I'm buying either an '05 Ody Touring or an '05 Sienna (whatever they end up calling their highest end model). My trade in is a very high (125K miles) 2000 Town & Country Limited with the only option DC offered at the time--a "premium paint"--sort of ivory color with a nice iridescence--I think they called it "pearlized." Got the full set of Chrysler color matched rubber floor mats for front and second row and the deep color-matched plastic tray liner for cargo area. No after market changes. No wrecks but several small parking lot dings and one "fanny" shaped dent in door where a friend slammed his behind into the sliding door in order to close it. You have to look hard to see it, but from an angle you can see a foot wide dent. Didn't try to repair it. Both the front and rear plastic bumpers have several scratches low near the bottoms where we pulled up too closely to various curbs. Car looks good from ten feet away but up close you can see bug stains on the "nose." The trip computer right now says that it's getting about 19 mpg and it runs well. The current set of tires has about 10K on them. Driven mostly without kids in it--there are NO stains or signs of wear on the carpet or leather upholstery, but there is a 1 mm scratch on the dash and the driver's seat has a very slightly "broken in" look compared to the other seats. I'd appreciate an idea of what a trade in allowance might be in a suburban dealership in Texas. Thanks for your help.
I would like to know what you think I can expect as a trade for my 2001 Subaru Forester...
Unlike all the others I saw listed here, mine has had some body work: in 2002 I was sandwiched and the front and rear were repaired. In 2003 the front and rear doors were "keyed" and repainted, and this past march I was rear ended again; the rear repaired, then a week after that my neighbor backed into the rear AGAIN...repaired. Not because it's been so battered (I wasn't injured despite being pregnant during both impacts; I feel the car protected me well) but because now with 2 kids in car seats I need more space and want a mini-van.
Because of the repaint on the front hood, it now has lots of little rock pocks, as do the lower plastic panels on the front doors, there's a small ding on the driver door.
New Brakes (last month) and new tires within the last 6 months. Oil changed every 3k-5k (have records).
Silver exterior, cloth seats (no stains despite the kids), 6 cd changer, heated seats & mirrors, moonroof, side airbags, auto dim mirror, and upgraded front grill. Real close to 59,000 miles. I live in Long Beach...driving to San Francisco this weekend. Will I do better in So. Cal or No. Cal? Looking to trade for a 97ish Dodge Grand Caravan.
..... Thank you .. we're locked and loaded, full tanks and all the stuff ... now, if I can get my g/f out of the bathroom before 8am, thats the hard part -- but thats why God made Duct tape ...........
...and Godspeed. At work, our Melbourne, FL offices and Miami Airport service base have closed until after Labor Day, with the occupants (hopefully) getting well out of Dodge. Good luck to Terry and all the Floridians here.
Have been through a hurricane twice (very scary), but nothing like what FL is facing right now. Hope everything turns out ok for you and you get back home real soon. Will keep you and everyone in FL in our prayers.
Terry, can you provide me with a valuation on a 2000 Acura 3.5RL. It is loaded and has the navigation system as well. The mileage is 42,000 and the manufacturer's warranty expires at the end of November 2004. It is a one owner car and in excellent condition - with new Michelin tires that were installed about 5,000 miles ago. Thanks for your help.

These are pretty nice drivers .. this one has 42k, tiny miles for the year, we have that nav thing and thats pretty much what you have told me .... ugh, bad description - color - location ..? .. but since I'm still up .......
If this dude is Clean, no paintwork, serviced from day one, no Wal-mart hits, no Popeyes chicken under the seats, no I drove over my aunts fence at the family reunion, it's been waxed, loved and cared for ... if so, then trade side in and around the low/mid $16's, might maybe see a dealer get close to the $17 figure (if it needs stuff, start deducting) .....
Great vehicle down Retail Rd, super detail, incredible 5/6 liner ad in the biggest paper in the area, $19,900 *asking* and kick it to the curb at the first $18,5/$19,5 .. I buy every CLEAN RL I can find and "if" this one is a nice one, it won't last long ......
...... Thanks Jolie, but we will be fine .. this is my 4th one ~ hey, no guts - no Glory.! .. we are just going to cruise up to my buddies place in Bama' and hang out for the Labor Day Holiday ..............
Oh and like I have TIME to visit car lots, although I did swing by the Nissan dealer to check on parts for my Titan today.
Saw the 04 Explorer XLS Sport (4-dr) that I traded in sitting there, so I wandered over to see the price.........$27,990, was good for a laugh. I only paid $25k for it new.
On another note, I'm driving 1k miles/week back and forth to work. Working 11 pm to 7:30 am.
Have a safe trip. If Frances hits the right spot they are predicting it could hit Atlanta and still be a Category 1. No big deal for you Florida pros but has anyone ever seen traffic in Atlanta even with light drizzle? Not a purdy sight.
I was hoping I could get one last one in real quick.
1999 Lexus ES300 125,000 miles White exterior/tan leather
Memory seats, leather, roof, climate, CD/cassette In terrific shape for the mileage. One small scratch on the front bumper that you can barely catch with your fingernail and a small dime-sized ding on the rear passenger quarter panel.
Interior looks hovered in. Needs just a good vacuum and wipe and it will be ready to go.
Everything works. Purs like a kitten at start-up. Only thing I saw it was in need of is a set of tires.
What's a good private party price here in Atlanta?

Terry, thanks for the response - yes, I did a lousy job with the description.
It is black exterior and interior. Well cared for with paint work and interior in excellent condition, runs great, never been in an accident though it does have the usual teeny dings from other parked cars - but really nothing of consequence. One owner car - been serviced at the dealer from the time of purchase and still has about three months left of the manufacturer's warranty. Re other options, as you know the Acura RL for 2000 came with only one available option - the navigation system and this one has that feature. New Michelin tires - 5K miles ago - and new battery - 3K miles ago. Everything is in working order - no surprise since it is still under warranty.
It is located in Northern VA.
CarMax has offered my $17K for the car - the offer is good until tomorrow. I have an ad that started running today in the Washington Post asking $20,500. I am not sure how much, if any, CarMax would reduce the original offer if I wait a couple of weeks to see if I can sell it privately.
Sorry about the less than detailed description the first go around.
The schools had never closed for bad weather until 2 winters ago and then again last winter. Both times it was for an ice storm, the roads were pretty much not passable, there was an inch of ice on everything. Couldn't get up a hill if you didn't have snow tires and 4WD.
Other than that it can snow 10' and there will still be school, it can be -60 and school with still be open. Just don't give us ice, we can't handle that.
It's crazy. Even if there is a slight hint that an inch of snow might think about falling everyone gets freaked out. I think it's a once a year agreement between the news stations and the grocery stores. Maybe the grocery stores split some of the profits.
anon - even here in Boston people freak out over snow. Back in 1978 (I was in middle school), we had the infamous Blizzard. About 36" of snow fell on top of 27" we had 2 weeks earlier. The city was essentially shut down for 10 days.
Some things change and some don't. About 2 years ago we had a storm that dumped about 40". I was only 3 hours late for work. Snow removal is much improved now but everyone still bought a month's worth of bread, milk, bottled water, and amber adult beverages!!
I bet the birth rate soared about 9 months after that storm in 1978. We had a big snow storm here back in March 1992. There were lots of December babies that year.
They don't freak out people in Boston anything like Southerners, trust me!
I was working at a hospital in southern Virginia and everyone wanted to go home early as there were FLURRIES falling. The people were in a state of near panic although I promised them a ride home if there was any snow.
Two inches and the roads were considered impassable.
I'm not familiar with this forum, but from what I can see it kind of looks like person(s) offering opinions on real world trade in values might be having problems with weather! Hope all is well. Am just reposting in order to not be overlooked in case there's someone available to help. Is there just one person, someone named Terry? How long does it normally take to get a response? Here's the info again: My trade in is a high (125K miles) 2000 Town & Country Limited with all the usual T & C Ltd. extras, plus a DC extra called "premium paint"--sort of ivory color with a nice iridescence--I think they called it "pearlized." I also bought the full set of Chrysler color matched rubber floor mats for front and second row and the deep color-matched plastic tray liner for cargo area. No after market changes. No wrecks but several small parking lot dings and one "thigh" shaped dent in door where a friend slammed his thigh pretty hard into the sliding door in order to close it. You have to look hard to see it, but from an angle you can see a shallow foot wide dent. Didn't try to repair it because it was so shallow. Driven mostly without kids in it--there are NO stains or signs of wear on the carpet or leather upholstery, but there is a 1 mm (size of a match head) scratch on the dash and the driver's seat has a very slightly "broken in" look compared to the other seats. I'd appreciate an idea of what a trade in allowance might be in a suburban Honda or Toyota dealership in Texas. Will be buying Ody or Sienna soon. Thanks for your help.
There are several car professionals in here, and Terry probably has the most experience with vehicle values. He usually answers quickly - within a day - but he is probably getting out of FL as we speak. It might be a couple days - hang in there.
We need to chip in and get Terry a laptop with a wireless card. That way he could hit a hot spot or an unprotected network and keep earning his keep helping us out no matter where he is.
I kind of figured it was something like that, but wasn't quite sure what was going on. Thanks for responding so quickly ! I hope he'll get out okay--he sounds like a very valuable person around here !
Thanks for the feedback on pricing our apparently worthless BMW. It seems that Edmunds' "appraisal" trade-in values should be taken with a grain of salt? According to this site (Edmunds' used car appraisal section) our car's trade-in value is $12,500. Terry says we'd only get $6K or $7K on a typical trade. Why the big difference?
Kelly Blue Book says trade-in value is $8,250 and nadaguides says $9,675. I thought Edmunds was supposed to be a neutral, consumer-friendly source of info and that kbb is owned by dealers and thus can't be trusted by consumers trying to get a good deal for themselves. In general, which source is the best indicator of the price we should be aiming for?
Yeah, good eye--good eye!! ... and I'll be the main one hounding ya'll to get an answer on this minivan. It's my assignment to replace the minivan and use Edmunds although DH is the one with the wireless laptop--I have to post from work or home computer. Tried to get my middle schooler to help with this as part of earning a scout badge--"not interested mom." Hope to hear from Terry when he (she?) is available. THANKS !!!
Also...almost without fail. the guides seriously underestimate the deduction for high miles.. It is probably where you will find the biggest discrepancies...
star - driftracer had a good post a while back about cars above 100K. Bottom line was that dealers don't want them because used car buyers generally want low-milers. So once your miles get into the 6 digit area the possible trade-in value goes south real fast. Add that to the (usual) high costs to maintain older german cars and that where you're getting hit. And as it's been said above, the "books" do a very poor job of estimating the market effect of high miles.
Generally speaking, if Terry's not available here to give you a quote because he's fleeing 130MPH winds, I'd start by looking at all 3 - KBB, Edmunds, and NADA. Throw out the one that's not like the other. Then, assuming your car is not some unique animal like a BMW M3, subtract dollars for anything over 10,000 miles per year. Sounds harsh but from reading here that's the way the auction goers think (so much for an average of 12-15,000 per year). And if you're above 100K, subtract even more. Stinks, but then not too many people keep their cars much past 100K anymore, and you're asking a buyer to start at 136K.
Also...almost without fail. the guides seriously underestimate the deduction for high miles.. It is probably where you will find the biggest discrepancies...
And also, the 2 brands which suffer the most for high mileage are Mercedes and BMW. A 97 LS400 with similar miles would be worth more than the 740, though it cost about 25% less to begin with.
did you read that post (#20851) or are you just upset at the opinions you're getting?
Sorry, but that's the way it is - when you break 100k, especially on a vehicle with a known propensity for breaking and being astronomically expensive to repair, the "books" are way off from real, human, trained/experienced appraiser opinions.
These books do the same math on a mileage deduction or addition at 20k as they do at 150k - no emotion, no logic, just a math calculation - they get VERY wrong over 80k or so.
I bought an $11k Focus to mile up. Would rather have that Focus at 2 years old and 120k miles then even THINK about the depreciation on my Titan at 2 years old and 120k (YEOWCH).
It seems folks want to drive the miles, not do the maintenance, whatever the type of justified or unjustified abuse there is, then they don't want to pay up...
2000 Ford Explorer XLT, 4 door, 4 x 4, sport group, cassette, cd, oversized offroad tires, 5 speed auto O/D trans, step bar --good physical condition, excellent running condition. 58,000 miles
Maybe it's a blueish, blackish, redish, grayish, white Explorer with high low miles and a V6-8ish engine and those new cloth leather seats. I'm sure it's probably located in a driveway too.
I haven't checked in here for 1,000 posts, and if I had thought about Terry running from Frances, I would have eased up on my Real World referrals (hey again Texasmom). Be safe tripping to Bama and back Terry!
And happy birthday Akangl. See the new Quests at your Nissan lot drive-by? Our '99 is cruising along at 98k; wonder where yours is?
btw, I've filled up my '97 Outback 5 times since the ski hill closed on March 26 (~1500 miles). At this rate maybe it'll break 50,000 miles by February.
My Quest was bought by a young military family so who knows where it ended up. I miss that van, was a nice cruiser. Love my Titan though. I've seen the new Quest *gag*, not my cup of tea. If I was going for a minivan it would be a Sienna or an Ody.
My little Focus will turn 6k miles this week, poor little thing hardly gets to rest.
Hey all, I think we missed the worst of Frances...thank g-d! You're right though, people went nuts down here. Home Depot, Walmart and the grocery stores were mobbed, even at midnight when we took a ride. And forget the gas stations. Luckily, we filled up both cars on tuesday. A shame how people get crazy and nasty before these kind of threats! To everyone else in Florida...good luck and be safe!
V6 4.0L SOHC engine--Toreador Red Clearcoat Met- Med Graphite Cloth Sport--located in Massachusetts-- luxury Aluminum wheels /16 X 7--dual front airbags, power windows, power mirrors, rear air/audio controls, privacy glass, power driver seat, luggage rack, remote entry, power door locks, cruise control--never been off-roading--good physical condition--no dings, some stains on floor carpets that I can probably remove myself before trade.
My maid comes to me asking for help in buying a car. I'm thinking maybe an accord or camry cause she says she wants something nice. Then she shows me the buyer;s order she got from a chevy dealer for a used car on their lot. I started to laugh when I saw it was for an '03 E500. Maybe I've been a little too generous with her salary - good grief! Anyway, could you peg a number for me on this car?

Not as ugly as when Atlanta gets it's 1/2" "snow storm" every 10 years and there isn't a loaf of bread to be found from Conyers to Augusta!!

True - it just the ridiculous need for everyone to go out and horde milk and bread. It's snow - not armageddon.

realistic figures can only come from potential buyers. terry does a great job, and is usually no more than $100-$200 away from a deal.
other than that, take the car to 3 dealers and ask for a check to buy the car straight out. you will get the most accurate cash values that way.
