The battery change on the Club Sport went off without a hitch. The AZ store initially had trouble finding the battery but that was the sole -and very minor- hitch.

our last house (the one we bought 3 years ago when we moved up here) was in a newer build neighborhood. Somehow, the street name got written 3 different ways officially. So the PO had it one way, the utilities another, and Google Maps had it a 3rd way. Made it interesting trying to get things there with online systems that defaulted to the USPS version.

I learned this when we were about to close and I called the utility company to get us set-up, and they could not find out house as something they covered (which I knew they did). I think they had our neighbors though. It took calling back and getting an agent that was more on the ball to unravel that issue.

That's nuts. You should follow up with your county office to make sure it is recorded against the parcel. You can also go into Google maps (not sure about others) and request to add it there.

If you find your house on the map, right click, select "add a missing place," and then enter the relevant information. After approval, it will come up by the "name" you give it (e.g., your street number), even for other users.

In other news, this morning I noticed our Amana refrigerator was not cooling- although the freezer was still cold. I called a highly recommended repair shop and their system wouldn't let them send out a tech without an address. The post office gave us a new address decades ago and it's still not in any system other than the USPS. The receptionist said my address wasn't in their system. I told her it isn't in any system or GPS map. "How come it's not on GPS?" she asked. ARRGH! She said she'd try a workaround and call me back, but she sounded doubtful. At that point my wife and I decided that we might as well buy a new refrigerator since the Amana was 19 years old. Our new GE arrives Wednesday.

19 years is a good run for a fridge but I’ve seen longer. Like the Frigidaire unit built by General Motors that was my parents first fridge. They got married in 1940 and that thing outlived my Dad (he died in 1983) but my Mom outlived it. IIRC that beast hung it up in the mid 90’s but it became the basement fridge around the early 50’s. It’s true, they don’t make em like they used to.

I’ll go along with that but when I buy an appliance I want it to do what it was meant to do. In the case of a fridge, I want it to work long and hard to keep my food from spoiling. And the longer the better.

I don’t understand these high efficiency washing machines today. They supposedly save water but a cycle takes over an hour, whereas the older machines cycle time was less than 30 minutes. So, water is saved but more electricity is used. Where I live, and I’m sure it’s the same everywhere in the USA, electricity costs more than water. So, what tree hugger thinks that’s a better way to wash clothes (same for dishwashers too). So, it seems like carbon foot prints only work when it’s a convenient way to make a point.

I have one of those washers. The cycle I use most often takes 45 minutes. It’s also gas, not electric, and uses less water than a regular washer does. Efficiency is a good thing! Enjoy your new fridge! Hopefully your electric bill will go down.

True story - when we bought the shore house I was signing up for the gas (easy process as it's the same company as home)... they couldn't find the address either. So, we searched by the previous owner. The rep then found it, with the wrong unit #. I suggested we change it. She said "I wouldn't, it's been fine for years and will probably get messed up if we do". I took her advice.

To clarify... the address is under is something that doesn't exist. It is my unit number with my neighbor's street address.

Our condo building is six units. It used to be three separate street addresses and then unit 101, 201, 102, etc... at some point the township made them change it to units A-F but still with three different street addresses. So strange.

In my sample size of 1, it seems the only thing that makes a lick of a difference in my electric bill is the air conditioning. No difference whether I changed an appliance or switched over to LED lighting. It all comes down to the air conditioner.

Which makes perfect sense. Most AC's run at least 8-12 hours a day in our climate. There is no appliance in your house drawing that kind of power that runs for that long.

I suspect that phenomenon you've noticed is like in CA, the rates go up so frequently and often that any minor offsets you make get washed out.

✅ So to summarize your challenges:

Yes: Avoidance isn’t just braking. Higher speeds constrain but don’t eliminate evasive options.

Yes: Reaction time is often faster than 1s for good drivers; engineering uses conservative averages.

Yes: Proper following distance compensates for speed.

Yes: More time on the road = more exposure, which can offset risks of higher speeds.

Yes: Changing the sign doesn’t radically change how people drive — the roadway environment matters more.

It seems like your position is that the slogan “speed kills” is an oversimplification that ignores context (driver skill, following distance, road design, exposure time, enforcement reality).

Consider this your last warning about mentioning ChatGPT in this discussion...

Did you see the post from @kyfdx above?
I didn't see the first warning? LOL. It's all good, the only reason it continued here was just testing someone's hypothesis with a real externality group of checks and concluded the hypothesis was "mostly false" to use a famous websites term.

I think your washer is electric, but the water is heated by gas.

I've never seen a gas powered washing machine. How would that work? Is your washer not plugged in?

Son #1 has several rental units and when he puts in washers and dryers he buys used ones. The place where he buys them told him they don’t bother trying to repair the HE top load washing machines anymore because parts are too expensive, too hard to get and no sooner do they repair one (they sell them with a 6 month warranty) they get calls that they quit working. After 3 or 4 times of that happening they stopped fixing top load HE washers.

Yeah, but still no where near a 3 or 4 ton AC unit.

    A 2HP pump is about 1500 watts

A 4 Ton (240V) compressor is 5040 (plus another 400 or so for the blower motor inside)

Now if you add a pool heater heat pump, then you're really in trouble.

Understandable that you wouldn't want crazy people to be able to find where you live easily.

This reminds me of my first GPS clamshell unit, it literally was trying to drive me off a cliff in the Sierra Nevada Mountains between South Lake Tahoe, CA and Nevada's valley (after passing the ridge/summit of the mountain) to the southeast. Make a left or right off into the abyss. Hopefully, no one obeyed and crashed due to the GPS.

In other news, I dropped by my Mercedes dealer to have the LF front tire checked; it had a very slow leak but more importantly, there was an impact bulge on the inner sidewall. I was surprised when my service advisor said the RF tire was fine. I must be mellowing in my advanced age; these front tires are 1,000 miles older than my last set when they were replaced due to wear.

On the car front.... We received our Crosstrek back from the body shop last Friday. After arriving home, I noticed an odd artifact in the paint on the hood, so I called them and scheduled to bring it back in this afternoon.

Verdict? They need to repaint the hood. Apparently, the painter didn't get enough base coat over the blend area, so the artifact is some of the sanding showing through. Man, is it subtle, but in the right light, at the right angle, it is glaringly obvious (such as in the photo above). So, I scheduled to take it in next Monday, and they said they need a couple of days with it. My wife is not happy with me! We are supposed to head back to Alaska in about ten days or so, and this is cutting it way too close for her comfort. She said, "can you just cancel it? I don't think it is worth the trouble." :s

@xwesx - oh, evil (but possibly helpful) idea, explain to the body shop that you are traveling and if it's not done perfect this time, they will need to pay someone in Alaska to fix it. They won't like it! If you went through insurance, I know for a fact that the "like a good neighbor" company's direct repair program contract specifically allowed the customer to refuse to go back to the same shop for corrective repairs.

Unless that’s the reflection of a passing cloud, that’s certainly glaring.

He succumbed to peer pressure, bought an EV and is still figuring out how to charge it.

In all seriousness he has not logged in since Aug 4th. Does anyone have his personal email address? Doesn’t seem to be on his profile.

Oh, thanks! If it isn't spot on this time, that will have to be what happens, because we're quickly running out of time in this part of the country....

The funny thing about the hood being such a drama queen is that the impact caused only a slight crease on the front right (passenger) corner, but it split the paint there. So, they had to fix the crease and then paint/blend the hood. And, no, @oldfarmer50 , it is definitely not a cloud (in the sky), but one could easily mistake it for that. Except at that angle and in sunlight, it doesn't really even show up. Unfortunately once you know, you know!

Ouch, @graphicguy ! That really stinks. Hopefully you can get it replaced without any drama. Goodness knows you need a break from that for a while....

Good investigative work, I had no idea it had been that long. I'll try to keep up. Thanks for checking though.
I also had to do some work on getting my will up to date, some people will get less and some more.....don't ask JMonroe - you are not in it. I wanted a phrase if I died first I didn't want my wife to give my car to her new boyfriend. The lawyer just laughed!!!!! :D

I am still alive and fine. I just got very busy with my personal life.........including tennis or pickleball (indoors if it rains) 7 days a week, and trying to help an older brother navigate the system for nursing homes etc. And a few trips here and there. I need a few more hours every day.
For the record, I don't own that shirt anymore, and I would consider a hybrid car, but not an EV.
We did just return from Victoria and the taxi driver had an older hybrid Camry with 180000 miles on it, he expects it to go at least 500000 miles....the car looked like new inside and out.
Good to hear from you. I too had wondered about your absence, but have been too busy, overwhelmed, to check into it.

But Insurance companies claim that a body shop repaired vehicle is worth the same as one clean from the factory!!!!! What are you saying? They lied?

Have you checked your spare lately?

Had stuff out of the trunk of the 14 Malibu so I decided to check the air pressure in the minispare.
    9 lbs.
So I used my portable charger to run it back up to 60. Should be good for another 11 years?

My cord for the 12-volt charger I carry in each car wouldn't reach from the Malibu inside plug to the trunk, so I parked the trunk next to the Cruze's driver door to be able to barely reach.
