    Thinking of doing something dumb.

This would strictly be for retail, as I doubt any UCM would look very kindly at it.

    Located in northern NJ.

    2000 Toyota Celica GT
    2 door hatchback
    1.8 DOHC/5 speed
    90k miles
    White with grey cloth
Only options are floor mats and a rear wiper. Yup, roll-up windows and manual locks. At least A/C and a cassette/CD were standard.
Looks great from 20' away. Up close, more like the almost 6 figure driver it is. Say average in and out. Tires/brakes 50%, New crate tranny courtesy of Toyota, and clutch at 65k. Been run on synthetics since new.
    No hits, accidents or repaints.

    As always, thanks in advance.

Since my post on July 17, the transmission literally burned out on the freeway. Lost 4th gear, and when I slowed down to pull it off the freeway, when the tranny downshifted, made a "wake the dead" noise, followed by a lot of smoke coming out from under the hood. The transmission had what one can term a "catastrophic failure".

Remanufactured unit replacement estimate is $3,275 from one, $3,045 from another, plus tax. Diagnosis from dealership service is "water in the transmission", which I think is complete bunk. Waiting for an estimate on a rebuild job from another place. Every nondealership mechanic and non-Chrysler sales manager I have dealt with says those trannies go at 70-90k, and they are a terrible design.

On the trade-in offer from the local Lincoln-Mercury dealer, the sales manager offered me $3,000 as is, towed in, or $6,000 trade if the transmisison was fixed. The sales manager said they assume Intrepid's will have a/c and tranny issues - Chrysler has already replaced the tranny once, and the a/c evaporator once on the Intrepid at their cost, and 3 trannies in 67,000 miles compels me to leave the land of Chrysler for good.
They also offered me $1,500 trade for my 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis LS with 117,000 miles that has been so bulletproof, I'm going back to the Grand Marquis. That gives me $7,500 for trade.

Looking to trade it off on a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis LS Ultimate with 16,000 miles and still under factory warranty - the car literally looks brand new, and the Ultimate has the digital dash, air suspension, etc. The color is I think the "Arizona Beige" with beige leather interior. If I offered them $15,000 in this period of $2.30 a gallon gas, and a glutted domestic used car market, would they laugh in my face? They have no price on it, but their website has it at $16,995, but the dealer is not a "value priced" dealership.

    TIA

    Thus spaketh Terry:

...we got this 04 2.5 Z4 "Merlot" colored thingy bob... $32,400 ...? he ain't trying to get rich

This against a TMV of $39 less the 2,5 in the new trunk makes the price of driving a shiny new never-before-caressed Z4... $4,5?

"Brand-spanking-new without 9k miles just the way you want it" seems like it'd be worth $4,500....

  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,441
TMV includes dealer incentives... but, not consumer rebates....

So, supposedly, $39.5K would be the actual purchase price, including the trunk money... That makes the difference $7K...

Not that I pay any attention to TMV... It is a historical reference, and by definition is somewhat out of date...

    regards,

I think ... I lost track. I'm trying to work out some sort of algorithm that predicts when Terry will be online. That way, I can get my post up just before he gets here and hope to be the first one he sees. ;)

And here is just the simple summary for ease of navigation .... looking for trade and private sale on both:

    '98 S70 T5 automatic, 110K miles, funky coral red
    cowskins, slider, bun warmers, etc.
Let's call it fair condition (I like to think its clean for its age, but it does have its share of light scratches). OH, and let's not forget that $2K kiss to one fender a couple years back. But I'm pretty sure I'd try to sell this one myself.

"3 trannies in 67,000 miles"??? That's beyond ridiculous, even for a Chrysler. I would at least consult a lawyer, & be thinking in terms of trying to get this one replaced for free, by the dealership that did the other ones, & or Chrysler. (Chrysler, & the dealers, know it's a pile of junk, & have for years-- I think a small claims court might side with you). If all that fails, the last person I knew with a failed Chrysler transmission had it replaced for about $1100, by an indie shop.

Ditto. Everyone I know with a Chrysler tranny failure just out of warranty that went to small claims court won hands down.

There is no practical way water made it into the tranny. Did you drive it like a submarine once? Did you put water down the transmission fill tube?

I know they are just covering for Chrysler. To be fair, when I say three trannies - I mean:

    - One that came with the car
    - Replacement at 3,000 miles
    - Replacement at 67,000 miles.

Rebuild was quoted at $1,798. I called the dealer and made arrangements to get the car towed to the rebuilder. Dealer called back and quoted me a new price $860 lower - I'm assuming they are going with a rebuild now rather than a reman. Throw in the diagnostic, cost of prepping the car for flatbedding (cannot tow a FWD car without the tranny in it), and the tow, and the two prices were virtually identical.

Once I get it back, I'm going to pursue reimbursement, but it is kind of sad - the car drives great, and looks great.

I'm trading her off when I get her back, or I might just sell her and drive the 94 Grand Marquis full time. Kind of sad when a 12 year old car is more reliable than a six year old car.

BTW, any estimate on a fair offer on the before mentioned 03 Grand Marquis?:

    Location: Central Ohio
    03 Grand Marquis LS Ultimate
    16,000 miles
Arizona Beige with Beige leather interior
All power options, including autoclimate, cd player, power pedals, traction control, ABS, etc.
All Ultimate equipment - overhead console, digital dash, rear air suspension, wood and leather steering wheel with audio and climate controls.
No side airbags or moonroof, nor the full size spare.
Condition - looks brand new - has a few short, very light scratch on driver's side that they could touch up for next to nothing.

    TIA

    You and I both!
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Do either of the rebuilt trans. have any warranty? I dunno, you're investing $1800, to get maybe an extra $3k trade-in from a dealer? =$1200 extra you "might" get, assuming the trade in offers don't change, & nothing else goes wrong with the car. Trading it, I'd probably trade as is, & just get rid of it. It might be worth fixing tho to sell it privately (?), & Terry could give you the ##'s.
  • gregjohnsongregjohnson Member Posts: 117
TMV includes dealer incentives... but, not consumer rebates....

So you're saying the "invoice" price listed includes Mrg->Dlr incentives?

TMV... It is a historical reference,
No doubt, though it is possible to drive with the rearview, if you go slow enough ;);)

If indeed the incentive goes the other way, the $5k swing makes the deal much more logical...

    Thanks,

.. **Alright, Terry.... I'm just sampling here.... wife is pregnant. YIKES! So I might maybe have to do something sometime in the near future. Nothing set in stone yet, but just so i'm prepared for the out fall, can you give me a couple of numbers here?

    '98 S70 T5 automatic, 110K miles, funky coral red
    cowskins, slider, bun warmers, etc.

You've helped me buy both of these, and I'm hoping I don't have to sell, but sometimes you gotta make lemonade, right? Maybe it will be time to trade both of these in and pick up that used E320 I've mentioned so many times. My wife says she won't let me get rid of my precious Z because I'd resent her and the new bundle for it, but that's just silly, and, besides, when she sees what day-care costs, I think she'll be singing a different tune.
Oh, by the way, not that I expect a number on this, so I didn't list it, but I'd also be selling my Alfa. Good god. 3 cars for 1. It will indeed be a sad day ... but I'm happy and excited about the kid, so don't get me wrong. A little bad for a lot of good, ya know?
    =======================================

98 S70 T5 auto .. in the funky reddish pinkish coralish color (actually I like that color) we got some hydes, it's got some tall miles, we got the slider, cold pack and an itty bitty $2,000 repaired kiss that almost matches the rest of the car (at night, without the moon .l.o.l.) ... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $3's, maybe the low low $4's if you can find a dealer with real dark sunglasses on ..... Retail Rd.? blah blah blah and $6,900 *asking* and cut it loose for the first $5,5/$6,5 ........

Z car ....? .. the miles are low, the color is right and you say: "it's walkin' - talkin' - stalking death" ..... if so, then trade side you should be seeing the super tall $23's low low low $24's ............ lets hope you can keep the Z car ....

    Let me know ........ ;)

    Terry.

I sold my beloved 300ZX when my wife was pregnant. It is hard to explain that you are 100% on board and an equal partner in the deal when your daily driver precludes you from many parenting duties. And once the kid is two or so and wants to ride in your cool Z, how do you explain to them that they can't?

Don't you already have a toy sports car anyway? Sorry to be the voice of reason.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
lemmer - yeah, i have the Alfa. But, I wouldn't call it much of a sportscar. I just call it "the convertible." Its WAY too slow to be "sporty." I like it and enjoy having fun in it, but, given the choice, I'd MUCH rather have the Z than the Alfa. You do, however, make a very good point about the kid getting older and not being able to ride in it for a LONG time. Hmmmm... gonna have to ponder that. Really, though, that philosophy would apply to BOTH the Z and Alfa.

graphicguy - hahaha... you and lemmer are like the angel and devil on my shoulders at this moment. We'll see what happens. We're thinking we can wait until Spring to really decide. Nothing is for sure. If something pops up on the market that really turns my head, who knows? I mentioned on the CCBA board an S60 T5 I saw in Florida... REAL nice. Too bad I don't live anywhere near there. ... or is it too good i don't live there. LOL.

Terry - THANK YOU! appreciate the numbers. That looks real good on both counts. I was estimating $24K private party on the Z... so if that's the trade-in number, than $25K private party should make for a real quick sale ... and since I bought it for $26K, that's not bad rental cost for 6 months of ownership (of course, if you add in taxes ... its a bit worse, but still not bad). I did peg the Volvo for about $5K private ... so I wasn't far off on that.

q...it's easy for me to be the "devil". I've got my "young'un" just about raised (19 year old college student, but still living at home).

I can still recall the wife at the time (now, ex-wife) badgering me for a more sensible car when she was nesting. Ended up selling a '67 GTO and a '69 MGB GT, both of which I had personally restored, for a new Taurus (UGH!) to make her happy. The Taurus was her car. I ended up buying a Renault Alliance for my use....that was my 2nd mistake.

    14.000 miles
    Dark gray exterior/gray cloth interior
Options: Power seat, climate control, alloys, CD, factory DVD player, keyless. Usual EX stuff.
Condition: Pretty much like new. May have a couple of small scratches but I haven't seen them. No door dings, no stains, no french fry invasions (that can't be vacuumed out at least), and no accidents.
Mechancial condition: No problems. All maintenance is up to date and the tires are like new with only 14k on them.

Hi, i have a 1986 toyota pickup with a 22r carburated on it, 4x2, manual 5-speed. I want to sell it but i dont know the price...
It is in good mechanical condition (new starter, alternator, radiator, hoses, brakes, distributor, spark plug wires, muffler, and belts. I have many spare parts too... The truck have 240 000km (aproximately 170miles), but the engine have less (aprox. 200kkm) dont burn oil and no abnormal noises (before 4000-4500rpm), the frame is top shape, the transmission is ok, the bed and the floor too, the clutch is a little low but not too, it have a fiberglass box and a plastic box cover

but the body is not in very good condition... it have a lot of rust on the bed's body, all the cab is ok but it needs a new paint anyway, on the interior it have no carpet...

so... if u can estimate the price for me in american $

    Wow!

Well, I don't think Terry can be of much assistance on this (terry knows i mean no offense in the least). you have a nearly 20-year-old pickup truck with ... how many miles again? I think that's 170,000? Is this a canadian truck or US? You want US money but give us kilometers ... where does this thing live?

You might get a dealer who would take it on a trade ... then proceed to call the junkyard to come pick it up. Said dealer MIGHT give you a few hundred discount on what you are buying ... but, really, it is just a discount because he won't really be giving you any money for the trade-in.

Let's see ... engine isn't too much younger than the rest of the truck.

If it was 4x4, you might see a bit more ... but it ain't. If it drives well, you might see $500-$750 cash for it from someone who wants to make some Home Depot trips.

Ok, like that Toyota, I just don't think many of these would be crossing the dealer auction blocks these days. If Terry has a number, I'd like to hear it, but how many is he really seeing in the everyday used car world?

This is a collector's car. He's got that Carlisle show coming up in a couple of months. Tell him to get it ready and get over there. I'd be watching similar cars on Ebay and go from there, personally.

Cuz is a she :) not a big deal there.

I wasn't sure when the next Ford event was at Carlisle... as a Dodge owner, I usually know when "Chryslers at Carlisle" is, but stopped paying attention to the Ford events when I stopped owning Fords. If she doesn't unload it quickly, I'll recommend taking it there. I haven't seen the Stang myself, or I'd have a better idea... (bad Ford pun intended).

    2003 Murano SL
    40,000 Miles
    In New Haven Connecticut
    AWD
    Black Exterior
    Black Leather Interior
    Moon Roof
    Alloys
    Bose
Every option except Nav, Sat radio and DVD
    Good Condition, no major scratches
    Interior Good condition
Tires 40K Old I estimate half worn
New Alternator at 17K miles and a new one on order after the recall
    She owes $15,000 on it
Thanks in advance for the help
    djocks
    =============================

Good Mornin' Djocks ....... so the ol' lady is considering a BMW X5 .? .. she might be better off in that 40k Murano ........

Anyheeee ............. we got this 03 Murano SL .. we got 40k, it's got the 4x4 action, it's black with black guts so the color is good for the area, we got the hole in the roof, wheels, Bozo sound and the rubber is weak ......... if ~ she hasn't backed this dude over the neighborhood fire hydrant, no Swirlomatic car washes, the interior doesn't have that Bonnie and Clyde look and she hasn't had an affair with the Maaco repairman .... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $20ish figure, might maybe "could" see the low low low low low $21ish .. with you living in Connecticut the Galves book will hold this one back ..... $15,000 pay-off.? .. she's in great shape .....

Let me know what happens .....!

    Terry.

    Location: Marietta, GA/ 30062
    Year/Make/Model: 1999 Chev Suburban 1500 LT
    Body Style: 4Dr
    Engine: 5.7 liter Vortec 8cyl
    Driveline: RWD
    Mileage: 123,000
    Color: silver/silver
    Major Options: Alloy Wheels 16"/ Leather Everything; 3rd Row Seat; AM/FM/Cass/CD; Running Boards; Tow Pkg; PW/ PDL/ P Mirrors/ Rear Air; Keyless Entry; Roof Rack;
    Condition:
Exterior: Great Condition - Body ding less, Bumper also, except for slight vertical indentation in rear bumper from a light pole; no chrome scratched..
Interior: Great Condition - Some slight wear showing in driver's seat; no tears or scratches; leather's been conditioned several times over the years, etc., carpet in storage area has a slight stain that we'll probably get removed.
Tires - new ~5k miles ago
Brakes - great; serviced ~10k miles ago
Maintenance - continually at local Goodyear shop since purchased from orig owner (~45k miles in 2001), who maintained it at the dealer; every recommended pre mntnc has been done; few minor things such as Alternator, Battery, Oxy Sensor, etc., replaced rear axle on right side.
Other: No repaints or fixes; rear bumper very slight (almost imperceptible) indentation from light pole or tree. No broken or scratched chrome from this. Nothing else - great shape.
    ===================================

Great description - "tanks" ............. in Marietta, we got this 99 2wd half-ton "Burb" LT with the 5.7 V8 ... the miles are tall, the color is right, we got the 3rd seat, hydes, tow pack, boards, new rubber, stoppers and a baby kiss to the transom area ........... no paintwork, no KFC, no battles at Wal-Mart, no soccer Mom interior and Polar breeze ..? .. if it's as clean as you think it is, the service is 110% and it looks/drives and feels like 50k - then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $5's, maybe the low low $6's .. if it needs stuff start deducting ..........

Me personally.? down Retail Rd it would go ... finish any service, super detail, superb 4/5 liner ad in the big paper and $8,950 *asking" and wave bye bye at the first $7,9/$8,5 .......... clean "Burbs" even with big miles and bigger gas prices still get some big $$ ....

Good luck and don't forget the update..!

    Terry. ;)

You've been on Edmunds a whole month, made 5 total posts, and you are asking the professionals to abuse their carfax account and give you a free copy?

*sigh* I dunno, maybe I'm out of touch .....

    Location: Central NJ
Year 2001, Jeep Cherokee, SE, Red
Mileage: 29, 200 (yep, wasn't driven much by original owner, 18,000 miles on it when purchased 1 year ago).
    4.0, V6 Engine
4 Door Wagon, PW, PB, A/C, Power Door, Alarm, AM/FM/Cassette/CD
    Tinted Windows, Roof Rack, 4WD
Brand new tires on it, brand new spare - 3 months old, 2,000 miles on them.
Brakes just serviced 2 months ago.

Have all original owner's service records and all of mine. Have Carfax from when purchased (7/04) and it was clean. Purchased new windshied in 8/04 due to crack.

Accident: 2/05 - t-boned a Honda Civic. $3,000 of brand new replacement parts by authorized dealer (who fought the insurance company to get them due to vehicle condition). Back in mint condition, one ding in plastic bumper

    Interior - no rips, stains.

Given $8,500 wholesale quote by local Subaru dealer, who said I can probably do better at a bigger dealership. I looked up KBB price also.

Would appreciate any feedback. Nice Jeep, but not working as a daily driver for my new commute and I can't keep it until my 9 year old son is ready for it. ;)

Thanks for any and all replies!

Hey Terry... You helped me on a chevy suburban (97) about 6 months ago and were right in the ballpark of what I got for it. Well, I have another I am debating on selling. Here goes...

    Atlanta, Georgia
    2003 GMC Yukon SLT
    2 WD; 4 door, V8
    47,000 miles
    White exterior,
Gray leather interior. tow package, roof rack, cd bose system,
    Tires 30% left
All dealer maintenance, brakes are fine.
No dings, couple minor scratches, overall good shape in and out. Well taken care of car.

Too hot for golf in this part of the country today, so I am inside doing some research. THANKS

I would like to get an idea of the trade-in value for the following.

    Cedar Rapids, Iowa
    2003 Pontiac Vibe GT
    FWD
    37,000 Miles
Charcoal Gray Exterior w/ Black Interior
Power Sunroof/Moonroof (I do not know the difference but I bet you do)
Alloy wheels, 6 disc in dash CD, Front and side air bags, roof rack
Well cared for and clean, one paint chip on hood that you can actually see and the interior has general wear but in very good shape.
Tires I would guess are around 70%

    Thanks in advance!

I've been on Edmunds for six years, lived in Cedar Rapids for five; you're the only other Cedar Rapidian I've seen here!
