The Lakers still deserve some credit for making it to the finals even with all of Kobe's legal troubles this year.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 264,561
Nope...won't give them one ounce of credit.. I really hate that crap about the long suffering player who really deserves to get a championship in his last year. If Malone and Payton were that great, they should have led their own team to championships, instead of riding the backs of Kobe and Shaq (who has an Escalade, to stay on topic).

I only watched a brief portion of the game but knew almost instantly it wasn't meant to be for the Lakers. Phil Jackson was a very unhappy camper.

    Hi Terry,

If you would be so kind to provide your expertise regarding our situation below, it would be much appreciated.

We're trying to sell our 2001 Honda Civic EX sedan with auto and side airbags. It's silver with gray interior and has 30,600 miles. The car is in good shape except for a couple of dings and scratches. It has new front brake pads and just had the 30k service done. We're located in northern California (SF Bay Area).

What should we ask for with a private-party sale? What should our bottom-line be? A dealer offered $9500 a few months ago. We're hoping to do better if we sell it on our own. Appreciate your help!
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
You didn't like what the guides say, you're really going to be annoyed when Terry gives you a reality check that shows your Oldsmobubble $2k back of those numbers...

Terry: repost from last week, got lost in the shuffle. If you could give me an estimate on it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    '97 Impreza Outback Sport wagon
67,000 miles, up to date on maintenance (dealer serviced updates at 29k, 45k, 60k miles - I bought it used at 29k)
dark green paint, minor scratches (typical inevitable minor parking lot dings), hood repainted 2 years ago (was keyed) - done at dealer's body shop so you can't even tell anything happened to it
    Still looks and rides excellently.
new brakes (front discs, pads + rotors replaced, new rear shoes + drums resurfaced) at ~60k miles (about 7-8 months ago)
    2.2l, automatic transmission, AWD
alloy wheels, A/C, dual front air bags, power windows, roof rack, fog lights, keyless entry, aftermarket CD/mp3 player
clean condition, not perfect but not abused, no accidents
I live in Illinois (near chicago) and purchased her in Michigan, so she has seen her fair share of weather (fortunately not hail) but no real damage and no surface rust.

She still runs excellently, but I am looking to purchase a new car and do not have need of a second vehicle.
Any help with fair market trade-in values would be appreciated so I know what to expect from the local dealers.

It's not so much the the 1k title exchange, it's the KS/MO/TX exchange I would have more of a issue with - this does "not" make it a bad vehicle, but it's had 4 owners, and Bimmers are expensive to maintain, so I would spend the $150(?) to make sure it's a nice driver, instead of spending $3,500 in 5 months to make it right ........

Talk to Mrs. Lance about that one...if it were completely up to me that S90 would have been in my garage in January.

She's the anti-akangl; we paid off the Accord a couple years ago and she's discovered that life without a car payment is kinda nice (and I agree. Or, I would if my '89 weren't aging so rapidly.)

I was beginning to think unless I had a BMW, Audi, etc I was blending in with the wallpaper!

The Intrigue has maybe five door dings and I detail it annually with three waxings in between. This was my first new car and if I knew what GM had in mind, maybe I would have gone for a Camry instead....

If I sell the Olds to Dad, I have my eye on a nice 71 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe with 440, duals and 80K for "funnin' around" with....

Hi Terry. I wm trying to figure out if I am right to feel that I'm getting ripped off. I have a 97 Subaru Legacy wagon with 81,000 miles. I had negoitiated a price for a new Honda Pilot. However, the dealer wanted to subtract the discount off MSRP I had negotiated ($1900) from the Kelley blue book trade-in value ($3400 - for car in fair condition) and only give me $1500. The car runs fine, everything works, and has new brakes. This didn't seem right to me. I did away with any value to my negotiating the discount. Am I being unreasonable? Thanks. Lucy
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
i think they just had no intention of discounting the pilot. unfortunately, they used a seedy tactic to accomplish it.

my advice is to make an OTD offer, and dont worry about where they put the money.

As I understand Terry's post, this car has been titled in 3 states, including TX, with 4 owners, is that correct?

Am I right in thinking this is a real negative with an expensive German car? I know from reading Terry's posts that he knows how picky Bimmer buyers can be (as do I). ANYTHING that seems slightly weird can turn them off. And when you go to sell it, it'll be a 5-owner car. I mean, if this was a 15 y.o. 3 series with 150K miles for $5K it might not matter much, but it's not. Try putting an ad for this Baby in "The Roundel" if you want to sell it in a year or 2: "Only 5 owners, titled in only 3 states"...........oh, man!

All I'm saying is, I wouldn't be so quick to jump into this particular car unless you're getting an extreme bargain.

Also, I once bought a "low mileage" Pontiac in FL that had been thru an auction, & was titled in, TX. Later, when it developed engine trouble, I started to wonder if the mileage had been rolled back. And there was a piece on "60 minutes" about 10 years ago about Texas auctions & Titles & related chicanery.

Maybe Terry or some of the other knowledgeable people here could respond to some of this? This car is making me nervous, & I'm not even the one buying it.

    cheers, Woody

Thank you both for taking time to educate me.

This car search is pretty taxing. I was going through the website of the same dealer and noticed a similar colored car pic posted in the "Cars sold before" by the dealership. The vin numbers matched. I think this dealer bought the car off the auction and since then the car has been to multiple customers from his dealership.

Couple of questions: Is it a bad thing to buy a bimmer off auctions ?
There is a place here that works with you and buys stuff for you from auction at a lower price. If this did not work out, I was thinking of going that route.

What would be a fair price for this car. I think I am going to pass on this one or atleast think very hard about it.

What other options are there and what would be a good price for say something like a 99-00 saab 9-3 convertible. I a few pages ago Terry advising someone on buying saab conv for cheap. What would it run?
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I think buying a used 328iC is a great idea; it's on my short list of a possible 2nd car to buy. Buying a one or 2 owner car is a good idea, & the more documentation it has (service records, inc. the "stamps" in the service booklet), the better. Basically, take your time, if possible, & examine EVERYTHING about every car you're considering: possible former body work, history, etc. Even with a BMW CPO car. And low miles are good too, (duh). The latest used bmw I purchased had 11K miles, & was sold & serviced by the same dealer, one owner, & "glowed in the dark", as Terry would say.

    A Saab 9-3.........personally I'd pick a used bmw 3-series instead. A 3-series is "probably" more reliable, & depreciates less.

Check out www.roadfly.org; & ask some of these questions on one of the 3-series boards, depending on which year/model you're considering. You will get an education. BTW, have you thought about just buying a brand new Mini? Or that new special hi-perf. Miata? With 17" wheels, etc., for what, $25K? Or a Honda S2000? Buying used takes a lot more research & knowledge.

Sorry if I'm getting OT for this board. And listen to Terry, he's the expert here; & a lot of other knowledgeable people here too.

    good luck!

get the GLT. You'll thank me in the morning. Unless of course it turns out to be a dog, but you're in Iowa, so waht can you really do to me ?

Actually, if it is in nice shape, that sounds like a strong price on the GLT. I would have expected to see it listed at 10,999 at least, but I guess you are in a different market than NJ (don't know if that is good or bad for you , just different).

The 740 has done 15 years, so give it break. And, there can't be too much of a payment on an 8K car (I could see the Mrs. getting upset if you came home with an S60R and a 72 month payment book).

"there can't be too much of a payment on an 8K car"

sure there can...banks wont loan money for long at that age...maybe 24 or 36 months.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
FYI, My company's CU will do 48 months on a '98. I wouldn't want a note that long on a '98, anyway, unless I paid ahead and just had the lower 48-mo. payment available when the month was tight (a distict possibility with two young kids.)
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 264,561
Yeah..lots of places will finance 48 months on ANY used car... Credit unions are cheap.. Bank and finance companies can get very expensive on older cars.. but, my bank is relatively cheap as well.

I just figure that the current car is worth something (2k?), plus most people have some cash available (another 2K?), so now you are down to about 4K +tax/tags. Even at 24/36 months, should be pretty low payments, and if they are still too much, you shouldn't be buying a car (or a pack of gum).

IIRC, 8K over 3 years is about $250/mo. +/-, not usually in the break the bank catagory, but as always, YMMV.

49 months on a 6 year old car? Sounds nuts to me. Pretty soon you end up owing 2K on a '97 Crapalier with 200K on the clock.

In the spirit of letting Terry know, I made a deal tonight. I decided to continue my mid-life crisis by being the first on my block to get a new Scion tC. I had them appraise my Maxima (mostly for laughs), but the hit my magic number so I'll let them have it.

1999 Max SE 5 speed, 48K, average cond. Last appraisal (different Toyota dealer on a Solara) was 6.5. This one hit it at $8,500, which IIRC was Terry's magic number, so they can have it to save me the trouble of selling.

With savings on tax, ad, MV fees, it will be like getting $9,200 private sale, and I don't think (unless the oracle tells me otherwise) I was likely to see above 10K selling it myself.

So, for convenience (and to avoid the pain my wife would subject me to if I had 3 cars of my own, plus her van), they can take it for me. Now, just have to wait for the new one to show up, and hope I fit!

    Terry, you approve?

And just for kicks, I'm taking my Miata in tomorrow to see if they want that one too!

    Hi Terry,
We're trying to sell our 2001 Acura Integra LS coupe with auto, ABS & sunroof. It's light blue and has 17,500 miles. The car is in very good shape except for a few of dings and a scratch. I’m in San Francisco, California 94112.

I am looking to purchase a new Mazda 3s hatchback. What is the reasonable trade-in price for a brand?
What should we ask for with a private-party sale?

It would be much appreciated if you can help me!

Well, Mrs. Lance approved the requisition for either the S70 or S90 (my choice...) the catch (you knew there was one) is that I've got to sell the 740 first. So, if anyone needs a well-maintained '89 Volvo 740 5 speed, lemme know. :-)
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Sounds good to me!! Last thing I need to do is go near a car lot. Now the RV dealer is another story.......but hubby is keeping me in line there with his "we must stick to the plan" speech.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
Where would you peg this one for a private party sale, Terry?

    1989 Volvo 740 non-turbo, 5 speed.
    Tan over black leather.
    5k on new Bridgestones.
Paint is in as good a condition as one could expect from an '89, ditto the leather (actually the leather is remarkably well-preserved, with no rips and minimal wear along the bottom bolster.) It's got the typical '80s European car maladies of a sagging headliner (I ripped out the fabric, contenplating attempting a fix myself on this one,) cracked dash (show me a 740 without this) and busted A/C (a leak in the line, not the compressor. Thanks for small favors.)
139,000 miles, all records since new. I'm thinkin' this would be a good high schooler's "learn to drive a stick before getting into dad's Bimmer" car or a commuting beater. I'm thinking of having Mrs. Lance drive it down to campus with a For Sale sign in it...the question is, what would be an equitable number to put on the sign?
Obviously I'd give it a good spit 'n' shine.
    Thanks...

Most of the Bimmers from the city of Lost Angels to the streets of Bean city come from the auctions .. dealers can't wait for nice merchandise, so they go to the auctions to buy them .. see, some folks think that nice cars are traded every second of every day, well kinda, but just not everywhere .l.o.l..

A Ford dealer probably doesn't have a use for a nice 530, or a Lexus dealer might be loaded up in nice vehicles that month and can't use another 325 or a 740i, so off to the auction they go .. plus there is oodles of nice clean ones that are coming off lease with low miles and the dealers need to "renew" their inventory, maybe that nice clean Acura just isn't moving, or perhaps that super clean 12k Benz C class just hasn't warmed the cockles of anyones heart, and most "smart" dealers don't like expensive vehicles sitting around 60/90 days, so off they go for a replacement .... but to answer your question, most come from there so I would have no fear -IF- you know the history and you have had it looked at real close, just like any vehicle ................. :)
