"Edmund's says its worth $12,600 and KBB is putting $11,135 on it. Which is correct?"
NEITHER. Not one of these entities has the ability to actually BUY a car, nor can they actually dictate what a dealership or private party is required to PAY for a car. Set that thought aside, just for info.
Good example of Nada trade in values being nuts, it says our 1994 Chevy K3500 6.5L TD manual transmission reg cab/long bed 4x4 with 158k on it is worth $4k on trade.
YEAH RIGHT, I don't think any dealer in thier right or wrong mind would give that for it. I did have an offer of $3200 from a dealer last fall, cash buy, not trade.
Of course now is a yard ornament until we cough up the cash to fix it.
Would he be looking up your value on Edmund's and/or KBB? Would you be a trade in or would he be selling you on retail road? Sorry couldn't resist. :-)
As always I am continuely hopefully for a turn around in luck for you ( especially in vehicles:-).
I think we are destined to have bad luck with cars, if it isn't something that is the car's fault, then its something someone else did to it.
Thankfully our Dodge seems to be no worse for the wear after the body shop put the wrong tranny fluid in it. After they had the dodge dealer flush it out and change the filter everything seems normal again.
My Explorer turned 10k yesterday, its been excellent other than some silly quirks.
Now the Chevy.......well, um, no comment there, except that this isn't its fault.
Since this is a new (redesigned for 2004) vehicle that is at or near the top of its class, I would suspect that new and used ones are scarce everywhere, and Terry took that into account when providing his figures.
I'm just trying to look down the road a bit because the radio in my 95 325iC seems to have died an ugly death. Does it matter at trade or sale time if it has a BMW radio or is it ok if it has a "non-cheesy" aftermarket radio- no led's or wierd colors, just your basic black radio.
Tanks Terry. I'll keep you posted. Was sort of looking for numbers confirmation. Like I said, need to decide between a used airport bus, or a new pick-up, or go-for-broke 'Burb or Excursion, and whether to keep the Exploder with any of the above.
I asked about this last fall, but now my better half is serious about getting a new(er) vehicle before our family grows by one more this summer. This is a prime candidate for retail road, although a dealer friend of mine has offered to put it on his lot as a consignment piece also. We haven't decided, but it kind of depends on the numbers. Anyway, the vitals:
1997 Mercedes C230 smoke silver (that champagne color) over Parchment MB TEX 80,2xx miles slider, auto, AM/FM/cassette but no CD new Continental shoes with about 5,000 miles on them it is a southern car all it's life, so no snow or salt and no paintwork of any kind. Since I've been reading this board, I just had it detailed so it shines. Overall, it's in excellent shape for a seven year old car, a few VERY minor scratches and rock chips on the hood and trunk lid, but looks great. People that see it are surprised it is as old as it is. For retail road, it also has a transferable warranty to 100,000 miles, which I know makes no difference on a trade. I also have all the service records since we bought it, and 90% of the stamps in the service book from the previous owner. The car lives in Brunswick, GA, which is halfway between Savannah and Jacksonville, Fla. Thank you for all your help and an always interesting morning reading!
My husband and I need to sell two vehicles. We financed both and have paid a little more than half of what we owe on each car. But we're expecting a new baby, and the Ranger has no safe spot for an infant seat, so it has to go. And the Beetle is probably too small for our needs at this point. We've already bought a used SUV from a family member that will be mine. So now we need to get down to just one car for my husband, and we really would like to get rid of the car payments!
We know we're still probably upside down on both the VW and the Ranger, but we don't know by how much. So we have a couple of questions:
1. Could we do a "reverse trade" with a dealer? For instance, could we trade the Beetle for an older, high mileage minivan worth less than the Beetle is, and end up with some cash out of the deal to help us pay off what we owe? Or would we be better off selling the Beetle on our own and then buying a used minivan for cash?
2. How do you go about the money part of selling a car privately? When do you let the buyer take the car away? If you ask for time for a check to clear, what guarantee does the buyer have that you won't just take their money and never give them the car? What do people usually do?
3. How do you sell a car that you still owe payments on, but that you'll be able to pay off once you have the buyer's cash? When/how do you sign over the title?
And of course, we want to know what my VW and my husband's truck are worth. We are most likely to try to sell them on our own if we can. But we can't afford to pay both cars off first and sell them second.
1998 Ford Ranger Limited. 100K miles (my husband commutes 90 miles a day, aaagh!), red, manual shift (aaagh again, I know), extended cab, V6, 4WD with off road package, power locks & windows, alarm system, remote keyless entry.
2001 VW New Beetle GLS. 38K miles, silver, manual shift, 2.0 L gas engine, with three added options: sunroof, premium sound package, and heated seats & mirrors. Has all the stuff standard on Beetles like power windows, alarm, etc. It's had a dent on the rocker panel fixed.
We're in Cincinnati, Ohio.
We love driving stick shifts and didn't intend to sell either of these (we love them and hate parting with them) - until we saw how much room baby stuff takes up. Arggh. Anyway, thank you so much!
first of all... #1 will be impossible unless you know magic. If you trade a car worth more than you owe, you'll still owe it. you'll have to pay-off the loan on the car you are trading. What most dealers do is then roll, what is known as "negative equity", into the newer (or in your case, older) vehicle you are purchasing, and then you pay xxx.xx per month for x years on the car you purchase. No way you will be able to get cash back.
We have a 1998 Hyundai Elantra that we bought in 2001. It was a good buy for us at the time, but in hindsight, it brought a lot of baggage with it. We also have a 2001 Hyundai Accent that was purchased in 2003. Now that we're trying to trim down payments and consolidate into one vehicle, I'm out doing some research.
#1 What can we realistically expect for trade-in on the vehicles?
#1a 1998 Hyundai Elantra GLS Sedan (white; 96,000 miles; standard transmission; power windows/locks; AM/FM/CD system; air conditioning; ABS; cruise control; rear spoiler; has hail damage; previous owners were smokers, roof reflects this; rear window tint is bubbling)
#1b 2001 Hyundai Accent 2 DR GS Hatchback (gray; 26,000 miles; standard transmission; power windows/locks/mirrors; AM/FM/CD system; air conditioning; ABS; rear spoiler; no interior or exterior damage)
#2 Is it possible to trade two vehicles in towards the purchase of one new/used vehicle?
I'm not a dealer (I just play one on the internet), but in theory, you can trade in as many cars as you want. In effect, the purchase and trade in are 2 separate transaction, since you could sell your car to the dealer without buyin a new one. There can be tax advantages to combining the deals (the imfamous trade in credit), but they do stand alone.
Given that, no dealer is going to want the '98 as described, so you are going to see real low offers on that one ($500?). The '01, if I had to guess, would be a better candidate for retail road than a trade in, given the low miles.
You might just be financially better off selling the '98 yourself, and put down what you get against the loan on the '01.
I think selling retail when you don't have the title is just plain nasty, and one reason that people trade in so often. Short of taking out a s/t loan to pay off the car loan (and get the title), you really need to coordinate through the bank or finance company that holds the note.
One problem to me (if I was buying) is having to wait for the title so I can get the car registered. Dealers take care of this all the time, and can issue temp tags while the paperwork gets done, but a private seller can't do the same.
The $$ is easier. Just get certified funds (or cash for cheaper cars). Of course, if the buyer has to get a loan, than you are back to coordinating with a lender, that will want to see a title, etc.
This all makes driving in to a dealer with a payment book and driving out 1/2 hour later with a new car look downright pleasant.
I'll post it in here too, in case someone else wants to respond:

Ah, I wish I could do magic! Then the truck would turn into a minivan all by itself. Nope, sadly, we know we still owe what we owe, and that nothing will reduce that amount. Like you said, we won't see the cash if we trade, it will just help lower the amount we finance. We can put some cash down in addition, which will reduce the amount as well. But it will cost us $ to change vehicles in the long run, no matter how you look at it.
Stickguy: Ah, I wondered about that, what peopel did about the titles. Hmm, I hadn't thought of taking out a short-term loan. That might be an option to consider, if we can get any decent amount of money for the cars retail.
....... On any given day a vehicle "might" be worth a little more -or- a little less .. being that travel is increased for vacations and different travel ventures in May through September there might be a dealer that "might" put a few more bucks in the Quest, but if your looking for an extra $1,000 or so I don't think that will happen .....
but don't forget to let me know ............... ;^)
......... Ooooh, where's the good news .. depending on the dealer, it's sounds like the ultra high $3's, low low low $4's .. it will all depend on "IF" the dealer catches the No Air Package, if so they will be thinking in and around the $2,5ish zipcode .. the only thing that saves this dude is the low miles .......
I have a 1999 BMW 323i that I want to trade. It has 81,000 miles, Leather, auto, sunroof, and is EXTRA CLEAN. Edmund's says its worth $12,600 and KBB is putting $11,135 on it. Which is correct?
I would like a Mazda dealer to give me at least $12,600. The vehicle is going through Manheim auctions on average for $13,600 with same year and similar mileage.
What do you think? Chris
______________________
Well, here's a Perfect Example of accurate reporting ....
There's not one BMW 323i with 81,000 miles that has come even close to $12,6 at any part of the country at any of the auctions, let alone Manheim .. aah, I take that back, one or two on the Left Coast in the last 5 months, but those are meaningless figures, where did you read $13,600 ? ....
IF (depends on where you live) it's super clean, looks and gets mistaken for 50k, drives like 50k, feels like 50k, service ended yesterday, rubber was bought last week, no re-paints, no touch here and there, no 350lb owners .. then trade side, in and around the high $10's, low $11's, maybe a the right barometric pressure and Neptunes moon alignments might get you towards that $12,0 figure .... $12,600.? .. maybe if you can catch someone that has been on a 3 day binge, the miles are killing ya here ......... ;-}
On this particular vehicle KBB would be the most accurate, on the next Lexus maybe Edmunds might be more accurate, or perhaps Nada .. I guess the point is, why should I go on TV ...l.o.l.....
........... Depends .. nice vehicles get nice radio's, miled out, repainted, I need round things and you can hardly see where you ran over that telephone pole in 01 .. well those kinds, it just doesn't make any difference, now does it ...?
I have a Volvo wagon I am about to trade in and would like to know how much I should expect to receive for it. The details are as follows:
2001 Volvo V70 T5 Automatic 5-Speed Transmission 53,500 Miles Black with Tan Leather Interior Sport Seats Upgraded Stereo with 3 CD Changer Third Row Seat Built in Child Booster Seats (2) in 2nd Row Sunroof Premium Wheels One owner, never wrecked Good condition Located in Georgia
Edmunds says $21,590 and Kelly's says $17,280, which to me is a big difference. We've been told by two dealers that they would give us approximately $16,500 for it, but would have to see it first to say for sure. (We trading for an Infiniti, don't have a dealership in town, so doing research over phone.) This sounds low to me, but I have no idea what to expect. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
<<There isn't one source that's more accurate than the other one ~ I would have to Rat on all of them .. .l.o.l......>>
LOL.....My thoughts exactly. Sorry to the folks that run this sight, love the info. and msg boards, but based on my experiences, neither Edmunds or KBB prices reflect real world trade in values.
Nice vehicles .. miles are a little on the tall side and the color is ho-hum for the area .. depending on the dealer and it being springtime and being "Located in Georgia" I have a feeling you might be seeing some low numbers, but $16,5ish seems a little on the low low low side (no accidents, all the service, no repaints, no funny stuff, deep rubber.?) .. maybe the mid to high $18's maybe ...... the biggest problem is the area, up north in the Milwaukee, Chicago, Philly area their still seeing big numbers which I understand, but $16,5 ..?
......... 1997 C230 with 80k, right color, no cd, but new sneakers, no runs no hit's no errors and all the service ... these aren't breaking any sales records, if it's as nice as you say it is, then trade side in and around the $6's, might "maybe" see $7,0 if everything is going your way and you haven't been missing Church ...
Me personally, down Retail Rd .. great and superb Ad, wonderful detail (or you can put a nice touch-up on it) $9,999 *asking* and cut it loose for the first $8,5/$9,5 .. the miles kill it and the warranty saves it ...............
........ Good article, but the only problem is: this isn't new news ... it's like saying they just found a cure for Polio.
You could change the date on the article to April 18th 2000 or April 18th 1998 .. "Two recent studies have shown that nearly a third or more of new car buyers come into showrooms owing more on their cars than they are offered in trade. But that does not stop them." .... ok, where the heck have they been for the last 10 years ..l.o.l...........
Do the bigger rebates and incentives help.? Heck No .. but folks today are also trying to trade every 28 months (sometimes less) 10 years ago they were trying to trade about every 40 months and the more they trade, the less $$ they want to put down .. of course we also have 28 year old buyers trying to purchase $250,000 homes, now they may not have any furniture for that home, but at least they have it ................. ;^}
Terry: This is a dark green GT Wagon, in Minnesota, 5 speed--GT package is power windows, remote, sunroof, rack. No CD or Leather. Mileage is 103,000. Car is in good shape. No dings or bumps. glossy paint. Upholstery is fine. Tires nearly new. Mechanical work done mostly on schedule. Heads replaced. Plan to trade on a new Subaru. Trade in value is reported to be in the range of $6,000 to 7,600.
** Heads replaced ** .. oh, that's kind of a rare bird on a Subu ... .... in the land of the Vikings we have a handshaker, we have a ho-hum color, no hydes no cd and bunches of miles, with summer "maybe" approaching up there, trade side in and around the high $5's, low $6's ... the miles and the handshaker in a wagon will not be your friend here ..
Don't forget to let me know how things go .................. ;-)

Your comment on 28 year olds buying $250k houses made me chuckle. While not 28 (29, actually), in my neighborhood in Boston, $250k won't buy you a decent studio apt. My place is worth $280-290k, and it's 460sqft. Anyway, on a monthly basis, at current rates, the mortage on a $250k home, after tax, is only about $1k. I pay a heck of a lot more than that in rent.
I'm NW of Boston just outside of 128. There's a new subdivision going in at the end of my street with starter castles from $799K. A neighbor told me that a woman who graduated from high school with his daughter about 9 years ago is buying her first home in this subdivision. With 20% down and 5% interest, you're talking almost $3500 a month for the mortgage!! Now I don't know the details but as you know - that's how it is in Boston.
I grew up northwest of Boston outside Rt.128 and graduated from HS 10 years ago (North Middlesex Regional.) It's those prices that keep me living in the midwest... Crikey.
I did a search on Preludes but most seemed like they were high miles in bad to middling condition.
Just curious as to whether I should sell this or trade in?
Prelude Si 4WS, 1993 Blue Green 89,000 miles 5 spd black cloth interior
in dash CD player/speakers (after market - Alpine)
interior is in great shape, a little faded due to being black
timing belt has been replaced
clutch has never been replaced
new brakes
all documentation for on time oil changes, work etc
only premium (highest rated fuel used (not sure if anyone cares about that!?)
SE region (SC)
exterior: power antenna is currently broken (needs replacing - should I before selling?)
some VERY minor dings, but I recently had it buffed, so paint looks awesome, plus a small accident had hood replaced (hood paint is new). Some bad cracking/fading on trim around exterior windows...rubber trim is also coming undone around windows alum wheels look great, no damage
I feel a lot of things are about to "go" - clutch, A/C, AWS, etc...should I get those fixed first? Car is a little sluggish compared to what it used to be.
needs tune up/prob new plugs and wires
I personally loved the car, esp. the AWS...in my opinion an undervalued feature. Will be sad to see it go!
Thanks for the response, and I considered selling myself, but acc. to Edmunds, if I plug in values, there is less than $1,000 between trade in and private party value. Just wondering if it would be worth the hassle of selling it myself.
........ Miles are super low for the year, you won't be getting much help from the "handshaker", sounds like it needs some basic stuff, tune-up, maybe a clutch, it probably could use an antenna ... trade side, in and around the high $2's, might get real lucky and see the low low $3's ...
Down the path to Retail Rd, super Ad, pro detail, get the little stuff fixed, $5,900 *asking* won't last long in SC for the first $4,9/$5,5 .....

Thanks!
Let me know how it goes ...

Me personally, down Retail Rd .. great and superb Ad, wonderful detail (or you can put a nice touch-up on it) $9,999 *asking* and cut it loose for the first $8,5/$9,5 .. the miles kill it and the warranty saves it ...............

Do the bigger rebates and incentives help.? Heck No .. but folks today are also trying to trade every 28 months (sometimes less) 10 years ago they were trying to trade about every 40 months and the more they trade, the less $$ they want to put down .. of course we also have 28 year old buyers trying to purchase $250,000 homes, now they may not have any furniture for that home, but at least they have it ................. ;^}

This is a dark green GT Wagon, in Minnesota, 5 speed--GT package is power windows, remote, sunroof, rack. No CD or Leather. Mileage is 103,000. Car is in good shape. No dings or bumps. glossy paint. Upholstery is fine. Tires nearly new. Mechanical work done mostly on schedule. Heads replaced. Plan to trade on a new Subaru. Trade in value is reported to be in the range of $6,000 to 7,600.
What do you think?
thanks
John
** Heads replaced ** .. oh, that's kind of a rare bird on a Subu ...
Don't forget to let me know how things go .................. ;-)

Just curious as to whether I should sell this or trade in?
Prelude Si 4WS, 1993
Blue Green
89,000 miles
5 spd
black cloth interior
in dash CD player/speakers (after market - Alpine)
interior is in great shape, a little faded due to being black
timing belt has been replaced
clutch has never been replaced
new brakes
all documentation for on time oil changes, work etc
only premium (highest rated fuel used (not sure if anyone cares about that!?)
SE region (SC)
exterior: power antenna is currently broken (needs replacing - should I before selling?)
some VERY minor dings, but I recently had it buffed, so paint looks awesome, plus a small accident had hood replaced (hood paint is new). Some bad cracking/fading on trim around exterior windows...rubber trim is also coming undone around windows
alum wheels look great, no damage
I feel a lot of things are about to "go" - clutch, A/C, AWS, etc...should I get those fixed first? Car is a little sluggish compared to what it used to be.
needs tune up/prob new plugs and wires
I personally loved the car, esp. the AWS...in my opinion an undervalued feature. Will be sad to see it go!
Thanks in advance any price thoughts on this.
