fractures in my left scapula and 2 busted ribs. Sending me home tomorrow after a follow up X-ray to make sure my left lung remains inflated. So, yeah. I was scheduled to get get my motorcycle license mid Sept with my son. Guess that’s off the table.

oh man Q, that sucks. Sounds like it could have been worse. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

I really don't like ladders much, and my wife hates me on them even more. Back in Jersey I occasionally had to get out the extension ladder to get up to the gutters (so maybe 20' up) and of course the ladder was a little short, so I was higher than safe and reaching up. Her job was to hold the bottom and call 911 if I fell.

at least it was on the lawn so if I went down I was landing in a bush or grass.

They’re first generation golden doodles. The mom was a standard poodle parti and the dad a golden retriever. Great dogs, smart, playful, silly. They are great travelers. Until recently they always went with us on vacation. The smaller one on the left has to wear a diaper when she is in the house, but fine otherwise. Hard to believe they will be 12 on Nov 2. Fun fact, my wife, daughter, dogs and me were born on a Saturday. That explains my aversion to work.

I am very familiar with the cone. A miserable experience for all. Recently one of our dogs had to have a toe removed because of cancer. When I could I sit in the den and have the dog in my view, I would take the cone off for relief and called it the “No cone zone”. Hope your pup heals quickly.

Thanks. I’ve been doing the same thing- leaving the cone off when I can watch him. A friend has a GSD and that dog would take the cone off in under 30 seconds.

There are programs that will transfer most if not all programs and data from your old computer to your new one.

I saw the software touted by EaseUS but it wasn’t the thing you were discussing as it was supposedly free. However I was unsure about exactly what it did and how because the webpage didn’t inspire a lot of confidence, to be frank. It was all supposed to work automagically but I could find no online references to it saying it worked, which I would have expected.

A deeper dive into the migration process just confused me further. Some talked about needing a special cable to connect the two machines like it was 25 years ago. Some said there was no way to move installed programs from old machine to new, while others implied there was without saying how to do it. Nothing gave a clear path to follow. This is what I suspected from first looking into the issue months ago. You would think there would be a simple MS tool, but this is Windows of course where nothing is simple.
I saw a video someone had made claiming EaseUS PC Transfer was free. It is free to download, which many software makers often state. The basic program license will transfer 2 GB (IIRC) for free.
The regular licensing is for 2 pcs to connect to each other . Period. Then there's a lifetime license that is transferable to 2 other pcs, and more, as long as it's deleted from the earlier 2 pcs (just like MS Office).

From reading it seems PC Trans is better at finding all the programs and transferring them and installing as needed like the original on old pc. PC Trans also lets you choose what data and programs you want it to transfer. It transfers over your WIFI, as one choice of modes. My WIFI is fast enough. PC Trans also can transfer even faster over the older Cat5 reversing cable which goes directly pc to pc.

My hope is it will bring the license for my version of Office, which doesn't show up in my MS info.
That is one of the reasons the wife and I got hooked on chromebooks a few years back. Does most everything we need a computer for. When you buy a new one just sit it beside your old one push one button and presto it is all transferred. We also have ipads that transfer the same way and are great to read ebooks on. Still a couple of pc's lying around that never get used.

Seems like that anti EV crowd just gets obsessed with range anxiety scenarios. And ignores all the benefits (the reasons so many people buy and love their EVs). Of course like any other vehicle option your specific needs will make some options not good for you. If I lived in an old city I would not want a dually F250. But if I towed a horse trailer I would.

Sorry, but you will have to jump up to an F350 to get a dually. AI Overview

"The Ford F-250 Super Duty does not come with a dual-rear-wheel (DRW) or "dually" configuration. While the F-250 is a heavy-duty truck, the DRW option is exclusive to the F-350 and higher models like the F-450 and F-550."

I agree that many vehicles are for specific purposes. I have a Ram 2500, but do tow a 30' Airstream with it. I rarely drive it in the good weather because that's what the Miata is for. I don't think that I have put 500 miles on it since April when we got back from a camping trip down south. I will use put about 6000 miles on it this fall when we drive to Albuquerque to camp at the balloon Fiesta, then zig back across the country to the NC coast for a fall family reunion before heading back to Vermont.
Nobody needs a pickup truck until they do and then it’s essential. I don’t tow with mine but I can’t imagine trying to haul junk to the dump or bring home lumber without one.

I was putting a few 2x4's in my Legacy one day. Back seat down and the lumber sat on top of the console.

When I closed the trunk there was a guy resting on his pickup looking at me.

He said it's not fair that I can carry 8' 2x4's inside my car when he has to tie his down because they won't fit flat in his bed.

He just laughed. We both knew more than a few 2x4's for me would be too many. :)
that is what the sliding back window is for. Even my Maverick can carry 8' studs without hanging over the tailgate. Slide them inside through the window, and put the other end where the bed meets the tailgate.
I’ve seen a few people bust a windshield like that. In fact I think Safelite uses that example in their commercials.
Count me as one of the few. Just a tap from the inside is all it takes.

Another rant…..my MacBook is running out of HDD. Have off loaded as much as I can, but need more space still. Plus, it’s an intel based model and support is going away. Still, Best Buy is offering between $150-$200 in trade on a new MacBook Air, which are on sale for $800 for the newest model.

Go to BB. They inspect my old laptop, assess that it is worth $200. That brings the new price to $600. Cool! I’m in.

I tell them I have to erase my HDD, which I did on the spot.

Clerk rings up the new one, but fails to deduct the Tradein…..essentially taxing me on the entire amount. I point out his error. He becomes flustered, not knowing what to do. Manager comes over, tells me that’s the way BB does trade ins.

I decline the offers and take my old laptop back home to restore from my backup. Still running into performance isssues I had before.

It’s pretty common to do that with tax. Like rebates on a car that come off the bottom, after tax. Or coupons I think work that way too. I would not have walked over $15 when you still need to go buy a new machine anyway.

way cheaper than Macs used to be. I am an iPhone guy, but never really figured out how to use a Mac when I needed to. and cheap, so I never bought one.

I think only cars have special arrangements for a sales tax credit. And with the laptop, you are not actually trading it in (even if they call it that). really 2 separate transactions. they are buying the old one from you.

Yeah...just got back from BB. I thought it would be like trading in a car and only paying tax on the difference.

BB issues a gift card for the trade in, charges the total amount for the laptop with taxes and then deducts the gift card.

Not a huge amount of money. But I thought I'd give it a shot.

That said, got a 13" MacBook Air with M4 chip, 256GB SDD and 16 GB of memory for $600 + tax. Way, way, way faster than my old one. Way more memory and hard drive space. Solid State drive is way faster and quieter than my old mechanical hard drive, too. Weighs way less. Slick piece.

Am I being unreasonable? Am I missing something?

Spouse just got a new Macbbok Air at the Apple Store. I think the same deal — you pay tax on the full amount, then they take the trade-in off. That might be the law? I’m not complaining about the tax because $800 for a laptop is a pretty good deal IMHO.

Got away with nothing. I had an old Intel based MacBook that I traded was 7 or 8 years old and slowing way down. I was surprised it was with what they gave me. That said, they are built robustly. Couple of scuffs on the old one, but that's about it. Got a new MacBook Air on sale. If I get another 7-8 years out of this one, I'll be very pleased. Thought the way Best Buy figured the tax wasn't to my advantage, but not crying over it.

Flirted with a Windows laptop (only briefly as I'm in the Apple ecosystem). Looked at a couple, but not seriously.

I am not computer savvy. I have a Microsoft Surface that is 9 years old and works well enough for my needs. I received a message stating Windows 10 will no longer be supported in October and my Surface cannot support Windows 11. I assume I will need to replace it with a current model?

Can use it a while as is. Just won’t get updates including security patches.

Today was a computer day for me. Prior to retiring some old hardware for good, I dug some of it out of storage to make sure there wasn’t anything on it that hadn’t been transferred to one of the new machines. Not easy to be sure but I think I found a few things that need to be re-homed. This will take a bit of time to sort out.

Two machines that were in storage were an Asus laptop that I think I bought in 2008 or thereabouts that came with Windows 7, later upgraded to Win 10. It is sloooow. But it still connects to the network in the house and is mostly functional. The other one that has been in a box in the back of a closet for years is an old Toshiba that I remember buying in 2003, still running XP. Holy cow, I had forgotten how user-unfriendly that was. And it gives a new meaning to “slow”. But man, were those nicely built! Everything feels very solid and robust, and it was nicely designed in terms of looks. It looks expensive for want of a better term. Oddly enough, it connects to the internet just fine but it won’t recognize the home network or the other machines here, and XP makes doing that very difficult. I don’t think that will be a huge problem as I think there’s nothing much on there that I need to keep. I’ll probably fool around with it for a few days before taking it and the Asus to recycling.

not sure I even have a home network set up. might be useful!

I have my last laptop downstairs because I didn't feel like dealing with it. Very cranky. pretty sure anything I could possibly need off that has been transferred. Mostly kept it since I had used it for doing the taxes, but that is years ago.

what I really need to deal with is our old dell laptop. Also got everything off that (have not really used it for about a decade, other than annually resurrecting it to do that taxes, until I switched to a laptop). about 5 years ago it crashed, and I was lucky to get it open in safe mode and copied files to a flash drive before I had to clear it off and reset to factory. Should have tossed it then, because my wife (against instructions) started copying pictures over to it again so was not sure it was safe to scrap it. I think we finally concluded that all her photos live elsewhere too. Just need to 100% Confirm that and I can scrap it if I really want tol

I do not. Kicker is, I have 2. A really lightweight folding 6-footer and a very good transformer kind of deal that has a wide base, is quite heavy, and can go from 6-foot up to 24-foot. I chose the crappy one just because it is lighter and this should have been a quick task. Lesson learned I guess.

I know that I mentioned setting up my Carver receiver and ADC speakers in the basement garage, but the more I thought about it it seemed to be a waste of good audio equipment. The problem was, where would I set the system up? Well, my wife found a couple from church who were looking for an upright piano and she told them they could have ours if they'd come and pick it up. The piano was in the living room so now I had space for the Carver/ADC duo. I want to pair them with either my AR XA Turntable or my Technics SL-1900, so I started looking for a good equipment stand. I found exactly what I wanted- a Pangea Audio turntable stand. The only problem is that the color I want is out of stock until October.
I'll keep looking, but If I have to wait a while so be it.
