Thanks for your help! It is great that you are always here to help people out with their questions! :)

P.S. does anyone know if I need to report a $800 repair to the seller or dealership in NYC?

There probably isn't any law requiring you to disclose the damage but could you not in good conscience? If the shoe were on the other foot would you scream and yell if you found out later?

Besides a good used car manager will spot it.

    I live near Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I am considering either trading in or selling my firecracker red exterior, beige interior 2001 Honda Accord EX V6 4 door with about 86,000 miles. As you may already know, the EX is loaded with power sunroof, leather, 6 CD in-dash changer, alloys, etc... It is overall in good condition with a few small door dings and original paint. It has never been in an accident and has been well maintained (oil changes every 3,000 - 4,000 miles). The brakes and tires have been replaced within the past year and a half with Honda parts, and Michellin tires identical to the original ones. The car has never been smoked in.
Edmunds says trade in value should be about $10,500. If I were to bring it to an Acura dealer to trade on a new MDX, is that a realistic value?

I just put my post on roadfly.org, thanks for the idea. Still interested in Terry's estimate though.

I'll only spring for this if the planets align and everything is perfect.

Okay, so my wife does not like her 2004 Pacifica anymore and we want to trade it in. Here are the details:

    Location: Oklahoma City, OK
    Year/Make/Model: 2004 Chrysler Pacifica
    Body Style: wagon
    Engine: 3.5 liter with auto
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: ~27,000
    Color: Silver/ Light grey leather
    Major Options: Leather
    Condition:
1 small ding on the rear passenger door the size of a Sharpie pen point but otherwise it's awesome and clean. It's a typical careless door ding.
    Interior is in excellent shape.
    45% worn
All Maintenance done at Chrysler dealer

Other: Warranty repaint by Chrysler due to bad original paint quality. It was also rear-ended which meant a new bumper and tailgate sheet metal. The rear window was intact along with the tail lights so it wasn't a bad hit but it was a hit.

This was one of the first Pacificas that came with loads of stuff right out of the door. It does not have the sunroof or chrome wheels or DVD/Nav but it has everything else.

I was offered $21,000 in May of 2004 but I just couldn't stomach turning it in for a lesser car and being ~4K under.

I will be turning the vehicle in some time in the summer (I'm in Iraq right now) but I really don't want to lose too much on it. My wife dislikes the blind spots and they are so bad, in her view, that the car must go.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Capt. Phil

Greetings I am going to sell my wifes van and my truck and buy a truck to do the job of both of them. Van=Vacation and towing Popup camper. S-10 pickup=light duty round town stuff. I am most curious about the van at this point, because that's what is taking up the most space in the driveway. Any help on getting a real value of it (Trade in and selling it myself) would be great. kbb.com, edmunds.com, and nadaguides.com all give different results. I get anywhere from $9,094 to $11,675 trade in, and $11,575 to $14,100 to sell it myself. Then you go to Autotrader and the like and folks are asking 13K -16K for the same, or more often, less a vehicle. With HIGH mileage too!
    Like the name says...kinigitaquote? Please?
    Tom

    Location: [Roanoke, Virginia]
    Year/Make/Model:2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport
    Body Style: [Minivan]
    Engine: [3.3 liter, V6, auto]
    Driveline: [FWD]
    Mileage:38,000
    Color: [Blue]
    Major Options:
10 year/100,000 mi Drivetrain Warranty, 3.3L V6 OHV 12V FI Engine, AM/FM/Cassette/CD Audio System, Air Conditioning - Front and Rear, Automatic Load Leveling, Camper/Towing Package, Captain Chairs (Quad seating), Keyless Entry System, Overhead Console, Power Driver Seat, Power Sliding Door, Temperature Controls - Driver and Passenger, Tinted Glass, Trip Computer, Power everything, Dual front air bags, Tilt steering wheel, Cruise Control
    Condition:Clean
Details of interior: Clean, no stains on carpet, no upholstery tears, rips, etcera.
Details of exterior: Paint ding on hood. 2-3 mm diameter. Paint chipped where sliding doors close and meet the jam between the sliding doors and the front doors. small in size, maybe a centimeter long and just on the rolled edge of the sheet metal. Scratch on hood, maybe 2 feet long. Light, only seen when you walk up to it. was told it could be "buffed out". Whatever that means
    Tires - estimate 30-40%? worn
Brakes-New brakes and rotors. Replaced under warranty when I complained of a rubbing noise. Rubbing noise turned out to be something else entirely. Proof of the power of complaining LOUDLY in the dealers service area. :)
Maintenance-All maintenance performed at dealership at all scheduled maint. intervals, oil changes every 3000, Two recalls taken care of.
Other: prior damage: Wife backed into a neighbors car, hit their tire. Caused the flexible bumper covering to dent in. I popped it out easily, but it caused a palm size area of paint to come off. The van is that real dark blue and the underlying material is black. No one has ever noticed it. Real hard to see and it has never grown or rusted or worsened.
    No insurance claims, no repaints.

I'd just add, keep the records & receipts of the repair(s); have them ready to show to any potential buyer or dealer. If they start giving you a hard time about an $800 repair, it might be time to move on to the next buyer or dealer.....you have a great car there, it looks like!

........ No problemo .... just get the rear fascia fixed by one of the Prince's of Paint and make that mistake dissapear -- someone just mentioned it, but keep all of your records, ya never know ... and people have "vivid" imaginations, someone could *think* there was $5,000/$6,000 worth of damage done - now, they may not know why, but they can imagine it ..l.o.l...

I was driving a LS430 and somebody "tapped" my rear bumper in a parking lot and they put a "baby scratch" on it, it was nothin', you could hardly see it at a 3:00pm shadow, my body guy fixed it for $250 and it was puuurffect .. but in Florida we had to file a police report, which means it hit Carsmack and I had some nutcase offer me $5,000 less because "he" could see the paint work on the hood ... so, I sent him to my Opthamologist and sold the car to somebody else ........................... :shades:

happy hunting and let us know ....

... **Granted they are not fast, but that's not the point, they are sporty and fun** ...

You just answered your own question .. these are great little vehicles, I've seen Miata's with 220,000 miles and still blowing cold air and still running like a top ... think about it, they been building this little hummer for 18 years and it's "still" hard to find a market competitor ........

    Hi Terry,
I hope you are not too busy with your basket weaving lessons and could give me a quick private party value for my wife's old car.
Located by San Jose, CA (Fremont, CA, where the Tacoma and Corolla are built)
    1990 Honda Accord EX Sedan
    2.2Liter I-4 Automatic
    88,000 miles
    Black Ext/Tan Int.
Power windows/locks, sunroof, AM/FM/Cassette, alloy wheels (no curb rashes).
Michelin tires are about 1/2 worn
New brakes about 20K miles (a few years) ago.
New hoses under hood 20K/few years ago.
The interior is in pretty good condition. It's clean and everything works, no fry invasions.
The exterior is a different story... it's a bit beat up. There is a credit-card sized dent on the front passenger fender and the paint there is cracked. Front bumper looks like it had a few Wal-Mart kisses. The paint is glossy everywhere but there has been a lot of touched up spots (maybe 20, size of dimes).
A number for private party would be great.
    Thank you very much!
    Paul
PS: We bought a 05 Accord EX Sedan in case you are curious
    ===================================

    Tacoma land, huh.? .....

    Good description, thanks .....!

Yep, sounds like a great vehicle for Retail Rd ..... well, I would get with a great detail guy and try to get that "Drive by shooting" look down to a minimum because the color will show everything, the miles are low for the year, the service is kinda okay, we have newer stoppers and round things .. a dealer might drop $1,5/$1,800 because of the low miles, maybe ....

No leaks, cold breeze and everything works.? .. then in the land of Aaarnold, a super nice Ad, a glorious detail, all the service records glued to the dash, $4,900 *asking* and send that dudette south for $3,5/$4,500 .... in your area of the country they don't know what the words "low miles" mean, so it should sell fast if it cleans up nice and shows a good history .......

    Let me know .....

Everyone here at the forum is going into "Terry withdrawl" I think :) Hope everything is okay.....

I'm considering selling my 2000 Yukon and would like to know the real market value. It's been an awesome truck; I purchased it new, and it still looks and runs like new.

    Location: 25401 (martinsburg, wv)
    2000 GMC Yukon SLE
5.3L engine, 2WD, electronic traction control, CD, Cassette, Running boards, rear air and rear heat.
Bright red w/ silver bottom (beautiful color, and not many bright red Yukons or Tahoes around).
96K miles. Near perfect condition (well okay, maybe 98-99% condition
All maint records, all oil change records, Michelin Cross Terrains with 70% of tread left, good brakes.

I owe nothing on it; and I'm paying cash for my next vehicle - so I'm probably looking at either selling it to Carmax or Retail Road. What's the verdict; friends?

$6,000? Buy him a gift certificate at the local nursery so he can buy some potting soil and plants for it.

It is an almost 4 year old plain jane Escort.
$5,000 should be the STARTING ASKING price with out the door in the mid $4s.
Especially with old tires on it.

FYI when you say tires 50% worn. Do you mean 50% between new and bald? Or actually 50% worn? Legal limit is 5/32 and new is usually 11/32, so 50% worn is really a tread depth of 8/32.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
**$6,000? Buy him a gift certificate at the local nursery so he can buy some potting soil and plants for it. **

That was my response. You can get a lot more car for that kind of money. I was thinking $4500 MAX if I was in the market and ONLY because of the low mileage.

As for the tires, I assume that **any** car that I buy will need new shoes before the next winter ... Pep Boys 50k tires $160 a set would be the cost. I have been the "victim" of too many dealership polished tires ... My tires get changes every two years regardless of tread depth ... keeping them longer is peeny wise and pound foolish to me.

    2003 Toyota Matrix XRS - 6 Speed
Only came in a Wagon and Front wheel drive for the XRS.
    Mileage: 17800
Color: Indigo Ink (dark blue) outside Black leather/suede inside (Gulf States Toyota option)
Options - Power moonroof, Factory Navigation system, Tinted Windows, Side Airbags, Factory keyless entry. 4 wheel disc ABS is standard as are the 16 inch alloys. Tires are about 50%. All service has been done (3 month oil changes with Mobil 1, never hit miles) and I have the paperwork in the glovebox. Interior is hovered in. Exterior has one ding driver side front quarter panel (I miss having a Saturn). Front lip is a little scuffed, though it can only be seen if you're under the car. I had one door ding near the drivers door egde that required painting the entire side of the car. It was done at Service King (major repair chain in DFW) when the car was just one month old. I didn't pay for it, the idiot who dinged me did. Everything else is fine. It has been garaged whenever not in use (which is often given the low miles). I'd like the retail row and trade in. I know the 6 speed will hold it back, but it's the only way they come now. I've had it at three dealers. And of course 3 different prices. I have had between $11.5K- $14K. The car really is spotless save the door ding. You could eat off the engine. I am thinking $13K is reasonable....what say you? :shades:

    Hi Terry, et all
I'm looking for what you think the dealer has in this rig.

    Location, Seattle/Bellevue WA
2dr Vert Dark Green with Tan leather
SE model, with power heated lthr seats CD changer, et all
    2.0 Turbo
    45500 miles
nice condition, almost like new, although it was hit in the rear, and the bumper cover is slightly tweaked, and there is a visible crack in the taillight. I didn't notice a paint difference but could see the bumber trim alignment issue
The power top needs to be adjusted properly, (it's catching on the clamshell when opening and closing)
No real service history, Tires are Fine

They took this in on trade, so tell me what you think they got in it?

........ As always, Military first .......

**I'm looking at purchasing from a Military Volvo dealer. This is a 04 Demo S80 T6 Premier. Good Condition with minor cosmetic fixes.... The dealer is asking $40,000. This is the 'out the door' price. Tax, tag, title... everything. The car rides nice, plenty of pick up and go.... All the bells & whistle's, minus the fridge & rear door sun blinds. & AWD. Is this a good deal?? Seems a little high to me... but I'm not familiar with the car. How are the 04's? Are they prone to pricey repairs or average?
Any information, opinions would be so very appreciated!!! Thanks!
Location: Frankfurt, Germany; US Military Dealer.
    2004~S80 T6 Premier~Volvo:
    Body Style: 4dr sedan

    Condition: Good
Details of interior and exterior: Interior has a few dings in it, on the front of the glove box is a "buckle" in the leather, looks like someone shoved a object with corners into it. Same mark on the left back passenger door. Carpet looks good, a few minor scratches on 3 buttons inside the car, Leather looks good, Remotes for everything work. Exterior: Two small dings in driver & back passenger door; looks like another door was opened on it. 1 small ding on the front pass. door. Front pass door looks like it was opened up on something too; paint scraped off... Paint is still glossy & even. The dealer said that all that could be fixed & repaired would be done.
Tires - Still look new, original tires w/17000 miles
    Brakes- Good condition
Maintenance Dealer said that it is a demo model, only used for test drives & when dealers would take it home; No maintenance problems to report.**

I don't know much about the car market in the Vaterland .. I only sell Harley's there ... where the heck is Mathias when you need him.?

It's an 04 S80 T6 premier with all the stuff .. demo.? with 17,000 miles? .. he must have a girlfriend in the Ukraine .... ok color, leather, cold pack, Nav, DVD, slider, we have some interior battles, a few kisses at a few Treiben Sie in ...

Now, on this side of the Big Pond .. if it's super nice nice and super clean, no pictures of a funny guy with a mustache, minus the battles at the Treiben Sie in, then most dealers are paying the tall $27ish figure, and on a good day they might stagger towards the low low low low low $28ish range ... down Retail Rd.? .. $31/$32 would be all the Geld you would want to spend ....

    $40,000 ...? American money ...?!?

how do I say this in a nice way.?

Legal limit is 5/32 and new is usually 11/32,

In what state? I thought it was 2/32" in most states. If I see a used car with 8/32", I consider them to be recently replaced (10-20,000 miles ago)... Although I also replace them well before they hit the 2/32" wear bars.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
If you drive in Indiana in the Winter, 5/32 is the minimum safe tread allowed. Below that you lose a large amount of snow and wet traction.

Granted if you get caught, which usually only happens if you crash or slide off the road (or you live in the same county as Rosco P. Coaltrain), you have 90 days to correct the mechanical citation.

3/32 is the minimum for dry road driving.

Well, lets see here ... great, we're off to good start on this one - it's a Saab .. and not only is it a Saab, but it's a Saab convert SE (still my heart) and it's sitting in the suicide capital of the USA -- hey, your right down the street from Isell, maybe he can talk you into a Honda .l.o.l. ... miles are waaaay low, we got that no-sale green thing going on, but the tan guts help, we got the cold pack and we have some wear and tear for being 9 years old, but it "sounds" non-critical, a bump here, a dent there, a few little kisses - hey, it's a 98 ......

If the history is clean, cold breeze, no Maaco, no I hit the neighbors brick mailbox coming back from my buddys bachelor party, deep sneakers and the service is 110% ... then the dealer might have dropped the tall $7's, maybe he got crazy and dropped the low/mid $8's, add a this and a that and it probably hits the table in the Tall $8's .... I'm thinkin' $10,5/$10,9 would be all the candy in the candy store ........ whats he asking..?

Saw the post recommending getting some cheap pepboys style tires.

I test drove a car with those Pepboys tires 4 for $200, and it was a deathtrap. It was the worst handling vehicle I've ever driven with radial tires - even in a neighborhood going about 40 it was all over the place, no tread stability. Drove another with Michelins and it was incredbile, completely different. Only my '65 nova with 13" rims and bias ply tires was worse, and my diesel tempo was close to this.

Advice is real tires make a huge difference and are a safety feature.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
I have had a lot better experience with the PepBoys tires than I have had with Michelins, especially on vehicles where I do not put a lot of miles on the vehicle each year. I am seeing SIGNIFICANT dry rot in the rubber with Michelins after only three years.

I see no handling differences between the 60k Futuras and the 50k mile Goodyear tires that I was using before. And they handle better in snow.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
"PepBoys tires better than Michelins"--That's why I love this forum, you learn something new everyday. Maybe I'll think about PepBoys tires for my bmw 5-series--I bet they would even increase the resale value! (Sorry....)

Terry, just wanted to update you on this. As far as I can tell , Carsmack is just plain wrong on this. I did buy the car, and have the original title from the state that Carsmack says issued EML. No such thing on the title. First seller 'did' make an typo on mileage( stating 24xxx, rather than 64xxx, but second and third (mine)tranfers indicate the correct 69xxx mleage. Got the signed ODS from the dealer, and both places mileage is stored in the car( LKM module and one of the other boxes, ECU maybe) are in agreement. Went for 15.9. Thanks for your help.

I found a '93 Prelude in mint/brand new condition...it really has been well taken care of. It is a "S" model coupe w/5 speed, 4 cyl, air, sunroof, am/fm cassette, power windows, cruise, tilt, tinted windows. It only has 8,800 miles--yes that's right, eight thousand, eight hundred miles. Owner says its been garaged and covered for entire life of car and he only drove it on "special days." He is asking $12,500 but KBB has private party (PP) value at $5,405 and dealer retail at $7,115. Edmunds TMV has PP at $4,800 and dealer retail at $6,600. He displayed the original MSRP from 1993 and it show's $17,500 on the sticker, so he probably got it for less than that 12 years ago. I am new to Hondas but thinking about this car for my son who will be driving soon. Would I be stupid to pay more than $6,000. for the car? If not, how much more until I get stupid?

    Just one point ...

Generally, low mileage is a good thing. However, a 12 or 13 year old car with only 8k miles may not be a great bargain.

At a minimum, you'll probably replace a good deal of the rubber due to dry rot.

Do remember that a lot of parts deteriorate as much from time as they do from daily use.

    Proceed slowly.

Doesn't matter how few miles it has on it, it is 13 years old. Rubber starts breaking down by then; you'll be looking at replacing parts just out of old age.

Don't pay too much over NADA. You'll never, ever get the difference back. Imagine if it were totaled.

I'm interested to hear the experts' opinions on this one.

I'll just start it off by saying that this is probably one of those cars that you just need to throw the books away on. Extreme differences in accepted mileage like this make a HUGE difference that the standard books just can't compensate for.

I do think $12,5K is nuts. I mean, the car is still (i'll try to use Terry years here) 14 years old. (did i get that right?) And sitting under a cover is not the best thing in the world for a vehicle. You'll still need to do alot of repairing and replacing. heck, I'd be worried that all the engine gaskets are going to blow out the first time you take it on the highway. (EDIT: oops. bender & jlawrence beat me to the punch. :) )

My personal experience: I bought a '93 Sentra SE-R in 2003 with 37k miles. Not quite as "super low miles" as yours, but not bad at all. I had two fairly major "age related" problems. The power steering hose was seeping, and the left front caliper froze up and ate the brake disc, due to deterioration of the rubber seals allowing one of the caliper pins to rust. Both were fairly expensive to fix and probably would not have happened on, say, a 99 with 80k miles. I'd say worst case scenario on your car would be if the timing belt has weakened over time - probably a good idea to plan on a replacement no matter what. You don't want to have a 12 year old belt responsible for keeping your pistons and valves from making acquaintance, no matter what the mileage.

That said, if you really like the car and it really is that nice then go ahead and pay a premium. Maybe $8k? Just don't be surprised if it ends up needing a bit more work than you planned. I loved my SE-R, put 25k miles on it, and still sold it for more than I paid because it still had low miles.

I agree and disagree (go figure)...

The car is old.. no matter how low the miles.. You can't compare it to, say... a '99 with the same miles..

But, it is a relatively desirable car.. I'd compare it to a low-mileage Acura Legend.. (which is easy, because I have one)..

My guess is that someone will pay $7500-$8000 for the car.. If the car has been driven semi-regularly (meaning 10-15 miles every week or so), then the rubber should be in just as good a shape as any other '93 with original rubber (which may not be that good).

If this seller is asking $12,500, you probably aren't going to be able to buy it from him at a reasonable price.. It is obvious that he has no problem hanging on to a car that he doesn't really need.

    regards,

I'll agree that the seller won't let it go for what the books say. He's very proud of it and feels it's worth more than what the market says.

Also, I'd avoid a Prelude S for a new driver. It's a bit much for a 15-16 YO to handle IMHO.

Low mileage isn't always a good thing. In 2003 we bought a 99 Ram with 11,300 miles on it. In the past 18 months almost every seal has had to be replaced along with the oil pump, age definatly trumps miles when it comes to vehicles.

Ditto to what everyone else just said. A 12 y.o. garage queen can have a fair amount of problems waiting to happen. And I'm with you; personally, I wouldn't pay much more than $6k for it--this seller is dreaming IMO. Heck, for $12.5K there are some quite decent brand new cars out there: base model Corollas, Maza 3, Ford Focus, etc.

    Terry,

The sportwagon is still sitting on the lot, but they lowered the price to $29,990. There isn't any warranty left on it though. Is this looking like a steal yet? I have a feeling they are anxious to move it. Any thoughts?
