I don’t know how you drive down there. Last Thursday I had to go to Uniondale out on LI and that was the day my old Garmin gps decided to stop working entirely. I had the boss print me off some MapQuest directions which were the worst things I’ve ever seen (telling you to proceed on a road without telling you right or left). How I managed to get down and back in that constant gridlock baffles me. I think I would lose my mind if I had to drive that every day.

I know you have your issues with owning a smartphone, but it would eliminate having to purchase a Garmin unit. You could plug it in and connect to the apple car play or android auto in whatever car you are driving. You could download spotify and create an infinite playlist of music. Paying bills on your bank's mobile app is simple and very secure.

Well, I’m not OF, but I’ve had iPhones for over a dozen years and I don’t do any of those things on my phone. I do online banking on my PC but not the phone. I guess I don’t trust it for that. Years ago I put a lot of music on iTunes using my PC and when I got the phone it automagically went there but I don’t use it to listen to music because I don’t want to hear music on the phone and the music app is a pain since sometimes I can’t turn it off. The music I listen to in the car is on a mini USB in the console and has what I like. And I’ve talked here before about how I’m allergic to nav apps generally.

I know I’m a dinosaur but I seem to have a mental block about using the phone for anything other than calls or texts. I see people whipping through things on their phones and am generally gobsmacked since I can see no way for me to ever do that. I might have commented here a while back on how I tried to use Apple Pay to buy something once a year or so ago and couldn’t get it to work. The clerk said she could help and said I should let her do it for me. I was feeling really old at that point and in a moment of weakness handed it over. I felt vindicated when she couldn’t make it work either.

There's a learning curve, for sure!

I didn't have a phone four years ago. Now.... I like having it, for the most part. I mean, it is almost a *must* due to all the two-factor authentication requirements now. But, I rarely sign into anything on my computer any more when it comes to bank/investment accounts, shopping, heck, even Docusign.... all on the phone. It is faster, simpler, and more convenient.

There are even times when I will be out on the weekend, probably in the middle of some project, wearing my cruddy clothes, no wallet onboard, and I have to make a quick run into town for something that broke, etc. I get to the checkout line before I even realize I do not have my wallet, but.... no extra trip now! I just pull out my phone, do contactless pay, and I'm on my way. In most cases. Sometimes, the vendor doesn't have that option. But, when that is the case, I just go to the next store over rather than going home and coming back. In the old days, it was my inconvenience. Now, it is their lost sale!

Are there things I don't know how to do and need someone to show me the first time (or first few)? Yes! But, usually the next person over in line knows how to do it and can work it out for me, regardless of age (I had a guy in his early 70s at Costco the other week sort me out with a Costco App issue that just befuddled me).

My wife still hasn't converted... but I think she is getting close. I suspect that one day even the Queen of Luddite is going to have a smartphone.

Oh, and my favorite part about it? I love the convenience of being able to act on something when I think about it... usually in the car (not driving), at work, or in some other transitionary space. Oh! I need to transfer $1,000 to my checking. Or, Oh! I need to remember to buy ten shares of that security.... Pre-phone, it might take me a week to line up my memory's timing with access to a computer. Now, I can do it as soon as I think about it.

U Haul certainly has a plethora of locations. Almost every garage and storage place seems to rent them. Enterprise has a location on Sicker road near the airport. When I rented from Ryder they were in Troy.

If I’d know my Garmin was going to die I might have gotten a Smart phone but it happened unexpectedly. As it is I ordered another new and improved Garmin that will suit my needs.

Also I’m not a big music listener and if I wanted to do bill pay online I’d use the IPad.

Farmer, I was going to offer to dig out my box of old electronics. Pretty sure I have 2 or 3 garmins of unknown vintage that you can have for free. If they don’t work you can have your money back.

took a few minutes today and shopped rental trucks. Enterprise does not offer 1 way, and Ryder doesn't let you price a rental out online (need to call) unless I just could not find a place to do it. But I could get a quote on a Ryder (16') and a U Haul (15'). Both with attics I believe.

Boston to Saratoga, (about 200 miles) the Uhaul was $309 (including miles) and Ryder was $578. Ryder required a 2 day rental, but Uhaul I believe includes that too (not that it would cost much more to keep it a day). Not sure how much nicer the Ryder is to make up the difference.

Thankfully she is leaning toward finding a local outfit that will make the trip, and just do it as one stop shopping with no effort other than paying them. Saves us having to get the truck, drive it through Boston traffic then 3 hours+ out the Pike and Northway, and hire crews on both ends to load then unload. Plus I'm getting too old for dealing with driving a beast rental that far. And she can afford it.

@oldfarmer50 - I keep a Garmin GPS as a backup for road trips where I don't have a cell signal... when I remember to bring it. The one I'd had for many years refused to charge or boot up, so I bought a newer one for about $30 on FB Marketplace. That one is still going, and I recently updated the maps on it.

This was the exact situation I was in a year ago when I tried to use Apple Pay and failed. No wallet, and had to make a pit stop on the way home after an eye procedure to pick up some eyedrops. I’d used Pay a few times on my previous phone but now I had a newer phone so of course they changed it. I got it to the point where I had to confirm the payment and I saw something on the screen saying something like “Press Here”. So I did, with no effect. The sales clerk ran into it head-on when she tried to help. We both gave up and I went home sans drops.

Turns out what it wanted me to do was press a side button that my old phone didn’t have. Of course it did have the old familiar round button front-bottom on the front that I remembered using but they did away with that. Change for the sake of change, just like Windows 11. *sigh*

I was a hard core "don't take my button" guy when I was getting my current phone (I think a 13). But needed it so took a risk. I think I forgot all about the button in less than an hour, and never looked back.

The old version of Touch ID was very fast to unlock. The one on my 8th generation iPad (which still has a home button) is slower, for whatever reason. Face ID on the newer phones is okay, but it glitches more often than Touch ID.

That’s an unusually nice example but prices on those have skyrocketed across the board. I remember 10 or 15 years ago I was considering a S2000 for sale with under 100k miles. At the time I didn’t want to spend the $7500 they were asking. I’m kicking myself now.

That’s one thing I like about Garmin. We do a lot of trips through the mountains where there’s no cell service and cell phone gps lose signal. The one I’m replacing was 10+ years old and had been banged up quite a bit. The new one will last longer than I will.

I shopped the newer GPS's, and many of them seem to link to the internet using your cellphone's data line. Since my data is metered, I didn't want that, although the convenience of real time traffic and routing would be nice.

So I just added Waze to my phone, in case I do need something more than maps.google.com for directions on my phone using my data.

When you guys get sick of my Acura updates, please let me know and I'll stop. This morning while approaching some heavy traffic, I decided to see what the full adaptive cruise control experience was all about. Now I had my foot hovering about 1/4" to 1/2" above the brake pedal just in case. It worked wonderfully. I had it set to 65, as traffic slowed so did the car. 40, 28, 16, 5, then a full stop right where I would have stopped. Once the traffic starts moving, a slight tap of the accelerator gets the car going again. A car jumped in front of me a few times and the car adjusted itself to maintain the correct following distance. Our Camry has this type of adaptive cruise control and I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

The handling is light and athletic. I believe this car would out hustle my Prelude through some twisty roads. It has a very usable power band. The more I drive it, the more I like it!

Dodge Durango GT this week. Brand new, only 1k when I picked it up. I have to say, I really like it. Not a hemi but the V6 feels much more athletic than in my Grand Cherokee.

ACC in the Acura works the same as in our Outback. I had a Camry rental once and the ACC doesn’t work the same way - it disengages if you go slower than 25 mph.

I have no idea what ours does because if I ever slowed down that much while using it I would have already mashed the brakes and disengaged it. I only use that on open roads without a lot of traffic.

Honda actually has the Prelude on it's build site. $43,195 including destination. Out of curiosity I built a sport touring civic hatchback hybrid, and that was $34,695. For $8,500 less, not as stylish but way more practical. And it has a moonroof (how they left that off a Prelude is a real mystery). So basically the civic is a Hybrid Integra.
