I'm on the verge of buying a new Pontiac, but their trade in offer is much less than the trade in value listed by KBB, Edmunds, or NADA.
NADA puts it at $4925 (without taking into account condition).
KBB puts it at $2550 taking into account condition (fair)
Edmunds puts it at about $2000 taking into account condition (rough).
The car is 1996 VW Trek, automatic with 107K miles, needs new tires and has minor right front dent that needs fixing. The dealer is offering $1300. What is he up to? Any thoughts?

    Every option (Moonroof/CD changer/pwr.seat, etc.)

    Timing belt done at 90K

Have you thought about selling it yourself? Plenty of VW-heads out there that I would bet anything would be fighting over your car for quite a bit more than that dealer is offering you.

BUT, Terry would be a much better source IF he had all the info.... what color? Where is it? what options you got? AC was optional on that car.... so give with the details. :)

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

White, auto trans, 107K, airconditioning, spoiler, sunroof, am/fm cassette, dual air bags, power doors (no power windows). I'd say it is between fair and good condition. Needs new tires and a few blemishes here and there.

Guys I can't thank you enough for the service you provide. 97 Lumina LS 72k color is Pewter 1 parking lot ding all records and papers, new tires. Location is Omaha Ne.

Moved here from North Carolina everyone tales me to buy a 4x4 so I need to sale the car. Odd thing is so far it's 50 degrees here bless that global warming. Family in N.C. is buried in snow.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Ok, we have a 96 with 106k, no power crankers, no help there ..

But we do have auto, slider, spoiler, some tunes -- so, if it has no paint work, no rust, little or no dings and kisses, deep rubber, interior is Clean, service is 95%, then on a trade you should be lookin' in and around that $2,0/$2,5 figure .. if it needs work, start deducting.

This may be a nice vehicle for Retail Rd, $3,9 in the paper and $3/$3,5 sends it down the rd. .l.o.l..

Thanks so much for replying to my post. the prices quoted by you for both trade-in and retail for my 2001 Impala LS fall right in the ball park of what I should expect to get for it.

    Again, thanks!

...... No I'm sorry, but Bill hasn't been here since August .. if you have been following the news, he has been cloning babies with Brigette in France .. so you have to put up with me.

I'm not sure of your question, but 00 Daewoo Leganza SE's with 20/30k are doing in the $3's, usually the low $3's .. you can also email me.

...... Your from NJ, so the color won't hurt ya, but the miles will .. *good previous accident repair*, you won't get any help there ..

Make sure you get this puppy detailed before you try to trade it .. let's say, it looks like a vehicle with 30k, way deep in rubber, the leather is lookin' like new, all and all a nice vehicle ~ trade side, you are going to be in the $2,5/$3,0 range .. if it's a real nice one, you might consider Retail Rd, $4,9 in the paper and $3,5/$4,5 drop kicks that puppy south.

    I hope this helps ...

    .... Lot's of Chevy's being traded today .l.o.l..

Another 97, it's a LS and the miles are way tall but low for the year, it's the right color and your are in Omaha (and no snow.?) - I bet you will miss NC.!

"Sounds" like it could be a nice one, pw seat and all the other stuff, nice vehicles are hard to find in Omaha (I checked the auction reports) .. you might see $3,5ish for this one.

    Good luck ...

Well, the Honda dealer might cringe a bit but the nightmare would belong to the owner of the Monte Carlo..:)

And, who sold you a timing belt? I don't think these cars even use one!

There's gotta be a cure for what I've got.
Why am I doing this to myself?
Asked at the big Chevy dealership whether they had any "Shorty" vans in stock; just in case. Last days of the year, and all.
Wound up looking at this: http://www.msu.edu/~steine13/bovl.html.
Had a digital camera on me (fancy that!) and thought I'd post it here for fun.

I have got to stop doing this, though.
So, is this worth $1k, even? I suppose it runs okay, and it doesn't appear to be leaking anything.

Can someone please spell out for me what I need to do to properly paste a link??? I've done it before but I can't remember....

    Have fun,

..... This is a Florida vehicle .. right.?

Not only is this a Florida vehicle, but it's a Black south Florida vehicle .. Ooooch, Ouch.!

Are you lookin' to buy this stud, or sell it.?

If you are lookin' to buy it, you should be able to about steal this pup .. I'm thinkin' the dealer can't have a dime over $19 in it and he would probably slip ya the tongue to get it off his lot, slip him $20,0 plus the taxes and tag - then keep him at arms length .l.o.l..

    Let me know ....

....... So you are lookin' to dump the Leon .. well all good things must come to a end.

It's a 95, the miles aren't bad for the year, it's a auto, the miles aren't bad for the year, it's an auto -- well, that's all I can come up with .. it's a $1,0/$1,500 vehicle on trade, and the air doesn't work and, and, and I bet it needs tires and how was your Xmas .... might try selling this one on your own, $2,9 in the paper and take $2 grand.

    sorry ...

    Hi guys,

            Thanks for the estimates, Terry!

tblazer503, thanks for the local info. BTW, we

are comparing the 2003 Accord LX Sdn with the Camry LE. One thing I've noticed is that on the Accord, it seems that the A-pillar is prominently in my field of vision when driving. As a 2003 Accord owner, have you noticed this? I've seen some people on the Accord board comment about this with the Accord coupe.

  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
We put over 200 miles on our Accord today and I am 5'3 while my boyfriend is 6'6 and neither one of us felt it was a problem. You can see it but it never obstructed my view. Just take the car on a long test drive in various situations (expressway, parking, curvy streets) to see if it's going to be an issue for you. One thing I can tell you about the Accord is that the engine is awesome. So are the seats, the transmission, the interior. The more I drive this car the more I like it.
  • 1997montez341997montez34 Member Posts: 202
My Monte had the ill-conceived 3.4L DOHC V-6, aka the "Twin Dual Cam". It most definitely uses a very expensive-to-replace timing belt every 60K.

Love the '03 Accord!!!! Akedmunds, I have no issues with the A-pillar. This car is a joy. It actually makes me leave early for work because I can't wait to drive it in the morning.
  • tblazer503tblazer503 Member Posts: 620
It doesn't bother me at all... if you go to the Thomason internet sales, they will let ya take it on the freeway.. =o) My test drive was about 10min... very nice route they have...

Besides... I haven't been in any vehicle where the A pillar isn't in the way... unless it had a really short dash like the older vehicles... (my 86 Corolla)... I got used to it after driving my 94 corolla, though...

  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
O.K., I had forgotten about that engine.

Glad you are enjoying your new ride!
  • beach15beach15 Member Posts: 1,305
Won't be getting rid of it anytime soon, but looking to see what our Avalanche is worth both trade and retail. It is as follows:
    -2002 Chevy Avalanche 2wd
-Black Onyx exterior with Neutral tan cloth
-Z66 Premium Ride On-Road Suspension & Appearance package
-Convenience pack (OnStar, Auto Climate, Dimming Mirrors)
    -Power, front cloth buckets
    -OWL tires
    -13,100 miles

This truck is in beyond immaculate condition, purchased in March. Everything looks, feels, and smells as if it just came off the assembly line, and dirt rarely touches any part of it. I'm a detailer, so awesome & immaculate are the word, with the black paint always pampered, and nothing other than clean people and their clean shoes allowed inside. Detailed to the tune of 5-10 hours every weekend, and there's always at least 5 layers of sealant and/or wax on the paint, which is still absolutely swirl free (don't see that often!), chip free, and no scratches. Even the wheel wells are always kept shimmering black. I could go on and on, but won't for everyone's sake! Original sticker was $33,413.

    Trade & retail figures?
  • savage7savage7 Member Posts: 10
Local Chevy dealer has a 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo w/73k miles, black w/gray interior, 4x2 w/I-6 engine. Looks good in and out less a few seat blemishes in the cloth. Dealer wants $8,100 OTD price. Drove it on a 200 mile trip, runs and drives good, however, did hear rumbling sounds in rear end, took it by the local Jeep dealer and rear-end man said it was the center carrier bearings ... dealer fixing:)

I called the previous owner too, new auto trans two months ago, new brakes & tires. They loved it; traded for a truck. What do you think? I hear these jeeps are problems. We're in Texas.

Brand New 2002 like yours with near zero miles is/was going for $27,000 at retail during the big end of year blow out.

Average retail asking price in the Midwest for a used one with 15K or less miles, $26,000.

Take into account the dealer will expect to have the truck through the winter since it is a 2WD and they need around $2500 to play with between trade and asking price. Trade $23,500-$25,000 would be about right.

First, thanks for providing this service. Just reading the posts and responses is very informative.

Second, your thoughtful appraisal of my sled as a trade would be much appreciated:
    2001.5 Passat GLS (new model)
1.8T, Silverstone Grey, auto, 23,000 miles
sunroof, cd player, alloys, htd seats, homelink
Lives on the street in the city (Philly), so some scuffs and nicks on the bumpers and a few on the wheels, but it has been kept washed and waxed.
The fuel filler door is cracked and taped (new one on order - geez).
Otherwise super clean inside and out.
    Trade values posted:
    KBB Good = $14,800, Excellent = $15,800
    Edmunds Good = $15,800, Excellent = $16,400
    NADA = $18,400(!)

I'm looking for $15,800. Seem reasonable from what you know?

Finally, maybe this has been addressed in earlier posts that I was unable to find, but I'm curious as to why the NADA is sooo much higher? Is this a quirk or do you see this as the norm? If the norm, how come?

Thanks for reading this far :>
and thanks again for providing this service!

** This truck is in beyond immaculate condition ..

So tell me how you really feel.! .l.o.l..

It sounds like a nice one, could be considered as a "baby doll" ? .. 13k, so the miles are ok and it's a Z66 - DE, that's Delaware .. right.? So your a yankee boy with a black vehicle, so that won't hurt ya .. if it got traded today, you would be seeing trade figures in the mid to low $23's ... Dkuhajda is a little off in that $25 figure for a trade.

Down Retail Rd, as ultra clean as yours is ~ $26,900 in the paper and $25,5/$26,5 sends it packing ... enjoy it, these are nice vehicles.

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Well it's a good color combo, you have the slider , bun warmers, tunes, wheels and it's an Auto .. Yee ha.!

Ya have a few little kisses here and there, probably around $300 with a brush and the miles are just a tinge on the high side .. so, on a trade you should be seeing in and around the the $14's .. depending on the dealer, you "might" get close to $15 ...

Looking to trade in a '94 Sentra XE manual w/air, cruise, cassette and 72K miles. Kbb "good" condition. Kbb.com told me $1700 trade/ 3030 private party.
Can any buyers tell me what I might be able to get for this in trade?
Okay, the funny part: the dealer where I want to send this into is advertising a '94 stripped version of my Sentra w/82K for $6,995.
    Thanks for your help!

You were right on the money on the 95 SL1. I did get a bit more for it in the end ($600) but I would've been much less prepared to dicker without your expertise.

Thanks for the numbers. There's no way we're getting rid of it, just curious to see what it is worth, real-world.

rroyce10- It is VERY nice! Rides and handles like a magic carpet, is very hushed on the road, has loads of power, room galore, very versatile, and just looks terrific in black, especially with the cladding that so many people hate (not me!). Too bad we can't have a new Lexus alongside it in the driveway like yours!

Thanks for setting my expectations on the trade value - will help me reevaluate whether it makes sense to look for a deal right now.

Wondered if you had any comments on the spread btw NADA and KBB. In my case, it was $14s to $18s. Is that typical? If so, any insight as to why the two guides are so divergent?

    Again, much appreciated!

..... Good morning, the miles are just a little on the high side for a 02 and of course we have the "Mathias shift" (manual tranny) .l.o.l..

If it's a nice one, clean, no kisses, yatty yatty yatty then you should be seeing the mid to high $10's on the trade side ...

Good luck and Happy New Year.!

  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... I don't know if I can keep this short and sweet, but I will try.

Contrary to Morningstar, Money, Kiplinger, Forbes, etc, etc, the used car market was stronger than the 101st Airborne in a fire fight until about mid October -- then the 0% on the 02's and especially the cheap financing and rebates on the 03's started to "really" to slow down the prices on the used market, similar actually to 9/11.

The big difference here is, the interest rates. You can now go to most CU's and get 4.5/5.2% on a new or a pre-owned vehicle back to 00 -- So what's all this mean .. KBB is mostly used by dealers and Nada is mostly used by Lenders and depending on the where and who of it, both will use them.

The biggest problem they have is, being able to keep their finger on the pulse of the market and watching some 15/20 million vehicles roll around that market ~ it's ever changing, and the bottom line is, the value of what vehicles are doing at the Auctions, NOT what they are selling for down the street.

It's very hard just for the dealers to watch, especially if they are just a single point dealer .. an example might be the little Honda store down the street or the small Ford dealer down the road, if they don't see many Lexus or Old's come in, perhaps they may not know what the "real" value is and be conservative ...

KBB, TMV, Nada and Black Book are just guides, they can only give you an Idea, a point to start at, they are not gospel and end up being Semi-accurate, plus even the "pro's" need to know how to READ them ~ and depending on the vehicle and the time of year they can be off by 5/15% ..

It's funny you asked this question. Yesterday I was with a BMW dealer, and at his computer I was showing him the difference in 3/4 different sites on a 98 528 he just took on trade, and the spread was $1,5/$5,200 on the retail side and $2,0/$3,500 on the wholesale side .. go figure.

I hope I didn't bore you into a coma .. have a great New Year.!

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Ok John, we have a base Sentra XE, we have 77klicks going on, we have air, it's a handshaker (no help there) .. the miles are waaay low for the year,

If there is no rust, no-repaint, service is 95% and the tires are deep, then you should be seeing in and around $1,0/$1,5 on the trade side -- Me personally, I would have it cleaned up and drop it in the paper for $2,990 and let that real nice cheerleader from the Miami take it home for $2,500 ...

    Terry.

    ........ Wow, $8,1 ..?

Sounds like a deal .. have it checked out close -- if it's ok, then grab it, that straight 6 in the Jeep will run 150k+ (properly serviced) .. where do you think Lexus got the idea ...

    Terry.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,822
"that straight 6 in the Jeep will run 150k+ (properly serviced) .. where do you think Lexus got the idea?"

    Jeep?????
Just maybe, Lexus got the idea from a small car manufacturer located in Bavaria.

Ve haff vays to make you behave, you know!!!!

I think it's wonderful the straight six is making a comeback. 60-degree V6s are fine, but anybody who builds 90-degree sixes to save money on the assembly line should be taken behind the barn and spanked. Audi, Mercedes come to mind. But you can once again buy a Chevy with an I6 engine; go figure.

    Opinionatedly yours,

I've looked, listened and talked to everyone I can about this 99 GCL Jeep, even took it on a 200+ mile trip to Grandma's over Christmas and had a Jeep mechanic look it over and my mechanic. However, visiting the GCL Jeep discussion on Edmunds town hall, I notice Jeep really takes a beating from unhappy owners. Like everything, we take our chances I guess. This jeep I'm looking at looks, drives and smells good (I have a nose for a good car?).

The dealer also offered me a 99 Ford Explorer with 59K miles for the same money ($8G)... drove the Ford but was not near as stable on the highway as the Jeep and dirty nasty on the inside, plus it was only a 2-door. (These were both "back lot cars" that had just been traded in and not detailed yet). Sooo, guess I'm in for a Jeep! Many thanks you guys ... where do I send your check? Happy New Year!
