My trade in is a very high (125K miles) 2000 Town & Country Limited with the only option DC offered at the time--a "premium paint"--sort of ivory color with a nice iridescence--I think they called it "pearlized." Got the full set of Chrysler color matched rubber floor mats for front and second row and the deep color-matched plastic tray liner for cargo area.
No after market changes. No wrecks but several small parking lot dings and one "fanny" shaped dent in door where a friend slammed his behind into the sliding door in order to close it. You have to look hard to see it, but from an angle you can see a foot wide dent. Didn't try to repair it.
Both the front and rear plastic bumpers have several scratches low near the bottoms where we pulled up too closely to various curbs.
Car looks good from ten feet away but up close you can see bug stains on the "nose."
The trip computer right now says that it's getting about 19 mpg and it runs well. The current set of tires has about 10K on them.
Driven mostly without kids in it--there are NO stains or signs of wear on the carpet or leather upholstery, but there is a 1 mm scratch on the dash and the driver's seat has a very slightly "broken in" look compared to the other seats.
I'd appreciate an idea of what a trade in allowance might be in a suburban dealership in Texas. Thanks for your help.
Unlike all the others I saw listed here, mine has had some body work: in 2002 I was sandwiched and the front and rear were repaired. In 2003 the front and rear doors were "keyed" and repainted, and this past march I was rear ended again; the rear repaired, then a week after that my neighbor backed into the rear AGAIN...repaired. Not because it's been so battered (I wasn't injured despite being pregnant during both impacts; I feel the car protected me well) but because now with 2 kids in car seats I need more space and want a mini-van.
Because of the repaint on the front hood, it now has lots of little rock pocks, as do the lower plastic panels on the front doors, there's a small ding on the driver door.
New Brakes (last month) and new tires within the last 6 months. Oil changed every 3k-5k (have records).
Silver exterior, cloth seats (no stains despite the kids), 6 cd changer, heated seats & mirrors, moonroof, side airbags, auto dim mirror, and upgraded front grill. Real close to 59,000 miles. I live in Long Beach...driving to San Francisco this weekend. Will I do better in So. Cal or No. Cal? Looking to trade for a 97ish Dodge Grand Caravan.

These are pretty nice drivers .. this one has 42k, tiny miles for the year, we have that nav thing and thats pretty much what you have told me .... ugh, bad description - color - location ..? .. but since I'm still up .......
If this dude is Clean, no paintwork, serviced from day one, no Wal-mart hits, no Popeyes chicken under the seats, no I drove over my aunts fence at the family reunion, it's been waxed, loved and cared for ... if so, then trade side in and around the low/mid $16's, might maybe see a dealer get close to the $17 figure (if it needs stuff, start deducting) .....
Great vehicle down Retail Rd, super detail, incredible 5/6 liner ad in the biggest paper in the area, $19,900 *asking* and kick it to the curb at the first $18,5/$19,5 .. I buy every CLEAN RL I can find and "if" this one is a nice one, it won't last long ......

Saw the 04 Explorer XLS Sport (4-dr) that I traded in sitting there, so I wandered over to see the price.........$27,990, was good for a laugh. I only paid $25k for it new.
On another note, I'm driving 1k miles/week back and forth to work. Working 11 pm to 7:30 am.

In terrific shape for the mileage. One small scratch on the front bumper that you can barely catch with your fingernail and a small dime-sized ding on the rear passenger quarter panel.
Interior looks hovered in. Needs just a good vacuum and wipe and it will be ready to go.
Everything works. Purs like a kitten at start-up. Only thing I saw it was in need of is a set of tires.

Terry, thanks for the response - yes, I did a lousy job with the description.
It is black exterior and interior. Well cared for with paint work and interior in excellent condition, runs great, never been in an accident though it does have the usual teeny dings from other parked cars - but really nothing of consequence. One owner car - been serviced at the dealer from the time of purchase and still has about three months left of the manufacturer's warranty. Re other options, as you know the Acura RL for 2000 came with only one available option - the navigation system and this one has that feature. New Michelin tires - 5K miles ago - and new battery - 3K miles ago. Everything is in working order - no surprise since it is still under warranty.
It is located in Northern VA.
CarMax has offered my $17K for the car - the offer is good until tomorrow. I have an ad that started running today in the Washington Post asking $20,500. I am not sure how much, if any, CarMax would reduce the original offer if I wait a couple of weeks to see if I can sell it privately.

Not as ugly as when Atlanta gets it's 1/2" "snow storm" every 10 years and there isn't a loaf of bread to be found from Conyers to Augusta!!
Other than that it can snow 10' and there will still be school, it can be -60 and school with still be open. Just don't give us ice, we can't handle that.
Some things change and some don't. About 2 years ago we had a storm that dumped about 40". I was only 3 hours late for work. Snow removal is much improved now but everyone still bought a month's worth of bread, milk, bottled water, and amber adult beverages!!
My car stayed at the hospital for 4 days before they dug it out and I could pick it up.
I was working at a hospital in southern Virginia and everyone wanted to go home early as there were FLURRIES falling. The people were in a state of near panic although I promised them a ride home if there was any snow.
Two inches and the roads were considered impassable.
True - it just the ridiculous need for everyone to go out and horde milk and bread. It's snow - not armageddon.

Kelly Blue Book says trade-in value is $8,250 and nadaguides says $9,675. I thought Edmunds was supposed to be a neutral, consumer-friendly source of info and that kbb is owned by dealers and thus can't be trusted by consumers trying to get a good deal for themselves. In general, which source is the best indicator of the price we should be aiming for?
realistic figures can only come from potential buyers. terry does a great job, and is usually no more than $100-$200 away from a deal.
other than that, take the car to 3 dealers and ask for a check to buy the car straight out. you will get the most accurate cash values that way.

Generally speaking, if Terry's not available here to give you a quote because he's fleeing 130MPH winds, I'd start by looking at all 3 - KBB, Edmunds, and NADA. Throw out the one that's not like the other. Then, assuming your car is not some unique animal like a BMW M3, subtract dollars for anything over 10,000 miles per year. Sounds harsh but from reading here that's the way the auction goers think (so much for an average of 12-15,000 per year). And if you're above 100K, subtract even more. Stinks, but then not too many people keep their cars much past 100K anymore, and you're asking a buyer to start at 136K.
And also, the 2 brands which suffer the most for high mileage are Mercedes and BMW.
A 97 LS400 with similar miles would be worth more than the 740, though it cost about 25% less to begin with.
Sorry, but that's the way it is - when you break 100k, especially on a vehicle with a known propensity for breaking and being astronomically expensive to repair, the "books" are way off from real, human, trained/experienced appraiser opinions.
These books do the same math on a mileage deduction or addition at 20k as they do at 150k - no emotion, no logic, just a math calculation - they get VERY wrong over 80k or so.
I'd be too, if I were him.

btw, I've filled up my '97 Outback 5 times since the ski hill closed on March 26 (~1500 miles). At this rate maybe it'll break 50,000 miles by February.

My Quest was bought by a young military family so who knows where it ended up. I miss that van, was a nice cruiser. Love my Titan though. I've seen the new Quest *gag*, not my cup of tea. If I was going for a minivan it would be a Sienna or an Ody.
My little Focus will turn 6k miles this week, poor little thing hardly gets to rest.
