Local dealer had only 2 new '04 Honda Odysseys left. Bit the bullet and decide to trade in my '99 Tahoe before Terry or anyone else could get to my request.

Got the new Ody for several hundred under invoice and Fin. Mang. beat my Capital One rate by a full point...3.39%/60 and gave me "cost" for the 7/100K/0 ext. warr. Only additional fee charged was the $15 processing or whatever fee they charge for the paper work.

As for the trade value for my Tahoe...got $8800 for it. A few hundred less than I thought I would get from the numbers off Edmunds, KBB, NADA.

Anyway, thought it was far deal.

I would appreciate an estimated trade-in value on my 2003 Cavalier

    Location: Boston, MA
    Mileage: 25,400 or so
    Color: Arrival Blue
Style: Base w/popular pakage (tilt, sunroof spoiler and the like)
    Maintenance: All current

    Tires: All tires are good

Body condition: other than one minor ding on the passenger side front fender, it's clean

Interior: needs a little cleaning, but other than that it's also clean. no rips, tears, or stains.

Dealer offered me $4500 for it. This is much lower than the NADA/Edmunds values.

I would appreciate an estimated trade-in value on my 2002 Toyota Camry:

    Location: Tulsa, OK
    Year/Make/Model: 2002 Toyota Camry
Body Style: 4 dr. Sedan, LE
Engine: 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder, Automatic
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 91,000 miles
    Color: Exterior: Black Interior: Gray
Major Options: Alloy wheels, Front & Side Air Bags, ABS, Keyless Entry System, Power Driver's Seat
    Condition:
Body - sustained a broken left brake/turn light housing and dimpled back bumper guard in a backing accident. 2 local shop estimates around $600 to $700 to repair. Also a couple of superficial scraches on the back bumper guard from taking out suitcases.
    Interior - clean
    Tires - new
    Brakes - good
    Maintenance - current

If it was really $4,500 actual cash value, take it and run. Base 5 speed with popular options, plus a ding on the fender, maybe high $3,000 actual cash value. Automatic a couple of hundred more. It is a Cavalier that will retail out somewhere in the $7,500 + or - range if 4 door automatic and fully loaded, start deducting for 2 door, 5 speed, fewer than loaded options, and the ding.

If you want a real world number, post ALL the information as indicated in RED above the posting area.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,281
I assume the body shop estimates both include replacing/refinishing the entire bumper. That would fix both the accident damage and the scratches. If the rest of the body is clean, it would probably be worth your while to get it repaired before you try to trade or sell it.

I am thinking about buying this from my boss in Birmingham, AL:

    1994 Lexus GS300
    118,000 miles

green exterior with tan leather interior

no nakamichi, but all the other expected options

records of regular maintenance, but due for another timing belt and the tires are almost gone

an assortment of minor exterior blemishes, but nothing major and no significant paintwork
interior is good, but the console is starting to look worn

In general it looks like a decent used car, but nothing special

    Thanks

......... Sounds like a $4,5ish vehicle on the trade side ... down Retail Rd.? $5,9ish ..... whats he asking.?

    Terry:
    97 Pontiac Bonneville SLE
    Leather, Moonroof, Supercharged Engine
A/C not working anymore (needs compressor)
168,000 miles still runs very well, body good
             ===============================

                  SE/SLE/SSEi, no matter .. it's a 170k machine and no breeze ... trade side, $500/$1,000 .. I don't think I would bother with Retail Rd ............................ ;)

The dealer only offered $12,500 for the 04 Mitsubishi, what would you think would be a fair (quick) price for it if they went on a private sale?
I know you like your updates, the ad will go in the paper this weekend for the 01 Chevy Prizm LSI for $8,900 and we will see what happens.
    Many thanks!
    M.

                 ============================

$12,500 ...? sounds like the dealer missed this one, big time .... spend a few bucks, make it look new, superb Ad, $15,900 *asking* and away it goes for $14,9/$15,5 if you want it to go - "quick" ........... :)

Sorry about that. Here's more info:

    Location: Boston, MA
    Body Style: 2 door coupe
    Tranny: Auto
    Engine: 2.2L 4 cyl
Options: Power roof, tilt, AM/FM CD, rear spoiler, mud guards, map lights, auto trunk release, vanity mirrors
Color: Arrival blue w/charcoal cloth interior
Paint: Shiny looks new (except for the small ding)
    Mileage: 25.4k
    Maintenance: Current
Tires: Still a good amount of tread left. I would say close to 50%, if not more.
    Brakes: Good

Edmunds trade was $7800 or so, as was the NADA. I guess I just don't understand why the figures are so different if you're including all of the same information and your zip code. I've seen trade-in figures from $4500 all the way up to $7900.

I was kind of hoping for more than $4500 where it's a 2003 an all. I was looking for closer to $6000. I knew going in that I would take a hit because I'm going in belly-up, but I didn't think it would be that big of a hit. Least I'll know better the next time around.

Regarding the ding-will probably call Dent Wizard to come an pull. The paint isn't popped and it's not creased, so it should come right out w/no problems. Would it be worth spending the $100 or so??

You are da man !!! I'll let you know how I make out. I am not planning to spend more than $40K for the LX, so maybe I can get a low miler 2001 or simply wait a couple more months for the '05s to stay around and see if I can get an '02 low miler off lease for <$40K. At least that's my plan. I'll most probably sell my SEQ myself to get maximum return for my money.

I want to thank you for all your good work here. I hope that the help you provide to others (sight unseen) comes back in multiple folds to you and your significant other.

An update for ya, Terry! You don't have to come look for me! Last week you wrote:

    ========
Anyway .............. we have a 91 Jetta GLI with 130k, 4dr, handshaker, slider, power pack, power pack, weak breeze, you say it's been well "preserved" and the service is right .. trade side, in and around the $500/$1,000 zipcode ... the Saab has lower miles, auto and we have that CPO thing going on .. IF ~ it's nice, no paintwork, clean Carsmack, just a nice wagon .. then the dealer probably has the super tall $12's, low low low $13's in it - but lets add the CPO, then it probably hits the table at in and around the $14ish figure ..... you should be able to trade for your vehicle and the super tall $15's, low low low $16's *difference* ~ so your on the money ........ $19,950.? - great price if your Yasser Arafat ...
Let me know - Don't make me ride over there to find out what happens .............. ;)
    =======

The Jetta got good reviews, offer $1100 (vs. strong $1300-1400 from some lots). But considering I could probably get $2K+ for it, I couldn't leave a grand on the table and I'll sell it myself, no prob.

The Saab checked out at the mechanic, a few minor dings but the big downer was it needed four new shoes and had a small bend in one rim.

But holy cow! Not only were the dealer and I not close, we weren't in the same zip code! Supposedly that $19.6 did not include the CPO, so add $1200... yeah, right. I started a bit low, $16 flat, no trade, bumped it to $16.5 and might have been willing to head towards $17. they only knocked off $2K more, "final offer" was $17990 *plus* $1200 for CPO = $19190.

Not on your life, esp. needing $400 of new rubber off the bat. Am I just being hard headed, or are they just willing to wait for someone who hasn't checked in with you first? :-)

OTOH, my mom once had a 3K spread on a used Celica she wanted, and walked. A week later they called her up and gave her her price. Perhaps there's still hope.

Just to let you know, its a done deal on the Titan. My other one is paid off. So, to recap we paid $35,500 (cap cost on the lease) for the white LE (msrp 36,560) and they paid off $35k on the sedona SE. Total cost out of our pocket was $200.

    Hi Terry,
How much should I expect for trade-in value on a Honda Civic '98, LX, 4dr, pwr windows, auto, 72K miles, fresh tires (5K miles old). Silver exterior w/no noticeable scratches, but finish shows its age (not too shiny). Top mechanical condition. Maintenance done by dealer, records kept. Back bumper was repainted for damage done while parked. Located in Los Angeles.
    Thanks a lot,
    -Julio.

I posted my Liberty a few weeks back and am looking at trading it in on a Volvo S40. I have been watching the dealer lots and noticed that there is two about 30 & 40 miles east of me (not alot of Volvo dealers in Northern Ohio) that have greater than five 2004.5 models on the lot along with the new 2005 cars. For those that don't know the model, the 2004.5 is the redesigned S40 so it looks just like the 2005. Would a dealer be willing to discount the price of the 2004.5 model since they are starting to get more of the 2005 models or are they looking at them with no difference than a 2005? 2004.5 is still a 2004 right so it is a yr old model?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Your assumption is correct. Should I opt not to repair it, however, what would you estimate I could expect to receive as a trade-in value? Thank you very much.

Just something for you to think about. Many Chevy dealers have a bunch of 2003 4 door Cavaliers with 25K-30K Automatic,a/c, manual windows and locks, just off rental. Most are being advertised with an ASKING price of $7,900. Dealer has maybe low $5,000's (after detail and fix up) depending on specific options, color, etc in those.

Given that yours is a 2 door, no a/c?, what do you think it really will be worth at auction?

Terry can chime in with the specific value for your area, but I would bet the dealer was not too far off.

    Terry-

Ok....2000 Audi A8, regular wheel base, quattro. NJ. Black on black.

Have extended warranty to 100k, but I don't think that matters in the least on a trade-in.

81k miles. I know, just lost TONS of $ right there.

Pretty much the whole shebang of options, as is the case with this car- NAV, heated seats, park assist, 17" alloy, ski sack.

Two sets of tires, both about halfway through life- one a set of Nokian SUV winters. Not sure, again, if this matters to a dealer.

Condition, I would say, is pretty good. A few minor dings and scratches on the exterior (can a 4 year old car be spotless?)but nothing noticeable, interior good with exception of a small crack in the rear passenger door panel (the magazine-type holder attached to the door) and the number 3 seat memory button is missing on the driver side door.

Title is clean, no accidents or repairs outside of typical maintenance and age-related replacements (brakes, tires, timing belt, etc.). Recent 75k service, at a shade under 1k might not have been worth it, but Audi service was great and covered some things under extended warranty that I really should have paid for.

Brakes about 7k old. Maintenance ALL Audi, all one dealership, all in-hand.

Well? I know the 22k Edmunds has as my TMV is a joke...but by how much?

    Thanks!

    Walt,
That's just not nice. Baiting me with stuff 5 h from here... and in the right direction. THat's a "southern car" by my definition.

" first run was this past Sunday."
That's the spirit. Keep a continuous eye on the ads and you get a good idea of what moves, who's anxious, who's full of it etc.

BTW, anyone up for the deal-of-the-month in the form of a 1999 Odyssey LX with 149k miles for (drum roll) $13,500?

Once a week or so, I call one of these yahoos just for the heck of it... this one deserves to have their chain yanked....

    ....... A8's - nice vehicles ......

This one is the shorty, we have (gulp) 81k but we have a 100k back-up, it's the right color for the area, we have the whole "shebang" (I love that word) Nav, bun warmers, ski rack(?) why don't you keep them in your boat? ...

IF ~ we don't have any paint work, no KFC, no K-mart collisions and no darn Swirlomatic car washes, just a nice vehicle with 81k and a little war torn .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $13's, low/mid $14's, "might" maybe "could" find a dealer a that would drop the tall tall $14's in it, maybe ......... $22 .?!? .. does it really say that.? .. maybe thats with the dollar conversion between Guatemala and the States .................. :))

I wanna buy 2000 MUSTANG STD Coupe which is $ 6995 and has 62,446 mileage. However, this car is RENTAL car. Is this deal reasonable? If you, experts for Mustang, were me, are you still interesting in this deal or is this price so much exaggerated? Please tell me the answer for this complicated question?
  • khaskinskhaskins Member Posts: 4
Thanks for the response. I checked the dealer ads locally and found that the four door models and coupes were still retailing (asking price) between 9k and 11k, believe it or not.

Anyway, I was able to get close to the price I wanted, $5600, for trade. I took a soaking, but I knew I would going in. You will any time you trade something you've financed.

BTW-all Cavaliers come with A/C now. I think most makes and models have A/C as a standard feature nowadays.

I guess I'm just ignorant when it comes to the reasoning behing 'wholesaling' something that's only 2 years old. Oh well!

    Thanks

The new redesigned one. Looking for a fair purchase price from the dealer. Car was a demo so I guess I look at as a used car.

    2004.5 Volvo S40
    2.4i 5 cyclinder
    FWD
    Approx. 4,700 miles
    White exterior
    Tan interior (leather)
Has the premium package and auto tranny (no heated seats or fancy lights or light washers)

Dealer asking approx. 24,500 for it. Which is basically what the invoice was on it. I figured if they were willing to deal I would take it off their hands otherwise I would sit and wait until the 2005 loose their luster.

    Thanks

Thanks Terry. Ski rack is actually "ski sack", which I believe is the ability to fold down the back seats to create a long, thin length of storage- hence, the term. Came as part of an option (maybe premium or cold, but can't remember and don't have the sticker anymore), just figured I'd throw it in the description to be complete.

Yeah, it does say 22k on here, and KBB is even a little higher. Dabbled a little privately, but getting people to pay 15k or more for a German car with over 80k miles is not easy. Plus, by the time I cover taxes on a private sale, the difference would be a little less if I were to trade it in.

I'm ALL over the map on the next vehicle- G35x, A4/S4, A6, RL, 330xi....if I were to wait a few months I assume the M35 and possibly the AWD GS would enter my shopping list. Great time to be after entry to mid-level luxury vehicles, and thanks for letting me know what to expect/accept for the outgoing A8. She has served me well!

    Hi Terry -

I'll keep posting/asking if you keep answering! Thanks for your help.

This one is a 2004 Sienna XLE Limited AWD.
Desert Sand Mica Exterior (Gold)/Tan Interior.
    Looks nice inside and out.
It is a Limited, so it has it all the options, plus the DVD and NAVI (HO package).
    Oh yeah, and AWD.
Now the bad news - 31k clicks on the odometer.
Located in South, FL. Big need for AWD here!

They will 6 year, 100k Toyota bumper-bumper certify for $998.

What do you think is a fair price for this one? Miles are a killer.

Might pull the trigger soon - so looking for some help as soon as you can!

    Thanks - Damon

    Slight update:

Van is Toyota Certified already, the additional $998 is for SE Toyota Bumper-to-Bumper $50 deductible warranty.

Thoughts on fair retail price for this bad-boy?

Brand new 2005 with all this stuff has an MSRP of $42k, and can buy for $40k from what I can tell.

On that 1994 GS300, I asked my boss about a price and he said he would see what Edmunds and KBB estimate for it.

Private party, that would be around $8,500. Ouch.

How are the BMW X3s doing at the auction(s)??? Namely 2.5L stick shift...??? I do know couple guys that could buy one for me at one of the local auctions (Chicago area) for a nominal fee :). Before I call them, though, I would like to get an idea...

..... Fine, no problem .. have Edmunds or KBB give him a check for $8,500 - ooop's, whatta ya mean they won't do that.?!? ...l.o.l...

Wonderful vehicles, but it's 12 years old .. $5,900 is fair if it needs stuff and $6,500 would just about kill it.

    Terry -

    Thanks much for the response.

Asking price with the Toyota Certification (6 year, 100k) is $33.3k, he will 'take' $33k.

I offered $31k with the additional bumper-to-bumper warranty. I was respectfully told no thanks.

I agree with your thoughts on the pricing, but the market seems crazy on these used guys.

I am seeing 2004 XLE (not limited, not AWD) with leather, power everything, sunroof, JBL asking anywhere from $28.9-$33k. And most seem to be gone everytime I call. So I guess they are getting somewhat near asking price.

I guess I will pass on this car - no need to walk into $5k of negative equity right off the bat - may as well do that with new! Any thoughts on how to get my hands on a nice example for the price you describe within the next 6 weeks???

But here are couple of ebay links to ponder:

Am I looking at that funny, or did the white one have running boards? In my experience, minivans don't ride high enough to need them...

Nope - you saw correctly - running boards are an option on these - about $300 or so from the dealer.

Also, got a little more info on the Van I am looking at. Van was just traded in on a brand new identical 2005. Was never smoked in. "Looks perfect - can't tell this one from the brand new one". New run-flats were just put on as part of the certification process ($800 or so I would suspect). Also, 30k service was just performed at dealer, as was all other services. Any of this make it a $33k vehicle???

Nope... On a used vehicle you assume tires that are no more than half worn, if you have to replace them to meet that criteria, it's not the next buyer's fault, nor should he pay for it.

I looked up the tires on Tire Rack. The high-performance ones have a longer wear rating and are $194; the plain all-seasons theoretically wear out sooner and are $212. That's the Tire Rack price, if you bought them locally you'd probably be looking at $250+. By the time you add shipping, mounting, and balancing, you're looking at about a grand for new shoes every 30k or so. Not bad if you're driving an Acura NSX, but seems a little high for a $40k luxo vehicle.

My roommate has the following, likely trading on a Corolla:

2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport (mid-line model)
    4.0 6-cylinder, 5-speed manual
    black exterior, gray cloth interior
    graphite alloy wheels
    45k miles
    hard and soft tops
tilt wheel, rear defrost and wiper
    NO a/c
factory AM/FM cassette w/speakers in roll bar, NO CD
in Chicago 60657 (north side, near the rich DePaul kids)

Condition generally good, paint very nice, no major scratches or dings. Left corner (probably plastic part only) of rear bumper pushed in, but no compromise to structure or mounts of bumper. Interior good except one cig burn in driver's seat, needs general detailing but will be done before trade. Soft top missing one plastic window panel, hard top now installed and in good shape, wiper and rear defrost functional. Tires are original but surprisingly good for 45k (would it pay to spend the $600 to have them replaced anyway?). New brake pads all around, rotors in front. He owes somewhere around $7-7500, I'm thinking trade should well exceed that. What do you think on trade, or should he sell outright? Prices on these rigs are really all over the place. As always, thanks!!

Terry - can you give me a trade in value for my 2004 Chevy Tahoe LS? 2WD, 4.8 L, cloth interior, white exterior, third seat is the only option BUT only 3,000 miles and absolutely no defects. Located in Tucson, AZ. Thanks.

Repost--Terry? Or anyone with experience on trying to trade in a car with body damage vs. fixing it first?
