We have a car which I think has no value. It's a 1994 Saturn SL2, 160,000+ miles, faded, bits and pieces of trim falling off, smells like a chemical plant (where husband works) - the dogs won't even ride in it. The good news is that it still runs, when you add oil twice a month. And, it's never been in an accident.

So, when we go to buy a new car, is there any reason to expect them to take this car off our hands? I'm not looking for a trade-in credit, just don't want to be charged for their taking it. Or, is there a better way to dispose of this? We also have the option to just give it to someone in need through a friend, but I am not real comfortable passing along a car in shaky condition.

    Thanks

That sounds like a good idea, as long as you make real sure they understand the condition & what that could mean for them if things go wrong with the car. This may be the best car they could get--for free. Barring that, put an ad in the local "trader" type publication with a price of--I dunno--$1000? And maybe take $500.

.... ** bought this car about a month ago, thinking a super-large sedan would pacify my wife's demands for a mini-van. Didn't work, so I gotta sell the luxo-barge:

    Detroit Metropolitan area
    1996 Cadillac Sedan Deville
    4dr Sedan
    4.6L V-8 (Northstar Engine)
    FWD
    49,850 miles
    Blue with Blue leather interior
    Heated seats with power recline
Condition: When I bought the car, I bought from the original owner and there was some "deferred maintenance" on the vehicle. So I put on all new pads/rotors, new battery, flushed the rad fluid, changed ALL the fluids, and spent a long time cleaning, polishing, spit shine, etc. As a result, it's in great shape now. A couple door dings, perhaps making it look a *touch* higher mileage than it really is, but this is a 10 yr old car after all. No burger king battles, no accidents, tires are 75%+, and like I said maintenance is now 112%. It literally drives like a brand new car, just awesome.
placed the following ad in autotrader:
I'm asking $6650 but realize this is too high. I'm considering trading it in on a minivan but wanted to see what I might expect on this car. Also, what should I expect if my attempts down Retail Rd are successful? With miles this low I don't know how much to expect.
    Thanks!!!!** ...

In Motown ........ we have a 96 Daaa - Ville, good description - Tanks ....

The color is kinda ho-hum, the carpet has a rip below the emergency brake, leather still looks fine, miles are suuuuuper low, a few kisses here and there, you say the round things are good and someone spent a pile of money to bring it up to date .. all in all, it's not a bad driver if we have Arctic air ........ trade side, in and around the super tall $3's, maybe the low/mid $4's ........

Great vehicle down Retail Rd, especially in your area .... $6,650 ...? I think your a little on the short size .. but the price, the maintence and the looooow miles should bring em' in .... $5,9ish should get a pretty fast buyer after the smoke clears .....

    Let me know ........

It looks like my son and his wife may spring for the following car, and I'm looking for any advice???

04 Mazda6 S Wagon, 18K miles, V6, auto, white w/tan cloth interior, these come pretty loaded up with power options and such. This one has no other extras like luxury/sport packages or sunroof. Condition is good, it has a few stains in the seating areas and trunk, no rips, exterior has a few nicks on front bumper, otherwise good, tires OK, run strong, brakes feel good... here's the thing that throws me, carfax shows one owner as a rental. How does that affect the value and should my son not even consider it because of this? Dealer is asking $14.9 and it's located in MA... what is reasonable for this car?

    Any help???

    2001 VW Golf GL
    2 door
2.0L 4 Cyl Manual (doesn't have oil consumption problems)
    FWD
    47,000
    Dark Blue / Tan Interior
Options: Tint, CD Head Unit that matches VW dash lights or can put original tape deck back in, VW 15" Alloys Instead of Steelies or can put steelies back on
Exterior and Interior are Good. Few minor marks from life, but no trips to the body shop
    Tires are 50%
    Brakes are 50% or better
    Full Maintenance Records

This is the basic Golf, no cruise, no power windows etc. Not expecting much, just trying to figure out if it is woth more than the residual when the lease is up this winter ($6170) or better yet if I can get out now. Lease was based on 75k total which I'm well under. Not sure I could find anything better for the money and since it's pre 02 I have the ten year / 100k powertrain. Answering my own question, but curios what it's really worth.

    Thanks!!

.. **1998 Camry looking to go retail road I think. Purchased used 3years ago from dealer lot.
    Omaha, NE (Husker land)
    1998 Toyota Camry LE
    4dr
    3.0 liter, V6 4-speed auto, FWD
    110,000 miles
Antique sage pearl/sage (looks tan/tan to me )
all standard equipment, premium ETR/cassette w/6 speakers, center arm rest, Front side impact airbags.
Exterior okay, some rock chips on the hood, the normal wear and tear dings from parking lots, nothing huge. No accidents, no late night trips to Maaco.
Interior good. No fry bags. No smoking, no stains. Replaced floor mats as prior ones nicely stained and dirty from 5+ years of Midwest dirt.
Tires new, brakes new. Original maintenance done at dealer, subsequent done by my trusty local mechanic.

What am I looking at? Thanks in advance big T!

    Goooo Huskies ........................................!

Sounds like it "might" be a nice one, even with the miles ...

It's an auto LE, it's got the V6 (kinda rare) good color, we got 110 klicks, side balloons (real rare) the rubber and stoppers are fresh, no KFC, we have a few little Wal-Mart kisses here and there - great car for Retail Rd ......... if the service is 110%, a little visit to the Dukes of Detail, a super one of a kind big Fat daddy Ad and: $6,495 *asking* ... cry and whimper at $5,5/$5,9 -- but take it ..... trade side, mid/high $3's, maybe even the low low low low $4's with the proper alignment of Mars and Jupiter ....... I'm not much of a betting man, but done properly, I see a target price of $5,900ish .........

    Hey thats my car !

I bought the twin to this about 6 months ago. Mine was an ex-rental also, grey with 13,300 miles. I paid $15000.

This is the point where Terry says $14,900 is way too much to pay for this car. It's more like $13k and I feel like kaka.

    Hope this helps.

MA ....? might that be Middle Arizona ....?

Okaaaaay ......... this one is an 04 Mazda 6 wagon "S" with 18k .. it's the V6, auto, good color, a couple of coffee battles, it's got a few baby kisses, and based on what your saying it's in ok shape ........

I wouldn't worry about the "rental" part, the dealer probably bought it at the Enterprise lane at the auction, but a close inspection by a pro is always advised ......... $14,900.? dealer probably paid the tall $12's, maybe the low low $13's for it, so maybe $14/$14,5 might get it .........

Oooh, might this be it .....?

By jingles, I think you may have hit it!!! How do you do that? witchcraft?... voodoo?... tea leaves?... rubbing the head of a Ping Doc17?...

Unfortunately, those darn impetuous young'uns couldn't live another day without that car. So, here's how it went down last night...

Not knowing the real deal, I had advised'em to walk at $13.5... they could always go back... alas, they weakened and sprang for $14. This after the dealer tried to play hard ball and hold out for the whole enchilada at $15. Looks like they could have done a bit better. Hopefully "young grasshopper" will live and learn.

Once again, thanks for the enlightenment and may you card a birdie on your next 5-hole :)

oh, don't sweat it one bit. I think they did just fine. $11,200 was the auction price, but the dealer still had to pay fees, transport it, detail it, maybe fix a thing or 2... probably hit the lot at more like $12K. $2K over dealer cost is just fine ... sure, $13,500 would have been much more accurate and fair, but what's $500 over the life of a car loan? Nothing to cry over, that's for sure.

In principal, I agree. But like most things in life, the devils in the details and in this case any extra $$ comes out of their pocket now and not over the life of the loan. Maybe not worth crying over, but definitely deserving of a sniffle or two.

This is for jlawrence01. I have a 1996 Ford Taurus GL. It has approx. 96,500 miles on it. There are no major dents or scratches on it. The inside is fine, except that the inside of the doors are starting to detach. I inherited this car and I hate it. As far as I'm concerned, Ford stands for Fix Or Repair Daily. :lemon: I'm buying a 2005 Honda CR-V EX. How much do you think I could get for trading in my Ford?
    Thanks for the info!

    Hi Terry,

I really appreciate all the effort you put into this forum! I'm hoping you can give me your opinion of what this wagon should go for: I'm looking at buying an 03 Saturn LW200 station wagon with automatic transmission and 4-cylinder engine. The car is located in Houston, Texas, and has 12,600something miles on it. It's FWD, red, with grey interior. It does have a power driver's seat and I think it has ABS (I'm having a hard time getting an answer on this from the dealership.) It looks to be in good condition with no major dings, scratches, etc. I've only seen pictures of it since I'm in Austin--I wanted your opinion of what this is worth before I bother driving 3 hours to go look at it.

The dealership is asking $12,995 which I think is too high. Also not sure Saturn sold a whole lot of these 4 cylinder wagons, but my boyfriend has one and I really like it. What's your opinion?

    Thanks very much!

You can probably get 1000 for it if it runs decent and you sell private.
Trade in will give you nothing, and may actually work against you if you try to dump it to an import dealer.
Maybe a good idea to keep it if you have a place to park it, and drive it when you can to keep the miles off your new ride.

No dealer is going to want a 10 year old car with 96k miles. You'll be lucky if you get $500 in trade ...

As for me, I already have a 110k 1996 Olds Ciera that has been completely reliable ... so reliable that my wife is asking me if I have ever taken the car into the shop ... so I am not in the market for another car for 4-5 years so I think that I will pass.

Personally, I would run the old car out until you have a major engine/transmission failure ... however, you seem to want to spend a lot of money ... talked to the CEO of the Chicago Fed yesterday and he said that despite the consumer debt levels being so high, people continue to spend ... and the economy shoudl chuga along at a 3.5% growth rate for the next 24 months ...

As for "Fix or Repair Daily", the only engine that we had blow up in my house was the one on my sisters 1996 HONDA Accord at 50k ... and the dealer said "Pound sand ..." but that's another story...

Personally, I'd park the Taurus at a good spot near some traffic with a big sign asking for $1495 and take the first $1200 you get. Pricing it over $2k will price it out of teh market of your potential buyer.

By the way, that car is MY FAVORITE KIND OF CAR .... a FREE one.

Thanks for the info. FYI - I wasn't asking if you wanted to buy it, just if you knew the worth. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that. I have the money saved for my new car already, and I plan on keeping it for at least 15 years - unless it dies first. I don't buy things I can't afford. I'm sorry to hear about your sisters car, but I know a ton of people with Honda's, and no one ever seems to have had a major problem. I'm living on SS disability, so my last 2 cars were inherited (the first was due to a death in the family, and the Ford was given to me 3 months ago instead of being traded in). The one before the ford was a Chrysler Le Baron. I was at least the 3rd owner. It lasted 112,000 miles, then the real problems started. I did love that car - it had amazing pickup! Anyway, when it finally died, I inherited the ford. Problem is, I've had to spend more money on the ford in the last three months than I did on my Le Baron in the last 3 YEARS I had it! Anyway, your idea is a good one - I'll park it with a For Sale sign in it. Again, thanks for the info.

    A few other things ...

    1) The Chrysler K-cars post 1983 and derivatives like the LeBaron were some of my favorite cars evr to drive. Great pep ... but too much pep as I had too many close encounters of legal kind.

    2) Had to tease you about buying the vehicle. A 1997 Taurus is in my future should my old car break down before the end of 2007 when a newER car is in my budget.

    3) If you like the CRV, I would also drive the RAV-4 and the Toyota Matrix / Pontiac Vibe. Since you are planning to drive a car forever (and that's **MY** philosophy), check out a few cars before you make up your mind.

Finally, do remember that longevity comes to those who maintain their cars. I have some friends who drive "unreliable" cars forever with few problems and friends who could take a Honda Accord down in 60k miles.

I have a 2001Lexus LS430, 55K miles, A title, no leans, silver, with navigation, Levinson sound, sunroof, sport package.
    From internet:
Kelly Blue Book: rates as "good", trade-in value: $27,415
NADA: rates as "average", trade-in value: $31,625
Edmunds: rates as "clean", trade-in: $29,228

My Lexus dealer: $20,000 from something called "GALVS".
This is a great car I want to trade in on new one, but I feel the trade-in values is a ripoff.

    What's the deal??
    Thanks for any advice.

I get my oil checked religiously, and always top it off. I have my mechanics regularly check my car - I always bake them christmas cookies and they take care of my entire family! They're great guys. They always explain/show me everything they are doing and why. I guess I'm really lucky with that. I told them what I was looking for, and they told me I should check out the honda crv and the toyota rav4. So, I spoke to a bunch of people who had both. The problem with the rav4 is that if I need the extra room in the back, I have to actually take the back seats out, and that really does not work for me. I'm going to test drive on saturday. My best friend has a 2001 cr-v and loves it! She drives around 15-20,000 miles a year. I do approx. 10,000. I love the look of the matrix, but I live in the northeast, and we have some serious extremes in weather so I'm more comfortable with a mini-suv. I practically live in my car, so I need tons of room. I don't have a family of my own, but I have 5 nieces and nephews that I tend to tote around at times, and the Honda's have really good records for kid-friendly cars. I'm big on adjustable seat belts, as I'm only 5'3" and sick of seat belts that cut across my neck. What do you think about those after-warranties? I need to get one of those 7year/100,000 mile ones. I was checking out the one that Honda offers, and a company called Warranty Direct. Have you ever heard of them? Do you have any advice for me regarding this? It's worth it for me to get this kind of coverage since I'm keeping the car for as long as possible. Thank you so much for letting me pick your brain. This is the first time I've ever bought a new car, and I have a zillion questions.

Have you thought of a Forester? Not saying it's better than a CRV, just something to consider. With an extended warranty, definitely go for one offered by the mfg., as opposed to a 3rd party company--you know Honda, or Toyota are gonna be there 5 or 10 years from now. Also, there is a large dealer profit in some of these warranties--you should price shop as carefully for the warranty as you do the car. Don't let the "Finance guy" stick you for $1200 for the warranty at the end while he's trying to sell you bogus undercoating, or a $500 wax job.

    good luck!

If you do all of that stuff, you shouldn't have any problems.

Personally, I am still waiting to buy my 1st new car ... well, actually in a good year, I might buy 10 or 12 for the fleet ... but haven't nought one for me ... too many great deals.

As for the extended warranties, I don't buy them but ... you need to do what you feel comfortable with. For me, a large repair bill - and fortunately, they have been very rare over the past 10 years, is more of an inconvenience than a hardship so I "self insure". I buy used cars at a steep discount - like the Taurus and the Impala - keep the rest of the money I would have spent in reserve in case I have real problems - which I haven't. If you are going to keep a car for a long time, either way works better. My gut tells me that if you are buying an Extended Warranty, buy one from the Manufacturer - you KNOW Honda will still be around in 15 years.

Sounds like you have done your homework and know what you want. I am tired of reading posts of people selling a car they "had to have" six months ago as they were not satisfied with it.

As for uncomfortable ... I will be driving a Toyota Corolla all week end. Great car ... if it did not take me 10 minutes to get into it. It is NOT designed for big people.

Take your time. The Taurus will probably last at least a month ir two and don't let anyone push you around.

.. ** have a 2001Lexus LS430, 55K miles, A title, no leans, silver, with navigation, Levinson sound, sunroof, sport package.
    From internet:
Kelly Blue Book: rates as "good", trade-in value: $27,415
NADA: rates as "average", trade-in value: $31,625
Edmunds: rates as "clean", trade-in: $29,228
My Lexus dealer: $20,000 from something called "GALVS".
This is a great car I want to trade in on new one, but I feel the trade-in values is a ripoff.
    What's the deal??
    Thanks for any advice.
    ==============================

    Whats the deal Lucille .....??

You haven't given me much of a description and my crystal ball is at the dry cleaners, at least I know it's a NJ vehicle .....

The "Galves book" is used mostly in the -far- NE area, ya know like Mass, Maine, Naw Hampsha, Australia (ha.!) and places like that ... but I do know of a few dealers that keep them in their drawers just for the "grins" of it ..l.o.l....

    Anywaaaaay ... $20 grand ...? ..........

if - if - if - if ... "lets just say" ... if ~ this dude is just kinda okay in the rubber department, you haven't had this stud all touched-up at the Butcher Brothers Paint and Barbeque shop, no science experiments in the interior, the service is up to date and it's just kinda in ho-hum average shape and it needs around a ghee whiz or so to make it right .... then trade side, in and around the $25/$26 range with 55k ...

$20 ............? .. test target for Tiger Woods coming down the 16th hole at the NEC ..?

    $20 ....................? .. involved in a drive-by shooting ....?

    $20 .....................? .. tried to trade-it at a Kia dealer ...?

$20 ....................? .. your nephew used it in his paint by numbers kit.?

    $20 ......................? .. Mary-Kay car .......?

aaahh, there's no such thing as a $20,000 01 55k Lexus LS430 unless it's one of the above, cuz' these things are stronger then the 101st Airborne in a fire fight .... that said, I've heard of some very secluded tribes in Borneo that will only pay $21 ....................... :P

" What do you think about those after-warranties? "

As others have already stated, stay away from 3rd party warranties and only buy one backed by the manufacturer. I had Warranty Gold that went bankrupt on me. You might want to check out the "Extended Warranties" discussion.

Terry, I see exactly what you mean... makes me feel even better about the deal. Hopefully, we'll be getting that clean bill-o-health today as the Mazda gets it's own version of a car-lonoscopy :P

Sooooo... given the average state of the Mazda6 Wgn universe, looks like my son got a decent price at his end and the dealer is probably smiling cause he got to cash in a bit on his good fortune... win-win... how often does that happen!!!

Must be the stars an the moon aligning with Mars or something... hmmmm... might be time to pull Big Bertha from the bag and let'er rip... :)

The 6 wagon is a sharp looking vehicle. My wife and I are both in our 20s, and have no kids (other than dogs), but one of these is definitely on our list of potential new vehicles for when we buy our next car this spring. I am in NC, and these are selling for over $14 down here. I hope your kid enjoys the car.

    Hi Terry,

I really appreciate all the effort you put into this forum! I'm hoping you can give me your opinion of what this wagon should go for: I'm looking at buying an 03 Saturn LW200 station wagon with automatic transmission and 4-cylinder engine. The car is located in Houston, Texas, and has 12,663 miles on it. It's FWD, red, with grey interior. It does have a power driver's seat and it does have ABSt looks to be in good condition with no major dings, scratches, etc. I've only seen pictures of it since I'm in Austin--I wanted your opinion of what this is worth before I bother driving 3 hours to go look at it.

The dealership is asking $12,995. What's your opinion?

    Thanks very much!

    Hello Terry:
I would like to get your advice on a 2003 BMW 540i Pre owned certified
that I am planning to make an offer to Houston BMW North (see below
link). The car drives great and has the following features:
Silver/black, 39K miles, sport package, DVD NAV, new tires. No dings
and paint is great. Dealer list price is $42992 and I am planning to
negotitate. What is your advice on the lowest price that I can
possibly expect to pay for this car?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

one problem with Galves is that I've run into a few salesfolk who don't know how to read the darn thing properly (or choose not to read it properly, but who knows). They don't realize there is an extra line for the bigger engine or something silly like that. Or they can't quite figure out how to use the calculator when deducting for the extra miles. Its always something.

Have you hear of "Warranty Direct"? They seem to have a really good program. They are a member of the BBB, and BBBOnLine. They have a "satisfactory record". They've been in business for over 25 years. They also have other companies that deal with specific areas of the public. They are known as Interstate National Dealer Services and they sell their programs to banks, credit unions and car dealers under that name. They have had a total of 3 complaints in the last 36 months, and they sell over a million policies a year. I have been checking them out and they seem to be the real deal.

Thanks! I actually started looking in June, so its been a month or two already. It is now definitely time. I just worked out a deal with a dealer in Paramus, NJ who is going to sell me the car at invoice price, and throw in a few accessories for free. The only sticking point is that he is trying to find it in the color I want, and he'll get it for me without charging me anything. It seems like a pretty good deal, don't you think? I'm getting it at the invoice price that is quoted in Edmunds and carsdirect.com. Now I'm dealing with insurance companies. I know Gieco is good, and I got a quote from them. Know any other good insurance companies? Have you heard of "Warranty Direct"? They also do business under "Interstate National Dealer Services". They sell bumper to bumper warranties for up to 7 years/100,000 miles to banks, credit unions, and car dealers under that name, to the public under the warranty direct name. They are a member of the BBB and BBBOnline, and have a "satisfactory" rating. They have had 3 complaints in the last 36 months, and sell over a million policies a year. They pay the mechanics over the phone by corporate credit card so I don't have to lay out anything. For my car, if I get the policy when I get the car, it will only cost $1,642 including emissions. It basically covers everything except regular maintenance and cosmetic problems. Thats a one-time payment, coverage starts after my 3yr or 36,000 mile manufacturer warranty (whichever comes first) runs out. What do you think? Have you heard of them? check out their site: www.warrantydirect.com. You can find them at the BBB online too.

Thanks for the info! I have thought about the forester, and the rav4. The CRV is the car for me. I'm not sure which is better, the Honda extended warranty or "Warranty Direct". They seem to be a good company. They're listed with the BBB, BBBonline, and also do business under the name "Interstate National Dealer Services" which sells to banks, credit unions and car dealers. They've had 3 complaints in 36 months, and sell over a million policies a year. The difference with them is that I can go to my mechanic and they'll pay by corporate credit card over the phone so I don't have to lay anything out, as opposed to having to go to a Honda dealer. I have a very good relationship with my mechanic, and he's literally around the corner from my house. If I need to drop my car off, he'll drive me home. Check these guys out. I've worked out a good (I think) deal for the car. I'm getting it at the invoice price (as quoted by edmunds and carsdirect), plus I'm getting some accessories for free. And that price includes destination charge. The guy is really working with me. I think I'm doing ok.

I believe you can look under the Warranty board, and find out all kinds of things about Warranty Direct..

If you want an extended warranty, stick with HondaCare....

And, shop on-line.. dealers often mark up the warranty by 100%.

Well, several experienced people here have already given their opinions on your warranty issue. Whatever turns you on, I guess, altho to me it's a no-brainer to get the Honda ext. warranty. (And one of the main reasons to get a Honda or Toyota in the first place is that, you will probably never need an ext. warranty). And I'd bet some $$ that the dealer has a much bigger mark-up on the "Warranty Direct"........what are they charging you for this Wonderful Warranty? And don't you have some time after you buy the car to get it, if you still want it? And it probably doesn't kick in until the mfg. warranty runs out anyway, so if something breaks in the 1st 4 years, you'll have to take it to a Honda dealer anyway. And.......

*I'm not sure which is better, the Honda extended warranty or "Warranty Direct".*

...I think it has ABS (I'm having a hard time getting an answer on this from the dealership.

They may not know, or may give you an incorrect answer. If it's not standard equipment, look for an ABS pump under the hood, or find a desolate road to test it on, if it's important that you have it.

" I'm going with the Honda warranty. Thanks everyone for all your help! "

Good choice. I too did all the research on Warranty Gold and found nothing but stellar things about the company. They had an A++ rating all the way up until their problems become public knowledge. I even found out they were forbidden to sell policies in Florida and a few other states, yet they continued to advertise here. Thank you State of Florida for enforcing this.

I was offered $10K by Arlington Tx Ford dealer for 99 Ford F 150 SVT with 86,000 miles on it. they told me once it got to 90k they would drop trade-in offer to $9000. I owe $11,600 on it. no warranty avail now,I'm female w/o mechanical skills or skilled fam/friends.good condition in/out, minor cosmetic.Should I just cut my losses and get rid of the gas-guzzler ($58 last tank)? oil & tires expensive too, shocking?

What is the current average buying price for a 2003 WRX from a private seller?

    I have no idea.
However, at the auctions, cars with this 60-70 miles apparently are fetching between $11 and $12 and maybe a little over...but probably not inthe midwest...

Meaning $13 if it's all there is OK from a private seller; try for a little less, and don't pay over $14. Or bite the bullet and get a new one; a lot of these puppydogs have NOT had an easy life.

Good luck, and don't forget, snow is on the way here in MI!
