    I know, I know, I'm a pest, but a cute pest....hehehe. Anyway......we have run into a bit of a delema.

I dropped the Chevy off at a car lot on Monday to consign it, they said it was contingent on the truck passing their safety inspection.....well, 5 days later I drop by there and they say take your truck, we refuse to consign it. Huh? They inspected the truck and said that the rear main is leaking, the oil pan gasket is leaking, and the turbo is starting to seep. Um, yeah, we told them all that on Monday, they said leaks were no biggie since they weren't that bad.....leaks about a quart of oil every 3k and never leaves spots on the ground. They want all that fixed now before they will sell it for us. Took it to another place, they wanted $200 upfront to put it on their lot for 30 days. Dropped by one other place, but it gave me the creeps so I brought the truck home.

Now, the problem, I live 100 miles from town and it looks like I will be selling it myself. How the heck do I word the ad on this monster so it will get attention and maybe get sold?

I'd like to see $5k in my hand, the leaks are really the only problems the truck has other than it might need front brakes and it needs shocks.

Thanks for any wisdom here, I'm stumped.

If it's a "safety" inspection, why would a minor oil leak mean anything?

Any truck that age will have an oil leak or two and this should be expected.

If it needs front brakes, now that's different.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
I know it, made no sense to me. The truck runs really well and is in average condition for its age. I looked around at what was on their lot and my truck is in better shape than 3/4 of the trucks sitting there. I wanted them to consign it for $5000, the truck books for $8150, so its not like I was asking them to put top $$$ on it.

Pissed me off though, my husband said any business they might have gotten from us is gone. So, have no idea what to do with the truck now.

prodigal, i think that is, for the most part, true, but not always. i think in beedublu's case, its a valid question due to this being a 10 year old ford. could very well be that dropping 3 bills on it won't equate to 3 more at trade time. but i definitely look to the experts on this one.

Got me, there isn't many good running 6.5L TD's around and the ones that are go for $10-$12k. This one is *cheap* compared to what the market is. They wanted nothing to do with it, I was stunned. Seems to be the way it goes I guess.

Hubby is kind of wanting to keep it now......of course I'm ready to smack him, he wanted that Dodge so bad, got that, and now he wants to keep the Chevy too. How many trucks does one man need anyway??

Well, the 03 MDX deal fell through (big surprise), the dealership (I have another word for them but you won't allow me to use it) sold it for $40,5. ( went by there today... notice a whole bunch of 04 there weren't there 1 week ago..hmmmm).

Anyway, came across another potential deal. A 03 MDX ( leftover.. new.. never titled)with black interior and exterior and only 188 miles. Dealer wants $38,5 but only wants to give me $10,- $10,8 maybe $11,000 for my trade in, says he has to wholesale it out( $13 to $11 my poor trade-in is getting less and less... darn HID thieves). What do you think Terry? Does it sound like a good deal? Maybe I should just try to sell my car on my own and wait until the middle of December or January to try to purchase a pre-owned 03 MDX? If If I waited until late December/early January wouldn't the 03 MDX had depreciated a whole year and I would have avoided that hit to my wallet?

Thanks for all your help and advice.

........ What the heck is going on up there ..? .. it looked like such a nice placid area when I was there (of course you can't see much from a cruise ship) .. rear main is leaking ..? .. really .? .. that's hard to believe, it only has 150k and you guys have more mountains, rocks, hills, bumps, holes, tree's, unpaved roads than Costa Rica ... aaagh yeah, your going to have some leaks there, they should make Alaska the test grounds for the A1 Abrams tanks .... why didn't the guy call you, fix it, bill you and it would be sold by now ..? .. Who runs this place, Carl the Caveman ..? gheeez ...

Why don't you make some phone calls to some BIG restaurants, gas stations, Wal Mart, supermarkets and talk with the store Mgr and tell them you will give them $200 for a months use .. get it detailed, nice Big bright signs and cut this dude from the herd before your up to your eyeballs in snow .... you use to be in the car biz, remember ..?

....... Right now I don't feel the "new" 03 is the way to go .. the last deal was fair on both sides, but it didn't happen, you should be looking at an 04 ...

Forget the all that MSRP stuff, trade value, etc .. you should be looking at the *difference* figure, your vehicle and X amount of bucks .. depending on the *options on a 04, you should be trading for your vehicle and "in and around" $28ish, but I need to know the options .. or, just wait til around the middle of December when the tumbleweeds are blowing through the showrooms and go from there ..... :)

Well, I don't really want to park the thing where I can't see it or where its not under the care of someone trusted. Not that its actually anything a thief would want, but they do like to bust out windows in Fairbanks.

As for the car lot, I think they just didn't want it on their lot, it was a threat to the ones they already had there cause its nicer, lol. We knew the rear main was leaking, heck, the truck's got 150k on it. However, we've been under it, and that rear main ain't leaking bad enough to warrant changing it really.

I think I'm gonna slap a little ad in the paper and put a $5900 price tag on the old girl and see what happens. If someone comes down and offers $5k/$5.5k they just bought themselves a truck, but if no bites, then well, we are just gonna have to expand the yard I guess. Parking 3 vehicles in space meant for 2 is a challange.

I pick on this truck all the time, but it really does run very well and despite all the repairs its only left us once and that was our fault.......did you know that a diesel can go almost 200 miles after the alternator goes out?? That was pulling a horse trailer too, lol.

Its one of those things that ya never thought you needed to know, lol. We almost made it home that day, got close, just 10 miles from the house.

At least it wasn't wintertime. Speaking of winter, holy cow, we've gotten a foot of snow here lately, our driveway is 4x4 only at the moment. They are calling for another 2-4 inches tonight.

    Hi Terry,

Do you know how the 03's or 02' on the Q are doing at the auctions? Might be in the market and seeing dealerships with big price gaps on these models. I have seen 02 Q's going from 35-40 with about 20-30k on the clock and the navigation packages, is this about what should expect?

    Thanks!!
  • dcyndcyn Member Posts: 17
    Thanks for your advice Terry.

I think I'll wait a few weeks to see if I can grab a good deal.

As for the 04" MDX ( I would want the touring w/ navigation model, no added accessories)unfortunately, its out of my budget range. I would prefer not to have to come up with more than $25,5 in bucks.

I just figured with the 03 MDX ( touring w/navigation), would fit into my budget and I could possibly grab a good deal since the year is almost over. My biggest problem is I can't get a DECENT trade-in value ..I'm not about to take $8 or $11 for 99 Acura TL,w/nav, deep emerald green, Lo jack and 33900 miles.. that would be a blatant mugging). During these next few weeks I'm going on an all out selling binge,I'll list it for $16,5. How's that figure sound ,Terry? You think it might bring in a quick sale?

    Thanks loads for the advice!

    Some specifics:

It's a V-6, no leather or moonroof. Just the usual power windows/locks/seat, factory stereo, aluminum wheels. 60K miles. And it *is* in excellent condition. Really! Zero rust, paint is flawless (except for a few stone chips under the front bumper). AC works well and no engine/transmission issues. Aquatred tires w/27K miles and plenty of tread.

Having written all that, I almost don't want to trade it now. ;-) But it's not the most practical vehicle now; I could really use 4 doors for backseat passengers and I'm doing a lot of winter driving -- something this car isn't real good at.
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
no offense, but "excellent" means the dealer just has to rinse off the dust and put a sale tag on it.

"except for a few stone chips under the front bumper" - those will have to be touched up - a customer will want those fixed as part of the deal, I guarantee, so deduct $100-200.

"Aquatred tires w/27K miles and plenty of tread" -
many consumers expect a set of NEW tires, not 27K tires, so deduct $400.

"I'm doing a lot of winter driving -- something this car isn't real good at" - Yes, and this is November 23rd, everywhere in the nation.

Not to pick on you, but it's winter time - a heavy, rear drive car could sit all winter while people freak out and buy Subaru Outbacks - things the dealers have to take into consideration.

    ....... Okay there Mr. Excellent, unless it's a 03 Lexus LS430 with around 3,000 miles then your not even close to excellent ... might I add, it's a 94, not a 04 ..?

But anyway it's a V6, no leather and we don't have a slider .. probably needs tires, got some love bug damage and based on what you are telling us it needs $300 worth of "stuff" .. you didn't tell me where you live, so if it's north of the Mason/Dixon line and with snow starting to appear, 2dr Rwd's start selling like Patio furniture .. trade side, in and around that $1,0/$1,500 range, maybe .. down Retail Rd, a great Ad, get it repaired, super detail and $3,900 "asking" and say "see ya" at $2,5/$3,5 ... the miles save it, if it had a 100k you wouldn't want to know ... :)

Good luck and let us know ..

..... The loaded up 02 Q's with 7/9/11k are doing in and around that $33/$34ish range, there not setting fire to any records right now .. the 03 M's are doing about the same .. actually these are pretty nice vehicles, I put about 900 miles on one and liked it alot, well built, quiet, quick .. 1 flaw, there so darn "unattractive", they are like Honda Elements, you just hafta sneak up on them to put gas in em' .. but, that's just my own stupid humble opinion.

Thanks for your input, guys, and no offense taken. Granted, it isn't the trendiest or most desirable vehicle these days, even if this were middle of June. But when I say "excellent", I mean excellent *for what it is*. And it's obviously not a 3000 mile, '03 Lexus. (If it were, why would I be getting rid of it?) :-)

    "...if it had a 100k you wouldn't want to know ... :)"

Most '94 cars will have over 100K miles, why would anyone expect less? Average annual mileage is 17,000, so the "less than 10K a year car" is as common as the "old lady driven only on Sunday" used car.

In NJ. Red, LS (6 speed, leather), tan guts and top. 29,000 miles.

Oh great oracle, what would this toy be doing as winter approaches, and what do you think the magic kick it out the door price is (it is at a Ford dealer)?

Also, how much difference for the same car, but base (5 speed, cloth)? Just trying to guage the relative difference.

While I am new to the Edmunds area, I am not to the car business. The most misunderstood issue is 'Where do the online services get the trade-in values in the first place'?

Reality is this: Your car is worth $10,000 per the dealer's offer. You want $12,000. You both settle on $11,150. Dealer knows that he can't get more than $10,000 wholesale, but he gets his $1150 from you in some other way.

Guess what gets reported to the 'book color du jour'? $11,150. Is that what it is worth. NOPE! $10,000 folks. You paid the $1150 somewhere either in the financing, price of the new car, or in overpriced options.

Remember, the trade-in value solely depends on what you are trading against and how much markup they have to play with. Your best bet is to get auction values if you can. Like in the stock market, 'that is the price that an actual trade took place'.

...... $16,5, eh', it's a little on the high side, maybe $15,9 ..? .. it's not the "asking" price, it's the selling price .. just make sure you have a great ad, super clean, all the records and "park" your ego at the door .. if you see $14,5 grab it, remember it's has a little repaint, it's a 99 and you need to be "at least" $1,000 less than any dealer prices, unless your taking trades in ..... :)

KBB can only be explained by a LOT of Scotch.

But I've read repeatedly that NADA trade-in and retail prices involve some sort of feedback from car dealers on actual transaction figures. If that's the case, than something hinky has to be going on, 'cuz the NADA is usually hopelessly inflated both on the retail and the trade-in side.

Now if I only could remember who always says "the only difference that makes a difference is the difference?"

The red Miata is listed at (IIRC) 14,995. So, sound like it might be reasonably on the money.

So, sounds like a plan is wait for a cold day, and start at 13.5 if its in the wrapper, and maybe push to 14?

Also, just for the heck of it, what would the same car do if it was a 2000, with maybe 35K? Just trying to see if it is worth dropping down a year.

I know, I know, Audis cost a ton to fix.

Pluses: This one is running very well at 72300 miles. Leather, heated seats, moon roof, Bose, new tires, a/c, power windows, power locks all work fine.

Minuses: Dark green (but I like it--British racing green), some paint chips, a couple of broken light switches, back in 97 it was in a crash.

I'd like to trade this in in San Diego for either a new G35, TL, BMW 3-series, or another A4 3.0. Which of these do you think will be most reliable and keep its value best?

Thanks a lot for all your entertaining and useful posts!

........ I dunno, how about this ~ **back in 97 it was in a crash**

Was it Granny crash .. you know, where the little ol' lady cruises by with the poodle on her lap at 3mph and bang, creases the bumper for $150 .? .. or, was it one of those where the guy is chewing tobacco and rolls out of his parking spot about 10mph and slams the fender for $700 .. ? .. or was it a "full tilt boogie" coming at ya sideways, see your life pass in front of ya and you get a bill for $9,500 for the view types ..?

...... I have no idea where they compile their info .. on "any" given day It can Nada, KBB, BB, FBI, CIA, MIA, UAW, MSU, that has the most accurate figures ..

I check em' all the time and sometimes I wonder who/what/where the *^#% they get that info .. the funny part is, it's not just the consumers it's also the dealers .. take a dealer, UCMgr, etc and take him outside of the nice office suit and tie, drop them in front of 3,000 vehicles and Bang, they get the "dead mullet look" and will pay stupid money for most vehicles .... like I always say, you can always tell the difference between a dealer that "thinks" he knows what a vehicle is worth and one that "knows" what a vehicle is worth .. the one that knows, doesn't have a Zillion paper cuts on their fingers .l.o.l...

Terry: I saw one of the Miatas that I asked about, and the details are a little different. i have to decide shortly on an offer, so what say you? They have come down to $11,995 so far, but is there more squeeze?

2001 Miata, base model, Red, black top and cloth seats. CD, Keyless, that looks to be all the option. 5 speed of course.

43,000k on it (not the 29K in the ad). Steep, but will even out with my 3k/year.

Looked good enough to my untrained eye, but I will have it checked out of course. Still under warranty for a little bit.

Assuming its is mechanically and body wise clean, whats the deal in NJ (it's even cold today).

$6 grand huh ..? hard to say, this is a "look see" vehicle, Jags, like most of the high ends are Very sensitive to this type of work .. I would have to have a feely touchy to be accurate .. miles are kinda ok, right color, seats have to be hovered in, service has to be 120%, sneakers from yesterday, it's gotta be stand tall ...

Without seeing it, but "lets just say" the work is puuuurfect, all the #'s, no overspray, Mr. King Kong did the work himself, somewhere in and around the $15's, could even stretch towards $16, Maybe ...

I am getting ready to purchase a new 2004 Lexus AWD with the Navigation System/Mark Levinson Audio Package for one of my drivers. I was quoted $42k for a vehicle that included the towing package, the 18" Aluminum alloy and the heated seats. I think I got a good price on the car. I am in the Chicagoland area.

The driver is bulking at the towing package and the wheels as he does not think that they are necessary. My argument is that when you buy a luxury vehicle on the used market, buyers are looking for a loaded vehicle with all of the bells and whistles. And I am the one that is going to have to sell the beast at the end of the lease.

    Two questions:

    1) Am I right?
    2) What should I be able to sell the car for 36 months from now at auction and retail assuming normal wear and tear?

Terry, fire up your crystal ball!! (g) This is kind of a backwards question.

but what is the Jag worth without the accident history. I'm just curious to know, that's all. just in case i find myself in the market for a used xj8 (of course, hearing about all the problems the above poster has.... not so sure).

Bill when he was around loved these jags. Well he also liked those vauxhaulmeaway things too lol. I am looking for a nice 04 "certified" XJR in 2.5 years. Counting on that jaguar depreciation I should be looking at a 50% discount or more from list. Not bad driving a 70k car for half the change. Also may try out the new 7 series as they aren't setting any fires as terry says.

    ..... **Vauxhaulmeaway** .. l.o.l. that's a new one on me, I always thought they were called Vauxenslobbins ... :)

The Jags make great vehicles, Used. Right now, 03 XJR's with miles in the 5/6k range, the "baby dolls" are doing around the $44/$45 range, is that cheap enough for ya .... ?
