Lol. I’ve had a L2 charger since 2015 - I promise this has never been an issue. And if it is, it says more about someone’s neighborhood than the charger, surely.

That made me think of a scene in the movie "Don't Look Up" where the General charges the group for snacks that are "free" in the White House breakroom.

Another year come & gone now. Today is Yom Kippor, our day of atonement. Now, we've been forgiven by G-d for last years "bad stuff" and start the new year off with a clean slate. Due to my needing to eat after I take my meds, I held off as long as I could until I started getting a bit light headed. But think he understands why I broke my fast a bit early. Worked out well as I was n/s today as it was.

    ————————————————-
I always heard it’s a bigger sin to do harm to your body especially intentionally by not taking your meds. I guess the man doesn’t want to do more work helping folks get well when he doesn’t have to . He’s got more than enough to do as it is.

I don't think waiting until the early afternoon to do anything would harm me that much. But, I was feeling really miserable I must admit!! Chronic pain is not an easy thing to live with 24/7 and it does wear me out, especially over 20 years dealing with it. But, I'm still here and as long as I don't get cancer like the rest of my siblings, think I can live with that.

I have no clue what I pay per KWH. But our monthly gas and electric bill runs about $120 IIRC. and last time I looked at it, delivery was more than usage cost.

I just looked at my latest electric/gas bill. Turns out I have three different rates:

.21 for peak usage hours (78 kWh hours used)
.14 for “shoulder” hours (0 kWh hours used)
.07 for off peak hours (395 kWh hours used)

@Michaell - I can't imagine using 0 kWh during "shoulder hours," unless those hours don't actually exist. There's a non-zero constant draw with any modern home.

I'll have to check the latest bill but I do know it was for just $118 for the last month which ain't that bad actually. The bill always shows the previous month and the previous year which shows us a lot. We could make it the same payment each month but the other half doesn't want to do that. I'd like to try it but not going to make a big deal of it. We've started to keep the temp at 80 degrees as much as possible though I prefer 79. But we go back & forth and obviously keeping it at 80 does lower the monthly bill. The a/c is the biggest user of power in the house followed by the dryer I'm guessing. Our new dryer is very efficient and dries things within 45 minutes or so in most cases.

Our daughter in St. Augustine called last night and is quite serious about buying a new build house before the year is out. Her current lease runs out the end of March so she'd need to act somewhat quick. The wife is going up next month to help her search. Looks like she wants a 3/2 so she can have a guest room and an office/den combo. If things go the way I think they might, I might be spending more time up there and quitting my Enterprise gig. Told the wife I'd rather not buy something until we sell the current property as using retirement funds is not a good idea. We'd have to put our furniture into storage & bunk with the kiddo for a short time. Even a short term rental could work but know she'd want us to stay with her until our place is ready. My wife would rather her rent for another year but don't see that happening. Seems there's a lot of new home building in her area of St. Augustine and the South Jacksonville area. So, our time table of moving could be moved up a bit but I could see me spending about 3 weeks there and the rest down here before we do move. I need to see my pain doc every 90 days so that would mean a trip down as I don't want to leave him until he retires.
So lots of changes on the horizon it seems. Will need to learn a whole new area but having gps, think I'll be just fine. And retiring again is something I think I'd like to do. My wife will continue to work her part time gigs & possibly stay at TurboTax for another year or two. She can do her current clients tax returns using the US mail like she does now. She's just have to quit her Wednesday/Thursday gig she's been at for the last 13 years. But, thinks she's about ready to do that. We'd also be looking at a 3/2 new build and would like to be within minutes of our daughter as I'll be on doggy duty while she is at work. And depending on which hospital she's at, her hours tend to shift from week to week. Think I'll be kept quite busy with the pup which is fine with me. We'll still be about the same distance from our oldest & her hubby in St. Cloud but being retired, will have more time to see them hopefully.

My bill shows just over $0.11/kwh

Doesn't matter when I use them.

We have natural gas for heat and hot water. Our house also seems to be very efficient (well insulated, newer system).

At the rate OF said, our place must be very efficient given how low the bill is (and being combined). Heat is gas and the range is also, but the wall oven (the one we use instead of the range oven), water heater and dryer are all electric. The next bill should be very low since we turned off the AC just before the last billing cycle ended, so the next bill won't have any heat or AC usage on it.

Sandy, having done a couple of recent sales and much planning around options, you have choices. And a new build makes it easier usually (giving you a better defined closing date, and some flexibility. On this new build place, I think we only had to put down 10% prior to closing (some builders might be 20%, though I guess in Florida, could be different!) But anyway, , we put that down from savings, and when it was done, coordinated to sell the old place immediately before closing on the new build. Though I will admit that can be stressful having that many moving parts. Luckily our builder let us move our stuff in the day before so we did not have to worry about having everything we owned sitting on a truck someplace but lots of people do that. Or use Pods to pack and have them sitting in the pod lot until you need them.

From NJ to NY (both resale houses) we actually bought the new place a week or 2 prior to selling the old place. Long distance, that made the moving process way easier but required taking out a mortgage on the new house for the balance after our deposit (from savings or the HELOC on the old place). We paid of the mortgage shortly after moving in. Having both at the same time is more convenient of course, but you get hit by more closing cost and lender fees.

the other option (that we did not want to do) is sell first, put everything into storage, and then be a cash buyer. Renting (or in your case, staying with your daughter) can get pricey if you are paying for rent and storage fees (plus most of your stuff is in a warehouse someplace!) We only considered that when we could not find a house and shopping long distance was a nightmare. The advantage is you are local and a cash buyer once you move, and know exactly how much cash you have!

For the life of me, I can’t figure out my electricity cost.
They have a paragraph stating it is 18.44 cents. But if I do the math using what they say I utilized, 1820, divided into my $192.26 bill, it is roughly 10.5 cents. HOWEVER, if I’m understanding correctly, the 1820 kWh I used is offset by 701 kWh my solar fed back to them. Then the calculation is 17.18 cents.

I remember in NJ discovering a state website that let you compare and choose electricity providers (the supply piece, not the delivery company which is fixed). I found that after we put the pool in and out electric bill was outrageous, which was the first time I ever looked at the bill closely. Seems I defaulted to Atlantic Electric as the supplier too, and they were very expensive. Went online, found another option with a fixed rate for 12 or 18 months (and a sign up credit of some kind, checked a box on the site and the change just happened. Delivery utility and charge was the same, but our supply charge dropped from something like $.25 to $.10. Bill dropped by hundreds of dollars.

Have not found the same thing up here but the bill is so low (relatively) for a 2,600 SF house with a lot of electric appliances, I have not bothered to look very hard.

    @stickguy,
Ohio has a choice program for NG and Electric. You can sign a contract for several years many of which don't have an early cancellation penalty.

Can't imagine not having a/c in one's house! But guessing the weather out in L A must be much less humid then South Florida. Do remember earlier this year, in either January or February, our bill was under $100, around $98 and change, and it was so nice. But last winter was a chilly one for us as we didn't need the a/c at all for a bit over a month. That's pretty unusual for us. The weather usually breaks in the end of October and we're seeing more days in the mid 80's with not many in the 90's anymore. I just like it when it's in the high 60's and we don't need to turn on the a/c.

Don't see us doing anything about selling until sometime in mid to late 2026. But that all depends on what my kid does. I know she'd like us to come up sooner then 2027 which I get. Can see me going up for a couple of weeks at a time for a bit which will give my wife time to clean up her affairs here. But one step at a time here. Let's see what she ends up with, either a 3/2 or 4/2, and go from there. They were talking about something like a duplex so we'd each have our separate places, just a bit smaller. I could see us all living together but we'd need maybe 3 bathrooms. But starting to get a bit more excited about making this big change even though we have a lot to do! But just being closer to the girls is the reason we're doing this. Want to do it while I'm still somewhat healthy and can actually do it. We're all pretty good about respecting boundaries, as we've lived under the same roof before she got her first job and we made it work. Only difference this time as I won't be working anymore, at least at first. Just learning the lay of the land will take some time.

we moved a little over 3 years ago (time flies!) from NJ to NY to be close to the family (including our son) after 35 years, and are very glad we did. And were surprised how quickly we adjusted, and it seemed like we had always been here. Very glad we did the move also, especially with what has happened since with the precious granddaughter arriving, and recent medical stuff (would have been awful for the kids to be 4-6 hours away when something like that happened).

so I guess my advice is, go for it! Get a dumpster and purge as much as possible, and go find a new place, and have yourself some excitement!

I will caveat that with, buy 1 place and stick with it. Our method of buying and doing it again 2 years later to get a bigger garage and pantry, was a bit much!

Now, I'm confused... Move? Or, don't move? :)

Well, here you go. Hit a fun milestone in the Crosstrek several hours ago:

I couldn’t get a good shot (from passenger seat!) due to a rough road that caused too much movement in the dark.
