I'm thinking the no-leather is gonna make it kind of an "odd duck" for resale, & might affect the value more than the leather would have cost in the first place. How great of a deal is it, compared to other used Z4's?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,419
I'm not sure the leather will be as big a problem as no "premium package" .. A manual top is what really caught my eye.. IIRC, the private party was asking $27K... Which given Terry's appraisal, might be a screaming deal...

The conversation is over in Z4: Prices Paid.

Terry- I think the Honda may finally be on its way out...whaddya think of this?

Oh, great one, I bring another offering to you:

    '01 Volvo S40

    Gold over tan cloth

NO options- no slider, no leather...heck, no CD player. El-strippo as S40s came in '01.

    48k miles

No evidence of paintwork (my ownership of the 740 demonstrated to me that paintwork is easily spotted on a gold car) but I have a sneaking suspicion the rear bumper's been replaced. Love tap, maybe?

Non smoker, interior in very good condition, save for a small spot on the rear seat in an area that'd be covered by a car seat anyway.

Seems well kept, all told. It's on a local used lot that seems to have a few interesting cars on it...not a highline lot per se, but there are a couple late model 3 series, and Acura, Saab, etc. playing roommates with this little unit.

This seems a good little car for Mrs. Lance and her daily 80 mile round trip interstate commute.
They've got it marked down to $9950, BTW.

Oh, heck, here's the Autotrader listing.

    What sayeth the Oracle?

I am looking at a 2004 BMW Z4 2.5 Fully loaded (Sport, Premium, Heated Seats, Automatic, Xenon, No NAV) Merlot at a local dealer in So Cal. 9K miles. After about an hour of negotiating the dealer said the best offer he can make is $32.4. Is this a fair price or should I offer lower.

    Cincinnati, OH
    1998 Honda Accord LX
    4 dr sedan
    2.3L 4-cylinder engine
    FWD
    149,000 miles
    Black exterior, grey interior
    Automatic transmission, CD player
Condition: Right now the transmission has some problems shifting into first gear and probably should be rebuilt/replaced. Tires are brand new, as well as the front brakes. Rear brakes have 50% left. Most everything else about the car is in decent shape given the age and mileage. There are a few scratches in the paint on the trunk lid due to car washes.
Other: Unfortunately, the car was wrecked pretty bad in the front end in 1999 and needed a new hood, front bumper and radiator. The repairs still look fantastic, but they are not the original equipment. I am the original owner.

I figure I would probably want to get the transmission repaired before trying to trade-in the car to a dealer. If that repair is less than $1500, would that be to my advantage to get it done?

    Thanks!!!

I'm no Terry, but Edmunds says an 05 can be had for $38k. For $6k, I think I'd buy the "new car smell"...

If my brain isn't too addled, I think consensus is "lightly used" cars are great deals for dealers, not consumers.

Weren't the earlier S40's electrical nightmares? I like the look of the S40 but the automatic only and the fear of reliability (not to be confused with durability) kept me away from it.

The price seems pretty fair. A local no-haggle dealer here in the Atlanta area is selling a 2001 with 40k for $13,998 in a similar color with a similar lack of options.

From what I've read and researched, the MY01 refresh took care of a lot of the earlier models' electrical woes (it was sold in Europe for a few years before being brought here for MY00.) Plus, this one has no power seats, no sunroof, etc... ;)

The auto-only thing is a drawback, but frankly the type of driving Mrs. Lance does (drive 1/2 mile from house to interstate, drive 30+miles on interstate, 1 mile onto university campus) isn't the type that'd really draw out the advantages of a manual, anyway. Plus, it's a 5 speed auto, beleive it or not. We'd both prefer a stick, though.

Again, this is just gonna be a highway mileage queen, like the Accord is now. It's given us eight great years of service, but it's aging. Time for something new(er) I think.

    2005 Mustang coupe/premium - lthr,all pwr, prem sound
list/dealer $19,500 19,600 miles -- seems to be in line with what most are asking -what should I pay ???

Trade - in: 2001 Olds Auroroa 3.5 low is about 7k - high is 10k. Looking to put together a deal that is well balanced all the way around. Looking for advice on what I should pay for the Mustang and what I should expect from a used car dealer on the Aurora / min I should accept.

I have come up with offering 18,000 / mustang and taking 7,900 on Aurora - Is this reasonable?? Too low on the Mustang?

I went to check out the Saab over the weekend and it was already sold... to someone in Knoxville, TN. Asking price was $20,990. Dunno what the selling price was.

This dealer told me they're not buying too many 2001's since most are going out of warranty and that's a selling feature for them. They offered to buy me one at the next auction if I really wanted one.

I know what I want so I'll keep looking. Thank you for the info, Terry. :shades:

Finally the time has come to get rid of our beloved Camry.
    Specs:
'99 Camry LE - I am the original owner
    Style: 4 door sedan
    Location: Charlotte,NC
    Color: Black
    Interior: Beige cloth
    Engine 4 Cyl
    Options: Auto,cassette/CD and power seat

Condition-external: A few scratches & nicks all over
Rear quarter panel replaced at a body shop (an old lady jumped a light)
Condition-internal: No smoking or eating was ever done. In very good shape.

Others: All gadgets work including A/C. Engine is whisper quiet-as far as I can tell, does not burn any oil. Original engine & transmission.

Tires: Michelin Harmony bought 47K miles ago
Records: All records available-serviced at the local dealer
Timing belt: Last done @ 180K
Brakes 20% left I am told

    Mileage: 201,557

I was leaning towards a donation but you seem to discourage it. What is a fair price and what is the best way to get rid of it?

    Thanks for your advice.

Before you had a chance to reply I ended up trading it for $1,500. Your guess at $900-$1,200 suggests I did ok.

My experience on the trade may be of interest to you or others. If not, skip the rest of this message.

Once we had agreed on the new car price, Bill (names have been changed), my salesman, brought someone else to appraise my del Sol. The appraiser said he couldn't offer more than $800 and just about suggested I sell it myself. Then the two of them called over a third person, Larry, a young salesman who is a car enthusiast--besides selling cars, he runs a website advertising parts for exotic cars. He was very excited about the car. He said that the rust and upholstery problems wouldn't matter to some of his car enthusiast friends because they would do the repairs themselves. He gave me some hints for advertising to local car enthusiasts, did some quick web research and came back suggesting I should be able to get $2,000-$3,000 without cleaning it up. Larry's enthusiasm seemed to infect the appraiser because he took another look at the car, went back to his office, and came back to me with the $1,500 offer. (Who knows, maybe he had just found a buyer.) I then spent a few days trying to sell it on my own, but with no success. So when I picked up the new car four days later I traded my beloved del Sol for $1,500.

Get the car cleaned up real nice. Buy one of those BIG highly visible "FOR SALE" signs at the local discount store. Advertise it at $1000 or best offer and you should be able to get $700-800 for it.

That is a LOT of miles on any car. But remember, you are looking for someone who needs cheap transportation. And who has limited cash.

Wow!! I had to go back and read the post, after I saw you suggest $1K for a '99 Camry.. 200K miles!

While I agree that would be the value that I would put on it, I think you should set your sights a bit higher....

It may have 200K, but even at $2995, it will be the cheapest '99 Camry on the planet.. If it is in as good a shape as you say, and looks like a 100K car, I think you'll get $2500 out of it (not from me..lol).

I have to agree 100%. Sure, it has a bazillion miles, but it IS a Yota, and it's the ever-popular Camry...and it's a '99 to boot. This is an outstanding car for a high school or college kid - it's new enough to "look new", it's in good condition, it's quiet, doesn't burn oil, doesn't clang and bang when you're running down the highway. You should be able to sell it in about 10 minutes for $1,000, lol.

My recommendation is similar to kyfdx - clean it and shine it up until it glows, and then put $2,995 on it. I'd be really surprised if you didn't get at least $1,800 to $2,000 out of it. ;)

One last bumpity bump bump (asking for resale values of my truck). Thanks Terry!
    -------------------------------------------
Getting ready to sell my truck:

    Location: Detroit, MI
2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD LS 4WD Ext Cab SB
Color: Burgundy with dark grey interior
    21,000 miles
    Duramax Diesel
    Allison Transmission
    Towing package
Every "LT" option except leather, and OnStar (I ordered this truck with all options but didn't want leather, hence, no "LT")
    Aluminum wheels
    Skid plate
    dual-zone automatic climate control
    Stereo CD/Cassette
    Aftermarket bedliner
    Stainless steel wheel-to-wheel tube steps
Undercoated and re-sealed once per year
Condition: Immaculate! This has to be the finest 2003 truck out there. Looks like brand new inside and out. Tires at 85% tread. All maintenance performed religiously with all receipts. Truck was only driven for vacations (a shame, I know) never used for work, not a scratch on it inside or out. Still under the factory 3/36 warranty, and powertrain is covered until 5/100 by GM (standard for the diesel engine).

Given the outstanding condition, I'm thinking sell this down retail rd. Terry, what can I expect for it? Online pricing tools indicated around $30k, and I'm wondering if this is accurate.

    Hi Terry, newbie here.

Would appreciate your input on this. Getting ready to sell my wife's minivan so I can buy her something nicer!

    Location: Austin, TX
    1998 Toyota Sienna XLE
    Body Style: 4-door minivan
Engine: 3.0 liter, 6 cylinder, auto
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 77,000
Color: Burgundy with grey leather interior
Major Options: loaded: leather, upgraded audio (amp, speakers), running boards, roof rack, hitch
    Condition:
Very clean, garaged all its life. Minor scratches and dings on exterior, plus a couple of long (12") scratches on the rear bumper
    Tires - 25 % worn
Brakes - redone within last 2 years
Maintenance: oil changes every 5k + all scheduled maintenance at the dealer, complete records from day one
Other: No accidents, no repaints, single owner, clean Carfax report

Don't want to be greedy here, but want to set a realistic price. Would love your expert opinion.

I can post VIN if needed - couldn't tell for sure if that was advisable or recommended.

    $30,000 ...? is that American money ...?

The miles are super low, it's got the dsl, it's a LS with the LT upgrade package, it's a 4wd 3/4 ton Ecab, the color is good for the area, dual zipcode breeze and it's a short box with the tow pack .. sounds pretty nice .... you can "ask" $29,900 and see what happens, your advantage here is the area, it's a big boat and camper area and you have the 4wd and the Dsl .... if the phone isn't ringing after 6/7 days, then you need to be lookin' at dropping the price .... I have a feelin' the low/mid $28's might be the "taking" price .... let me know, it sounds like a nice truck.

    Good luck ...................

We will be trading in our Sequoia this week for a Lexus 400h. Could you give us a ballpark $ for trade-in value?

    Location: Chicago,IL
    2002 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4
Color: Thunder Gray with Beige Leather interior
    29,700 miles
    4.7L V-8 (run on Mobil 1)
All standard features (AC, PW, PS, PB, etc.)
    Moon Roof
    Multidisc CD player
    Rear Air
    Front & Rear airbags
    Aluminum wheels
    Running boards
    Towing package
    Skid plate
Interior Condition: Like new. It looks and smells like a new car. Protective plastic wrap from factory still on carpet under the rubber floormats. No scratches/rips.
Exterior Condition: Very good. Only blemishes are 2 "rub" marks on each corner of the rear bumper.
Tires: Original and need to be replaced.
The vehicle has been run on Mobil 1 from day one.

To increase its value, should I replace the tires before trading it in?

    Thanks for any advice/information.

    One for my dad...
    Louisville, Kentucky
    2003 Volkswagen Beetle GL TDI
    2 door
    1.9L Turbo diesel, manual FWD
    120,000 miles
    Carbon grey exterior, black interior
Only option was seat heaters on the cloth seats. It has the standard stuff, power windows, locks, mirrors, AM/FM tape player, no alloy wheels.
Interior is in great condition for the mileage. Exterior is in good condition. The front bumper will be repainted ($350) before we sell. Fairly new windshield. Tires are new Michelins, the brakes are factory but aren't used much because it's a highway cruiser. It was just serviced and they said the brakes didn't need replacement. It has had all the scheduled maintenance, synthetic diesel oil, timing belt at 100k and again at 120k due to a locked up tensioner. No other damage to the valves, etc., that we know about. Can you guess why he's thinking of getting rid of it?

    Thanks...

Hi Terry - my in-laws are looking to trade in their Lincoln for a new Altima or Maxima. What can they expect?

    1996 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC
    Detroit
    75000 Miles
Auto (can't imagine they made this with a manual)
    White
CD Player, Traction Control, but no moonroof
Very good condition for its age. No major parking lot dings or scratches. Interior is cluttered but will look nice once they clean out all the junk and remove the seat and steering wheel covers. Not sure how old the tires are - assume a couple years old. I think it needs new shocks - ride is pretty bumpy.

    Thanks!

This will be an easy one:

    Location: Maryland
    1995 Dodge Neon
    Body Style: 4dr Highline
    Engine: Manual
    Mileage: 137,000
    Color: Forest Green
Major Options: AC, ABS, Tilt Steering Wheel, Electronic Locks
    Condition:
    Interior is in good shape.
Exterior: Paint peeling from roof, sun rotted on plastic bumper. Burns oil - but no leaks. Struts need replacement.
    Tires - Fairly new.
    Other: 1 accident.

I know the car is basically worthless. My question: I'm buying a used car (2004 Mazda6 Hatchback) will be paying their internet price, which is congruent to Edmund's dealer value, and financing through them. What can I expect as a reasonable 'mercy' offer?

    Thank you for your time.

Mercy offer? They might even charge you extra to get rid of it. LOL
It will cost them time and manpower to handle dealing with the title and getting it to the junkyard for you. Otherwise, pick a number, $100, $250, $500?? If the dealer already knows they have the sale on the Mazda 6, unlikely they will step up much towards a mercy offer.

Were it mine, I would drive it to the nearest salvage yard that is known for paying the highest amount for junker cars and get an offer. Then slap a sign on the windshield, for sale, runs, $900 or best cash offer. Shouldn't last too long. At least if you cannot unload it you will know up front what the salvage yard offer is for the car.

The seller came back at $42,500 on the Porsche Boxster that I described below:

    Tampa, FL

The car had an MSRP of $71,000.

    2004 Porsche Boxster S
    3.2L, 6 Cylinder, Tiptronic (Auto)
    11,000 Miles
    Metallic Paint
    Full Leather
Self Dim Mirrors & Rain Sensors
    Power Seat Package

    Cruise control
    CD Changer
    Carbon Package
1 3/4 Years "in service" date

    Condition:
    Excellent/Good Condition

Isn't that the kiss of death?

Nah, ain't bought a new car/truck in almost 9 months. Zippy is over a year old, have had the Dodge for 21 months, and the Titan for almost 9 months. We are pretty content me thinks. :P

If ..... I read your email correctly ... the car is in Texas and you're in Florida (so you haven't seen, nor driven the vehicle - right.?) and transport is approx $1,400..? .. and he wants $42,500 for "his" inconvenience..?

Let me tell ya what I like about this deal ............... nothing.!

Like homes, boats or canary's - if you can't feel em' or touch em' - don't buy em ......

1.) for starters, transport from Dallas to Tampa should be half that ...

2.) if he wants $42,5 for the Boxster and he has "deep pockets" as you say, then he would have already traded, especially for a 3 hour drive - maybe he only got $38ish(?) you don't know, so $42 would be all the $$ because 11k isn't really low miles for a 04 ...

3.) if you're going to spend all that money (and you can't live without it) then you need to jump a flight and be there, how do know his neighbors kid didn't drop his i-pod on the hood and it's been repainted.? ..

4.) if this is really the type of vehicle you want, then maybe take your time and look around if you have the patience, the word being here is ~ "if" .. Boxsters will be "aplenty" come October/November when that first hint of snow or cold hits Atlanta or Philly, plus there will be a market shift and they will be less money ......

    Lots of "if's" here .................. ;)
