Then there were 2 diff. people--both middle-aged well off appearing yuppie types-whose idea of "test driving" my Saab was to accelerate flat out, then slam on the brakes, in order to "test" the brakes. I was lucky they didn't warp the rotors--& I'd just had a $1K brake job.

Still, I sold it to one of them. They put me thru a lot of dues tho, & it took all day. They started demanding all kinds of $$ off at the last minute for picky little things, after making me drive all over creation to go to their "mechanic", etc. But I got $6200 cash for a 10 y.o. Saab, at least $1800 more than any dealer had offered (& some of them were pretty obnoxious too)...........

Hey, you actually MADE $500, & sold it to a guy down the street? Sounds pretty good to me.

... **I called them up and got the VIN number, and it is the car I sold them. So, I guess they took the $1600 rehab, had about 13K in the car, and are hoping to make 3K on in.
The stupid thing is that you can buy a new 2005 Camry LE for 17,900 at FITZMALL.com. And the '05 comes with power seats, which mine did not have** ..
    ==========================

Actually to a dealer, there's nothing stupid about it .. see, people don't buy homes, cars or boats - *they buy payments* .. so your Camry will hit someones target payment, and Phoof, off it will go .... do you think all those people driving $40k+ vehicles own them.? .. do you think BMW is doing so well because they are great vehicles - Nope.! somebody hit their target payment ~ and "Wango Tango" they're in a lease ..l.o.l... .... payments my friend, payments ....

Could you please tell me what you think I might get for this vehicle in a trade.
    97 Lexus ES300
    Mileage 104,000
    Color White
6 CD Changer is the only added option I think.
The tires have 30,000 miles on them.
Other than some rear bumper damage, the car is in immaculate shape. Someone backed into to me, and I need to replace the bumper. Will cost me 500.00 for my deductible. I was wondering if you think I could get more than an "extra" 500.00 on the trade after getting it fixed, or just trade it like it is? Thanks for any advise. I live in Texas.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
If you know who backed into you, and file a claim, your insurance company will try to recover the deductible from them, since you weren't at fault. They will send you a check if/when that happens.

i was waiting for that comment. ;)

after taxes, registration, full tune-up, new stereo, etc, we lost a couple hundred. But still not bad for driving it for about 6 months.

.... Thanks for the update ...

**I know, i know, you always say to use the paper, but its just so expensive for --one day-- of exposure**

.....l.o.l.... I Never said drop an Ad for one day, your killing me ..l.o.l... let me wipe the Coke off the keys, the longer the Ad time the cheaper the price - 1 day - Yikes .... minimum 10, and 14 days always plays better, just in case the first buyer drops dead ....

Anyway, I'm glad things worked out ............ ;)

All the GLS standard features (it's a pretty long list)
    Cruise control, etc.

Have had both 5k and 10k maintenances performed on time.

    Color:

What's my retail road number? (I won't ask if I'm insane -- I don't want the answer) KBB lists it private party for 23,960 or so... What's for real?

Leather, 4 disc in dash changer, traction control, ABS, power seat, 17" rims and new tires (Continental sports), 51,000 miles, extended warranty to 84,000 miles. Sportronic automatic. White exterior with the tan top and beige leather seats. Absolutely pristine, no body work, no winters, even the mats look new as they have always been covered with a plastic mat. Looks and drives new. Have all service records.

Would like to know the real world trade in value. Don't really have the time to privately sell but don't want to take a bath either. Was hoping to offset the lower trade value with the sales tax savings on a trade. Any advice would be welcome and appreciated.

    Thanks!

The Aleros were ... well ... uninspiring. All very obviously semi-ratty ex rentals. We (my brother was the one shopping) ended up pulling the trigger on a bit of an odd duck, found at an Acura dealer:
    '03 Mazda6 i
    2.3 L 4 cyl
    Titanium grey
    18,800 miles
    5-spd (?!?)
    16" alloys
    Power driver's seat
    ABS/TC
    A whole bunch of airbags

The rest is just base 6 stuff - single disk CD, cruise, A/C, cloth seats, no body effects. Got it for $13750 out the door, including around $1100 in taxes & licensing fees. Top line price was $12,314, dealer claimed they had 12,200 in it. It's in really nice shape. Told my bro I get the first shot at it if he decides to get rid of it.

    So how'd we do?
    Thanks,
    Jason
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
Mazda6i, 5 speed, ABS and side balloons, that's gotta be a rare duck. I think you (he) did great!

*** Told my bro I get the first shot at it if he decides to get rid of it. ***

I would claim second shot at it if it had a sunroof...

    Terry, you said:

"01 EX .. The miles ain't bad for the year, the color is not a helper, we have that movin' around thing between the seats, tinted lookers, all in all (based on what your telling me) it sounds like a pretty nice little Civic .... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $7's, might get reeeal lucky and see the low low low low low (did I say low?) low low $8's ...."
    -------------
Done deal, my son got $7,900 for the 01 Civic on trade for a new 05 Mazda3 hatchback 5spd, at $300 over invoice. (BTW, this is a nice little car!) When I posted asking for your advice, I didn't know the power locks on the Civic didn't work, and there was a 6 inch long crease in the front fender next to the right headlight. I think we "done good" !! And, yes, AZ is a tax on difference state.

I suppose there isn't much chance that the 3 will retain the value that the Civic did. Honda's do get crazy money....

Thanks again Terry, for your expert advice, and your wit.

    Terry,

You were a great help to me in August on a used Z3, this one's for my dad.

Selling 97 Accord EX Sedan V6
    South Florida (or Naples)
Original Owner 79k miles, no accidents or flooding, all service records up to date
    New Michelin tires all around
    Dark Green, Grey Leather
Power windows, seats, remote door locks, cassettee deck, ABS
Clean, non smoker interior, shiny paint with minor scuffs and dings, driver's side seat split (3")

CarMax offered $5,600, what do you think? Also, any appreciable value difference if traded or sold in Naples rather than Ft Lauderdale?

    Thanks for your help

Ok. I was going to let all of this die, but so many people responded with input that I feel compelled to make my final case. Everyone's experiences with various manufacturers is different, and it only takes one lemon to spoil a manufacturer forever for a person. For me, and the cars that I have owned (which I have always performed top-notch maintenence on, doing much of it myself) I have had a variety of ups and downs. I stand by Hyundai and Kia in so far as that I was able to get the "most" car and features for the money (which yes I know hurts the resale, blah, blah, blah) , and that the hyundais that myself and my family have owned were the 2nd most trouble free cars (the first being our Datsun (sp?)) I am not saying that my hyundai was perfect, I had to have wheel bearings replaced (under warranty (55,000, oh what do you know would have been out of warranty on other manufacturers ((Including my Nissan, which I had to have the same thing done on and paid through the nose on)), it was a little underpowered and was a gas hog compared to other vehicles.....but, it was the only V6 I could afford at the time (and let me tell you for all of you that don't live in or near Pittsburgh a 4 banger DOES NOT cut it here, period, no matter how well designed, a V6 barely does, even a good one) so when you rule out 4 cylinders that greatly limits what you can look at (i.e. RAV4, CRV, the affordable escapes ((which by the way if you like enough room to breathe in is too small))etc. I have a 79 Ford F-150 and it is a great truck. The new Fords are junk, period. They may or may not run well, but their interiors are plastic-y and cheap and boring (an etherial point I know) and the exterior is cheap looking as well (because I know that I LOVE gray plastic bumpers that make the car look like it left the paint shop too soon), not to mention black plastic mirrors, cheap looking unpainted plastic body trim, etc. And this is not just Ford, but Honda, Toyota, Gm and others who do this as well. Some of this is a matter of taste, I understand, but I don't want to pay 23K and have gray unpainted bumpers, I'm sorry it doesn't make sense. BTW, if you look up some recent information you will see that Nissan, Honda, and a few others are having sales shortages (gee, I wonder why?) I was looking at, and almost bought, an Altima a few months back. I really liked it, quality was great, looked good, lots of room, and great resale, you know why I didn't.....Because to get in it the same equipment I had in my Hyundai would have cost almost 30k! Even to get a standard 3.5se with no extra frills it was something like 25k or so. I don't care how great the resale is (and my point still remains that when it has 100k + on it the varience in resale begins to shrink) I am not going to put up that kind of money for a basic sedan. I know that currently the % of new vs used loans is very close (without incentives), and the problem I have with this is not that it means the used are more reasonable, it just means the new is too high. 5% for a new car......did I miss something, did Reagan jump out of his grave and get re-elected? I mean, we are close with the current puppet....moving on.....Used is not really an option for me currently (CPO or otherwise) I cannot start with 20k + when I put on 20 to 30k a year. Especially with a standard 3/36. CPO does help (and I stress HELP) to alleviate some of the worry of the used (we had a CPO Town Car that was full of problems), and I agree that letting someone else eat the depreciation is a good idea, but it isn't for me. I realize that I am in a somewhat unusual circumstance, but it is what it is and it doesn't allow for some things. Also, I will admit that a lot of it is personal preference....I don't care for the styles of most of the Autos out there right now (I think I feel asleep looking at Honda's web page), that doesn't mean they are bad cars, just that they are not for me. Out of all the things everyone said, the Subaru was about the only other possibility, but to get a Legacy with the 6 and leather, etc is still upper 20's minimum. So I want everyone who had a comment to think about this........What utility vehicles are out there right now that
    1. Have a V6
    2. Are under $25k with leather, sunroof, all the extras, etc
    3. Are big enough (not escape, tribute btw) for a 6'1" 250lbs linebacker shape guy and his family?
    4. (and this is less important) and do not have a cheap looking appearence with things like gray plastic bumpers and black plastic mirrors, etc?
You may be able to come up with one or two and I appreciate the sentiment, and I do realize that a lot of it comes to personal style (for example the Equinox isn't a bad choice but I don't care for the interior (and it won't have good resale at 120k either)) , but for the most part I am limited. Especially since I need the warranty (2 things about that, one my Hyundai had next to nothing wrong after the bumper to bumper expired, and to whomever the smart alec was, yes I understand what warranties cover, thank you very much) and for my money buying extended warranties has two problems.....1. I am buying the much more expensive (i.e. Nissan) car to start so I really don't want to add another 1k or so on to it, and 2. If they are so wonderful why should I even consider an extended warranty, especially when I "have one" already on my Hyundai or Kia?
I want to close with a statement that is mostly what I am trying to convey. Personally I have had a great variety of cars, and where one excelled, the others failes and vice versa. At the end of the day, they are all plus or minus the same (except Pontiac which is just plain bad all the way around (sorry you sunfire lovers you)). Some truly are a little better quality (Honda), and it you don't mind falling asleep at the wheel while driving it from a combination of boredom with the vehicle and the fact that you haven't slept in three days because you have been up working trying to pay for it, then be my guest and buy one and defend it to the bitter end. I am not saying that a Kia is better than a Honda, I am saying that it is better to many people especially those of us that aren't pulling in 75k + a year. It is like I said in my other post do I buy the baseline Murano for 27k and have a "better" built car that has better resale but that I hate, or do I buy the Sorento with everything for the same and enjoy it a lot more, but have to spend more on the next car because this has bad resale? Only you can make this decision respective to your desires, and your financial means. You wait and see in 5 to 10 years you will see Kia and Hyundai as top players (and yes they will cost more then too). I mean for anyone that has done their homework, Honda started out as "a cheap car that will rust out and you will have to replace the engine at 50,000 miles" and look where they are today. I had more, but I am out of space, thanks

.... ** Will a paint job hurt the resale of a car if it is still new? I have a 2004 G35 coupe.** ....

Did you ever know it to help..?

A repainted 96 Buick Century or a repainted 95 100k Camry is no biggie .. but a new (newer) vehicle like yours will be the Kiss of death .... that said, a touch here and there is fine, a fill and shoot is okay, but a full repaint is a kkkkkiller .. for starters, someone is going to think it was hit by a meteorite -- and there goes the resale value ... just take $5,0/$10,0 grand and knock it off the value ............ why are you painting it..? ... I'm trying to catch-up, read, smoke cigarettes, drink coffee and watch the news at the same time .....

Maybe a great detailer with a high speed buffer and some Mag 26 can make a difference ...?

Only came in a Wagon and Front wheel drive for the XRS.
    Mileage: 17400
Color: Indigo Ink (dark blue) outside Black leather/suede inside (Gulf States Toyota option)
Options - Power moonroof, Factory Navigation system, Tinted Windows, Side Airbags, Factory keyless entry. 4 wheel disc ABS is standard as are the 16 inch alloys. Tires are about 50%. All service has been done (3 month oil changes with Mobil 1, never hit miles) and I have the paperwork in the glovebox. Interior is hovered in. Exterior has one ding driver side front quarter panel (I miss having a Saturn). Front lip is a little scuffed, though it can only be seen if you're under the car. I had one door ding near the drivers door egde that required painting the entire side of the car. It was done at Service King (major repair chain in DFW) when the car was just one month old. I didn't pay for it, the idiot who dinged me did. Everything else is fine. It has been garaged whenever not in use (which is often given the low miles). I'd like the retail row and trade in. I know the 6 speed will hold it back, but it's the only way they come now.

On "Car Talk" a couple of weeks ago, the guys had a caller who wanted to buy a brand new $25,000 car, & have it repainted to a color she liked. "Click & Clack" sort of talked her out of it, but they went way too easy IMO, & neglected to mention that it would totally ruin the resale value (???).....

Well, great, enjoy your new Hyundai, it's your $$. It had occured to me tho that it takes a ton of rationalizations & many long paragraphs to "justify" owning a Hyundai. With a Honda or Toyota it takes maybe 2 sentences to describe why it makes sense to buy one. But It sounds like you're clued into understanding why buying a Hyundai is such a great deal.....& yes, "possibly",
*in 5 to 10 years you will see Kia and Hyundai as top players*. I guess anything's possible.

It's like, do you want to buy the nicest house in a crummy neighborhood, or a real basic house in a desirable neighborhood? But seriously, enjoy the Hyundai, I just don't think the people here are the only ones who don't understand it.

Forget about the "Hundy", Terry is going to insist that you go to paragraph school!

I'll let you know -- 17-18 sounds good -- may not be worth the effort of a private sale.

NY is a tax on difference state. I owe 0$ but don't want to take a bath (least not too much of a bath). Played with the idea of downsizing to an older A6 wagon w/quattro (1997 or so) and pocketing the difference. If I could find a good shape A6 with ~80k and trade for a difference of 12 to 14k I might be intersted (kids really want heated rear seats, it will be an occasional use car but I don't want to pay too much in repairs either). Looking to avoid a :lemon:

If - the service is 110%, no hurricanes, no floods, no my neighbors patio door flew into my hood .. trade side: $5,600 is all the money, it's the whole bag of cashews .. if you can get Car Stack to go there ~ then you need to be there ....................... :shades:

I posted the message below on the prices paid/ buying experiences Merceds e-class forum and was told that I should also post in this forum. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'm planning on buying this vehicle in the next 30-60 days.

Looking for purchase and lease pricing on a certified pre-owned 4 Dr. Sedan E-320 4MATIC AWD sedan in the NY/Tri-State area. Preferred color is brilliant silver. I've seen several on the MB website and it seems like the internet posted pricing is around $30-35,000 for vehicles with approximately 25-40,000 miles. I'm sure I can negotiate better pricing, but wanted to see if anyone had purchased a similar car recently. Thanks!

No, that wasn't all for the justification of buying a Hyundai. That was some explanation and point-counter point to what some people had mentioned/suggested. I can justify buying a Hyundai in one or two sentences, just the same as I can make an excellent case for not buying a Toyota or a Honda in one or two sentences. If anyone on here actually read anything that was posted, instead of just glancing at it and looking to make their point, you would see that it was about a great deal of topics. I do agree with your parallel(to some degree) about the home in a crummy neighborhood.....I think a more accurate depiction would be "Do you buy a nice new modular home with all the fixtures you want (but has a life expectancy of maybe 80 years and less market value than a standard home) for much less, or do you buy and older home that maybe needs some work but will be around much longer and have better market value." It is different strokes for different folks......

Anyway, my point is that Honda, Toyota, and Nissan are much to expensive for what they are, even as good as they are, and their recent sales numbers reflect this. The marxist revolution is coming, and the masses refuse to pay these outrageous prices for basic sedans and such, regardless of the "quality" or resale. I am not saying that Hyundai is going to rule the world, just that very soon there are going to be alot of people driving Accords and wondering why they paid thousands more for basically the same vehicle, same quality, etc.

**I am not saying that Hyundai is going to rule the world, just that very soon there are going to be alot of people driving Accords and wondering why they paid thousands more for basically the same vehicle, same quality, etc. **

As a person who has been openly critical of the Honda Accord (blown engine in my sister's vehicle at 50k) and would not buy a Honda, Toyota (or a Hyundai or a Kia, for that matter, I do not think that it is accurate to equate *ANY* Hyundai model (and I have driven them ALL back to the days of the Hyundai Pony in Canada before they introduced the Excel to the US market) with the Honda Accord in terms of the quality and design of the vehicle.

Now if you want to say that Hyundai represents a better VALUE than the Accord, you may be able to make that argument credibly. As a *used* car, it is a much better value as the first owner has borne the brunt of the depreciation.

first of all, that great old datsun IS a nissan.

secondly, i dont understand how you can say that NO 4-cyl. car can work in pittsburgh...the sonata's v6 has less power than the altima's 4. do some research before posting things like this in a room full of pros and experienced buyers.

    also...go to paragraph school too.

We have a Honda Civic '98 that we'd like to put up for sale on the paper. It's a silver 4dr with 73k miles, auto, cassete, electric windows & locks, ps, pb, airbags. Tires 80% left, brake pads 50% left. All maintenance records, one owner. It has a bumper repair on record (back one, dinged while parked) that was replaced new and is unnoticeable (but will probably come up on carfax, as it was an insurance claim). It has no problems we are aware of and still pulls strong and shifts smoothly. We are located in Los Angeles.

What is a good asking price? What is a reasonable selling price?

    Thanks

I went in there last friday afternoon, nice sunny day, I figured they would feel more giving on a nice friday afternoon.

First talked about the new Rubicon, got it for 1% below invoice plus incentives (college grad program). Then we talked trade. I said I wanted 9K and we would have a deal, they took me up on it. After all, I thought the number was fair, it was much higher than kbb, 500 higher than edmunds, and I wouldn't be upside down on the deal either. They didn't even drive it or start it up. With wrangler season on the horizon, they'll have it sold in no time. I probably could have got a little more, but they've got to eat too. Thanks Terry for you help.

... ** Boy, there really is a forum for every subject on the net! I would really appreciate some insight on trading my wrangler.
State College, PA (smack dab in the middle of PA, Pittsburgh: 150mi West, Philly 200mi East)
    2000 Jeep Wrangler Sport
    6cyl, 5spd, 4wd
    69,000mi
    Black
Alloys, int wipers, tilt, no ac, soft top, CD
Glossy paint, but a few scratches (can't see 'em from 20ft away)
    Interior is clean (no KFC)
    Tires: 60%
    Clean title/never wrecked
I bought it in 10/04 with 67k for 10,900 from a dealer way out in the sticks, at the time it was about 3K less than what the same thing was going for here in town. I am wanting to trade it on a new rubicon. I know what kbb and edmunds says, but what is your real world estimate**
    ==============================

**Boy, there really is a forum for every subject on the net!**

Yep, we do a little of everything around here .. if you stick around I will be giving out my recipe for the Poached Scallops with the Caviar Sauce .....

Anyhoo ... we have this 00 Jeep (my ex is from the ABE area) Wrangler Sport, 6 banger, handshaker, 70k, good color for the area, no breeze, 4wd, tunes, wheels and a soft top ....

If the rubber is deep, no rust, no I bounced it off the Penn State sign, no click click in the 4wd, no paint by numbers and the service is 100% ... then trade side, in and around the mid/high $8's, because of the area, you might maybe get a dealer to drop the low low low low $9's if he misses the no-air deal .....

    Updates are mandatory here ......

    26K on a trade?

To me this is a "no brainer": Assuming the 1996 Porsche Carrera Cabriolet w/26,500 miles is perfect, hopefully has records up the wazoo, etc., go for that one. Miles mean a LOT on a Porsche, & I'm guessing most used Porsche buyers want a stock one. I'm thinking, the red one with 40K miles & all the extra mods is not worth as much as the 26K one, by several thousand $$$ (?). BTW, is the 26K mile one at a Porsche dealer? Just my 2 cents.

    Hi Terry,
Recently bought a new car for my wife and am looking for private party numbers for her old car.

    Located by San Jose, CA
    1990 Honda Accord EX Sedan
    2.2Liter I-4 Automatic
    88,000 miles
    Black Ext/Tan Int.
Power windows/locks, sunroof, AM/FM/Cassette, alloy wheels. Everything works.
Michelin tires are about 1/2 worn
New brakes about 20K miles (a few years) ago.
New hoses under hood 20K/few years ago.

Exterior is a bit beat up. There is a credit-card sized dent on the front passenger fender and the paint there is cracked. Front bumper looks like it had a few Wal-Mart kisses. The paint is glossy everywhere but there has been a lot of touched up spots (maybe 20, size of dimes).

A number for private party would be great.
    Thank you very much!
    Paul
PS: We bought an 05 Accord EX Sedan in case you are curious :)

    Hiya Terry,
This is for a friend of mine, but I'll admit I dug up the car...

01 Cherokee Sport in no-sale blue
    107,800 miles; trade-in at used-car dealer.
    4dr, 6cyl auto, 4x4 (dunno quadratrac/selectrac).
Cloth, no roof, alloys, tires worn.
Power stuff, but no remote entry; has aftermarket remote start.
No runs not hits no errors, no smoke no smells.
    One owner, clean carfax.

This dealer is alright; he let me check out a Manheim report on higher-mileage Cherokees:

    03/22/05 SAN DIEG Regular $6,900 98,513 Below BLACK 6G A No
    03/29/05 SKYLINE Lease $4,250 99,936 Below GRAY 6G A No
    03/08/05 ARENA Regular $5,350 100,526 Below SILVER 6G A No
    03/11/05 MANHEIM Regular $6,600 101,090 Below GREY 6G A No
    03/24/05 GTR PHNX Lease $6,200 102,361 Below WHITE 6G A No
    03/29/05 OHIO Lease $5,850 103,240 Below WHT 6G A No
    03/17/05 MISS Lease $5,350 103,246 Below GRAY 6G A No
    03/31/05 BUTLER Regular $5,300 103,689 Below BLUE 6G A No
    03/31/05 DFW Lease $6,300 105,985 Below WHITE 6G A No
    03/09/05 NADE Regular $4,700 109,234 Below BURG 6G No
    03/03/05 FRDKBURG Regular $5,100 123,294 Below BLUE 6G No

The lady who owned it still owed $7,300 on it, so that's what was "allowed".
The 01 Civic she bought then got a little more expensive :-)

Question is, what's a good price for my friend to buy it at?

    Thanks in advance as always,
    -Mathias
