So, when we go to buy a new car, is there any reason to expect them to take this car off our hands? I'm not looking for a trade-in credit, just don't want to be charged for their taking it. Or, is there a better way to dispose of this? We also have the option to just give it to someone in need through a friend, but I am not real comfortable passing along a car in shaky condition.
Thanks

Condition: When I bought the car, I bought from the original owner and there was some "deferred maintenance" on the vehicle. So I put on all new pads/rotors, new battery, flushed the rad fluid, changed ALL the fluids, and spent a long time cleaning, polishing, spit shine, etc. As a result, it's in great shape now. A couple door dings, perhaps making it look a *touch* higher mileage than it really is, but this is a 10 yr old car after all. No burger king battles, no accidents, tires are 75%+, and like I said maintenance is now 112%. It literally drives like a brand new car, just awesome.

I'm asking $6650 but realize this is too high. I'm considering trading it in on a minivan but wanted to see what I might expect on this car. Also, what should I expect if my attempts down Retail Rd are successful? With miles this low I don't know how much to expect.

In Motown ........ we have a 96 Daaa - Ville, good description - Tanks ....
The color is kinda ho-hum, the carpet has a rip below the emergency brake, leather still looks fine, miles are suuuuuper low, a few kisses here and there, you say the round things are good and someone spent a pile of money to bring it up to date .. all in all, it's not a bad driver if we have Arctic air ........ trade side, in and around the super tall $3's, maybe the low/mid $4's ........
Great vehicle down Retail Rd, especially in your area .... $6,650 ...? I think your a little on the short size .. but the price, the maintence and the looooow miles should bring em' in .... $5,9ish should get a pretty fast buyer after the smoke clears .....
Let me know ........

04 Mazda6 S Wagon, 18K miles, V6, auto, white w/tan cloth interior, these come pretty loaded up with power options and such. This one has no other extras like luxury/sport packages or sunroof. Condition is good, it has a few stains in the seating areas and trunk, no rips, exterior has a few nicks on front bumper, otherwise good, tires OK, run strong, brakes feel good... here's the thing that throws me, carfax shows one owner as a rental. How does that affect the value and should my son not even consider it because of this? Dealer is asking $14.9 and it's located in MA... what is reasonable for this car?

This is the basic Golf, no cruise, no power windows etc. Not expecting much, just trying to figure out if it is woth more than the residual when the lease is up this winter ($6170) or better yet if I can get out now. Lease was based on 75k total which I'm well under. Not sure I could find anything better for the money and since it's pre 02 I have the ten year / 100k powertrain. Answering my own question, but curios what it's really worth.

Goooo Huskies ........................................!
Sounds like it "might" be a nice one, even with the miles ...
It's an auto LE, it's got the V6 (kinda rare) good color, we got 110 klicks, side balloons (real rare) the rubber and stoppers are fresh, no KFC, we have a few little Wal-Mart kisses here and there - great car for Retail Rd ......... if the service is 110%, a little visit to the Dukes of Detail, a super one of a kind big Fat daddy Ad and: $6,495 *asking* ... cry and whimper at $5,5/$5,9 -- but take it ..... trade side, mid/high $3's, maybe even the low low low low $4's with the proper alignment of Mars and Jupiter ....... I'm not much of a betting man, but done properly, I see a target price of $5,900ish .........
Terry.
I bought the twin to this about 6 months ago. Mine was an ex-rental also, grey with 13,300 miles. I paid $15000.
This is the point where Terry says $14,900 is way too much to pay for this car. It's more like $13k and I feel like kaka.
Hope this helps.
Could I outright sell to a third party for $30,000? :shades:

I wouldn't worry about the "rental" part, the dealer probably bought it at the Enterprise lane at the auction, but a close inspection by a pro is always advised ......... $14,900.? dealer probably paid the tall $12's, maybe the low low $13's for it, so maybe $14/$14,5 might get it .........

By jingles, I think you may have hit it!!! How do you do that? witchcraft?... voodoo?... tea leaves?... rubbing the head of a Ping Doc17?...
Unfortunately, those darn impetuous young'uns couldn't live another day without that car. So, here's how it went down last night...
Not knowing the real deal, I had advised'em to walk at $13.5... they could always go back... alas, they weakened and sprang for $14. This after the dealer tried to play hard ball and hold out for the whole enchilada at $15. Looks like they could have done a bit better. Hopefully "young grasshopper" will live and learn.
Once again, thanks for the enlightenment and may you card a birdie on your next 5-hole

I really appreciate all the effort you put into this forum! I'm hoping you can give me your opinion of what this wagon should go for: I'm looking at buying an 03 Saturn LW200 station wagon with automatic transmission and 4-cylinder engine. The car is located in Houston, Texas, and has 12,600something miles on it. It's FWD, red, with grey interior. It does have a power driver's seat and I think it has ABS (I'm having a hard time getting an answer on this from the dealership.) It looks to be in good condition with no major dings, scratches, etc. I've only seen pictures of it since I'm in Austin--I wanted your opinion of what this is worth before I bother driving 3 hours to go look at it.
The dealership is asking $12,995 which I think is too high. Also not sure Saturn sold a whole lot of these 4 cylinder wagons, but my boyfriend has one and I really like it. What's your opinion?
Thanks very much!

Trade in will give you nothing, and may actually work against you if you try to dump it to an import dealer.
Maybe a good idea to keep it if you have a place to park it, and drive it when you can to keep the miles off your new ride.
As for me, I already have a 110k 1996 Olds Ciera that has been completely reliable ... so reliable that my wife is asking me if I have ever taken the car into the shop ... so I am not in the market for another car for 4-5 years so I think that I will pass.
Personally, I would run the old car out until you have a major engine/transmission failure ... however, you seem to want to spend a lot of money ... talked to the CEO of the Chicago Fed yesterday and he said that despite the consumer debt levels being so high, people continue to spend ... and the economy shoudl chuga along at a 3.5% growth rate for the next 24 months ...
As for "Fix or Repair Daily", the only engine that we had blow up in my house was the one on my sisters 1996 HONDA Accord at 50k ... and the dealer said "Pound sand ..." but that's another story...
Personally, I'd park the Taurus at a good spot near some traffic with a big sign asking for $1495 and take the first $1200 you get. Pricing it over $2k will price it out of teh market of your potential buyer.
By the way, that car is MY FAVORITE KIND OF CAR .... a FREE one.
1) The Chrysler K-cars post 1983 and derivatives like the LeBaron were some of my favorite cars evr to drive. Great pep ... but too much pep as I had too many close encounters of legal kind.
2) Had to tease you about buying the vehicle. A 1997 Taurus is in my future should my old car break down before the end of 2007 when a newER car is in my budget.
3) If you like the CRV, I would also drive the RAV-4 and the Toyota Matrix / Pontiac Vibe. Since you are planning to drive a car forever (and that's **MY** philosophy), check out a few cars before you make up your mind.
Finally, do remember that longevity comes to those who maintain their cars. I have some friends who drive "unreliable" cars forever with few problems and friends who could take a Honda Accord down in 60k miles.

Galves book ..........? .. you live in the NE, right .....?

That said .. $11,2 is cheeeeap money at the auctions for an 04 Mazda 6 wagon .. most are doing "at least" $1,200 more ..... now, that doesn't make this one bad, maybe a lucky buy (I've had quite a few myself ..l.o.l.) ..... just make sure it gets checked out before any time gets rolling along .....

Personally, I am still waiting to buy my 1st new car ... well, actually in a good year, I might buy 10 or 12 for the fleet ... but haven't nought one for me ... too many great deals.
As for the extended warranties, I don't buy them but ... you need to do what you feel comfortable with. For me, a large repair bill - and fortunately, they have been very rare over the past 10 years, is more of an inconvenience than a hardship so I "self insure". I buy used cars at a steep discount - like the Taurus and the Impala - keep the rest of the money I would have spent in reserve in case I have real problems - which I haven't. If you are going to keep a car for a long time, either way works better. My gut tells me that if you are buying an Extended Warranty, buy one from the Manufacturer - you KNOW Honda will still be around in 15 years.
Sounds like you have done your homework and know what you want. I am tired of reading posts of people selling a car they "had to have" six months ago as they were not satisfied with it.
As for uncomfortable ... I will be driving a Toyota Corolla all week end. Great car ... if it did not take me 10 minutes to get into it. It is NOT designed for big people.
Take your time. The Taurus will probably last at least a month ir two and don't let anyone push you around.

You haven't given me much of a description and my crystal ball is at the dry cleaners, at least I know it's a NJ vehicle .....
The "Galves book" is used mostly in the -far- NE area, ya know like Mass, Maine, Naw Hampsha, Australia (ha.!) and places like that ... but I do know of a few dealers that keep them in their drawers just for the "grins" of it ..l.o.l....

"lets just say" ... if ~ this dude is just kinda okay in the rubber department, you haven't had this stud all touched-up at the Butcher Brothers Paint and Barbeque shop, no science experiments in the interior, the service is up to date and it's just kinda in ho-hum average shape and it needs around a ghee whiz or so to make it right .... then trade side, in and around the $25/$26 range with 55k ...
$20 ............? .. test target for Tiger Woods coming down the 16th hole at the NEC ..?

aaahh, there's no such thing as a $20,000 01 55k Lexus LS430 unless it's one of the above, cuz' these things are stronger then the 101st Airborne in a fire fight .... that said, I've heard of some very secluded tribes in Borneo that will only pay $21 ....................... :P
Terry.
As others have already stated, stay away from 3rd party warranties and only buy one backed by the manufacturer. I had Warranty Gold that went bankrupt on me. You might want to check out the "Extended Warranties" discussion.
Sooooo... given the average state of the Mazda6 Wgn universe, looks like my son got a decent price at his end and the dealer is probably smiling cause he got to cash in a bit on his good fortune... win-win... how often does that happen!!!
Must be the stars an the moon aligning with Mars or something... hmmmm... might be time to pull Big Bertha from the bag and let'er rip...

*I'm not sure which is better, the Honda extended warranty or "Warranty Direct".*
They may not know, or may give you an incorrect answer. If it's not standard equipment, look for an ABS pump under the hood, or find a desolate road to test it on, if it's important that you have it.
Good choice. I too did all the research on Warranty Gold and found nothing but stellar things about the company. They had an A++ rating all the way up until their problems become public knowledge. I even found out they were forbidden to sell policies in Florida and a few other states, yet they continued to advertise here. Thank you State of Florida for enforcing this.

I have no idea.
However, at the auctions, cars with this 60-70 miles apparently are fetching between $11 and $12 and maybe a little over...but probably not inthe midwest...
Meaning $13 if it's all there is OK from a private seller; try for a little less, and don't pay over $14. Or bite the bullet and get a new one; a lot of these puppydogs have NOT had an easy life.
Good luck, and don't forget, snow is on the way here in MI!
