Hello, could you throw down some quick figures for trade-in and private party for my 1998 Lexus ES, two-tone tan/darker tan, leather but no heated seats. Has the rest of the options, 57K miles in the Denver area. Thanks

My inconsiderate neighbor just put this on the curb.

    99 Daewooe Leganza
    Brown/Burgandy
    37k miles
    all power
    tan interior.
    tires in decent shape
some dents on the body, otherwise in decent shape
    auto

Guess what the asking price is?

    $5980!
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
Someone could say "How much do you want for it?"

He'd say "I'd like to get $5900". He's "asking" that much.

The owner doesn't realize that people are selling new Leganzas on a two-for-one deal for $14,000....

The prospective buyer says "They'd like ice water in hell, too - I'll give you a grand".

For info, Galves lists the car at $2,350. Even at full boat retail, it's a $3K car.

The again, just yesterday, we were bidding over $20K on one - you just never know......

Asking price is $3k; phone number covered to protect the innocent.. Actually drives nice, has 160k miles on a straight-six that doesn't leak... I didn't even know they made 5speeds in '89.

that 99 leganza just happens to be a very in demand car. it has many features that the other daewoo cars dont have. special engine and suspension that i think only 1500 or so had for that model year. so the owner just might get his price for that car. its a very in demand car right now.
  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
Guys, take a run at this: 2000 ML320, 53K, silver/black, heated seats, moonroof, CD changer, towing package, but no leather, nav, phone, or 3rd-row seats. Very nice clean condition, no smokers, no dings, but its a family vehicle so not absolutely pistine. One owner, local, dealer maintained by the book. Almost new Michelins. Trading on a 2004 Pilot.

    I'm thinking $20K. Feasible?

  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
you have just formally convinced everyone that you don't know what you're talking about:

"that 99 leganza just happens to be a very in demand car"

You obviously don't know what a Daewoo is and what Daewoo's situation in the market is right now.

Go home, do some research, come back later - your torch is extinguished, you're off the island.
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
i've never heard of any daewoo being a "very in demand car"... this guy is amazing. Before you know it, he'll be saying Hyundai's are now better vehicles than Lexus'. He just showed all of us his competency...

"that 99 leganza just happens to be a very in demand car."

Dude, you just made me spit soda out my nose. That's got to be the funniest thing I've read here in a while...kinda like the guy who said his dented '89 Caddy with no A/C and a bad tranny was in "good" condition...oh, wait.

Hey Terry, friend of mine just flipped his boxster on a spirited mountain drive and the insurance is about to give him their 1st offer. What should he accept with the following car:

    2000 Ocean Blue Boxster S
    42K miles
    Full Leather
    CD
    Power Seats
    Blue Mats
Kumhos that were about at 90%
paint was in great shape with a chip or two, leather was near perfect, top in great shape. Rear window was crystal clear. He detailed often and really babied the car

    located in ATL, GA

    thanks

Especially if it already had the Isuzu Timing Belt and tensioner installed that was a service bulletin upgrade for what is essentially the same engine in the Amigo. Despite what people say, they really do not break down that much with big problems. They have been good money makers for buy here pay here with no big failures. $1000 wholesale on most 99's, $200 in the timing belt upgrade plus the labor, a couple hundred more in this and that. Retail $3500 with warranty for life of loan, at 21% interest, easy money.

Even with the DMA (Daewoo Motor America) restructuring situation and some past parts shortages, the parts just are not that hard to find, nor are the parts expensive. FYI the Leganza has basically the same engine as an Isuzu, transmission as a Toyota. Lots of low mileage parts at salvage yards due to the low total loss values of the Daewoos.

The $5980 for the Leganza is just about as bad as someone locally trying to sell a 96 Saturn SL2 with 110K for $6000, and get this $6000 Firm!!!!! The Saturn dealer has the same car in a 2001 with 34k for $7900, 1997 with 54K for $4900. Lots of people smoking something?

BTW $5900 is about the total of all the payments by the time the people own the car.

That Daewoo is extremely hot right now, that guy's going to have a bidding war on his hands. perhaps he'll have to sponsor an ultimate fighting challenge just to determine who will be worthy enough to drive off such a gem! I'd gladly pay 14K for it, cheap at twice the price!

I once knew a guy with a Daewoo, man. He drove like a Honda civic before he got it, but once he was behind the wheel of the Leganza it was...BUNG...instant chick magnet. No Lie!

Yeah, get the Daewoo, definitely the daewooo, Yeah, the Daewoo...Whoops, time for Wapner!

2001 LX470, 46xxx clicks, White/tan, all the toys (except Nav), incl. ML audio. in So Cal. Listed for $26K ?????

Ran CARFAX, clean, 2 owners (11/00 and 11/02), no accident, no lemon law report, no odo rollback.... no nothing. Then what ??? Even 99's with gadzillion miles are not listed that low ?? What *may* be wrong with this car that Carfax cannot show ??? That's my worry.

Whatdayathink ??? I want to buy this car for CASH if it's on the up and up.... And I'll buy tomorrow if this price is true.

"special engine and suspension that i think only 1500 or so had for that model year"

What, are these the 1500 that actually HAD an engine and a suspension?

Seriously, I drove a Daewoo Lanos (bottom of their line) for a couple of days as a rental in '01 - really not _that_ atrocious a car. From an internal parts and build quality point of view, and a couple of days of driving, it seemed in the range of the Cavalier - light years from good, but not unusually awful either. That being said, I didn't have to worry about maintenance.

    ......... Did I read this right ..??

             01 ..? - LX470 ... ? 50k ...?

             white pearlish ..? tan gut's ..? clean history .. ???

                 $26 grand ...? in S.Cal.?

Wow .. I could be wrong, but this thing needs to be turned upside down AND inside out .!

Carfax does a pretty good job, but they can't trace the guy who get's a check for $6,900 and then goes to Billy Bob's Bavarian Bistro Bait tackle and Import repair Shop, and has a $3,500 job done on a nice vehicle and really believes no one will ever know - (maybe it's a miss print.?)

Believe it or not, it's almost "kinda" common, I will see a clean Carfax then take a look see, an Elco and Phooof ~ we got Putty City .. usually from the guy that's trying to beat the Lease company, bank, boss, wife, etc, plus he's looked figures up on the sites, then doesn't like the figures he's hearing because the dealer Knows it's been played with ... or -- it's a Salvage/rebuilt title and they "forgot" to put that in the Ad .. this is not a Carfax thing, this is a "I'm going to try to outsmart myself" .. -Again- thing .l.o.l..

$26,0 ... ?? I dunno, I'm paying $39/$40 for the ultra clean 20kers and can sell everyone I can get my hands on .. clean 50kers will see ALL of $35/$36 on a phone call ... $26,0 .. sniff, sniff is that my deodorant ..?

Reposting from earlier - I need an idea this weekend, please. It looks like my Sienna might be in sooner than expected. Gotta love Toyota's Russian Roullette. I've checked KKB and Edmunds and come up with trade estimates of $4.8k to $5.6k. I'd like your opinion as well.

Would someone please suggest what I should expect for my trade on my '97 Dodge Grand Caravan LE at a dealer in NE PA?

    96.5K miles
    3.8 L V-6
Color - light iris (purple gray)
    Cloth interior - mist gray
Condition - Interior a little better than average. Exterior Average - no rust, just minor dings. New windshield (rock damage)
    Dual temp control
    8-way power seat
    Sunscreen/solar glass
    AM/FM/CD
    Rear Heat and Air
    Traction Control
    Luggagge Rack
    Conventional Spare
4 new tires - about 4k miles on them

    TIA

...... Phoof.!! - you couldn't come at a better time, good timing .! .l.o.l.. .. I'm staring at a 3.8, 96 100k Grand ES, wheels, quads, dual air, TC, rack, keyless, abs, tow pack, overhead, gold wheels, new Miks on all 4 sides, new stoppers, cell phone set up, high end cd Infinity, white pearl, grey cloth gut's, power everything, looks drives smells like 30k ... but the miles Flat kill it, there's a big difference between a 100k Corolla and a 100k Doe J' .. :)

It's going to the auction, it probably will see $3,5ish only because it's got "eyes", clean and it's been cared for -- a 97 .. ? not much more than that, maybe $4ish, Maybe some change to go along with it, maybe ..

Good luck, let me know ..

We all know that you will get more money with a private sale as opposed to a trade-in, but is anybody actually doing it? The number of private party ads in the local newspaper has really dropped, and all of the online selling sites are dominated with car dealers.

I think I will have better luck putting a "For Sale" sign in the window.

Searching for a private sale used car is just as frustrating.

Thanks for your quick response. OUCH! Why such a difference between KKB and Edmunds and what you think. Is it because the car will go to auction? Just curious as I have no idea.
  • jaserbjaserb Member Posts: 820
Maybe it's because those lil' Dodge minivans are known far and wide for dumping their tranny anywhere between 90k and 120k miles. Not the kind of thing that shows up in the books but you better believe a used car manager will know about it, as it's about a $2-3k bill when (generally not if) it happens.

also, high mileage is always a problem on a common car, since you are competing with other similar ones with 10-50K less on the odo.

Of course, Hondas seem to be somewhat immune from this law, by Chysler minivans certainly aren't.

...the used car market is flooded with Caravans. Plus this caravan has 100K miles and KBB, Edmunds, et. al. tend to overestimate the prices on high-mileage vehicles (they're quite optimistic). What seems like average miles to you or I is a ton of miles at an auction (anything over 12,000 a year).
  • cstowecstowe Member Posts: 101
I would really like the board (not Steve) to give me some opinions on this...

    Reminder:
1996 Silver Acura TL 3.2, leather, CD, automatic AC, but NO SLIDER...11,500 miles here in New Orleans.

Well, I went to test drive the Acura this weekend. And it looks like a car with 11K miles should, new, except that it is seven years and two body styles old. I asked the dealer what the story was with the low miles and she said 'old lady, wealthy family, never drove it, blah, blah blah.' I did not ask if she was originally from the Pasadena area.

Bottom line is the car is pretty clean but it is not the "premium" edition which means no slider. Kind of a bummer because I am not DYING to drive a 1996 TL... but with only 11.5K miles I figure I can drive it for 3-4 years, put 60-70K on it, and still sell it for 5k easy.

They are asking 12,9 but I am thinking somewhere between 10.5/11.5...

I will get a carfax and take it on a long drive (by an Acura dealer) before I do anything.

The Edmunds trade value falls square in the middle of the range Terry gave you, if you rank condition as average.
For a used car to get better than average money, in this market (tons of new cars at year end discount and tons of used cars homeless) in trade on a hot new model like the Sienna, it would need to be very, very special looking indeed.
I'd clean it up good and sell it in the paper for an extra $1.5K to someone else reading the books.

FWIW, KBB seems to run high; and you have to be conservative in condition rating to get a valid number out of Edmunds.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
... about the only reason to read the books is that you know the other guy is reading them. Since the books routinely flub the mileage, and conveniently neglect to mention that there is no such thing as a "clean" 100k car, this can work in one's favor on clean low-milers.
