    ...... Didn't I just answer this thing.?

01 Disco 7, BRG, new rubber, 70k ... hmm, nope that one had less miles in a yankee city(?) and a squeaky wife ...

In Hotlanta for this one ... ya know the drill by now, no French Fry invasions, (oop's, don't want use that anymore since Jacques Chirac has been caught stealing $money$) no American Fry invasions, no uh oh it's Maaco, no I ran over my Aunts garage at Thanksgiving, no meteorite hits, no Soccer Mom interiors and the service is from yesterday - basically it looks/drives and feels like an 03 with 20k ...

If so, then trade side, in and around the super ultra high $10's, low/mid $11's, "maybe" could even see the low low low low $12's, but I have a stupid feeling the miles and the color is going to stop a big money dancer, to Disco with your vehicle .. I bet $11,5 will just about send this off to the happy hunting ground ...................... :)

    Terry,
Thanks so much! So the warranty and the jump seats don't do much?

Oh well, lesson learned - expensive but learned.

    Hi Terry:
Not to bother your beauty sleep, but can you give me some numbers on the stuff posted here ?
       .. OAC .. Dec 1, 2004 5:11pm
    Muchos gracias....

            ==============================

Bud .. if I had to sleep to get some beauty, I would be sleeping 20hrs a day .......

(none of these showed on my auction reports) ... Both of these dudes are on the looow side, lets get it out of here, Tumbleweed, how ya doing, bye bye pricing level ... the white pearl has the highest miles, and the dealer might "could" have paid the $34ish range for it, plus a this and a that, so I don't think he's trying to give anyone the guillotine, maybe $35,9ish(?) .... the black one, much less in the miles department, he probably paid the the $36ish range for it, plus the Partridge in a Pear tree, doesn't seem he's trying pay for his Christmas off any of these dudes ..... let me know how it goes.

(disclaimer) thats if they have a great history, clean Carsmack, no repaints, deep sneakers, serviced, yatti yatti yatti ................. ;)

**Thanks so much! So the warranty and the jump seats don't do much?** ...

                 Pull the 3rd seat out and your kicking another $1,000+ off, at least ....... it's the miles that's crushing you, and the color don't help ~ Big miles on *any* Euro import has a tendency to come back and slap ya right upside your head, no matter what the "books" say ...... if you haven't used the warranty, then they will refund a percentage back -- great help down Retail Road though .............. ;^}

    >>Any idea what an avg $$ is lost to get out of these things?

Answer: "A lot". BTW, where are you advertising it, & for how much? It's got new Michelins, & a warranty; should help selling it privately (maybe?). There are some LR websites where you can put ads in for free, & good pics help a lot.

    Hi Terry:

Thanks. I am going over to the dealership Saturday to check BOTH of these trucks, assuming they are still there and at the same prices, and if everything goes well, i.e. (disclaimer) thats if they have a great history, clean Carsmack, no repaints, deep sneakers, serviced, yatti yatti yatti ................. ;) then I may be bringing one home with me. Preferably the WHITE one... just loves my cars in white.

I'll let you know how it goes.

**we are trying to sell private party but aren't getting any calls.**

Sorry, had a blonde moment and I missed the "sell private party" thing -- Duh.!

If I was you (and I ain't) then a glorious detail, a superb 5/6 liner Ad in the biggest paper in the area to run for "at least" 10/14 days ... $13,900 *asking* and cut it from the herd for the first $12,9/$13,5 and yes, the warranty helps down Retail Rd .... what were you asking.?

Items being replaced with genuine Toyota parts:
Right headlight, radiator, a/c unit, and any other damage they discover while in there. The bumper and hood are also being replaced.
This was bad timing as this was the weekend we should be showing the car to sellers. But instead some guy decided to speed on a wet road going around a bed, lose control and hit me head on. Nice :(
Any thoughts what we could get on it as a trade in? We're assuming no one would buy it from us directly since it was involved in an accident. We had originally planned to sell it ourselves before the accident happened.
    Thanks,
    Carrie

                 ======================

I hope everyone is ok ......

How bad is the damage.? .. airbags deployed, frame work, new doors.? .. $3,500 - $12,000 .?

Anytime in an accident - you need to be there for the "tear down" with the insurance company ... it could be a lot less -or- it could be a lot more than they think, and you don't want be sitting around the ol' Christmas table when they call and say "hey, we just ordered your parts and we should have it done by St Patty's Day" - when it should have been totaled and your being held at bay by the body shop ........ :(

..... 02 Honda 4dr Accord EX V6 with 41k ... if this golden god is deep in rubber, serviced, no paint by numbers like the Yota .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $13's, maybe "might" could get a dealer to drop the low low low $14's in it, maybe .............. ;)

    Terry & woodyww -

re: warranty refund - well, it is a Disco, so yep it has been used. Thanks goodness we had it though. A mere 3 weeks after we bought it was put in to action!

Advertising in the AJC and autotrader, both in print and online. Started out too high but have lowered a few times.

It's at $17K now and the lowest one in either pub. Sounds like we need to scrape up more cash and cut it some more.

    Have a great weekend.

Maintenance - oil changed every 3k, maintained by Volvo dealer
    Other: no damages

            =============================

In the land of the Patriots .... we have an 01 Volvo XC, miles are low for the year, color is good for the area and you say it has all the stuff (slider.? cold pack.?) ... if this is a clean one, no paint experiments, no Popeyes chicken in the seats, no curb burners, no Swirlomatic car washes, just a nice/clean "I need nothing" XC .. depending on the dealer, trade side, in and around the super ultra tall $17's, low/mid $18's, might "maybe" could find a dealer to drop the low $19's in it if it's "jam-up" and needs -0- .. if it needs stuff, start deducting .................... ;)

               The 03 Murano, is it a AWD, 2wd..? if it's the AWD, super nice and super clean with (gulp) 53 klicks, then the dealer might have paid in and around the $19ish figure, add a this and that, maybe $20ish, but who the heck is looking for 50k 2 year old vehicles.? .... the Volvo is worth almost as much, and would see a whole lot more down Retail Rd, XC's are in demand ............................... :^}

    Terry,
Just a question- was considering a 2001 540i this weekend, and dealer offered me 14K on my car (Chicago)-
2000 Lexus GS400 (V8) Platinum Package w/60K miles- Loaded, black/black, Nakamichi, immaculate, no dings, fully dealer serviced, all records, no paintwork or accidents, back seats like new (no one's ever sat back there), etc.
I looked online and no one's asking for < 22K on such a car (as a seller), and Edmunds/KBB says trade is >20K. After walking out, dealer now calling me back today to talk. What's my car worth on trade? THANKS!

          ===================================

$14 ...? as in $14,000 dollars..? might that be American money ..?!?!

Lets take a look while Auburn gets wound-up ..... In Chi-town we have a 00 Lexus GS400, it's the Platinum deal, we have low miles for the year, color is good for the area, we have the Nak .. if it's nice, Clean, knee deep in rubber, no whacked out car washes, service is from yesterday, no paint, no I drove over my neighbors tree stuff .... if so, the Lex is worth in and around the low/mid $18's, maybe "might" could, on a wonderful, lucky and a glorious day find a dealer that would drop the low low low $19's in it ...... $14,000 - ?!?!?! .... did this guy have lots of tattoo's and those funny little cigarettes on him..? .. even if your ride needed new rubber, service, a touch here and there, at least $17,5 ---- $14,000 ..?!? was this thing floating in the Everglades ................... :)

The 540's are nice vehicles, I just sold a loaded up 01 "baby doll" (auto) with 22k and all the junk (including the kitchen sink) for $35,9 ..... you should be trading for your vehicle and "aroundish" the $18ish figure ...... $14..?!? -- Yikes ..!

Thanks for the information. Went to a Lexus dealer today to look at a 2002 LS430 w/60K miles- great ride, a little fuddy-duddy to look at though. This dealer offered 16.5K on my GS400 as trade for the LS430 (which he wants 33K for, sounds reasonable); interesting that on his lot, he has a 1999 GS400 (white) with 40K miles asking 25.9K, a 2001 GS300 (white) w/40K miles asking 26.9K, both of which are way way way more than what he's offering on my 2000 GS400 (black) w/60K; from inspection, my car is in better shape as well (interior/exterior)- I'll let you know how it goes. I guess what I really want is a 2003 540i w/sport package but with the Lexus Mark Levinson sound system. Alas, such a car doesn't exist-
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... I think where you might be getting confused is on the *asking* prices .. they can ask anything they want, it's the getting part that changes the whole landscape ....

You need to be looking at one thing and one thing only -- the *Difference* figure, your car and "X" amount of bucks .... $14, now $16,5 ..? .. either your vehicle is in the "rough" catorgory and you won't admit it, or the guys your talkin' with are in the "rough" category and they won't admit it ............... ;)

Thanks for your remarks Terry. Sounds like we'd be a whole lot smarter waiting for our lease to run out on the Volvo(another 6 mo's) then give it back to the original dealer and figure things out from there. Our XC is clean - couple minor door dings and surface scratches that I could take care of with a $100 detail from a buddy. I could always try selling it on my own...could I get $23 - 24k do you think?

I went back to the dealer yesterday and they through out $17k as the trade value on the Volvo -sell price $22k on the 03 Murano SE/loaded/AWD w/"gulp" 53k - it is MINT though.

I told them forget it and they came back with this deal: Brand new 04 Murano SL AWD, loaded (leather/cold pkg/bose stereo/roof/etc...)... they'd pay off the remaining payments on the Volvo (I'd take the $$, get the inspection done and turn back into the original selling volvo dlr) - and I could lease the brand new 04 Murano for $430/mo for 42 mo's (+ tax - 15k miles/yr which works for us - 3 leases so far and 15k always seems to work) with $2k down (cap cost red). Worth looking at?, or should I just relax and hold off for a while? Thanks for your help....AGAIN!

Volvo lease is done in 6 mo's...Wife loves the Murano and we've had lots of "stupid" problems with the volvo. Had two volvos...always in the shop for these "stupid" problems...3 nissans prior...never a problem...I'd rather retail the volvo myself...time's the issue. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks for getting me thinking! Might be better off just waiting, but it's a buyers market right now.

..... You said the wrong numbers here -- "04" ... it's December, you have lost probably 3/4% residual and some support rate, plus you will be an 04 trying to purchase a 07/08, which kills the resale value .. you need to be in an 05, then trading for an 07/08 - got it..?

Ride the Volvo out and grab an 05 something in the spring .................. :^)

I'm soon to be purchasing a 2000 Lexus ES300 with 88,500 Miles on it. The miles is what's throwing my buying decision off but the car is indeed kept well and nicely maintained but who knows about used cars right?

That's why I'm asking you guys. I can't find this good of a deal anywhere. Most 2000's are going above this price up to the mid 16's.

It is black with ivory leather interior with factory lexus chrome rims. Don't know if it has the VSC option, they don't know, they don't even know if it comes wit HID lights. They also don't know the difference between the coach edition and normal es300. I tried knocking them down to 9500 or 10,000 but they're not having it. Not $1 lower can I negotiate with these pricks at lexus in MD.

Would anyone mind giving me their 2 cents? Thanks

Just the fact that it's a LR will continue to "kill the value"; but maybe it's depreciated so much now that it will level off a little bit (???). BTW, does this have a warrenty, &/or do you live near a good LR repair shop? And I just noticed this is a S1 Disco, ohhhhhh.........you might be able to buy the lady's '01 (I think) Disco II (check a few posts back) for not too much more........

Terry- My car is immaculate. The saleswoman and the used car manager both agreed, and had nothing negative to say. In addition, my GS400 just had the "full" Lexus 60K service- with no problems- brakes 90%, good tires, all filters changed, fluids, etc. No new recommendations. He also acknowledged there has been no paintwork, damage, etc to my car either!

The other thing I don't understand is that the used car manager at the Lexus dealer kept saying stuff like, "I'll have to make some calls on your car", and "if I give you 16.5K, I'll end up eating $500, so that's all I can give you, etc". Considering my GS doesn't need reconditioning, does that mean he can only get $16-17K for it retail even though he's asking $25K for the same car on his lot? And what does he mean by making calls? The GS400 is his bread and butter- shouldn't he know his own market? He's a Lexus dealer! Please enlighten me :)

kyfdx- you're right, the 540i sounds fantastic. But so does the Mark Levinson system. Just depends on your mood-

    Terry - if I may:

hfang, you have a 60K 2002 GS400. By calls, the dealers plans to wholesale it out. He doesn't want a 60K Lexus on his lot no matter how good it looks. He can't certify it. The other units in his stock have 20-40K less miles and are a year newer. Nothing against your car, he just doesn't want to resell it on his lot.
  • hfanghfang Member Posts: 31
Terry- live in Naperville (suburb of Chicago).

robr2- I don't think he's going to wholesale it. It's in great shape, always maintained by lexus (documented), and the car I'm considering on his lot is a 2002 LS430 with 61K as well. In addition- his GS's have between 30-60+K miles as well (mine's a 2000 GS400 w/60K), and he has several 97-98-99 ES/GS/LS as well- all with similar or higher miles, ON HIS LOT! So I don't see why he'd wholesale mine but keep the others. He has plenty of cars (as do other nearby Lexus dealers) that aren't certified. Is he playing the wholesale/auction card when he really intends on selling it himself- to maximize profit (no offense!)- because he has plenty of vehicles on the lot, older and higher miles, non certified, in significantly lesser condition than my GS-

BTW, he wants $33.3K for his 2002 LS430/61K miles with Custom Lux package- in good shape, one owner, no accidents/paint, fully serviced. Silver/black. Not certified. Hows about them apples?

......... This is my fault, I didn't check the geographic area ...

Here's the deal .. it's December and not too many Yankee dealers are going to be putting blood money into any vehicle .. you have to remember, they are thinking 60/90 days in advance, so in their mind: "whats this bad boy gonna be worth in the middle of February.?" ..... if he ran it through the Milwaukee/Chicago auctions right now, he would see the tall $17's, low low low $18's, and thats ~if~ it's puuuurfect, Glows in the Dark, seats are hovered in, waaay deep in rubber, etc etc - plus, he has less than 2 weeks to do it .. so I would assume he would drop the super ultra tall $16's, low $17's in it for safety ...

But, the bottom line is: he likes his inventory better than yours .. ego just confuses people, so you just need to go shop around and find a different dealer .. trying to figure out the "what", the were and the when of this, is a mute point .... move on ............. :)

I love all those crazy posts that people drop from all over the Edmunds site - "I bet I can steal the that old body style ES300 cuz' the new one comes out in 2 months" - "I bet I can grab the old body Honda Accord EX V6 for pennies cuz' the new body has been out for 3 months" - "I'm sure I can buy an old body Ody for $5,000 under invoice, because the new ones are out" - the funny part is, they believe it, until you read their same posts 4/5 months later and they haven't gotten anywhere in a big fat hurry .................. :^) ... there is a big money spread between the new ones and the pre-owned, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it .......

                But I digest - (I think it's gas) ...

This little dudette is a 99 S1, we have 60k, we have the no-sale blue thing going on, no slider, no toys, not much of a description here ....... $12,0 ..? .. thats a pretty fair price --- IF ~ you live in Mongolia ..... dealer might have paid the the the super tall $6's, maybe the low $7's, maybe added some rubber, maybe some service, maybe some cup holders, so lets figure it hits the table at the low low $8's ... a fair price for both would be the super high $9's, low $10's ........... $12,000 .? I have this watch, now, it looks "just like" a Rolex ....l.o.l......

    Terry,

I still haven't replaced my '03 TL-S. I'm trying to save some money by buying something cheaper. A friend of mine has been looking for something around $12k at Manheim, PA and Bordentown, NJ auctions. Unfortunately, it's been raining every auction, and like you mentioned in an earlier post, he doesn't like to buy anything in the rain.

This seems like the best time of the year to get a good deal at the auctions. After Fridays Manheim auction my friend suggested an '04 Mazda6i. The Mazdas seem to have come down to my price in the past several weeks. I'd prefer a V6, but I'm thinking I'd be happier in a 4 cyl Mazda6 then a Taurus SES 24V. Any suggestions on '04s for around $12k - $13k, maybe '03's. I like the idea of having the factory warranty.

    Hi Terry -

I'm interested in your thoughts on the following as a trade-in:

    Location: Germantown, MD
    Year/Make/Model: 2002 VW Passat W8
    Body Style: 4dr
    Engine: 4.0L 8 cylinder, 5 speed auto
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 43750
    Color: Silver/Black leather
Options: All standard options (let me know if you need these listed) + VW 6 disc CD changer and LoJack
    Condition:
       Interior - clean
Exterior - some dings (license plate circles) and several light scratches on rear bumper, a couple of light scratches on doors (I park in a parking garage everyday)
Tires - not sure how much they are worn, what's a good way to find out?
Brakes - I don't have the numbers from my last service, but FWIW I was told that the front brakes looked good and the rear brakes need to be looked at in about 5000 miles.
Maintenance - All scheduled maintenance performed by dealer, including the 40k service.

I was offered 17,500 by a dealer (which eventually went up to 18,000). CarMax offered 18,000 yesterday, with all of their indicators showing "consistent for its age".

    Thanks,
    Lawrence

    Hi Terry,

Back in the car market, and moving from lurker to poster. Dropped you an e-mail since the subject was off topic. Thanks for keeping up the good work here, and for always keeping it entertaining.

Hosts can you link post #20851 to the bottom? I'd hope it would help some folks with higher mileage vehicles.

    Terry-

Thanks for your input a few weeks back regarding my A8. In my search for a new vehicle, the dealer appraisals on my trade have been ALL over the map- 10.5k all the way up to 14,500. I KNOW the 14,500 is amiss, because the purchase price of the new car was not discounted similar to other dealers.

Anyway, I'm not asking for another opinion on my vehicle's worth- I think you pegged it pretty good the first time. My question is this-

What is the standard deduction per mile on a car using Galves? I've been told both $.15 and $.20. I'm 30k over the "limit", so it makes a nice bit of difference. It also seems that this is the book that they all pull out when I discuss my trade- I guess the numbrs are extra-tiny so we can't seem 'em from across the desk :)

    Thanks!

I haven't had a Galves in my hand in years, but, if I recall correctly, it depends on the car. Some are $100 per 1K miles over, some are $125. So that's either 10 or 12.5 cents per. Maybe there were even some $150 cars. Terry might know better, but, then again, he doesn't use Galves, so he may not. Anybody else?

In the past week, I've had four dealers pull out a Galves and a calculator.....all reached a different number, and all were before they were able to speak to the person who actually poked around the car.

Here in NJ, I've found many of the luxury brand dealers quoting me their prices. Maybe a combination of the fact they are lower than the other publications in terms of pricing and the fact that their numbers are not easily obtained by the public?

One dealer around here pulls out Galves to evaluate your trade and uses the KBB printout on all their used cars. Hmmmm??
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,350
who cares where they are pulling the number from? They have to live with what they put in the car, so that's the only number that matters. The only thing the book does (for the customer) is give them some sort of comfort level that the aren't getting "fleeced".

You are doing the right thing by checking as man sources as you can (NADA, KBB, Edmunds online, and of course our man Terry), and shopping to multiple dealers. If you are seeing a consistant price range, figure that is what your car is worth as a trade in (aka wholesale).

Take the best offer in the range, sell it yourself, or keep it, which ever one works for you.

Just remember, if you trade, "the only difference is the difference" (unless of course you are in some funny sales tax state, then how the allocate the numbers might make a difference to your total cost).

When the dealer is telling you exactly how they arrived at the number. If a guy tells me that he can give me 12k for my vehicle because he's going to get killed at auction for a dime more than that, fine. That's his number, and I can do my best to determine (through this site and anything else I can pull together- but mostly through Terry's #) whether he's giving me the straight dope. And even if his number is still lower than what I've been told here or otherwise, it STILL may be his comfort level. Again, fine.

However, if someone is going to specifically quote a publication and tells me that his # is garnered directly from that (with slight modifications, of course, due to the actual condition of the vehicle)- well, then I would like to know what the standard practice is.

If someone's giving me "Galves has you at 18k, with a 6k deduction for miles driven, and that's what I can pay you", I'd like to know if he's bumping his # on the mileage.

I'd prefer the honest approach that I do find with several dealers where the used car manager gives me his price, explains his reasoning in an honest fashion when it is expectedly below my dream offer, and we go from there.

I want the highest price for my car that I can get.. I don't care how they come up with it.. If they end up taking a loss on mine, because they looked in the wrong column in their book, then so much the better..

But, that said.. any dealer who is pulling out the book to give you a number is not being straight with you, anyway.. Any dealer that really plans on buying your car will check the current auction reports, or call another local dealer to get a wholesale offer for your car..

The book is just a sales tool... when being used to make a sale..
