Grandma and Grandpa are heading overseas for a couple years and are looking to sell the following private party (and pretty quickly)

'98 Sable GS sedan, Dark red with tan guts
86k miles
Cloth seats, front bench
24V Duratec
No moonroof
No "driving by braille" - grandpa gets around just fine, thanks.

Basically your typical 5 yr old American sedan, in pretty nice shape in and out. Where do you hit it for a quick private party sale?

      A base with a 4 banger -and- a handshaker .. I'm going to bet you will have to wade through the people looking at this one, pick a number kinda thing .l.o.l.

         Sounds like $600/$900 on the trade side, but if it's extra nice with all that paint, might be worth $1,200ish ...

          The deal of the day was that 1997 Legacy Wagon, 58k, equipped, one owner - $5,9 ..

Hi Terry,

First timer here. Need help with the dilema.....

Currently have 98 ML320 since new in mint condition (like new) with all OEM options....CD(bose system), Moonroof, leather, heatedseats, fenderflares, front guard with Hella fogs, sidestep bar, tow package, front sheepskin covers, MB car cover, front mask etc.....13k miles on it right now as I rarely use it.....right now its located in the Las Vegas area, I could also get it to the Philly (PA) area as well if its a better market. BTW, color is black over palamino?.

Im thinking of getting a sedan instead of the suv, what are you suggesting to get? and what would be a trade in value and private of the ML?Should I trade it in or take the needed time for the private sale for a higher value?

       You know, I forget you are in Columbus and I was at 2 big Provident sales this summer ..

       Your vehicles still look new, I remember the rear quarter, it was the Dealers ex-wifes sisters car - or something like that ..??

       '99 Lexus LS400, black on tan, 36k .. no miles, right color for the area, right options .. trade side, the dealer would be "trying" to hit you at $23ish, it's worth $24ish even with the harelip .. down Retail Rd, $28,9 and $27,9/$28,5 sends it south .. I have a nice, 15k loaded up, 01 in white pearl, that you can have for $45,0 .l.o.l.

        '96 Toyota Avalon XL, beige on tan leather, 137k (lot's of miles.!) .. right color, driver seat is a little worn, it's a loaded up XL .. trade side, the high $3's, depending on the dealer .. down Retail Rd (super service, needs -0-) $6,499 in the paper and $5,0/$6,0 sends it off to a new Church ..

         '93 Honda Accord SE, dark green on tan, 137k .. trade side, in and around the high $2's, low low $3's .. down Retail Rd, as above, $5,9 "asking" and a Buckeye should pick it up for $4,5ish ..

So close on my first attempt! Thinking of selling/trading in my '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. The details are:

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD
Color: Gray
Engine: 4.0L V6
Mileage: 65,750 *(can't believe I left it out)
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Additional
4WD
Cloth seats
AM/FM/Tape/CD Player

Condition: Excellent save for 2 - 1.5in. scrapes one on the rear quarter panel, one on the front quarter panel. (I am considering scratch paint repair prior to sale.)

Could you let me know:

1) What the actual trade-in would be?
2) What the private party sale would be?
3) Is it worth it to go private party?

Looking to get into a 2004 FX35 AWD w/ TECH. Thanks for the help!

The miles are low for the year, new sneakers, color - it's the only color that Yota made in 96.l.o.l., auto, cd, it an LE, probably a real nice vehicle .. trade side, you are going to see around the $4,5 figure, maybe even $4,9ish depending on the dealer .. a fair Ex price, so no one get's their feelings hurt - double nickels ($5,500) you could sell it on the street and get $6,5 ..

          The TL doesn't sound bad, miles are kinda low for the year, good color, deep round things, probably has $14ish in it (Acura dealer - certified.?) .. try $16,5ish and see what happens, they are starting to get plentiful, but if it's nice don't loose it at $17ish ..

.... Depends on what he thinks a big auction is, is there 500 vehicles running and 10 Bimmers, 2000 vehicles and 500 Bimmers via BMW financial or whomever ... ?

The problem really isn't the size, it's the "does he really know Imports ..?" deal .. but yes, you can save a bundle if he knows what he's doing ..

....... As a rule, Left Coasters do pay a little more .. I pay $20,000 for a 12k vehicle in the East Coast, on the West Coast, I would pay $20,000 for the same vehicle with 25k ..

Thanks for your help with the Camry. She really has her heart set on a Jetta & trying to find one in the price range in the next couple weeks. We'll see what happens.......

The TL is at a private used car place, not an Acura dealer, and not certified. I just saw it on Sun when the dealer is closed, so have not been able to get in it or drive it yet. But have read about seemingly a lot of transmission problems & brake rotors warping in this model. Have you seen these problems in the TL's you come across?

Well.. I understand the part about "Does he know imports?", and I have reservations and my own opinions about that. But, I was curious if you knew anything about that ABC auction in Indy? Its scheduled for Thursday, 8/7. Is that an auction that runs a lot of BMWs, and is that a market where you can get a good (low) price? He frequents that Grove City, OH auction a lot, but he rarely makes it over to Indy.

The next one would be for my 80-year-old father. It is easier for him to get into and out-of than anything else we've looked at. He drives all of 3K miles a year.

Now if I can just find one... they are rare.

So today I was considering trading in my 2000 Toyota 4Runner (Denver) on a Mazda6s.

The 4Runner is an SR5 V6, auto, blue, with 48,000 miles. Has all the basics - roof rack, alloys, A/C, CD changer. And also has aftermarket leather that is well done. No sunroof. Very good condition.

Their initial offer was $16,000, which seems low but didn't surprise me. Ultimately, the sales manager "hinted" that he really wanted my 4Runner and, of course, wanted the Mazda sale, and would do $19,000 on the trade. The Mazda would be on an S-plan, so no monkeying around there.

The trade of $19,000 sounds like a great deal for me. What are your thoughts Terry?

A co-worker found a Lexus, and I offered to "ask the expert" for her.

It is a 2000 GS300M Platinum Edition (as described in the online ad, from a non-Lexus new car dealer). Silver, only 15,000 miles. Fully loaded supposedly (premium sound, roof, etc).

Assuming it is clean as advertised (no MAACO visits in its past), what is the real retail value on this puppy? It is listed at $26,995, which seems reasonable to me, but it is outside my area of expertise.

Hi Terry,
Can you please give me some advice on what I can expect to get by trading in my Accord LX? Here are the details:
1996 Accord Lx, 4dr sedan, manual transmission, 56300 miles, rear spoiler, remote keyless entry, 4 new tires. No dents, good condition, clean.
I'm in SF bay area. An Acura dealer gave me $4500 quote. I think that's way too low. But what should be my target for negotiation? The Edmunds TMV for trade-in is $6753, but I'd be happy if I get that value by selling it myself to a private party. Obviously no dealership can offer that. I'm trying to buy an Acura MDX. If I can trade it in at a fair value, I would do that to avoid the hassle of selling it myself.

Looks like you have been a little busy, but I did have some updates and a few questions, just a few, I promise.
My friend traded the 00 Nissan Altima GXE in, with a little wrangling and he got $7,900 (remember $6,500) - so "Thank You" very much! Our crazy neighbor, well he still has the 01 MB and has the price down to $55,000 and his Caddy he sold Saturday for $12,000 and he has been up all nights crying about it.
Here's the hard part, friend trying to trade got $16,000 so far on a real nice 2 tone 2000 Infiniti QX4 4x4, auto, white top, gold bottom, tan leather heated, power sunroof, wheels, has every option with 23k, I have to admit they take great care of it. Whats your thoughts?
(I read this darn thing twice, I hope I didn't miss anything)

00's have the 3.3L... 2001 has the new 3.5L engine, HID lights, etc... $16k seems close to being the ballpark.

As it stands now, there is 43 BMW's registered so far .. 99's, to 02's - 3's, 5's, 7's, one Mini and one 1200R motorcycle, miles from 12k thru 90k .. this too can all change, most auctions don't see the final registrations til the night before, supposed to be about a 1200 vehicle auction, that means Caddys, Honda's, boats, Lexus, golf carts, Audi's, etc, etc ..

           Check back with me Wednesday late afternoon, I should have alot more info ..

..... Oooh - kaaaay, now were cooking with gas .. 65k, V6, 4x4, no slider, good color, tires.?, sounds clean .. miles are a little tall, trade side you should be seeing the ultra high $10's, low $11's ..

If you take a cruise down Retail Rd, a great detail, service is up to snuff, fix the scratches - $13,5 in the paper and some nice Berkley Student should buy for $12,0/$13,0 .. in Califernee, you don't get credit for the trade, no tax savings ..

          Well, this dude has like Nooo miles .. plus you have a bunch of Xtra's, especially those sheep skins, it's gotta be 117 out there right now .. clean, no-repaints "could" might "maybe" see the $15ish range, a big draw back here - black in the desert .. 2 things can happen here, a dealer might have a home for it someplace else and put $15 and some change in it - Or, just go with $14,0 and gamble his time and $$ .. definitely will do the mid to high $15's in the Philly area ..

          Down Retail Rd, $18,9 in the paper and the first buyer with real "el Casho" gets a new driver for $17,5/$18,5 .. the color is the killer here ..

Depending on the time, place and the barometric pressure it could easily do $24ish, might see $25,0 at the auctions, right color, no miles, plus it's a PE, hard to get - hard to find, (this being a stand tall vehicle) .. .. plus it will loan over $26,0 from a lender and most dealers would have it up for sale for $28ish ..

..... Miles are tall, but we have the 4x4, V8 and the slider .. so if it's a nice one, no battles at Kmart, no soccer team invasions, no re-paints and it looks and drives like a 30k vehicle .. then trade side, in and around the high $10's, low $11's depending on the dealer ..
